Abstract [sv]

The study revolves around the issue of institutions of education in Spain. More specific about textbooks used during the period dating back from the early 1970 up until the late 1990. The theorital framework consists of earlier studies made by, for example, Ernest Gellner and Eric j Hobsbawm. The issues set in this study are of what kind of image was projekted to the masses during the period from 1970 up until 2000, and how is the regional history oresented in the national context. The model adoptes in this particular consist of an elite sending a message through a specialized instrument, in this case the educational system, to a receiver, here personified by the general population. The term nationalism derives from the political will, and need of, control of the states citizens. The study focuses on school textbooks and what kind of message the elite is sending through the messenger, the educational system. Important to bare in mind is the democratization that Spain undertakes from 1975 and onward. This means that an Interpretative comparative method is used to understand and see how the selfimage of Spain is projected. This factor may not, have some influence on the result of the study. The temporal and regional differences and equalities are also elementary to notice, because of shift of powerstructure. A conclusion from this study incorporates that there is a shift of message from the elites during the studied period of time. This shift is closely related to the democratic process that Spain undertakes during the three decades in which this study spains within.
