Bakgrund: Cancer kan drabba alla oavsett ålder, kön och socioekonomiskt status. Det finns olika behandlingsalternativ, men inte alla cancertyper är botbara. För vissa cancerpatienter är palliativ kemoterapi det enda alternativet för att hålla sjukdomen i schack och som kan hjälpa att bevara deras livskvalitet. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att belysa upplevelser hos patienter med cancer som genomgår palliativ kemoterapi. Metod: Litteraturstudie med induktiv ansats genomfördes. Sökningar via databaserna PubMed och CINAHL resulterade i tio originalstudier somanalyserades. Resultat: Litteratursökningen resulterade i fyra kategorier: autonomi, integritet och självbestämmande; sammanhang; hanterbarhet och kris. Kategorierna innefattar beskrivningar av olika upplevelser hos patienter som genomgår palliativ kemoterapin. Patienter upplevde bland annat beslutsångest, svårigheter att samla information om behandlingen, både positiva och negativa följder av behandlingen och dess påverkan på deras livskvalité, dödsångest samt behov av tro och motivation. Konklusion: Upplevelserna varierade mellan patienterna beroende på deras individuella förutsättningar, erfarenheter och behov. Alla dessa ska tas till hänsyn vid utformandet av omvårdnad vid palliativ kemoterapi.

Background: Cancer can affect everyone, regardless of age, sex, or socioeconomic situation. There are few treatment alternatives but not every cancer type is curable. For some cancer patients, the only alternative for keeping the disease at ease is palliative chemotherapy which can help with preserving life quality. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe experiences of palliative chemotherapy among patients with cancer. Method: Literature review with inductive approach was carried out. Database search in PubMed and CINAHL databases, resulted in ten original research included in analyze. Result: Result extracted from literature was grouped into four categories: autonomy, integrity, and decision-making; coherence; manageability and crisis. Categories include descriptions of experiences among patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy. Patients experienced: decision anxiety, difficulties in gathering information about the treatment, both positive and negative consequences of the treatment and its impact on their quality of life, death anxiety and the need for faith and motivation. Conclusion: The experiences vary between patients depending on their individual resources, experiences and needs. All of these must be taken into consideration when designing care of patients with palliative chemotherapy.
