Abstract [en]

Today, a race exists among all available messenger applications: Who canmake the most secure app possible? Cloud services, increased encryption, andfurther security measures from device manufacturers are all techniques tomake data less likely to fall into the wrong hands. However, this is great newsfor people using these apps for criminal activity, making it harder for lawenforcement to access the data. This thesis aims to research if deleted messages from Telegram Messengercan be retrieved on an iOS device. Along the way, a closer look is taken at ITforensic tools and their ability to handle extractions and if iOS itself posesany significant challenges. The results show how all messages using the secret chat function in TelegramMessenger can be found and recreated. It is also clear that some IT forensictools experience flaws depending on certain prerequisites. There are alsoproblems that come with working on iOS devices that further complicatesdata extractions.
