    Abstract

    In the world where every sector of industrial manufacturing is being converted toautomated systems, surface finishing processes like sanding and polishing seem to lag.This phenomenon is not surprising as these processes are complex to optimize. Therehave been projects going on with the support of European Commission to findsolutions under SYMPLEXITY (Symbiotic Human-Robot Solutions for ComplexSurface Finishing Operations). One of the projects in under this include poliMATIC(Automated Polishing for the European Tooling Industry). Halmstad University isinvolved in doing projects.

    This project took a portion of this study in aim to understand a foam material’s behavior used for sanding tool at the tip of a robotic arm. This is studied using a forcemeasurement system developed at Halmstad University. The project has two sectionsand starts with one; Understanding the force measurement system and upgrading innecessary ways. Two; studying how the foam material compressive hardness propertyis affected when the material is fit with sandpaper for sanding operation using theforce measurement system. The study finally revealed how the combination of thefoam with sandpaper affects the robustness of the material, and significantlyimproved the output of the system with by reducing the noise level with 40%.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to create a greater understanding of what happens inAlfdex’s separator in terms of natural frequencies, also called resonances. Try in asystematic way to find out where the problem is and produce a possible solutionto the problem. To achieve this smoothly, vibration measurements were made onthree different models with two variants, a total of six different variants. Themeasurements made with an electric shaker were set to run a sweep of 2-500Hz,which means that it increases the frequency from 20-500Hz with a constantacceleration of 2G. The measurement was first made on these six variants and, onthe basis of the results, it has been possible to compare with the modificationsmade.As the first modification, the disks in the separator were glued together to see ifthey made any difference from the previous result. As the next test spacers wereprinted out of the 3D-printer, that would replace the existing springs in theseparator, to aww what happens if we do not have any springs. There was also atest where the top of the separator the so-called house, was cut into a larger holeso as to see how the disks hold a constant amplitude relative to each other, whichmeans that the disks are not exposed to any natural frequencies. The springs werefilmed to see how they act and move, where it is clear that there are naturalfrequencies in the springs.Based on these tests, it can be concluded that the disk in question are not aproblem. The problem instead has its foundation in the springs that carry the diskstack throughout the separator, resonances in these give a great influence in theentire contents of the separator.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is a study conducted in collaboration with the engine performance group atHusqvarna AB. The study focuses on engine stability of smaller two stroke handheld enginesrunning on E10 (10% ethanol mixture in gasoline). The reason for the study is the new EUproposition that by 2020 all fuel must have 10 % renewable fuel content. To meet thisproposition Husqvarna has evaluated E10 and found that the engine stability of smaller twostroke engines are affected in a negative way by the fuel.The study focuses on events occurring prior to the combustion and mainly the carburetor. Theobjective for the thesis is to seek what contribution the events occurring prior to thecombustion have to the engine stability and find simple and implantable solution to improvethe stability with regards to the carburetor.The study has been conducted in three different work packages, system understanding to buildknowledge of how the carburetor operates, fault finding to seek potential attributes that canaffect the stability and fault mode analysis to seek why the attributes affect the stability.Furthermore, all the attributes found has been tested and validated on the engine to seek theircontribution to the stability.The conclusion made of the thesis is that with simple and implementable improvements of thecarburetor the engine stability could be increased with 40 %. A total of five differentattributes were found to affect the stability of the engine. Furthermore, a very detailedexplanation of how the carburetor operates and components inside the carburetor has beenestablished during the thesis.

    Abstract

    In year 2011 95 people drowned, that is an increase of 16 persons from 2010. Drowning in connection with boats is the most common cause and in year 2010 29 persons died in connection with boats.

    When rescue crew arrive to an scene of accident with a capsized boat they must improvise the rescue. It is very important that they turn the capsized boat to the right keel in order to secure that no one is stuck under the boat. The rescue crew cannot leave an abandoned boat out on the sea because it can cause new accidents and to tow a boat on the wrong keel is very difficult.

    TELF is a tool that facilitate the rescue with capsized boats. With TELF the rescue crew do not have to improvise the rescue work, they know directly what to do. TELF throws over the capsized boat and with the rescue boat as a counterforce they can drag the boat to its right keel again.

    TELF is designed to a turn capsized boats to its right keel, but it can also be used to drag a burning boat out from the harbour to avoid other boats from catching the fire. With TELF the rescue crew can feel secure, they do not have to improvise the rescue work, now they know directly what to do.

