    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Human response to wind turbine noise: perception, annoyance and moderating factors2007Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Aims: The aims of this thesis were to describe and gain an understanding of how people who live in the vicinity of wind turbines are affected by wind turbine noise, and how individual, situational and visual factors, as well as sound properties, moderate the response.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a flat, mainly rural area in Sweden, with the objective to estimate the prevalence of noise annoyance and to examine the dose-response relationship between A-weighted sound pressure levels (SPLs) and perception of and annoyance with wind turbine noise. Subjective responses were obtained through a questionnaire (n = 513; response rate: 68%) and outdoor, A-weighted SPLs were calculated for each respondent. To gain a deeper understanding of the observed noise annoyance, 15 people living in an area were interviewed using open-ended questions. The interviews were analysed using the comparative method of Grounded Theory (GT). An additional cross-sectional study, mainly exploring the influence of individual and situational factors, was carried out in seven areas in Sweden that differed with regard to terrain (flat or complex) and degree of urbanization (n = 765; response rate: 58%). To further explore the impact of visual factors, data from the two cross-sectional studies were tested with structural equation modelling. A proposed model of the influence of visual attitude on noise annoyance, also comprising the influence of noise level and general attitude, was tested among respondents who could see wind turbines versus respondents who could not see wind turbines from their dwelling, and respondents living in flat versus complex terrain.

Results: Dose-response relationships were found both for perception of noise and for noise annoyance in relation to A-weighted SPLs. The risk of annoyance was enhanced among respondents who could see at least one turbine from their dwelling and among those living in a rural in comparison with a suburban area. Noise from wind turbines was appraised as an intrusion of privacy among people who expected quiet and peace in their living environment. Negative experiences that led to feelings of inferiority added to the distress. Sound characteristics describing the amplitude modulated aerodynamic sound were appraised as the most annoying (swishing, whistling and pulsating/throbbing). Wind turbines were judged as environmentally friendly, efficient and necessary, but also as ugly and unnatural. Being negative towards the visual impact of the wind turbines on the landscape scenery, rather than towards wind turbines as such, was strongly associated with annoyance. Self-reported health impairment was not correlated to SPL, while decreased well-being was associated with noise annoyance. Indications of possible hindrance to psycho-physiological restoration were observed.

Conclusions: Wind turbine noise is easily perceived and is annoying even at low A-weighted SPLs. This could be due to perceived incongruence between the characteristics of wind turbine noise and the background sound. Wind turbines are furthermore prominent objects whose rotational movement attracts the eye. Multimodal sensory effects or negative aesthetic response could enhance the risk of noise annoyance. Adverse reactions could possibly lead to stress-related symptoms due to prolonged physiological arousal and hindrance to psychophysiological restoration. The observed differences in prevalence of noise annoyance between living environments make it necessary to assess separate dose-response relationships for different types of landscapes.

Living in the Vicinity of Wind Turbines - A Grounded Theory Study2007Ingår i: Qualitative Research in Psychology, ISSN 1478-0887, E-ISSN 1478-0895, Vol. 4, nr 1-2, s. 49-63Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Little is known of wind turbines' impact on people living in their vicinity. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how people perceive and are affected by wind turbines in their living environment. In-depth interviews with 15 informants, strategically chosen to form a heterogeneous group, were analyzed using the constant comparative method of grounded theory. The informants were to different extents affected by the swishing noise, flickering light, and constant movement of the turbines' rotor blades. Some informants perceived the exposures as outside their territory while others perceived them as intrusion into privacy; a divergence partly determined by the informants' personal values about the living environment. The feeling of intrusion was associated with feeling a lack of control, subjected to injustice, a lack of influence, and not being believed. Informants used various coping strategies, such as rebuilding their houses or complaining, but mainly tried to ignore exposures from the wind turbines. The findings can help us to better understand the severe reactions wind turbines sometimes evoke and contribute to the knowledge base used when planning for new wind farms.

Wind power or uranium mine: Appraisal of two energy-related environmental changes in a local context2012Ingår i: Energy Policy, ISSN 0301-4215, E-ISSN 1873-6777, Vol. 44, s. 312-319Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores factors associated with the individual’s appraisal of anticipated environmental changes caused by energy production facilities. The study took place in a Swedish village where exploratory drilling, that could eventually lead to a uranium mine, was being conducted at the same time as a wind farm was approved. Results from the survey, which included the total population, were interpreted in the light of cognitive stress theory. Most residents thought that the wind farm would have a positive impact on the village but that the uranium drilling would have a negative impact; these opinions were closely related to attitudes towards wind and nuclear power. Perceiving the wind farm as positive was further predicted by young age, high education, being an ordinary rather than a committed recycler and having attended a meeting about the wind farm. A negative view of uranium drilling was predicted by the individual valuing closeness to nature, being a recycler, and having attended the uranium meeting. Psychological factors such as concerns for the environment (manifested as pro-environmental behaviour), valuing closeness to nature, and involvement impinge on the appraisal process and should be considered when new developments are presented. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

