Abstract [en]
This paper is about what the green color stands for and how it is presented in and by the four characters Jay Gatsby, daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Fritzgerals frrequently uses the metaphors of colors in The Great Gatsby, and the most important color is green since it has so many different meanings. Green symbolizes love, hope, dreams and prosperity but also greed and jealousy. The green color is intertwined in all the above mentioned symbols by money and the perception that everything and everyone is for sale. Since money is so important in the novel, this paper also looks at how it affects relationships between people, at this particular time in American history. Futhermore, I claim that there are no affectionate relationship between men and women in The Great Gatsby since money and power is the main issue. Finally, I examine the possibility of a successfull relationship between Jay Gatsby and Myrtle Wilson since they have a great deal in common.
