The purpose of this study is to describe how construction companies can use digital models of construction works in community construction and what it provides for advantages and disadvantages as well as risks for companies. The study will also consider obstacles and opportunities that BIM entails, as well as BIM's opportunities for development.

In today's society, the demand for sustainable societies, attractive environments for people to live, work and work in increases. It is through the use of digital models, BIM, that work becomes better and more efficient throughout the work process. Using digital models is an innovation for some companies and a natural way of working for others.

To achieve the purpose of the study, seven construction companies were interviewed, large and medium-sized. To get a clear overview, companies that use BIM and companies that do not use BIM have been interviewed. This is to create a breadth in the selection and empiricism.

The results of the study show that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of using BIM. How companies that use BIM work with it during the construction phases are different and there is no right or wrong way on how the models should be used. The results show that BIM is the future of the construction industry, but that there are things to develop with the models to make the processes more efficient. There are obstacles to why not all construction companies choose to use BIM and the majority answered that it is expensive licenses and that education is required that entails costs.