    Audio-visual reactions to wind turbines2003Ingår i: Acta Acoustica united with Acustica, ISSN 1610-1928, E-ISSN 1861-9959, Vol. 89, nr Suppl.Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A cross sectional study with the aim of evaluating dose response relationships between noise exposure from wind turbines and subjective reactions was performed in a flat landscape in Sweden. The study area comprised 16 turbines. Subjective reactions were obtained by a questionnaire, which purpose was masked. The response rate was 69% (356 respondents). Outdoor noise levels (dBA) were calculated for each dwelling at 2.5 dB intervals. The results showed a significant dose response relationship between noise level and annoyance. The prevalence of noise annoyance was comparatively high. In the categories of greatest noise exposure 37.5-40 dBA and >40 dBA, 20% (95%Cl: ±12.4) and 36% (95%Cl: ±18.4) were very annoyed. The noise only explained part of the annoyance. Noise annoyance was also correlated to visual factors such as the respondents’ opinion of the turbines’ impact on the landscape. To further study interactions between noise annoyance and visual disturbance, the shadows from wind turbines (hours/year) were calculated for each respondent and used as dose for annoyance of shadows, but also as a variable when trying to explain noise annoyance. The results of the analysis and the possible interactions between audio and visual annoyance will be presented at the conference.

Wind turbine noise, annoyance and self-reported health and well-being in different living environments2007Ingår i: Occupational and Environmental Medicine, ISSN 1351-0711, E-ISSN 1470-7926, Vol. 64, nr 7, s. 480-486Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of perception and annoyance due to wind turbine noise among people living near the turbines, and to study relations between noise and perception/annoyance, with focus on differences between living environments.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in seven areas in Sweden across dissimilar terrain and different degrees of urbanisation. A postal questionnaire regarding living conditions including response to wind turbine noise was completed by 754 subjects. Outdoor A-weighted sound pressure levels (SPLs) were calculated for each respondent. Perception and annoyance due to wind turbine noise in relation to SPLs was analysed with regard to dissimilarities between the areas.

RESULTS: The odds of perceiving wind turbine noise increased with increasing SPL (OR 1.3; 95% CI 1.25 to 1.40). The odds of being annoyed by wind turbine noise also increased with increasing SPLs (OR 1.1; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.25). Perception and annoyance were associated with terrain and urbanisation: (1) a rural area increased the risk of perception and annoyance in comparison with a suburban area; and (2) in a rural setting, complex ground (hilly or rocky terrain) increased the risk compared with flat ground. Annoyance was associated with both objective and subjective factors of wind turbine visibility, and was further associated with lowered sleep quality and negative emotions.

CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to take the unique environment into account when planning a new wind farm so that adverse health effects are avoided. The influence of area-related factors should also be considered in future community noise research.

"Kommer jag få gå nu?": En kvalitativ studie om förhållandet mellan bemanningsbranschen och prekaritet2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Revisiting the empirical model ‘Phases in the junior-to-senior transition of Swedish ice hockey players’: External validation through focus groups and interviews2017Ingår i: International journal of sports science & coaching, ISSN 1747-9541, E-ISSN 2048-397X, Vol. 12, nr 6, s. 747-761Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this study we continue to explore the junior-to-senior transition (JST) process in Swedish ice hockey by validating the empirical model ‘Phases in the JST of Swedish Ice Hockey Players’ created in our previous study (Stambulova et al., 2017). More specifically, we collected opinions and critical reflections of fifteen senior professional players and expert coaches about the empirical model as a whole and about the content of each JST phase, and then converted the original empirical model into its validated version (further – the validated model). Professional ice hockey players and first league coaches formed three focus groups, while three senior coaches were interviewed individually. All were encouraged to critically reflect on the empirical model. The data from all sources were analysed following guidelines of the thematic (deductive) analysis, complemented by quantitative measurements of the participants’ agreement with the content of the empirical model. Results supported the sequence and designations of the JST phases (i.e., preparation, orientation, adaptation, and stabilization), as well duration of the JST (i.e., up to four seasons) outlined by the empirical model. We were also able to validate the psychological content (perceived demands, resources, barriers, coping strategies, and outcomes) of each transitional phase. Accordingly, five themes were reformulated, seventeen new themes were added and some themes were re-ordered during the conversion of the original empirical model into the validated model. To improve the readability of the validated model (from the bottom to the top) we also re-ordered sub-categories describing the psychological content of each JST phase. We conclude by discussing the validated model in relation to theoretical frameworks and previous research and providing some methodology, future research, and practice-oriented reflections addressed to researchers, coaches and sport psychology practitioners. © The Author(s) 2017

Competition barriers and foreign subsidiary growth: propositions on the contextual role of strategic orientation2015Ingår i: International Journal of Business Competition and Growth, ISSN 2042-3845, Vol. 4, nr 1/2, s. 3-23Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A foreign subsidiary's way of breaking through exogenous barriers to competition triggers growth of the subsidiary and the firm as a whole. This article contributes to literature on international business strategy by developing a conceptual framework that underscores the contextual role of subsidiary's strategic orientation in breaking through the barriers. Propositions are developed based on analysis of four high growth subsidiaries of Swedish industrial firms operating in the USA. The propositions distinguish types of exogenous competition barriers encountered by the foreign subsidiary, and types of strategic orientation. First, it is proposed that the more extensive the foreign subsidiary's entrepreneurial orientation the weaker the negative association between a scale barrier and subsidiary's growth. Second, it is proposed that the more extensive the foreign subsidiary's market orientation the weaker the negative association between customer access barriers and subsidiary's growth. Contributions to literature and practical implications are discussed.

