ESG in the Swedish Banking Sector: Challenges and Progress : Addressing ESG Challenges through Sustainable Practices (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines the integration of ESG factors in the operations of two Swedish banks, aiming to identify both challenges and progress. The goal is to enhance the understanding of how the banking sector navigates towards sustainable business practices and how ESG integration affects its overall sustainability performance. Through a qualitative research method and an in-depth analysis of the 2023 annual reports, data was collected on the banks’ sustainability efforts and the challenges they face.

The report highlights the importance of understanding how Swedish banks integrate sustainability efforts into their business models and their impact on strategic decisions and operational practices. The results show that the banks face some common challenges, but there are specific challenges unique to each bank, as revealed through the semi-structured interviews. It is important to note that the results presented are not representative of the entire banking sector. This is due to limitations in the study, particularly the fact that we were unable to conduct as many interviews as initially planned.

The study contributes to a greater insight into the sustainability challenges and opportunities within Swedbank and SEB. This, in turn, can guide future research and promote sustainable development within the banking sector.
