How sustainable is a sustainability fund? : A study of five Swedish investment banks (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Sustainability is a topic that has gained a lot of attention during the past years. Nations and individuals have come together to deal with the issues our world faces. Countries and people have in many cases had the need to change their everyday life in favour of laws and norms that have been put in place to protect and avoid further harm to our planet. As mentioned, there are numerous stakeholders in our society affected by environmental-related, which also applies to banks. This study has been created to analyse five different banks' sustainability work regarding their fund management, which has been made by analysing a selection of funds from the banks included in this study. The funds selected have all been marketed by the banks in some channels as sustainable. The authors of this study created a model to review and analyse the fund's degree of taking sustainability into account. The model is based on the bank's sustainability reports, the fund's sustainability score obtained from Morningstar and the number of investments that are made in questionable industries. Using the model, the following issue of this study is answered, “What sustainability requirements does SEB, Nordea, Handelsbanken, Länsförsäkringar and Swedbank place on their sustainable investments and how are these complied with by the various banks?”
The conclusion shows that complying with the internal and external regulation connected with financial institutions and investments. It is on the other hand presented in the study that even if the banks are complying with the current regulations, there are still investments being made in questionable industries through sustainable funds. This is because of the lack of concrete regulations of when the financial institutes can classify the funds as sustainable. Instead, the regulations concerning sustainable investments are general and applied to all. The finding of the study shows that new regulations are close to implementation. The disclosure regulation and taxonomy regulation are created to increase transparency towards investors. With this in mind, the goal is to give the investors more insight into the funds' investment process in general and regarding sustainability. The taxonomy regulation will also initiate a classification system, where investors will be able to see the degree to which a fund takes sustainability into account. However, the study shows that the banks establish their own rules regarding their sustainable investments, but these also leave room for flexibility in the chosen investments that are made.
