Experiences of lifestyle changes amomg people with schizophrenia : a systematic review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: People with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders have an increased risk of developing somatic diseases and have about 12–15 years shorter life expectancy than the general population. The somatic ill-health can be related to unhealthy lifestyle habits such as inadequate physical inactivity and unhealthy diets. More knowledge about the experiences of lifestyle changes among people with schizophrenia is important to provide adequate support for a healthy lifestyle for this group. Aim: To describe the experiences of lifestyle changes regarding increased physical activity and healthy eating habits among people with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Method: A systematic literature review based on 19 qualitative studies. Searches were performed in three electronic databases; PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data material. Results: Two categories emerged: (1) to have experiences of barriers and, (2) to have access to enabling support and positive experiences. Conclusions: This study provides knowledge of what influences the implementation and maintenance of lifestyle changes among people with schizophrenia and can be used by mental health nurses to improve the lifestyle interventions for this group. Support given from significant others were found to be important and indicate a need for further research.