    Abstract [sv]

    Auto Deco Primer Valve är ett projekt som har resulterat i ett förenklat startsystem för tvåtaktsmotorer.

    Att starta en tvåtakts motor med dragsnöre är både tidskrävande och jobbigt, därför vill projektgruppen ge samhället en lösning på problemet.

    Genom ett befintligt koncept har syftet varit att fullborda detta system genom en ny innovativ lösning i form av en multifunktionel ventillösning.

     

    Ventilen och dess ingående system är tänkt att ersätta två funktioner som återfinns på de flesta tvåtaktsmotorer idag: Dekompressionsventil och Chokereglage

     

    Vår nya ventil gör att det tidigare manuella systemet automatiskt, och tar på så sätt bort de steg som måste utföras innan motorn startas.

     

    Det nya systemet som förverkligas i ”Auto Deco Primer Valve” kommer att medföra många fördelar som beskrivs utförligare längre fram i rapporten.

     

    Målet vid projektets slut har varit att ta fram en fungerande prototyp vilket projektgruppen har åstadkommit.

    Arbetet har inneburit en stor del av kreativt tänkande, för att kunna kombinera vetenskap om bland annat pneumatik med ett mekaniskt system.

     

    För att bygga ett hållbart system som klarar marknadens tuffa krav och samtidigt inte är beroende av elektricitet så har stor del av arbetet bestått av att utveckla, beräkna, dimensionera, samt förenklat systemets olika delar och sedan modellera detta i Catia V5 R20.

     

    Projektet har resulterat i en funktionsprototyp med fullständigt CAD-underlag som Husqvarna AB kommer att använda till att vidareutveckla systemet.  

    Med detta arbete vill vi ge samhället och framförallt skogsbranschen ett tillförlitligare hjälpmedel, genom en ny innovativ lösning, som gör att ett motorsystem för tvåtaktsmotorer blir mer driftsäkert, lättare att använda och snabbare att starta.

    Abstract [en]

    Heat transfer by natural convection occurs in many physical problems and engineering applications such as geo-thermal systems, heat exchangers, petroleum reservoirs and nuclear waste repositories. These problems and phenomena are modeled by ordinary or partial differential equations. In most cases, experimental solutions cannot be applied to these problems, so these equations should be solved using special techniques. Recently, much attention has been devoted to these methods to construct analytic solutions; such as the perturbation method. Perturbation techniques are dependent upon small parameter. Thus, it is worthwhile developing a new technique independent of small parameter. The Reconstruction of Variational Iteration Method technique is a powerful and convenient algorithm in finding the solutions for the equations. While this method is capable of reducing the size of calculation, it overcomes the difficulty of the perturbation technique or Adomian polynomials by applying Laplace Transform. In this paper an analysis has been performed to study the natural convection of a non-Newtonian fluid between two infinite parallel vertical flat plates and the effects of the non-Newtonian nature of fluid on the heat transfer are studied. In order to compare with exact solution, velocity and temperature profiles are shown graphically. The obtained results are valid with significant accuracy. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.     Abstract [en]

    Additive manufacturing and its related techniques have frequently been put forward as a promising candidate for planetary in-situ manufacturing, from building life-sustaining habitats on the Moon to fabricating various replacements parts, aiming to support future extra-terrestrial human activity. This paper investigates the mechanical behaviour of lunar regolith simulant material components, which is a potential future space engineering material, manufactured by a laser-based powder bed fusion additive manufacturing system. The influence of laser energy input during processing was associated with the evolution of component porosity, measured via optical and scanning electron microscopy in combination with gas expansion pycnometry. The compressive strength performance and Vickers micro-hardness of the components were analysed and related back to the processing history and resultant microstructure of the lunar regolith simulant build material. Fabricated structures exhibited a relative porosity of 44–49% and densities ranging from 1.76 to 2.3 g cm−3, with a maximum compressive strength of 4.2 ± 0.1 MPa and elastic modulus of 287.3 ± 6.6 MPa, the former is comparable to a typical masonry clay brick (3.5 MPa). The additive manufacturing parts also had an average hardness value of 657 ± 14 HV0.05/15, better than borosilicate glass (580 HV). This study has shed significant insight into realising the potential of a laser-based powder bed fusion additive manufacturing process to deliver functional engineering assets via in-situ and abundant material sources that can be potentially used for future engineering applications in aerospace and astronautics. © 2018, IMechE 2018.

