EU Trade: The Issues at Stake with China - With the exploration of International Political Economy2009Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract

China has been the second largest trading partner of EU in goods and the forth largest in services since it joined the WTO in 2001. For its part, the European Union has been China’s largest trading partner since 2004. Despite this, there are a range of issues at stake between the EU and China who are not only involved into economical disputes, but are also at odds on political matters. In this paper the authors conduct the study based on trade hindrances instead of trade achievements with the approaches of IPE based on the assumption: the tenser of trade-ties, the deeper the political dimension involved and the more delicate the relationship between Economy and Politics projected to be. Considering the limitation of time and space, the paper focuses primarily on the trade issues regarded from three different angles: the internal issues related to trade (e.g. trade deficit, IPR infringement); the external issues related to trade (e.g. human rights); the ultimate issues related to trade (e.g. technology). Instead of putting forth feasible resolution to these issues, the main feature of this paper lies in the analysis of trade issues in combination with the approaches of International political economy. It’s interesting and far-reaching to research EU (trade) from the perspective of IPE because as Michael Smith argued “The EU’s place in the IPE is challenging not only in the empirical sense, but also in the conceptual sense, for simple reason that (on the one hand) it is not a state and that (on the other hand) it performs a number of vital state functions in the IPE” (Michael Smith 2006, p.527).

Chairperson leadership and entrepreneurial strategic posture in SMEs: a conceptual framework and research model2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper outlines a conceptual framework with a research model for understanding innovation-promoting board leadership in entrepreneurial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The framework and research model depict the behavioural aspects of board leadership and how these are related to strategy development and the entrepreneurial strategic posture of entrepreneurial SMEs. Engaging in innovation is identified as a fundamental strategic posture in entrepreneurial SMEs. The advantages of a team production perspective on board leadership embedded in behavioural theories are discussed, as are the theoretical and managerial implications of the proposed framework and research model.

Governance for Innovation – Board Leadership and Value Creation in Entrepreneurial Firms2016Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation has identified, developed and empirically tested concepts associated with the capacity of chairpersonship to promote innovation in entrepreneurial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A multi-methodological approach is applied in five studies, comprising a systematic literature review, three empirical studies and a concluding conceptual paper.

The dissertation focuses on how the chairperson of the board of directors influences value creation in entrepreneurial SMEs. Value creation in this context is about the performance of strategic leaders at entrepreneurial firms’ upper echelons in acting and making strategic choices aimed at increasing firms’ capability to engage in innovation. Innovation is defined as the generation and/or adoption of an idea or behaviour, relating to a product, service, device, system, policy or program, which is new to the adopting organization.

Innovation has been widely recognized as a concept central to economic growth and societal development. Governance is widely recognized as essential for the support and development of innovations in firms. However, the academic literature is scarce regarding how the chairperson of the board can contribute to and promote innovation in SMEs.

This dissertation offers theoretical and empirical insights into how the chairperson of the board of directors influences value creation in entrepreneurial SMEs. In this respect, the dissertation offers a conceptual framework and a research model for understanding board leadership in promoting innovation in entrepreneurial SMEs. The framework and research model emphasize the behavioural aspects of board leadership and show how these are related to the development of entrepreneurial SMEs.

Furthermore, the findings in this dissertation provide actionable knowledge for practitioners and policymakers. In this respect, the dissertation contributes theoretical and empirical understandings of the benefits of employing external chairpersons with relevant knowledge and experience in SMEs. These insights also provide practitioners with advice on the qualifications and processes that can help them to develop innovation-promoting boards.

What do non-executive chairpersons do in owner-managed firms? – evidence from Sweden2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The board of directors is often emphasized as an untapped resource in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). However, literature and research addressing issues of boards and governance has by tradition focused on large publicly held corporations while leaving the SME context largely unexplored. In this study, the aim is to examine how board leadership and the external chairperson may contribute to value creation in owner managed SMEs. More specifically, this study adopts a process perspective by looking at the role of the external board chairperson in owner-managed SMEs and how this role is carried out by the chairperson by engaging in different tasks and interpreted by the owner-managers. The study is based on a case study and interviews with chairpersons, board members and owners of two owner-managed SMEs. The tasks and processes of the board of directors in SMEs are thus discussed. The leadership responsibility of the board is in the center of attention and an eclectic theoretical perspective is applied to the discussion. Findings provide theoretical and practical insights into chairperson’s task involvement in owner managed SMEs. Suggestions about implications and further research are presented.

