Abstract [sv]

A case is described with the diagnosis acute severe haemorrhagic pancreatitis, demanding intensive care, including assisted ventilation for repeated periods during an extended period of illness. The aim of the study was to analyse the abilities of the ICU to fulfill som defined criteria of quality in a uniqe case of severe illness, where reproducible conditions suited for controlled and statistical analysis are not at hand. The patient´s wife was closely participating in the care by her mere prescence, and made diary notes on her impressions and other details of the course of events. After recovery patient and wife were submitted to an interview, and the resulting report together with diary and medical records made the basis of an analysis, where some importanta quality criteria - knowlege, feeling of security, ampathy, continuity and accessibility, were highlighted. The common knowledge, accessibility and continuity factors made the patient and his wife feel secure in the environment that was totally new to them and in a critical situation of their life. It can be concluded that the method of describing and analyzing a single case can be adopted to other similar cases.