    Abstract [en]

    This report will describe the development of a subsystem for force measurement on bicycle pedals. The force is going to be used as a control parameter in a motor controller to control an electric motor on an electric bicycle. The report focuses on force measurement and will not process any control system. There has also been a survey of alternative power supplies to the circuit boards to be used in this project. Energy Harvesting has been investigated as an alternative source. The aim of the project is to measure the force applied on the pedal in a good way for use in a control system.This work resulted in that the force applied on the pedals was measured on the crank arms. The force was being measured by strain gauge sensors in a test rig designed in this project. The force signal can be used in the intended control system. This report has explained when, during a pedal stroke, the force should be measured. Processing of the signal will be done furthermore in the motor controller to fit the requirements set by the control system.

    Virtual Prototyping and Physical Validation of an Inverted Pendulum: "Sea-Calf Bot"2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The work is motivated by the goal of linking reality and model, and to see if there is an opportunity to develop an inexpensive educational tool for training in cyber-physical systems.

    This project has investigated the possibilities to build a cheap inverted pendulum with controller and connect this with the modeling language Acumen. Acumen models is used for comparison with the actual prototype.

    To solve these problems has a 3D printer been used to create hardware, Arduino UNO for control and Raspberry Pi for enable communication with Acumen over WLAN.

    The result was a cheap inverted pendulum, which can be built for a cost around 750 SEK. Graphs created in Acumen and from data collected from sensors can be analyzed.

    With a model of the inverted pendulum system, the results show that Acumen can be used in the development of cyber-physical systems. There are differences between model and reality but also similarities.

    Abstract [en]

    Today many shooting ranges uses outdated systems for controlling their shooting targets. These systems may be inconvenient to both use and to program. During this project a new system for controlling shooting targets is developed, togheter with a rotation target prototype for air pistol shooting.

    The project aims to allow more members to easily learn how to use and to program their system. A system that is easy to use will also free more time for a shooting leader to superintend the shooters.

    The core part of the system is its reciver, which is epuipped with a Bluetooth Low Energy module to establish a connection with a remote handheld device.

    Both the reciever and rotation target prototype is developed. Different strategies for meeting the specified requirements are evaluated.

    The result is a system that recievs a program sequence from a handheld unit and controls the rotation target prototype as specified by the user.

    Abstract [en]

    Hälsoteknikcentrum Halland are working with different projects to find new technical solutions for problems in healthcare, they brought up the problem with the medical waste disposal together with representatives from Hallands Hospital in Halmstad. Today the nurses and caretakers experience the medical waste disposal as unpleasant since it means they have to deal with contaminated waste, the hospital is eager to develop a product that compresses the waste and improves the work environment for its employees.

    The product shall compress bags of 150 liters of medical waste, this shall be done in a user-friendly way based on specific requirements, the specification was developed in consultation with hospital employees. Through different experiments and examination of different methods, the most appropriate method to compress the bags were to press them. After developing the idea to a functioning method a prototype was made. The prototype uses pneumatics to press the air out of the bag, the contaminated air is filtered through an absolute filter and the bag is compressed over 50%.

    This graduate thesis has included a number of tasks, to read up on different areas, problem solving, construction and innovation. This has resulted in a well functioning prototype that meets the requirements.

Our task has been to present a suggestion for a solution of the packing of giveaways that the company uses.In the current situation the work is performed manually, and the company wants to automate the process. In the following report, we present the different solutions that we have developed in our definite model. It includes a picking solution, a shaking table and trays. The product choices we have made are based on existing solutions.To help, we have used Fredy Olsson's books in principle and primary structure. From this, we’ve taken help in the methods we have used.

    This thesis is a concept study, done for the company Husqvarna Group AB,concerning a chainsaw air filter. In this study, research is done regardingalternative and improved solutions based on current construction.

    The thesis is the concluding course for the mechanical engineer program atHalmstad Högskola.

    Existing air filters on Husqvarna chainsaw are leaking unfiltered air, and accordingto the public, does not give a reliable impression. Therefore, the goal for thisproject is to analyse and then make suggestions on how Husqvarna in the futurecan improve the existing solution. To achieve this, relevant literature andmethods that have been used during education are applied.

    The project results in a concept called “kassett”, which meet the requirementsthat are built up during the way.

    Abstract [en]

    Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM) enables the integration of a wide variety of components into solid metal matrices due to the process induced high degree of metal matrix plastic flow at low bulk temperatures. Exploitation of this phenomenon allows the fabrication of previously unobtainable novel engineered metal matrix components.

