Det finns inget kvar att erövra: Upplevelse av att leva med myelom2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Multiple myeloma is a cancer illness that arises in the bone marrow. In Sweden 500-600 people per year get diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The purpose of the literature study was to highlight the experiences of individuals with multiple myeloma through the six dimension of pain. The study is based on a theoretical frame of reference. To get at overall picture of the individuals experiences of living with multiple myeloma, the result was described through the six dimensions of pain. The result shows that multiple myeloma patient´s social life becomes reduced, their habit changes and booth their physical and psychological health reduces. Pain, fatigue and infections caused by lower immune system affects the individuals. The knowledge of the illness in society is trivial and this makes the understanding for people with multiple myeloma and their illness slight. A proper pain assessment is necessary for the nurse to complete, to get a full understanding about the individuals and their quality of life. More research about the illness, treatments and medications is needed and the goal should be to cure the disease.

En förändrad framtid – Kvinnors upplevelser av att behandlats för cervixcancer2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Hematopoietic stem cell ageing is uncoupled from p16 INK4A-mediated senescence2009In: Oncogene, ISSN 0950-9232, E-ISSN 1476-5594, Vol. 28, no 22, p. 2238-2243Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Somatic stem cells are ultimately responsible for mediating appropriate organ homeostasis and have therefore been proposed to represent a cellular origin of the ageing process-a state often characterized by inappropriate homeostasis. Specifically, it has been suggested that ageing stem cells might succumb to replicative senescence by a mechanism involving the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p16(INK4A). Here, we tested multiple functional and molecular parameters indicative of p16(INK4A) activity in primary aged murine hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). We found no evidence that replicative senescence accompanies stem cell ageing in vivo, and in line with p16(INK4A) being a critical determinant of such processes, most aged HSCs (>99%) failed to express p16(INK4A) at the mRNA level. Moreover, whereas loss of epigenetically guided repression of the INK4A/ARF locus accompanied replicative senescent murine embryonic fibroblasts, such repression was maintained in aged stem cells. Taken together, these studies indicate that increased senescence as mediated by the p16(INK4A) tumor suppressor has only a minor function as an intrinsic regulator of steady-state HSC ageing in vivo.

Kvinnors livskvalitet efter mastektomi2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

To be confronted with a life threatening disease and having to go through mastectomy means changes to a woman's life. The breast is a symbol for femininity and having to lose that symbol can affect the woman's gender identity. Changes in life may affect quality of life. The purpose of this study was to highlight women's quality of life when they have gone through a mastectomy. The study was conducted as a literature review and current scientific research has been used. The result showed that a mastectomy can affect a women's quality of life in a negative way. Women of all ages who have gone through mastectomy showed less social-, emotional-, and physical function. Mastectomy is associated with less sexual attraction which affects the quality of life. Both younger and older women felt like their body image was affected when mastectomy had been performed. To raise their quality of life, social support showed to be one of the main factors. The woman's experience of anxiety when she is confronted with a life threatening disease will have a long-lasting effect on her subjective well-being. Anxiety initially predicted poorer quality of life. Future nursing research should focus on women's unique quality of life and investigate differences in prescribed nursing interventions related to mastectomy in order to present evidence based nursing interventions to reduce women's suffering and improve quality of life.

Patientens upplevelse av ett cancerbesked2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Every year, over 50 000 individuals in Sweden are diagnosed with cancer. The disclosure of the cancer diagnosis arouses emotions and is often associated with suffering and death. Receiving bad news may lead to changes in life and can also be seen as the beginning of a long and difficult journey. A scientific study based on 15 original articles was carried out with the purpose to identify the patient’s experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis and therefore increase the nurse’s understanding for the patient’s situation and deepen the knowledge of the subject. When examining the articles three themes were identified: information, emotional reactions and psychosocial support. The patient experience that it is important that the information is given in an open and honest manner. Patients also find it important that their emotional reaction is being observed as receiving the diagnosis. As the disclosure of the cancer diagnosis affects the patient’s further perception of the disease the nurse has an important role providing psychosocial support in various situations that may arise in connection with the disclosure. Continued research is needed to compare how guidelines for giving bad news to a patient correspond with the patient’s own experiences and preferences.

Föräldrars hopp i upplevelsen av att ha ett barn med diagnosen cancer2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Each year about 300 children gets sick in some sort of cancer in Sweden. That a child becomes ill in cancer do not only affects the sick child even the parents. Cancer diagnosis creates a crisis to the whole family. In connection with this crisis situation arising also the concept of hope. Parents hope in the experience of having a child with cancer. To enable parents to be able to have a chance to cope with the challenging situation it is important to illuminate the factors that can affect the parents hope in a positive or in a negatively way. What can the medical personnel do to eliminate the factors that are a threat to the hope and how hope can be maintained. Which corresponds to the literature study’s purpose. Five categories have been identified to reflect the result to describe the factors that promotes and threats the hope; Knowledge gives hope, Social support gives hope, family-centered care gives hope, Threats to the hope and Belief in the future gives hope. If the parents are well-informed, receive social support from family, friends and other parents in a similar situation and have belief in the future makes the parents to have good opportunities to maintain hope. However, there are factors that can threaten the feelings and experiences of hope.

Effects of long-term administration of cancer-promoting substances on oral subepithelial mast cells in the rat2002In: Anticancer Research, ISSN 0250-7005, E-ISSN 1791-7530, Vol. 22, no 5, p. 2623-2627Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role of oral subepithelial mast cells in the defence against tumours is a matter of controversy. The effect of established and suggested carcinogens, such as the carcinogen 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide (4-NQO) and Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), in combination with oral snuff on lower lip subepithelial mast cells (MC) was studied in rats. The rats were exposed to prolonged use of oral snuff. The test substances were administered in a surgically created canal in the lower lip of the rats. There were 15 rats in each test group and 10 rats in the control group. The amount of countable subepithelial mast cells decreased significantly when the rat oral mucosa was exposed to the oral carcinogen 4-NQO but the effect of oral snuff and HSV-1 infection was weak. Our findings suggest that mast cells play a role in immunological cell defence against chemical carcinogens. Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms.

Support from healthcare services during transition to adulthood – Experiences of young adult survivors of pediatric cancer2016In: European Journal of Oncology Nursing, ISSN 1462-3889, E-ISSN 1532-2122, Vol. 21, p. 105-112Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Improved survival rates of pediatric cancer have drawn attention on how to best facilitate long-term follow up and transition from pediatric to adult care. The transition process is multifactorial and necessitates the joint involvement of the patient, the family and the healthcare providers. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of support from healthcare services during the transition from adolescence to adulthood described by young adult survivors of pediatric cancer.

Methods: A mixed method with a convergent parallel design was used to evaluate the experiences of receiving support from healthcare services (eg pediatric oncology and pediatric clinic) during transition from adolescence to adulthood described by young adult survivors of pediatric cancer (n = 213) in a nation wide cross-sectional survey.

Results: A quantitative assessment of the experienced extent and satisfaction of support from healthcare services to handle physical, mental and social changes to continue life after the disease showed that a majority of the participants had received insufficient support. The qualitative analysis indicated a need for equal roles in healthcare to promote participation, a need to manage and process consequences of the disease, and a need for continuous support.

Conclusions: During transition to adulthood, there's a need for a personalized care plan that takes a holistic approach towards supporting the young cancer survivor in managing life in the best way. Identifying and handling the individual needs of pediatric cancer survivors is important for providing the resources and support required to increase the likelihood of successful transition to adulthood. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
