”Things you didn’t think were possible somehow becomepossible” : A qualitative interview study on how women with a physical disability experiencepsychological well-being in para sports. (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine how swedish elite female athletes with a physical impairment experience psychological well-being in their parasport. A total of nine elite female para athletes participated in the study, of which all were between 19-63 years old (M=34, SD=12.3). All participants were elite athletes in different parasports during the data collection. A semi-structured interview guide was used which was based on Ryffs psychological well being theory. The result revealed that elite athletes in parasport experienced both positive and negative effects on their psychological well-being due to their participation in parasport. The effects that the elite para athletes experienced were (1) parasport contributes to a more rich and meaningful life (2) from a rabbit to a lion (3) the negative side of the medal. The elite para athletes experienced that their parasport contributed to a more rich and meaningful life with a variety of life lessons. They also described that they have experienced a big positive change in their confidence and self esteem since starting their participation in parasport. The elite para athletes also experienced negative effects on their psychological well being due to their participation in parasport such as performance anxiety, self-doubt, discrimination and economical stress. Enhanced comprehension can be advantageously utilized by associations and organizations regarding investments and decision-making related to the development of parasports, with the aim of increasing participation and promoting psychological well-being within the parasport community.
