Abstract [en]
The aim of this essay is to find out how students acquire words. The study, which was conducted in two classes at an upper secondary school in Sweden, investigates how well students learn and retain words which they have only practiced on one occasion. It also wants to show whether there is a difference in acquisition if the learner has practiced the words in context or just in a word list. The hypothesis that words presented in context would be easier to remember than words presented in isolation could not be established in this study. The results point at the fact that learning words, retaining them and being able to use them is a long process. Remembering words, which the students had only practiced an one occasion, proved to be very hard. This shows that teachers must ensure that new words are repeated, if not, it is likely that many will be forgotten.