Board chairmanship and innovation in growth oriented firms: Opening up the black box of leadership in the boardroom2014Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we present a framework of how board chairperson practices may promote innovation in small entrepreneurial firms. A case study approach is employed involving interviews with experienced board members. In our analysis we identify a set of chairperson practices related to issues such as structure, processes and culture, which serves as prerequisites for effective board work. In addition, we distinguish another set of innovation-driving chairperson practices related to the cognitive aspects of the board’s work. Overall, our findings provide a conceptual foundation for the value creating potential of board leadership embedded within the boundaries of the entrepreneurial firm and its operations.

Chairpersonship and board strategy involvement in small and medium-sized enterprises2018Ingår i: Journal of Leadership, Accountability and Ethics, ISSN 1913-8059, Vol. 15, nr 2, s. 86-97Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A critical issue when setting up a board of directors in small and medium-sized enterprises relates to the chairperson position. This study examines whether and how chairperson’s experience and leadership influence the extent to which the board of directors is involved in strategy. We rely on survey data from multiple respondents in 326 firms and use regression analysis to test our hypotheses. We find that chairpersons’ board experience and leadership efficacy have a positive and significant effect on boards’ involvement in strategy. Our findings provide ample support for the significance of chairperson behaviours in explaining board outcomes in firms.

The chairperson and board strategy involvement in SMEs2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

For decades boards of directors have been strongly encouraged to take on an active strategy role. However, while such behaviour is generally seen as an indicator of board effectiveness much is still unknown about drivers of board strategic involvement. This is particularly true for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that make up around 95 percent of all business enterprises. A critical issue when setting up a board of directors in SMEs relate to the chairperson position. In this study we seek to contribute to scholarly research and literature on actual board behaviour in SMEs by examining whether and how the experience and leadership efficacy of the chairperson influence the extent to which the board of directors are involved in setting the strategic direction of the firm. We rely on questionnaire data collected from multiple respondents in 324 Norwegian SMEs. The variables used are based on validated scales related to behavioral aspects of actual board work developed by corporate governance scholars. We use multiple regression analysis to test our hypotheses. Overall, we find that the board experience and leadership efficacy of the chairperson has a positive and significant effect on the extent to which the board of directors are involved in strategy in SMEs. To this end, our findings suggest that chairperson behaviours have a greater impact compared to structural leadership conditions in explaining board outcomes in SMEs.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

American Fast Food in Chinese Market: A Cross-Culture Perspective: The Case of KFC and McDonald's2009Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Culture differences play a significant role in the international marketing, which has drawn many researchers‟ attention. This dissertation will focus on how the cross-cultural environments influence the choice of marketing strategies.

The theoretical framework of this study mainly contains cross-culture theories and 4P marketing strategy. These theories are put together in an analytical model where a connection between the two theories is explained that will be used as a foundation in gathering and analyzing the empirical findings.

The qualitative research strategy is employed in this dissertation. Utilizing the multiple case studies, we choose two sample companies both from USA. The empirical data was gathered through semi-structured interviews on the telephone. Data was also supplemented with secondary data such as company web pages and scientific articles.

The conclusion can be drawn from this study is that culture differences influence the 4P marketing strategies in both of the companies in different ways. Language, value and customer behaviors of a national culture are main factors to affect the implementation of marketing strategy in the international markets.

Successful Entry Strategies on the Chinese Market: -A Case Study of a Swedish Industrial Company: SKF2013Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, the Chinese market is attracting more and more attention from foreign countries, which consider China as a potential partner. Making feasible decisions is the foundation of accessing success in the Chinese markets. Thus, it is important to take the first step as choosing the entry strategies, and then analyzing the variety of social environment and economic circumstance. According to different situations, companies are required to prepare alternative strategies for the changeable markets.

This is a case study of a Swedish industrial company- SKF, which entered into the Chinese market successfully. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategies that SKF used during the process of entering the Chinese market, and find out the successful factors as well as the cause of failure. Our case study is aimed to provide an answer to the research questions and generate imitable entry strategies for western industrial companies who want to explore in the Chinese market.

Our research questions are: Q1: What strategies have adopted by SKF and how these strategies worked out to enter into the Chinese market? Q2: What are the successful factors of industrial companies to enter the Chinese market?

