Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Climate change affects the world in various ways and its consequences also play a significant role in the construction industry. In the year 2100, the climate in Sweden is predicted to produce higher temperatures and more precipitation. To ensure the resilience of buildings against these factors, the potential problems arising from them need to be identified.

The purpose of this report is therefore to investigate how existing foundations are affected by future climate scenarios with regard to the foundation type slab on ground. It is crucial to highlight the problems that different climate scenarios lead to when it comes to sustainability of existing buildings.

This report investigates the relative humidity levels in three different slab-on-ground foundation constructions, demonstrating the variation in moisture content under two established RCP scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The analysis is conducted via a case study involving foundation structures built using construction techniques from different time periods, aligning with the buildings present in Kungsbacka today.

Calculations have been conducted to investigate the relationship between increased temperature and relative humidity in all three constructions. The result shows that as the temperature rises, the relative humidity increases. During the summer period for the climate scenario RCP 8.5, all constructions have a humidity of over 90 % which defines the relationship between relative humidity and increased temperature. During the winter period for the same climate scenario, the values vary significantly for all three constructions. This is further discussed in the discussion part of the report.
