Abstract [en]
In this project we will construct different looking tags for various purposes including to mark physical locations, e.g. on skirting boards along the bottom of the walls discretely, such that all tags can be produced, identified as well as located efficiently and reliably by help of joint image synthesis and analysis techniques. The aim is to enable intelligent service robots in factories, hospitals, as well as in homes of senior citizens, so that they can navigate reliably to contribute to a more efficient functioning of the society, sooner than later. The project will, by mathematical methods, optimize orientations of visual curves that can survive harsh environmental conditions, from object to camera and then will optimize methods for error-free readings resulting in automatic decisions, for example, to emit the choice of control instructions moving a robot. Simply stated, it amounts to make a visual alphabet that offers two functions simultaneously: location and identity of symbols, and to provide for optimal methods to locate and decode the symbols of the alphabet by cameras. The project will primarily study to embed the payload (location and identity) in angle transitions of curves rather than their contrast, an idea that is inspired by FM radio (phase modulation) and that has revolutionized radio communication, which used amplitude modulation (AM) before.