Two experienced product managers are invited to be the interviewee of our thesis. The collected data provided both Swedish and Chinese perspectives, which reflect the eastern western culture differences and concept differences.

The results show that SKF made the acquaintance with big customers through distributors, which built up the customers’ network and company’s foundation at the early age of the expansion. However, failing experience of joint venture gave a lesson to SKF and encouraged SKF to work with independent consultant firms, which occurred to be an alternative solution to replace the position of joint venture. Although there are different perspectives from Swedish side and Chinese side, the successful factors have been concluded as unique products, marketing demands, communication and customers.

The implication of this case study is to provide the strategies that contribute SKF to be the leaders in bearing industry, which is worth to be learned and imitated by other similar industrial companies.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background and problem: It is only in recent years that e-commerce of groceries has gained momentum. Between 2014 and 2016, the annual increase in digital food sales was approximately 30% and it is expected to increase sharply in the future. In an article from Svenska Dagbladet, it is found that food giants are making millions of e-commerce losses, but in spite of that, they strive to sell food online.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe and explain how companies in the grocery trade are working to secure growth as a result of the e-commerce development of groceries.

Method: The method is based on a qualitative approach with semistructured interviews as the basis for the primary data collection. The sample of interviewees comprised five respondents from various grocery stores in Halland and Northern Skåne, all offering e-commerce as analternative to the physical store.

Theory: The theoretical reference framework on which the analysis is based consist of competition strategies, integration of different sales channels and customer loyalty.

Conclusion: Through the study, we have come to the conclusion that the stores work in asimilar way to ensure future growth. What distinguishes them and which probably affects the degree of e-commerce growth is how well the stores prepared for the implementation of ecommerce in the form of offering a smooth solution for the customer, and how they then work with the range and pick-up efficiency.

ORGANIZATIONAL MEMORY SYSTEMS AS A SOURCE OF LEARNING FOR NEW EMPLOYEES IN AN INNOVATIVE CONTEXT2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Organizational memory is said to be one of the essential factors of organizational learning, particularly in a part that is concerned with knowledge flowing from an organization to its employees. Often viewed as a system of knowledge repositories, organizational memory is argued to be important in various contexts. The purpose of this study is to explore an impact of the organizational memory in two such contexts, namely in a situation of presence of new employees and organization involved in innovation activity. The importance of organizational memory for the new employees can be explained by the fact that it is through facing it they socialize in the organization. Organizational memory also influences innovative behaviour of employees.

This researched is performed in a form of a case study; where the object of study finds itself in a combined context – new employees of R&D department learn from different organizational memory systems. The data for this case study were collected through qualitative interviewing of both the newcomers and their supervisor.

The results show that new employees face a range of memory systems, and this range does not depend on the innovativeness of the work they are involved in. It was found possible to look separately into the systems and methods the newcomers accessed them. The most important access methods in this case turned out to be personal communication and IT-enabled means, however a number of other methods were also found relevant for the case.

Focusing on how this knowledge can support innovative behaviour of the new employees, this study has found several ways in which both incremental and radical innovations can be enhanced. The memory systems have been found to affect innovative behaviour of the newcomers by demonstrating expectance of this behaviour, by providing “old” knowledge, as well as hints where one can possibly find “old” and “new” knowledge.

In general, the findings suggest that looking into memory systems separately from the ways to access them might give valuable insights for rethinking how properties of the memory systems have been defined so far.

    Abstract [sv]

    Handledare:                       Klaus Solberg Soilen

    Examinator:                      Ulf Aagerup

Empiri:                              Affärsmodellen gratis har delats in i fyra underkategorier.

The Role of Arts in Nordic Society: Health and Lifestyle2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The role of arts in both formal and non-formal education has been scientifically demonstrated to create positive outcomes in people to deal with all kinds of social problems in daily life. At present, there are international public and private institutions that support this view, such as the International Arts Education Week, celebrated for the first time by UNESCO on 21-27 May 2012 when not only artists participated, but also educators, researchers, NGO actors, and international associations. This provides us with a wider perspective on how arts and education can play an interdisciplinary role in society.

The aim of this research is to study how arts (e.g., performative arts, literature, film) interact with and affect Nordic society; the kind of practices, contributions and challenges that exist within the cultural and educational sectors (based on three case studies) and their relationship between the government in the form of cultural policies in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in support of the well-being of the Nordic lifestyle whenever applying a wider perspective to the role of the arts in society.