    Consistent resource base of a foreign subsidiary’s greenfield expansion: A conceptual framework and propositions2014Ingår i: European Business Review, ISSN 0955-534X, E-ISSN 1758-7107, Vol. 26, nr 1, s. 64-78Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose is to extend the understanding of the resource base of the industrial firm's greenfield expansion on a foreign country market once a wholly owned subsidiary has been established. Design/methodology/approach: A conceptual framework is developed relying on the resource-based theory of strategy. Resource bases in terms of value-adding activities of four Swedish industrial firms' subsidiaries in the USA are analysed. Four theoretical propositions are formulated regarding consistent associations among the activities and contingencies that are relevant to expansion on a foreign country market. Findings: The propositions show how foreign subsidiaries' value-adding activities are aligned with two contingencies: the corporate strategy manifested by the product/market knowledge transferred from the parent firm that enable local expansion and the subsidiary's knowledge of competition barriers that obstruct local expansion. The value-adding activity may be basic or advanced and may repeat the parent firm's activity. Research limitations/implications: US subsidiaries of four Swedish industrial firms were analysed. The propositions may be turned into hypotheses suitable for tests in statistical studies. A test may include firms from different home countries and subsidiaries on different host country markets. Practical implications: The conceptual framework and the propositions provide a ground for an industrial firm's decision to conduct a strategy of greenfield expansion on a foreign country market once a wholly owned subsidiary has been established. Originality/value: The framework is unique and emphasizes that both knowledge stemming from corporate strategy and knowledge of local competition need to be acknowledged in order to understand firm's greenfield expansion on a foreign country market. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Corporate strategy and the environment: fit through teleological approaches2013Ingår i: International Journal of Business Excellence, ISSN 1756-0047, E-ISSN 1756-0055, Vol. 6, nr 5, s. 572-583Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Complexity-based approaches to corporate strategy are particularly important in times of extensive environmental uncertainty where previous corporate predictions and forecasts regarding environmental changes frequently turn out to be invalid. The purpose of the article is to develop a framework that integrates corporate strategy and complexity-based teleological approaches. The framework is accompanied by propositions that contribute to literature by showing what teleological approaches are consistent within different corporate strategies and environmental settings. The propositions represent ways of achieving a fit between the number of freedom degrees in corporate strategy formulation and the level of environmental uncertainty. The application of teleological approaches in the context of corporate strategy generates additional and valuable insights to both theory and practice. Copyright © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

"Föds man i det eller? Vad?": En diskursanalytisk studie av förskollärares utsagor gällande genus, jämställdhet och normer i förskolan.2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Is innovation research contingent on competitive context?: A systematic review of research in the agriculture and forest industry2016Ingår i: European Business Review, ISSN 0955-534X, E-ISSN 1758-7107, Vol. 28, nr 2, s. 225-247Artikel, forskningsöversikt (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to extend the understanding of innovation research and its contextual boundaries.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper opts for a systematic review of literature on innovation. Differences between innovation research that is conducted in a competitive context where there is great rivalry is compared with research in a context characterized by strong buyer power are analysed. In particular, the review compares type of innovation under investigation and level of which the innovation occurs.

Findings – It was found that competitive context significantly separate the type of innovation under investigation and innovation at different levels. Thus, the findings provide insights on the importance of competitive context to innovation research.

Research limitations/implications The findings have implications for the understanding of the sources and directions of innovation, and the formation of innovation at the level of the firm and the industry. Also, the review provides a relevant foundation for further research.

Practical implications – The review provides a ground for managerial decision-making regarding innovation. A manager wishing to innovate is advised to evaluate the competitive context. The evaluation is crucial, as the context facilitates different types and levels of innovation.

Originality/value – The review is unique in its emphasis that reviewing studies of innovation requires the consideration of competitive context.

Is innovation research contingent on context?: A systematic review of research in the agricultural and forest industries2015Ingår i: 19th McGill International Entrepreneurship Conference: International Entrepreneurship in a Multi-Speed Global Economy: Opportunities and Challenges, 27–29 August 2015, London: University of London , 2015, s. 65-65Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to extend the understanding of innovation research and its contextual boundaries.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper opted for a systematic review in reviewing literature on innovation. Variation in innovation research that is conducted in the agricultural and forest industry context was analysed. In particular, the review compared type of innovation under investigation and innovation at different levels.

