Abstract [en]

Differnt techniques can be used when telling a story. A narrator might lie, skip parts of the story or exaggerate the facts in order the reader in a certain direction. These are some of the narratological tools explored in this essay through a study of Mineko Iwasaki’s autobiographical Geisha of Gion. I use different narratological theories when analysning the following questions: what kond of narrator is Mineko? Is she reliable or unreliable? Does her book have the typical features of a female writer, or does her way of telling her story contain elements that are often considered male? My conclusions are that Mineko writes in a typically male language when making straightforward descriptions. Further, Mineko strikes me as an unreliable narrator when describing events that took place more than 40 years ago un the form of dialogues, rendered word by word. I believe that it is impossible to remember a dialogue as precisely as Mineko is retelling it.