This qualitative study is composed of three case studies, which explore the role of arts in three Nordic institutions (two public ones and a private one): 1) The Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland; 2) Skissernas Museum - Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art in Lund, Sweden; and 3) Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humbaelek, Denmark. The empirical material collected has been done through the usage of the hermeneutics—texts, semi-structured interviews of professionals (two art educators with multidisciplinary backgrounds, two art historians, and a museum guide), publications, catalogues, and active participation in cultural/educational activities in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The data collected is analyzed within the framework of the reflexive methodology. “The Theory of Communicative Action” by Jürgen Habermas aims to understand the multidisciplinary relationship among the artistic/educational institutions, society, and government as support for the well-being and sustainability of Nordic society.

The results will reveal a multidisciplinary application of the arts as support to Nordic welfare, healthand lifestyle. The results will also show how arts can be included in people’s lifestyles in an organic manner, being a benefit for the well-being of the society and supporting the sustainability of Nordic welfare when people have a wider understanding of the application of the arts in their lives, for instance, through literature, concerts, performances, but also, attending to festivals, arts and crafts activities, gardens, parks, and even experiencing architecture.

    Abstract [sv]

Does board independence influence financial performance in IPO firms?: The moderating role of the national business system2017Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print), ISSN 1090-9516, E-ISSN 1878-5573, Vol. 52, nr 5, s. 628-639Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Prior evidence suggests that board independence may enhance financial performance, but this relationship has been tested almost exclusively for Anglo-American countries. To explore the boundary conditions of this prominent governance mechanism, we examine the impact of the formal and information institutions of 18 national business systems on the board independence-financial performance relationship. Our results show that while the direct effect of independence is weak, national-level institutions significantly moderate the independence-performance relationship. Our findings suggest that the efficacy of board structures is likely to be contingent on the specific national context, but the type of legal system is insignificant. © 2017 Elsevier Inc.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain insight into how two enterprises work with competence development and thereby study how the relationship between competence development and workers, employees, look like. The focus was on the workers motives and motivation towards a participation in a competence development course, their attitude to education, and how the transfer of skills gained from the course, into the workplace looks like. Further on, the work situations influence on the workers competence development has been taken into account.

In the study, six people were interviewed in the role of either manager, coach or course participant who are employed in two different enterprises in the south of Sweden.

The results showed that the participants were motivated by a strive for personal development or that the participants viewed education implementation as a part of the professional

career, which has resulted in a positive attitude towards the competence development course. The managers’ motive for decisions about education was to change the prevailing attitude among the staff for the better and thereby strengthen the company’s brand.

The work situation has encouraged the desire to participate in developmental education as the feeling of control has encouraged the workers to further development. However, their already high work demands seemed to serve as a stressor, as the education participation increased the work load. Finally a difference is seen in both companies after completing the education, which indicates a successful transfer and application of the knowledge.

    Abstract [sv]

To design security: A quantitative study of high school students security in the physical school environment2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (yrkesexamen), 300 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

High school students' schooling is preparing for their future. It is therefore important that their school time is characterized by security and a good physical school environment. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the physical school environment outside the classroom affects the safety of high school students. The aim of the study is also to highlight a possible connection between how the design of various places in the school affects the safety of the students, connected to where the students mostly stay during the school day. Previous science and background facts about safety in the physical school environment emphasize how important it is with the school's design. There are numbers of relevant factors to consider when designing a school and how to promote security in the physical school environment. To be able to answer the issues of the thesis, quantitative surveys have been sent out to high schools students at a secondary school. Through bar charts, the result is presented and then analyzed based on the method bivariate analysis. The theoretical framework of the thesis consists of Simmel's sociological theory and the spatial theory perspective. The results of the study are analyzed on the basis of the theory perspective and compared with previous science and other background facts. The results of this study shows that students are safest in the dining room, the library and in the places where they mostly stay daily. The factors that contribute to security are mainly that people they feel safe with are there, open spaces and comfortable sound levels.

