Are you a latte dad? : A qualitative study on changing ideals of fatherhood and their reproduction. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

For an extended period, society has been characterized by traditional gender roles, wherein the man was perceived as the primary breadwinner while the woman primarily assumed responsibilities within the household and for childcare. Over decades, perceptions of traditional gender roles have gradually been modified. Increased awareness and demand for gender equality have contributed to the progressive evolution and alteration of the father's role. To elucidate and comprehend this transformation, this study aims to examine its impact on family dynamics and paternal experiences. The study is guided by the research questions "How do external and internal expectations influence fathers in their role within family life?" and "What impact do the changing gender roles have on family dynamics?" Utilizing Judith Butler's theory of performativity, Charles Horton Cooley's theory of the looking-glass self, and Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus, the collected data has been analyzed. The qualitative interviews with eight fathers have contributed to an understanding of how these men perceive themselves as fathers, as well as their views on gender roles. The results suggest that childhood experiences are crucial in shaping how these men construct and enact their paternal role, as well as the changes in the various roles that are reproduced.
