Abstract [en]

Problem background: The Swedish construction industry has the highest accidents and fatality rates in the Nordic region, with 113 fatalities between 2013 and 2023, indicating a need for improved safety and crisis management. Construction sites are dynamic environments with constantly changing risks, making the workplace particularly vulnerable and requiring specific crisis strategies. Besides physical riks, crisis management also imposes demands on management control systems. A crisis can create long-term consequences for the organization such as decreased stakeholder trust and business instability,

Problem discussion: Sweden has laws and regulations for crisis management, but the construction industry faces unique challenges that make it difficult to apply standardized crisis management strategies. The variable work environment also means higher accident risks, which are exacerbated by ineffective communication on worksites.

Research questions: How can companies in the construction industry effectively prepare before, manage during, and recover after a crisis with particular focus on the role of management control systems in these phases.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze how companies operate during the three phases of a crisis:before, during and after. This includes how they can effectively prepare for a crisis, manage it and recover from it.

Method: The study uses a methodology with a case study research strategy. Five interviews were conducted, including a production manager, a site manager, a crisis coordinator, and two project leaders. Additionally, the study has a deductive research approach. Conclusions:The study shows that effective crisis management in the construction industry requires an integrated strategy encompassing all crisis phases. The role of management control systems is crucial, focusing on preparation and planning before the crisis, effective communication and role distribution during the crisis, and evaluation and reflection after the crisis. Adapting crisis management strategies to specific needs of the company is important.