A Comparative Case Study on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) between SMEs and MNCs2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the behaviors that multinational corporations(MNCs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are taking for carrying outcorporate social responsibility (CSR) under the context of sustainable development.Besides, the factors which drive and influence the performance are further exploredand discussed. The thesis is to be analyzed by means of a literature review, qualitative case study,semi-structured interviews, within case study and cross case study.By adopting these methods, the thesis shows that both MNCs and SMEs are aware ofand actively shouldering CSR in spite of different contents and approaches. MNCs areable to integrate economic, environment and social values into CSR strategy whileSMEs focus more on economic values. Competitive pressures, social expectations andinternal governance system are the main drivers of MNCs. By contrast, owners’ desiregives rise to the performance of carrying out CSR strategy by SMEs.It is suggested that a new domain of CSR namely, political social responsibility isfound through the study. It demonstrates that MNCs with the state-owned nature haveparticular missions and responsibilities to serve the country and society, which is notcommon but exists in the world.

    Abstract [sv]

Titel: K2 eller K3 : Motiv till att redovisa enligt K3

Författare: Adrian Zhubi och Albert Zhubi

    Färdigställt: Våren 2016

    Handledare: Eva Berggren

How does leadership develop contextual ambidexterity in project – basedorganizations?2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Statistics show that a large number of companies struggle for their survival.About 20 % of the EU companies in all the different industries that were born in 2015 couldnot survive till 2016. More specifically, only less than half of the companies that were born in2011 are still active in 2016 (Eurostat, 2018). Moreover, corporate bankruptcies in Swedenincreased by 20 % in the years 2017 to 2018 compared to 2016 (Tillvaxtanalys, 2019 ).Therefore, the main challenge for managers is to consolidate short-term and long-termthinking, encourage visions while remaining focused on execution within employees.

Problem background: While the current literature acknowledges both the importance oforganizational ambidexterity for companies’ survival, and the role played by managers todevelop ambidexterity, research on how to achieve such ambidexterity is still narrow. Moreover, the influence of the different leadership styles on contextual ambidexterity and itseffects on individuals have hardly been attended in the literature.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to develop an understanding on how leaders, throughambidextrous leadership styles, create a context that enables individuals to achieve contextualambidexterity. More specifically, this master’s thesis aims to define a conceptual frameworkthat shows the influence of the leadership styles on contextual ambidexterity

Methodology: In order to answer our research question, a qualitative research was conductedwith a deductive approach. Eight Interviews, four managers and four employees, wereconducted in four project-based organizations within the software industry in Sweden.

Findings: The key findings are that transformational leadership style was found to foster “trustand support” in social support, and “stretch” in performance management, while thetransactional leadership style was only found in discipline in the organizational context.

Conclusions: This study shows how developing adaptability in an organization requiresmanagers to apply transformational leadership style to the social support dimensions of theorganizational context. On the other hand, developing alignment in an organization requiresmanagers to apply both transformation and transactional styles rather than transactional. Mangers also need to balance the intensity of their leadership styles as both styles need to be emphasized equally well.

Going in Dialysis is Time to Live: Family’s Experiences of Everyday Life with Haemodialysis Treatment2010Ingår i: Proceedings of the Sustaining Everyday Life Conference: April 22–24 2009, Campus Norrköping, Sweden / [ed] Kristina Karlsson and Kajsa Ellergård, Linköping: Linköping University , 2010, s. 123-133Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Time is a central concept when attempting to capture how life develops as results of the interaction between the individual and those in his/her immediate environment. Chronic renal disease such as ESRD with chronic haemodialysis not only shortens life but also places everyday life on a thin line survival paramount. The haemodialysis is also a time-consuming treatment that makes it necessary to carefully plan of everyday life and involves next of kin to a large degree. The aim of this study was to explore the content of time in everyday life as experienced by the next of kin of haemodialysis patients. This study used explorative and descriptive design with a content analysis approach. The interviews, which were conducted in the informants’ homes, lasted 20-60 minutes and were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim in order to not to lose any information. Twenty next of kin were selected purposive with the criterion of having at least one year of experience as a next of kin of a patient on haemodialysis. The content of time in everyday life can be described as follows: fragmented time, vacuous time and uninterrupted time. Conclusion which illustrate how time is minimised and life space contracted for next of kin and their family. They were aware of the prognosis of renal disease and the fact that haemodialysis is life-sustaining treatment, which forced them to live for the moment. It is important to gain insight into how time influences the next of kin’s experiences of everyday life and how this knowledge can be communicated in the nursing science.