Findings – The paper provides insights on the importance of industry context to innovation research. It was found that industry context significantly separate the type of innovation under investigation and innovation at different levels.

Research limitations/implications – The findings have implications for our understanding of the sources and directions of innovation, and the formation of innovation at the level of the firm and the industry. Also, the review provides a relevant foundation for further research.

Practical implications – The review provide a ground for managerial decision-making regarding innovation.

Originality/value – The review is unique in its emphasis that reviewing studies of innovation requires the consideration of industry context.

Market entry mode and performance: capability alignment and institutional moderation2015Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Globalisation, ISSN 1753-3627, E-ISSN 1753-3635, Vol. 15, nr 4, s. 508-527Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The selection of mode of entering a foreign market is a key decision in a firm's internationalisation. Building on the resource-based view, this study examines important antecedents of firm's selection of a wholly-owned subsidiary and collaboration with other firms. Based on analysis of empirical data from Swedish manufacturing firms operating on several foreign markets the study found that: 1) greatermarket orientation (MO) and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) capabilities favour firm's selection of a wholly-owned subsidiary; 2) greater institutional distance between the domestic market and the foreign market favours collaboration with local firms; 3) an entry mode that is aligned with the capabilities and institutional distance is positively associated with firm's performance on the foreignmarket after the entry phase. Mode of Entry into Foreign Markets: a Study of Antecedents and Performance Associations2014Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Export is an important strategy for firms to grow, yet researchers tend to ignore how firms can exploit and develop their resource-based capabilities to improve export performance. Building on the Organizational Capability (OC) perspective, this study develops a novel approach on ways to improve export performance. Cross-sectional empirical data regarding Swedish firms were collected and analyzed in a number of ways, including application of multi-variate techniques. The study identifies associations between mode of entering a foreign market and the firm’s level of market orientation (MO) capabilities and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) capabilities. Entry modes include wholly-owned subsidiaries and collaborations with other firms. Also, the study shows that the associations are contingent on the institutional distance between the home market and the host market. Problems due to endogeneity are avoided as an association is established between a mode that is aligned with the capabilities and performance. The study found that firms possessing extensive MO and EO capabilities select a wholly-owned subsidiary. The analysis also shows that the institutional distance between Sweden and the export market moderates this association; greater distance favors collaboration with local partners. Moreover, aligning the selection of entry mode with firm-level MO and EO capabilities and institutional distance yields higher post-entry performance.

Dynamic capabilities and performance in foreign markets: Developments within international new ventures2015Ingår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship, ISSN 1570-7385, E-ISSN 1573-7349, Vol. 13, nr 1, s. 28-48Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Studies on the relationship between level of internationalization and performance of new ventures show conflicting results indicating a need for more in-depth understanding of the mechanisms underlying the relationship. This study draws on dynamic capability theory and extends the understanding of the issue. The study contributes to international entrepreneurship literature by developing a proposed model built on analyses of event histories of US operations of three Swedish international new ventures. The events take place during more than 20 years. It is proposed that the number of organizationally stable periods of the foreign unit strengthens the positive relationship between product/market knowledge transferred to the unit and its dynamic capabilities, and knowledge acquired locally by the unit and its dynamic capabilities. Also, it is proposed that dynamic capabilities aligned with the transferred and local knowledge are associated with high financial performance. Contributions to literature on international entrepreneurship are discussed. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Expansion, strategi och kunskap: En studie av svenska tillverkande företags lokala expansion i USA.2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Observed learning outcomes of integrated communication training in science education: skills and subject matter understanding2017Ingår i: International Journal of Science Education, ISSN 0950-0693, E-ISSN 1464-5289Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we explore how different ways of training communication skills can be successfully implemented in higher education, and which effects these activities may have on science students’ learning. Using content analysis, we studied a material consisting of 34 reports, written by 70 academic science teachers, as part of a teacher-training course on communication in science higher education. In the course, the teachers developed and implemented communication tasks into their content courses, and analysed and reported on the observed learning outcomes. The tasks covered both written and oral communication addressing different audiences, inside as well as outside of academia. We found that integrating different ways of communication training in science courses entailed improved skills in sharing and discussing science information, and in addition, increased subject understanding. Thus, we conclude that the integration of communication training may effectively support students’ science learning in higher education.

    Abstract [en]

In higher natural science education, the scientific report is the prevailing genre of writing. Despite the fact that communicative skills are highly valued in working life, earlier studies have shown deficiencies among science students. In this paper, we highlight the need for varied communication training, in particularly arguing for the possibilities that students’ popular science writing offers. Our study was based on a questionnaire answered by 64 degree project students in biology. The questions focused on the students’ own experiences of writing about their projects for the general public and what contribution the writing made to their learning of science. A vast majority of the students expressed that the writing helped change their perspectives and that they saw their subject and project in a different light. Many of the students described that the popular science writing made it easier for them to put the science content in a context, to better understand the aim of their own work, and the implications of their findings. We discuss the positive effects that popular science writing may have on students’ subject matter understanding and development of scientific literacy. Our concluding remark is that popular sciencewriting is a useful tool for reflection and that it adds significant value to the students’ capacity to change perspectives, understand their subject and develop scientific literacy. © 2015 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

