Swedish Learners of English and their Ability to Pronounce both Contrastive and non-Contrastive Phonemes
Högskolan i Halmstad, Sektionen för humaniora (HUM).
2005 (engelsk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study is to investigate whether or not Swedish learners of English make more errors pronouncing words with contrastive phonemes than they do with non-contrastive ones. By changing a contrastive phoneme to a non-contrastive one could change the meaning of the word where it occurs and sometimes the meaning of the whole sentence. This investigation is made at a secondary school with pupils from the seventh and the ninth grade and with adults. All participants read the same sentences and out of these readings an analysis is made. The analysis is primarily made out of a contrastive analysis theory perspective. The results disclose that the contrastive phonemes cause more problems in pronunciation than non-contrastive ones do.
