Abstract [en]

The health situation of Swedish schoolchildren is unsatisfactory and has over the last twenty years been declining. This raises the question: how can health professionals and society assist children and adolescents in their quest for health? The aim of this literature review was to explore important considerations, from the student perspective, when designing health promotion initiatives aimed at children and adolescents in a school context. Since this mandates a deeper understanding of the thoughts and wishes of children and adolescents, only qualitative studies were included. Two themes could be distinguished in the analysis: Perceived health related determinants and Desired health promotive approaches. Perceived health related determinants, were divided into four subcategories: Relationships, Sense of belonging, Positive self-concept and Sense of pleasure. Desired health promotive approaches were divided into three subcategories: Support, Knowledge and Attributes of providers. The analysis of the ten studies clarifies the importance of children and adolescents having access to dependable and trustworthy adults to talk to. Future research should aim at developing methods for supporting parents, capitalizing on the ideas and desires of students, improving communication skills for health professionals and school personnel when working with children and adolescents.
