Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Urininkontinens är ett stort folkhälsoproblem som ökar med åldern och kan innebära förändringar som påverkar det dagliga livet, livskvalitet och värdighet. Sjuksköterskan har en viktig roll att stödja patienter med urininkontinens både fysiskt och psykiskt eftersom det påverkar det dagliga livet för många äldre personer. Syfte: Syftet var att belysa äldre personers upplevelser av att leva med urininkontinens. Metod: Studien genomfördes som en litteraturstudie med en induktiv ansats. Resultat: Studien baserades på 11 olika vetenskapliga artiklar som resulterade i fyra huvudsakliga kategorier: känslomässiga upplevelser av urininkontinens, erfarenheter av hälso- och sjukvård, upplevelser av urininkontinens ur ett socialt perspektiv och upplevelser av att hantera urininkontinens. Konklusion: Urininkontinens gav upphov till upplevelser av rädsla och skam men också tacksamhet, vilket således påverkade äldre personer att utföra dagliga aktiviteter och integrera med andra människor. Upplevelsen av att hantera urininkontinens med hjälp av olika anpassningar och strategier skapade förutsättningar i det dagliga livet. Sjuksköterskor som var stödjande och visade respekt upplevdes vara av stor betydelse för att bibehålla värdighet. Det behövs mer kunskap och utbildning för sjuksköterskor inom området urininkontinens. 

Abstract [en]

Background: Urinary incontinence is an extensive public health issue that increaseswith age and can involve changes that affect daily life, quality of life and dignity. Thenurse has an important role to support patients with urinary incontinence bothphysically and mentally, as it affects the daily lives of many older people. Purpose:The purpose of the study was to describe older people’s experiences of living withurinary incontinence. Method: The study was conducted as a literature study with aninductive approach. Result: The study was based on 11 different scientific articleswhich resulted in four different categories: emotional experiences of urinaryincontinence, experiences of healthcare, experience of urinary incontinence in asocial perspective and the experience of handling urinary incontinence. Conclusion:Urinary incontinence can lead to experiences connected to fear and shame, but alsogratitude, which affected older people to perform their daily activities and interactwith other people. The experiences of managing urinary incontinence with the help ofvarious adaptations and strategies created conditions in daily life. Nurses who weresupportive and respectful showed to be of great importance to maintain dignity. Thereis a need for increased knowledge and education of nurses regarding the area ofurinary incontinence.