Journal club - a forum of discussion for scientific dialectics2010Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 5, nr 2, s. 4652-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In the sometimes hectic routines of daily academic work, it can be difficult to find opportunities for naturally creative encounters with our colleagues, where we can jointly focus methodological issues in research. Where do we find the time and place for constructive discussions on published research? And how can we foster such meetings?

As a senior lecturer and researcher, I have a strong interest in research seminars in the field of clinical activity, as well as long-standing experience of coordinating and leading such seminars. I also gained extensive knowledge of seminar dynamics from my doctoral studies at the University of Linköping.

Over the years, I have developed a particular way of working with seminars, aiming to contribute to the establishment of interdisciplinary research groups at the School of Health and Social Science, at Halmstad University. One of my ideas was to take advantage of the privileged position of our university, and the fact that it hosts a scientific journal and its Editor-in-Chief, Professor Lillemor Hallberg. This is why I started the Journal Club in 2006—the same year that the International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being was launched.

Initially, I simply sent an invitation to my fellow researchers at the School of Health and Social Science, explaining the purpose of the meetings. The idea was to use the Journal Club to discuss selected articles from the International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, and critically examine them.

It is essential that the articles are distributed to participants well in advance, and that participants have had time to read the contents, so they are prepared to critically examine the aims, methods and results of the discussed articles.

My vision with the meetings at the Journal Club was to give added impetus to scientific dialectics at the School, to develop a critical approach and deepen methodological understanding. We need a continuous reflection concerning qualitative research approaches and various standpoints with respect to research ethics, in order to increase methodological awareness in our research. In this way, the monthly seminars contribute to developing our competencies as researchers, as well as keeping our knowledge up-to-date.

Another aim of the Journal Club is to be a discussion forum for interdisciplinary research issues, relating to health, life-styles, well-being and the quality of life. Uniting a critical mass at our school, and bringing about an engaging discussion, allows us to test our ideas in a stimulating dialogue with colleagues. It also provides an opportunity to widen and deepen our understanding of current issues.

The Journal Club has met since the autumn term 2006, always on the same day of the week, at the same time and place, at the School of Health and Social Science. The objective is to give these encounters a “club feeling”, and to shape a tradition of a recurrent event at the School. Before each seminar at the Journal Club, an invitation is sent to all teaching and research staff at the School.

The availability of the most recent articles from the International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, combined with the Editor-in-Chief's contribution to the seminars, gives the meetings an additional dimension, and strengthens the impact that the Journal Club has at Halmstad University. The role of the Club is also strengthened by the important position that the International Journal of Qualitative Studies occupies on our own nursing programmes, both at junior and senior levels. The articles are widely used and discussed on our Nursing science and Methods courses.

    Maintaining families´well-being in everyday life2011Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 6, nr 2, s. 7206-7211Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to discuss how everyday life changes for the family in the event of chronic illness or disability. It changes physically due to loss of body function and socially due to time and other constraints related to treatment or lack of mobility. Equally important, there is a psychological impact due to the uncertainty of the future. The article will explore how family participation can help to maintain well-being in everyday life. The family should therefore focus on their own needs as much as on the needs of the family members who are ill. In order to maintain well-being in everyday life, it is crucial for the family to create routines and spend time doing things that they enjoy. By doing this, the family will create a rhythm of well-being regardless of the critical family situation. Family members and professional caregivers also need to come together at the beginning and during the illness or disability event to discuss changes that could be made day-to-day for all those involved, thereby making for an easier transition into care giving.

    Abstract [en]

A trend today is to disseminate information fast and make it available for everyone. In municipalities the implementation and use of intranets as a communication channel for the dissemination of information is growing. All employees in municipalities are not working in an office and have limited access to the technology; they can not visit the intranet every day. This paper presents a study of how available communication channels are used to disseminate information to employees in municipalities. The results are presented as guidelines promoting the use of intranet as a communication channel and design of further research is presented. © The authors, except as noted.