    Abstract [sv]

On mountains and prophets: targeting majorities to support minorities by using norm-critics in health education2018Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 13, nr sup1: Equal Health, artikel-id 1522203Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This debate article advocates for norm-critics instead of empowering coping and pedagogy of tolerance as an educational approach to mitigate stigmatization as well as blame and guilt for health-deviant minorities within the field of health disparities. Norm-critics is a way of making members of the (presumably healthy) normative majority uncover and question their healthrelated norms and raise awareness for the processes by which members of that majority re/construct images of stereotypic figures (such as “the fatso” or “the couch-potato”) with certain personal character traits which are to be condemned and, in doing so, limit the acting space of those identified as examples of those figures. The approach, its theoretical background, arguments promoting norm-critics, and some suggestions for its practical application are presented. It is concluded that norm-critics render a valuable and much needed addition to the health intervention repertoire. © 2018 The Author(s). “Don’t stop believing!” From health religiosity to an equality-enhancing hermeneutic of health promotion2018Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 13, nr sup1: Equal Health, artikel-id 1555420Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Health beliefs are usually regarded as subjective understandings of one’s health. They can, however, be re-interpreted by drawing on the understanding that the structural features of the health discourse resemble the characteristics of a religion and on the spiritual dimension of health with its possibly salutogenic influence. The applicability of the notion of“health religiosity” and its consequences for individual health promotion are explored.

Method: Data consist of already existent semi-structured interviews. These have been reana- lyzed in a deductive-hermeneutical way by using a five-dimensional concept of religiosity as deductive template.

Results: The concept of religiosity proved to be productive and revealed that all health dimensions in the case are infused with spiritually ennobled ideas.

Conclusion: We conclude that, irrespective of their factual accuracy, the salutogenic potential of ennobled ideas may best be utilized by understanding them hermeneutically. An explora- tion of a narrative hermeneutic approach to individual health promotion is suggested as the merging of meaning horizons in a hermeneutic dialogue is expected to increase awareness of spiritualized aspects of health beliefs. This may mitigate healthism and health disparities. Moreover, three challenges for individual health promotion are anticipated: realizing the situation, recognizing its complexity and resisting a simplistic practical approach. © 2018 The Author(s). Neither a sinner nor a saint: Health as a present-day religion in the age of healthism2016Ingår i: Social Theory & Health, ISSN 1477-8211, E-ISSN 1477-822X, Vol. 14, nr 1, s. 129-148Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In Western societies, religious imagery is often used in conjunction with the topic ‘health’ in this biomedicalized, healthistic time, but is that enough to qualify the structural characteristics of the presentations and practices of health as a present-day health religion? And what may be gained by adopting such a perspective? This article explores these questions by a hermeneutical rereading, using a comprehensive list of 10 religious features derived from the sociology of religion on texts describing (a) religiously charged health phenomena, (b) the interconnection between health and society and (c) health theories. The results show that health can rightfully be called a religion, with characteristics resembling Weber’s protestant work ethic, which may accelerate the formation of a new economic and health-related underclass. Viewing health from a religious angle has the potential of introducing new concepts and ideas of religious origin into the sphere of health. We believe that this introduction will facilitate and inspire new ways of thinking about health which add a ‘religious edge’ to the seeming rationality of health, that is, an emotionalized commitment to health as a dignified authority, which an understanding of health as a moral obligation hardly captures. © 2016 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.

“This Group is Like a Home to Me:” understandings of health of LGBTQ refugees in a Swedish health-related integration intervention: a qualitative study2022Ingår i: BMC Public Health, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 22, nr 1, artikel-id 1246Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: When large numbers of asylum seekers immigrate to a country, civil society is encouraged to contribute to their integration. A subgroup of asylum seekers comprising lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) refugees are specifically deemed vulnerable to developing health and integration problems due to the double stigma of being a sexual/gender minority and a refugee. The Swedish Federation for LGBTQ Rights (RFSL) is a civil societal organization that has established the support group “RFSL Newcomers,” a health-related integration intervention that targets such refugees. The aim of the present study is reconstructing the subjective understanding of health of LGBTQ refugees. Methods: Eleven participants in Newcomers and eight organizers were interviewed about LGBTQ refugees’ experiences of migrating and participating in RFSL Newcomers. Qualitative content analysis was used to reconstruct subjective understandings of health that were constructed in these narratives. As the data did not originally concentrate on exploring understandings of health, a broad theoretical approach was used as a heuristic for the analysis, which focused on the common everyday approach of conceptualizing health as wellbeing. Results: The narratives revealed three interconnected, interdependent categories of understanding health in which tensions occur between wellbeing and ill-being: belonging versus alienation, security and safety versus insecurity, and recognition versus denial. The categories contribute to an overarching theme of health as framed freedom – i.e., freedom framed by conditions of society. Conclusions: For our participants, belonging, recognition, and security/safety are conceptual elements of understanding health, not its social determinants. Thus, these understandings emphasize relational and existential meanings of health (theoretical implication). As for practical implications, the understandings of health were connected to being either inside or outside the Newcomers group and a new society, depending on whether LGBTQ refugees comply with social requirements. As a significant actor that is representative of the cultural majority and a facilitator of LGBTQ refugees’ resettlement process, RFSL provides LGBTQ refugees with crucial orientations for becoming a “good migrant” and a “good LGBTQ person,” yet a “bad bio-citizen.” Generally, organizers of interventions may enhance the effectiveness of their interventions when relational, existential, and biomedical understandings of health are all incorporated. © 2022, The Author(s).