    The feasibility of directly embedding electrical materials within UAM metal matrices was investigated in this work. Three different dielectric materials were embedded into UAM fabricated aluminium metal-matrices with, research derived, optimal processing parameters. The effect of the dielectric material hardness on the final metal matrix mechanical strength after UAM processing was investigated systematically via mechanical peel testing and microscopy. It was found that when the Knoop hardness of the dielectric film was increased from 12.1 HK/0.01 kg to 27.3 HK/0.01 kg, the mechanical peel testing and linear weld density of the bond interface were enhanced by 15% and 16%, respectively, at UAM parameters of 1600 N weld force, 25 µm sonotrode amplitude, and 20 mm/s welding speed. This work uniquely identified that the mechanical strength of dielectric containing UAM metal matrices improved with increasing dielectric material hardness. It was therefore concluded that any UAM metal matrix mechanical strength degradation due to dielectric embedding could be restricted by employing a dielectric material with a suitable hardness (larger than 20 HK/0.01 kg). This result is of great interest and a vital step for realising electronic containing multifunctional smart metal composites for future industrial applications. © 2015 The Authors.

    This thesis is in line with the two author’s orientation within the mechanicalengineering program. The orientation is production development and the project hasbeen to develop a new packaging line based on a simple existing one. The existingsystem is located in a dairy plant and have old equipment and low capacity which theplant want to improve.

    The project has given the authors opportunity to use andwiden their knowledge within their area of education.The project includes a lot of research, the theory behind the project is amongst otherthings; production systems, evaluation systems, work ergonomics, models forproduction development, directives, rules and data for the machines and equipmentneeded for the project. Contact has been made with several machine suppliers to findinformation and to get prices.

    The method used was decided during the projects background study, the method isdeveloped by Bellgran & Säften (2005) and is a method designed purely forproduction development. Only applicable parts of the method has been used whichmeans that some parts where left out such as the part for deployment since theproject won’t be realized as of now. The method included a study of the currentsystem and similar production systems as well as interviews with the staff.

    This project has led to a number of concepts for a new production system that worksvery different compared to the old system. The authors are very pleased with theresulting new final concept and the improvements it lead to which is technical andeconomical. The main results is 50% improved capacity and reduced heavy manualtasks which has resulted in less need of line operators.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is a development project for a myoelectric prosthetic hand. That means a mechanical hand that is controlled and actuated by the user's own muscles on the residual limb. The thesis has led to a theoretical concept of a complete prosthesis and a non-complete physical prototype that provides proof of concept and functions.

    The thesis was as a means of providing the mechanical development of an alternative model of the prosthesis that is more functional and has the ability to offer the users a lower price than current models. The foundation of the project is that the development has been done on a user needs basis. This leads to customer requirements that are derived from the users themselves.

    The development begun with a wide research to obtain user feedback as well as technical data of different mechanical solutions. The focal point of the thesis is the mechanical aspect of the prosthetic while the electronic and sensory systems were implemented with the use of standardized components.

    The paper presents a development case of robotic machine for the dismantling of steel-concrete structures using diamondwire technology. The focus is on the application of the so called soft-wire with core made of superelastic alloy in placeof the steel rope traditionally used. Remote-controlled machinery operating in risky areas must be the simplest possiblefor reliability and to shorten the development time as generally these machines are tailored to the task. In the case ofdismantling of nuclear equipment there are two additional reasons to prefer simple designs: the need to decommission thecutting machinery together with the nuclear wastes and the limit to the use of electronics onboard due to radiation. Withsteel-cored cutting wires an active tensioner is needed to compensate for tension shocks occurring during cutting. This isthe most complex component of the cutting system and it requires a control system with actuation and some electronics.A significant benefit comes from the removal of the active tensioner. The current direction is the use of soft wires inplace of the ones with steel core. The steel rope is replaced by a core wire made of superelastic alloy. The tension ofthe wire is an independent cutting parameter. The selection of the core wire architecture and diameter, the point alongthe stress-strain curve where the wire superelastic alloy is in nominal conditions and the use of stress-strain plafond inthe curve are critical. The paper discusses first the principles of cutting with soft wire. Then the design of the cuttingsystem is addressed and the requirements of robotized cutting machinery is discusses. Different simulation schemes andapproaches are proposed to model cutting forces and system dynamics.In a multibody model with the wire treated asa discontinuous flexible winded along a system of pulleys. The data from the multibody analysis is used in the Finiteelements to characterize the static and dynamic response of Pseudo-elastic wire segment between the two diamond beads.