Coteaching in ”music-drama”: An arena for joint creative learning2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In an aesthetic methods course within teacher education, teachers and students experienced that the different aesthetic subjects and the teachers were separated from one another. In order to improve subject collaboration and joint professional reflection in action, a coteaching project in “music-drama” was initiated. The aim of the project was to investigate how three aesthetic teachers in teacher education engaged in a coteaching project concerning music and drama and to explore the potential of coteaching in addressing the issue of providing a more integrated approach to teacher learning.. The project was designed in three phases; coplanning, coteaching and coevaluation (Murphy & Scantlebury, 2010). The aim of the study was to analyse how a music teacher and two drama teachers reflected in action in a coteaching project. The theoretical framework is sociocultural, where aspects of learning from ´the other´ in praxis by working in a ZPD is of special interest. Empirical material consists of classroom reflections in action, focus group conversations and students´ written reflections. Preliminary findings show three prominent patterns in the empirical material: • creativity as a problem solver, • synergies in subjects parallels • differences as resources for joint learning. Coteaching provided an arena for joint creative intutitive learning where trust among the teachers enabled them to work in their ZPD, a process that acquired courage and self-confidence. In conclusion, the teachers´ reflections in action appeared as expressions of being in their zone of proximal development, where courage and trust were crucial in order to engage in mutual professional learning.

Inclusion functioning as exclusion: new students entering the Academy of Music in Sweden2015Ingår i: Teachers and Teaching: theory and practice, ISSN 1354-0602, E-ISSN 1470-1278, Vol. 21, nr 3, s. 277-288Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents findings from a pioneer study addressing the first co-action between students with intellectual disabilities and an Academy of Music in Sweden. The aim of the article is to study and discuss subject positions that are constructed in rhythmic lessons related to a gathering where students with intellectual disabilities interact with a group of Master of Education in Music students at an Academy of Music, and also to describe how constructions of identity are manifested in the interaction between the actors. With poststructuralist and social constructionist theories as theoretical framework, video observations were conducted to enable an overarching view of the pedagogic practice. The findings reveal that the gathering between the groups becomes an expression of inclusion functioning as exclusion, since the teacher’s position the students with intellectual disabilities in ways that obstruct equal interaction with the other student group. Finally, implications of the findings are discussed in addition to inclusion as an ideal model in educational settings.

    Abstract [en]

The way in which music teachers choose and use the subject content in ensemble and music theory in the upper secondary school is focused in this study. The point of interest is the everyday classroom teaching of music teachers. The intentions that music teachers have with their teaching is also studied.

This thesis is a study of music teaching and is a subject-didactic investigation, inspired by variation theory. The overarching aim of the thesis is to study how music teachers in upper secondary school choose teaching content when teaching ensemble and music theory. The teachers’ use of the teaching content implies that they choose to focus and teach certain parts in their teaching. This choice of con- tent and how it is used is in focus in this study. The research questions are: How do music teachers choose teaching content when teaching ensemble and music theory in upper secondary school? How do music teachers use the teaching con- tent in their teaching?

The data collection includes video-documented lessons and qualitative inter- views with five music teachers in upper secondary school in 2004.

The analysis reveals two different choices of content. When the teachers have music and theory as the content of their teaching, it is the content that guides the teaching methods, where the teacher uses a fixed content, which is then presented in different ways; this was mainly in music theory. When the content is music activities, the music teachers adjust the activity-based content in accordance with the level of the pupils’ skills in ensemble. The differences that occur in the varia- tion theory results are closely related to the teaching content. The foundations of the two different choices of content that are made by the music teachers, as well as the significance of the learning objects, are finally discussed.

Practical and Theoretical Knowledge in Contrast: Teacher Educators´ Discursive Positions2017Ingår i: Australian Journal of Teacher Education, ISSN 1835-517X, Vol. 42, nr 8, s. 29-42Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Higher education in general and teacher education in particular have been subjected to significant changes. As there are few studies examining how actors rhetorically position themselves within this context, the ambition of the paper is to study conversations between teacher educators related to norms and values in education. The aim of the paper is to study interpretative repertoires and subject positions that are constructed in conversations between teacher educators and to discuss these in relation to qualities in teacher education. The theoretical framework emanates from post-structuralist and social constructionist theories. The empirical material consists of group conversations with teacher educators. The findings reveal that the practical and theoretical appear to be in contrast, which in turn seem to affect education quality. Finally, implications of the findings are discussed, where a future diagonal diverse discourse, combining theoretical and practical knowledge, is argued for.