Room to move as room to improve? – Health-related integration interventions in civil society2019Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Migrant groups belong to one of the most vulnerable sections of society, where issues of health inequalities and integration are at stake. Civil society is often highlighted as being an important actor in the integration of newly-arrived citizens and has also been encouraged to help migrants improve their health. The aim of the study was to explore what aspects of general and health-related acculturation and health work are expressed in research into health-related integration-interventions for migrant groups provided by civil society agents. An integrative review has been conducted. By searching databases, journal websites and reference lists, ten articles could be identified. The data has been analyzed using a concept of acculturation, different approaches to health work and the health discourse as a theoretical framework. Two different accumulations of studies have been identified: an assimilation-integration spectrum and an integration-separation spectrum. The interventions in the assimilation-integration spectrum tend to promote assimilation to the host culture and to a Western view of health. Most of these interventions are driven by representatives of the host culture. The interventions in the integration-separation spectrum are characterized by a greater openness concerning home-cultural understandings of health, alongside to an appreciation of home culture in general. These interventions are mostly migrant-driven. The acculturation strategies suggested by migrant-driven organizations tend to be orientated towards integration, whereas the strategies of native-driven organizations are more orientated towards assimilation. Thus, an awareness of basic ideas and methods in health intervention work is regarded as being crucial for civil society organizations.

Health-related integration interventions for migrants by civil society organizations: an integrative review2021Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 16, nr 1, artikel-id 1927488Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Migrants are a vulnerable group concerning health and integration. Civil society organizations are deemed important for the integration and health of migrants and have been encouraged to help. This study explored health and acculturation, as expressed in research into health-related integration interventions for migrant groups provided by civil society organizations.

Methods: Databases, journal websites and reference lists were searched in an integrative review. Thirteen articles were found and analysed using concepts of health strategies/perspectives and of acculturation with regard to general and health culture.

Results: Studies were divided between two primary spectrums: 1) assimilation-integration and 2) integration-separation spectrum. Spectrum 1 interventions tend to promote assimilation into the present host culture and into a Western view of health. They are mostly driven by representatives of the host culture. Spectrum 2 interventions are characterized by a greater openness concerning the home-culture understandings of health, alongside an appreciation of the home culture in general. They are mostly migrant-driven.

Conclusions: The different acculturating approaches in migrant and native-driven civil society organizations call for an awareness of their guiding health and acculturation assumptions and their applied perspectives and strategies. This awareness is considered crucial in order to achieve desired health and acculturation outcomes. © 2021 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

    Abstract [sv]

Psychosocial stress factors, including the relationship with the coach, and their influence on acute and overuse injury risk in elite female football players2018Ingår i: BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, ISSN 2055-7647, Vol. 4, nr 1, artikel-id e000317Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The relationship between specific types of stressors (eg, teammates, coach) and acute versus overuse injuries is not well understood.

Objective: To examine the roles of different types of stressors as well as the effect of motivational climate on the occurrence of acute and overuse injuries.

Methods: Players in the Norwegian elite female football league (n=193 players from 12 teams) participated in baseline screening tests prior to the 2009 competitive football season. As part of the screening, we included the Life Event Survey for Collegiate Athletes and the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (Norwegian short version). Acute and overuse time-loss injuries and exposure to training and matches were recorded prospectively in the football season using weekly text messaging. Data were analysed with Bayesian logistic regression analyses.

Results: Using Bayesian logistic regression analyses, we showed that perceived negative life event stress from teammates was associated with an increased risk of acute injuries (OR=1.23, 95% credibility interval (1.01 to 1.48)). There was a credible positive association between perceived negative life event stress from the coach and the risk of overuse injuries (OR=1.21, 95% credibility interval (1.01 to 1.45)).

Conclusions: Players who report teammates as a source of stress have a greater risk of sustaining an acute injury, while players reporting the coach as a source of stress are at greater risk of sustaining an overuse injury. Motivational climate did not relate to increased injury occurrence. © Article author(s) (or their employer(s) unless otherwise stated in the text of the article) 2018. All rights reserved.

Mental health among elite athletes in Norway during a selected period of the COVID-19 pandemic2021Ingår i: BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, ISSN 2055-7647, Vol. 7, nr 1, artikel-id e001025Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of mental health problems and satisfaction with life among different groups of elite athletes during a selected period of the COVID-19 pandemic and examine how COVID-19 related consequences were associated with these variables.

