From Repressed Silence to a Woman's Voice of her Own

Abstract [en]
This essay gives prominence to the emotional mode that manifests itself in Virginia Woolf's writing; that personal feelings are involved in the creation of her character, the fictitious Judith Shakespeare, who repressed and silenced because of obstacles made by patriarchal values never has the ability to devote herself to authorship. In "A Room of One's Own" Woolf emphasizes the state of mind that probably would have permeated every woman who might have had an ambition of establishing female authorship during the Elisabethan period. In "Professions for Women" she calls attention to the resistance of economic and social nature, as well as the prejudices that prevented a female author from expressing herself in a female way based on female experiences. This paper analyses Woolf's text from a biographical point of view, focuses on other researchers' findings concerning Virginia Woolf's life and work, and refers to biographical literature. The portrait of Judith Shakespeare becomes the emotional counterpart to Woolf's hardships as one of the pioneers of female authorship, who has to struggle against the resistance, based on male criteria in a society that opposes female diction. Her weapon in this struggle was her sense of humour, irony and her talent for expressing suppressed feelings in a poetical style.
