Social responsibility in connection with business closures: A study of closures of Ericsson Telecom facilities in Norrköping and Linköping2010In: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, E-ISSN 1461-7099, Vol. 31, no 4, p. 537-555Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present article analyses why and how Ericsson Telecom assumeda greater responsibility than was legally required when it dismissedmore than 23,000 employees in Sweden at the beginning of the21st century. The analysis starts from neoinstitutional theoryand is based on case studies of the company’s closuresin Norrköping and Linköping. The article focuses,in particular, on the interaction between Ericsson, the tradeunions, the County Administrative Board, the County Labour Board, the Public Employment Service, the Swedish Employment SecurityCouncil, the government and the respective municipalities. Itis shown that the greater responsibility taken by Ericsson wasbased on its desire to maintain legitimacy by taking into considerationprevailing societal expectations regarding the company’sbehaviour.

Befolkning, samhälle och förändring: Dynamik i Halmstad under fyra decennier2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Changes in society are often discussed on an aggregated level and it is argued that society is changing from a modern industrial society to a post-industrial society. Through studying changes on a local level it is possible to study the complexity and variations of the general and aggregated theories of societal changes, and place changes in a context of time and place. The main object of this study is to analyse change in a locality. The study is a case study which studies Halmstad, a municipality on the west coast of Sweden, between the years of 1968 and 2006. The empirical material consists of analysis of demographic statistics and labour market statistics, using official statistical databases. The empirical material also consists of an analysis of official and historical documents as well as interviews with persons active in Halmstad. Three time periods are identified in the analyses which are characterised by different patterns in the population. The periods are also characterised by changes in the labour market and the employment of the population. These changes are analysed through the interplay between actors in the locality and actors and influences from outside the locality. Through the analysis of reflexivity it is shown how change and stability are interrelated through the interplay between the new and existing or innovation and tradition.

Högskolor och institut – normsystems roll i samarbete2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Collective Learning in Innovative Networks2005Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

There are different forms for boundary-crossing learning in and between organizations. One growing form is network. This paper will present a study of collective learning in two innovative networks at the west coast of Sweden. One network is about regional health and growth, the other about leadership development among general directors. Representatives from different organizations meet to learn from each other’s practice. How does this learning take place? What supports and what prevents it? Does it have any effects in their own organizations? Data has been collected through questionnaires, observations, systematic reflections and focus interviews. Results show that the participants express great satisfaction with their outcomes on a personal base. It gives them inspiration, ideas, knowledge and contacts. It also gives them support, strength and self-confidence. One important factor in this context is differences. The participants are coming from different organizations, have different perspectives and experiences. The findings show interesting variances between the two networks that has effects on the type of learning. A problem is the transformation of learning from the network, by the participants into their organizations. There seems to be some important learning barriers. This will be further discussed in the paper.

Interactive research and joint learning for practical contributions2009In: Journal of Workplace Learning, ISSN 1366-5626, E-ISSN 1758-7859, Vol. 21, no 3, p. 240-251Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine whether universities can find ways to make more practical contributions through collaboration, collective reflection and joint learning. Design/methodology/approach – The approach takes the form of action research and cooperation in three different development networks in Sweden. Data are analyzed by theories on science in society, organizational learning, dialogue and reflection. Findings – Results show that the participants in the networks reduced their insecurity and increased their competence to handle change. The dialogue, exchange of experiences and systematic reflections gave ideas, knowledge and contacts that supported them in their work life and inspired them to take development action. Research limitations/implications – Researchers can contribute to the development process by acting as facilitators and using interactive methods for joint learning. Coming from different cultures and aiming to collaborate under equal and democratic conditions, all involved actors must have an attitude that is humble and free of an assumed prestige. Practical implications – External development networks with university participation can be a useful tool for internal development. Originality/value – Interactive research is a possible way for universities to make practical contributions at work. All academics who work with applied research should consider this approach.

Lärande nätverk: En social oas i utvecklingsprocessen2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

In 1997 a new university law imposed Swedish universities a third mission. In addition to research and teaching, universities now have to “collaborate with the surrounding society”.

This new law was quite indistinct which raises questions about how, how much and in what way the co-operation between university and society should be performed. What obstacles and possibilities are there for real deep cooperation between such different cultures as the academic sector, the commercial private sector and the political public sector?

In our paper we reflect upon the collaboration between research and practice from two different processes where we have been involved as action researchers. Both these processes were aimed to bridge the gap between the academic world and the industry and public sector. We reflect upon our role as researchers in relation to the role of the practitioners. What were our different incentives and expectations when entering a joint learning process? What did we learn and what different knowledge was there to serve our different needs?

We discuss the two cases by highlighting the research methods, where researchers and practitioners in joint action take part in development processes, and how these processes both contribute theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge to as well academy as working life. But we also discuss the difficulties in handling the role as action researcher and the problems faced when people from different cultures and with different expectations act together.

Regionförsök och demokrati – demokratisk legitimitet och regionalt utvecklingsarbete i Skåne och Västra Götaland2005 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Small and medium sized enterprises are an important feature of the Swedish industrial infrastructure. The formation of collaborative networks is seen as an important means for dealing with a shortage of financial, technical and other resources. This article deals with the start up and development of two networks involving managers of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and researchers from the Centre for Working Life Research and Development of Halmstad University. The striking features of the various phases of the development of the networks, as well as of those of the role of the researchers, are presented and discussed. Some important recent developments, such as connections between networks and community-based relationships, are also revealed.