Design: Cross-sectional data collection during a selected period of the COVID-19 pandemic in Norway.

Participants: 378 elite athletes, mean age 26.86 (range 18–59), 159 females and 219 males, divided into Olympic-level and Paralympic-level athletes (n=194) and elite and semielite athletes (n=184).

Main outcome measures: Hopkins Symptoms Check List − 10; symptoms of anxiety and depression; Bergen Insomnia Scale; Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire Short; Canadian Problem Gambling Index and Satisfaction with Life Scale. In addition, we included specific COVID-19 questions (eg, financial concern, keeping daily routines, perceived coping and motivation).

Results: Symptoms of insomnia (38.3%) and depression (22.3%) were most prevalent within the sample. Symptoms of eating disorders more prevalent among female athletes (8.8% vs 1.4%) while symptoms of gambling problems were higher among male athletes (8.6% vs 1.3%). Olympic and Paralympic athletes reported lower levels of anxiety and depression symptoms than elite and semielite athletes. Financial concerns were associated with an increased risk of mental health problems, while daily routines and perception of coping were associated with less mental health problems and higher satisfaction with life.

Conclusion: Symptoms of insomnia and depression were the two most common mental health problems reported during this selected phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Elite and semielite athletes reported financial concerns as a risk factor for mental health problems at a larger degree than Olympic and Paralympic athletes. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2021. Elevers interaktion i textsamtal: En kvalitativ studie om elevers muntliga interaktioner i textsamtal2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

When Average Joe met the Inexperienced Superstar—a case study of the consequences for a university of a partnership with IKEA2021Ingår i: Higher Education, ISSN 0018-1560, E-ISSN 1573-174X, Vol. 81, nr 4, s. 795-813Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore how consequences from a university-wide partnership unfolded at various levels within a university and induced intra-organizational dynamics. This was achieved via an in-depth investigation of “The Bridge,” a collaborative partnership between the young mid-range Swedish Linnaeus University (“Average Joe”) and the home furnishing retail giant IKEA, which despite its global reach has only limited research capacity (the “Inexperienced Superstar”). Based on previous research that conceptualizes consequences of collaborations as changes in wide-ranging resource categories over time, this article develops a conceptual framework that advances the understanding of the consequences of collaborative efforts at both the level of faculty individuals and groups, as well as on a university-wide level. The study identified both differences and similarities between the two levels related to material, knowledge, and social resource mobilization, and revealed consequent tensions within the university due to an imbalance in material resource mobilization and social resource mobilization. The resource-based multi-level perspective that this study puts forward enables a more fine-grained and dynamic understanding of the conditions for undertaking and organizing university-wide long-term collaborative efforts © 2020, The Author(s).

Configurations of proximities in collaborative R&D projects as drivers of radical innovation2021Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the paper is to advance the scholarly understanding of how different combinations of proximities in collaborative R&D projects drive radical innovation. We use fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis to explore how configurations of geographical, cognitive, social and institutional proximity lead to radical innovations in collaborative R&D projects. The analysis generates three solutions. Each solution includes either cognitive, organizational or geographical distance, and all include social proximity. Thus, our results indicate that social proximity is central but not sufficient for radical innovation in R&D projects as it must be combined with a distance in another dimension. This shows that even though distance is a necessity to achieve radical innovation it seems difficult to cope with distance in more than one dimension at a time. The results contribute to novel insights in an area where previous research has generated contradictory and ambiguous results.

How industry collaboration influences research: The case of the Swedish Interdisciplinary Material Consortia 1990-20002019Ingår i: Industry & higher education, ISSN 0950-4222, E-ISSN 2043-6858, Vol. 33, nr 5, s. 289-307Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article provides new insights into the consequences of university–industry collaboration for the content and conduct of academic research by analysing the Swedish research funding programme for the so-called ‘materials consortia’, in place between 1990 and 2000. Using secondary sources, the analysis highlights the causality in university–industry collaboration and the impact of such collaboration on the academic research environments involved. While the funding programme was clearly aimed at influencing the conduct of academic research, impacts are seen mostly in content. Also, collaborative activities with long-term positive outcomes grew organically rather than top-down, with mutual trust and recognition at the operational level of great importance. The policy implications include the realization that the durability of efforts, from funders as well as at the operational level, is key to achieving deeper added value in university–industry collaborations. The article contributes to a deepened and broadened understanding of the multidimensionality of university–industry collaborations and their effects on research.  © The Author(s) 2019.

How Promotion Guidelines Reflect Swedish Higher Education Institutions’ Societal Collaboration Strategies2024Ingår i: Making Universities Matter: Collaboration, Engagement, Impact / [ed] Mattsson, Pauline; Perez Vico, Eugenia; Salö, Linus, Cham: Springer , 2024, 1, Vol. Part F2013, s. 99-122Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores the alignment between the stated intention of Swedish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to matter and the assessment of individuals to matter. To achieve this aim, HEIs collaboration strategies are compared with the criteria for the guidance for merits regarding docentship. Our analysis reveals a notable disparity: the societal collaboration visions outlined in strategies were rarely reflected in promotion guidelines. There is a substantial degree of variability in how these guidelines address collaboration merits. Despite the prevalence of ambitious strategies among HEIs, only a minority align these aspirations with guidelines that encompass the breadth and depth required for effective, high-quality collaboration. © The Author(s) 2024.

