Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Conflicts as well as conflict management is part of the everyday life at preschool. It has been shown, based on previous research, that adults often associate conflict with something negative, rather than something positive. Thus, adults may handle conflicts by avoiding them or giving the children a solution to the conflicts without letting the children try themselves. This could prove to be problematic because children may have a hard time solving conflicts on their own and could miss out on learning opportunities. We chose a qualitative approach and adapted a deductive approach to our work. The method was chosen to examine preschool teachers' different perspectives on conflict management, in regards to age and experience. This was carried out through interviews in which nine preschool teachers were presented with different cases and questions. The data collected were later analyzed using a thematic analysis method in which we could interpret codes in how preschool teachers approached conflict situations. Based on these codes we created themes: Preventative focus, Stop conflicts, Observe, Active participation in conflicts, Listen to all sides. The results indicate some differences in age and experience regarding preschool teachers' perception of conflict management. Though we can see some differences in preschool teachers' conflict management regarding age and experience there's more than one approach to conflict and preschool teachers tend to use various different strategies and combine them to create their own methods to manage conflicts.