With the efficienciesgrowing in Swedish industry the supplier of this project has also seen an increased demand forsafety equipment. One product that has increased is their “Industryprotection” a productcreated to protect forklifts from colliding with walls in industry spaces.The purpose of this project is to generate a concept for a new design of the“Industryprotection”. It also involves creating a static FEM analysis of a collision between aforklift and the “Industryprotection”. The goal for the analysis is to create a steady modelwhich easily could be applied to different concepts. A study of the different calculationsmethods will also be executed.The project is split into two phases one conceptual phase and one calculation phase, the laststep of the project is to analyze the recommended concept versus the current one using theanalysis created.The work is limited to only go as far as a recommended concept is created, the dimensioning,final drawing, manufacturing preparation and validating is given to the supplier of the projectThe theory for this project is gathered from studying literature from market evaluation,computer aided calculation and design process. After theory for each phase of the project hasbeen gathered they have been modified to suit the phase. Also a large study of everyparameter in the FEM analysis has been executed to secure a stable model for the analysis.The output of the model became a simple and steady model which easily could be applied todifferent concepts. The study of different calculation methods of the model generated a fivetime increase of the amount of momentum the “Industryprotection” could endure.

    This thesis has been adjusted because some parts are classified, some sentences might have been changed. Electric bikes are a convenient mode of transport, a good choice when long distances or tough slopes can be an obstacle.The goal of the project was to create a prototype on a locking mechanism with an inductive charger for electric bikes.The idea behind the project was to develop a user-friendly locking mechanism, where the bikes would be charged inductively when they were locked. To implement the project facts about induction, battery charging and locking devices was needed to be acquired. Circuits for induction charging were created and a lock device was constructed. A microprocessor was used to control the entire system.A prototype was designed with a locking device and an inductive charger fixed in a bike rack.The entire project became very wide which resulted in that not all of the parts of the project could be completed. But the outcome of the project was a success since the charger and the locking device worked and also that the prototype was ready in time.

    The research in this paper aims to producing a home version machine that

    can dry and make biological waste into compact pellets. This product is

    made primarily for those who want to improve the environment and reduce

    the energy consuming process of separating the biological leftovers from

    other waste in the large processing plants and save money due to reduced

    pickups of waste. Since there is no commercially available product that

    does what we want to achieve we had to start from the beginning with both

    the design and the mechanical aspects. The result is a machine, that fits in

    our homes, and in an easy and inexpensive way reduces the amount of

    biological waste that needs to be collected by the public waste

    transportation system. This is done without reducing any of the energy in

    the waste and it can still be used to compost or by large-scale plants that use

    the waste to make electricity. The last aspect of drying the waste is that it

    stops bacteria growth; hence there will be no smell or decomposing.

    Our thesis is made in collaboration with Autoliv Sweden and the department Global Development Seatbelt in Vårgårda.

    Autoliv was founded in 1953 by two brothers from Vårgårda. Since then, they have become world leading in automotive safety and cooperates with several major automotive companies.

     

    The aim of the project was to evaluate a concept that Adrian Bud for Global Development Seatbelt department in Vårgårda had come up with. The concept aims to simplify the design and reduce the number of parts in an adaptive load limiter (LLA). With a reduction in the number of parts, the price for the LLA would decrease and also make assembly easier.

     

    An LLA adjusts the chest compression from the seatbelt in a crash sequence. This helps reducing the injury that might result from such chest compressions in a crash. The load limiter ensures that the slowdown of the body is done in a smooth manner by adjusting the amount of belt released.

     

    Our concept evaluation has included conceptual design, primary design, visualization of design in Catia V5 and FEM analysis. Finally prototypes were built with the help of Autolivs central workshop and tests were performed at Autoliv. The report also includes analyzes of the results, recommendations for the continuation of work and development and a critical review of the evaluation.

    The tradeoff between the power saving and the queuing delay in LTE/LTE-A radio devices with Discontinuous Reception (DRX) Mechanism is discussed. Two optimization problems to tune the DRX parameters are formulated. An optimal performance determined by exhaustive search over a large parameter set and a reduced parameter set, obtained by disabling short DRX cycles, is compared.