    A resource- and impact-based micro-level conceptualization of collaborative academic work2017Ingår i: Aslib Journal of Information Management, ISSN 2050-3806, E-ISSN 2050-3814, Vol. 69, nr 5, s. 624-639Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop new conceptual tools for analyzing how contemporary collaborative academic work is organized on micro-level, and its social and economic impact, in broad terms. Thus it makes a contribution towards a better view on how contemporary academics organize their professional activities in light of profound changes to the framework conditions of academic work, and a better view on the productivity and potentially very wide societal impact of academia.

Design/methodology/approach: Based on previous research, the arguments are developed conceptually. The paper builds both on previous empirical findings and strong traditions in organization theory (resource dependence theory) and innovation studies.

Findings: The paper achieves a synthesized conceptual view on impact of academia, strongly related to how individual academics organize their professional activities today, given the recent profound structural changes to the academic system. The paper launches resource dependence as a key concept for understanding contemporary academic work in a collaborative context, and sequences of impact as a key tool for conceptualizing the very varied role of academia in society.

Research limitations/implications: While building strongly on previous research, the paper is conceptual in nature and thus its value lies chiefly in assisting future studies.

Practical implications: The contribution can assist in policymaking by promoting the achievement of more accurate and better balanced models and appraisal schemes. Originality/value: The paper has theoretical originality and its synthesized argument about organizing and impact is of high value for current scholarly debate on these topics. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited.

    Abstract [en]

The concept of a Knowledge Triangle, i.e. the principle of strengthening the linkages between research, education and innovation, has emerged as a result of policymakers’ expectations on universities to assume a broader societal responsibility. Yet, little is known about how these tasks and their interaction are orchestrated at universities. We explore how they are manifested in the organisation and strategy of three different Swedish universities, and how the policy landscape conditions these manifestations. The chapter highlights that although the knowledge triangle remains a priority, explicit national policies are lacking, with the responsibility of integration falling on universities themselves. We observe a great diversity in how knowledge principles are orchestrated at the universities, e.g. through individuals’ interpretations and attitudes, and through management strategies and incentive schemes. The three tasks have largely been handled separately, with weak coordination and generally limited ambitions from university managements to forge new combinations of remits. At the individual and group level, we observe weak task articulation, although some role models serve as inspiration. Tensions emerge as the responsibilities of operationalising the Knowledge Triangle falls on individuals who sometimes lack the appropriate mandate and resources. These findings raise questions for further research and implications for policy and university management. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021

Valorizing the Humanities: Impact Stories, Acting Spaces, and Meandering Knowledge Flows2024Ingår i: Making Universities Matter: Collaboration, Engagement, Impact / [ed] Mattsson, Pauline; Perez Vico, Eugenia; Salö, Linus, Cham: Springer, 2024, 1, Vol. Part F2013, s. 211-232Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Despite its proven societal value, humanities knowledge tends to be marginalized in research policy; this has been a topic of debate for some time. In this chapter, we focus on the valorization of humanities knowledge, with the aim of comprehending the way this process engenders societal impact. We argue that historical impact stories offer an effective methodological approach for a deeper understanding of such valorization and its subsequent impact. Drawing on three humanities research cases from Sweden, we propose that valorization and impacts of humanities knowledge should be seen as processual and as influenced by societal actors who determine the premises and condition the somewhat unpredictable nature of such impacts. We introduce two concepts: (i) acting space, which involves access to collaborators, audiences, and channels that enable knowledge valorization, and (ii) meandering knowledge flows, which provides insight into the uneven and hard-to-predict nature of valorization. Through these concepts, we wish to provide a better and more nuanced understanding of how knowledge valorization in the humanities unfolds. By doing so, we hope to support humanities scholars to find ways of articulating their own modes of mattering. © The Author(s) 2024.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The post-COVID era digital Workplace - An ethnographic study.2023Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This research delves into the profound implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the adaptability of knowledge workers towards emergent digital work paradigms, encompassing four key themes identified through the analysis: Responding to Challenges, building routines, Relationship maintenance, and personal growth. The transformative potential of remote work has garnered recognition as an innovative organizational and personal operational approach. However, the pandemic-induced global restrictions prompted an unprecedented and obligatory transition to remote work for knowledge professionals. Employing an ethnographic lens, this study delves into an individual case, distilled from a prior qualitative inquiry featuring 38 comprehensive interviews conducted across distinct pandemic phases. Within this context, the study investigates the adaptability of not only two knowledge workers but also two managers, while recognizing the four aforementioned key themes. The overarching objective is to enrich the conceptual framework of adaptive behaviours inherent to knowledge work, intricately interwoven with resilience amidst crises.