    Abstract [sv]

    Detta examensarbete inom biomekanik var ett produktutvecklingsprojekt av ett medicintekniskt instrument för mätning av statisk muskelstyrka i lårmuskulaturen (quadriceps). Instrumentet utvecklades med utgångspunkt från instrumentet Stig Starke som blivit föråldrat och förfallet. Stig Starke nyttjas främst av sjukgymnaster på Sahlgrenska universitetssjukhuset med syfte att exempelvis utvärdera effekter av sjukgymnastisk behandling. Behovet av en ny version av instrumentet är stort både inom kliniskt arbete och inom forskning. En ny version av instrumentet skulle hjälpa sjukgymnaster och forskare till att kunna fortsätta mäta muskelstyrkan i quadriceps på ett snabbt och enkelt sätt.

    Syftet och målsättningen med detta examensarbete var att utveckla Stig Starke-instrumentet så att mätningar av maximal statisk styrka i lårmuskulaturen (quadriceps), i enheten Newton, kan göras på patienter inom sjukvård och rehabilitering. En problemanalys i form av Workshop gjordes hos användarna på Sahlgrenska universitetssjukhuset. Problemanalysen tillsammans med en förstudie lade grunden för koncept i form av krav och önskemål till nya versionen av instrumentet. Önskemål på användarvänlighet av instrumentet och standardisering av patientens kroppsposition stod högt i prioritering.

    Via dynamisk produktutveckling och biomekaniska metoder där användarna (sjukgymnasterna) var i fokus kunde ett koncept väljas ut och tillverkas till en funktionell prototyp. Sex nyckelord för arbetet är quadriceps, muskelkraft, instrument, antropometri, användarvänlighet och standardisering. Funktionella prototypen visade via produktutvärdering att goda utvecklingsmöjligheter finns för den nya versionen, då den visade på hög användarvänlighet och standardisering. Behovet av en ny version av instrumentet kommer att finnas kvar tills ett likvärdigt instrument som Stig Starke kan tillämpas i verkligheten.

    Abstract [en]

    Non-linear acoustic technique is an attractive approach in evaluating early fatigue as well as cracks in material. However, its accuracy is greatly restricted by external non-linearities of ultra-sonic measurement systems. In this work, an acoustical data-driven deviation detection method, called the consensus self-organizing models (COSMO) based on statistical probability models, was introduced to study the evolution of localized crack growth. By using pitch-catch technique, frequency spectra of acoustic echoes collected from different locations of a specimen were compared, resulting in a Hellinger distance matrix to construct statistical parameters such as z-score, p-value and T-value. It is shown that statistical significance p-value of COSMO method has a strong relationship with the crack growth. Particularly, T-values, logarithm transformed p-value, increases proportionally with the growth of cracks, which thus can be applied to locate the position of cracks and monitor the deterioration of materials. © 2018 by the authors.

    Abstract [en]

    This master thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Fagerström Industrikonsult AB in Helsingborg. Fagerström Industrikonsult AB is an engineering company, specialized in mechanical and mechatronic products across a wide range of industry segments. One of the company's previous project, which is among other sub-products based on pressurized vessels, and that will be reused for a new project, needs an updated analysis against fatigue failure.In order to sell or use a pressurized equipment in Europe, the manufacturers must comply with the European Directive 97/23/EC, also called PED-directive. This directive sets the rules for design, production, marking and inspections. In Sweden, this directive is described in “Arbetsmiljöverkets Författningssamling” (AFS 1999:4 2011). In order to meet all the design and manufacturing requirements for pressure vessels that are required by the PED Directive, it is required to use harmonized standards. In this thesis, pressure vessel standard (SS-EN 13445-3: 2014) is used, which sets the rules for design and verification of pressure vessel.One of the projects funded by the European Commission, showed that 25 % of all pressure equipment failure are caused by fatigue. Pressure vessel is one type of these pressure equipment, which is most vulnerable to damage caused by fatigue. Fatigue failure has been known since the beginning of 19th century and this phenomenon has been studied for a long time. Under this extensive period of time, methods have been succefully developed for analytical models and prediction techniques as well as safe and accurate life calculations for steel structures. Fagerström Industrikonsult AB is today seeking a method to perform fatigue analysis of pressure vessels in accordance with European pressure vessel standard, where the linear static analysis is performed using the finite element method. The company is also pursuing more knowledge of the subject so its designers have more understanding of fatigue phenomena in order to be able to set reasonable requirements during design stage for production and in order to prevent this phenomena.