Why using a digital learning platform?: Teacher and school leader conversations about digital devices in teaching2018Ingår i: ICERI2018 Proceedings / [ed] L. Gómez Chova, A. López Martínez & I. Candel Torres, Seville: The International Academy of Technology, Education and Development, 2018, s. 9372-9376Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

At present, digital technologies are implemented in school and as such, influence teachers´ practices in different ways. Digital resources could involve a reconsideration of the concept of learning in educational contexts, as well as a change in teachers´ roles and practices in the classroom. In an implementation process, different agendas and arguments could be in conflict. This is in great need of further studying, enabling a more complex discussion, giving emphasis to varying arguments concerning digital resources in school. Based on these considerations, this study focuses on a secondary school, where the municipality has decided to implement a software related to a digital learning platform for different teaching subjects. For the specific software, the software company needs to approve teachers´ design before allowing them to accomplish their teaching. In this way, it might be assumed that the software company governs the teachers´ in a way that could have consequences for their possibilities to implement their professional knowledge into their teaching practice. The aim of this paper is to study dialogues between principal and teachers related to the implementation of a digital platform in teaching, and further to discuss in what way this digital platform influences on teachers´ teaching practices. The empirical material consists of group conversations during staff meetings between principal and teachers. The theoretical framework emanates from social constructionist and poststructuralist theory, with discursive psychology and discourse theory as methodological approach. Findings reveal several aspects in the conversations, presented as different interpretative repertoires. From a principal perspective, the repertoire of persuasion is characterized by stressing positive aspects of the learning platform, regardless of subject. The principal is positioning himself as knowledgeable of the digital platform on a general level. From a teacher perspective, two repertoires appear. The repertoire of promoting is characterized by emphasizing the digital platform as user friendly for the students, while the repertoire of resistance implies questioning the adequacy of the platform related to subject matter content and student learning. The former implies that the teachers are positioning themselves as supporters of the digital platform whereas the latter means teachers positioning themselves as disputing the adequacy of the platform related to student needs. Concludingly, according to the repertoire of persuasion and the repertoire of promoting, student learning and student needs related to a specific subject matter content is considered as less important, than implementing the digital platform per se. From an educational perspective, several problematic aspects on teaching quality as well as on teacher agency appear. These aspects, as well as implications for secondary school settings, are finally discussed in addition to digital technologies as an influential tendency.

    Abstract [en]

This article is based on a larger research project where the overall ambition is to critically discuss the encounter between students with intellectual disabilities and the Academy of Music. The aim of the article is to study the subject positions that are offered to the students, and how identity is constructed in interaction between the participants in teaching situations. The aim is also to describe the knowledge formation in a broad sense. The theoretical points of departure are the poststructuralist and the social constructionist theories, where the subject is considered as an agent that constructs reality in social interaction, but also as restricted by prevailing discourses. Discourse analysis is being used, with the aid of analytic tools developed within discursive psychology. Two different promi- nent discourses in rhythmics are identified: the protective therapeutic discourse, and the reproductive musical discourse. As a final conclusion, subject positions as well as knowledge formations contained in these discourses are discussed.

    The silenced discourse2012Ingår i: NORDISCO 2012, Book of Abstracts, 2012, s. 77-77Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, based on a larger research project, the ambition is to problematize the first appointment between persons with intellectual disabilities and Swedish Higher Music Education. The aim of the study is to investigate subject positions that are constructed in eurhythmics related to the appointment between a group of students with intellectual disabilities and a group of student teachers, and to study how identity is constructed in interaction between the actors. Also, the aim is to describe the knowledge formation that is materialized. The theoretical framework is built on post-structuralist and social constructionist theory. Discursive psychology has been useful in the micro analysis of the situations in the classroom. A Foucault inspired analysis has contributed with an overarching view on the concept of discourse as well as a point of departure to reveal the silent discourse. Finally, Discourse theory as it is formulated by Laclau and Mouffe is suitable for discussing different available subject positions and a so called overdetermined identity. Inspired by an ethnografic approach, video observations were made for an extended period of one term in order to develop an understanding of the culture constructed in the practice. The results show that the silenced discourse, the unspeakable, is constructed from the fact that the students with intellectual disabilities both are insufficiently skilled for the task as leaders in eurhythmics, and less skilled than the student teachers. When the teachers feel awkwardness spreading among the visiting students, they use verbal and bodily strategies trying to cover up the fact that the disabled students do not possess adequate skills. Finally, the silenced discourse is discussed in addition to a hegemonic discourse in the Swedish politics of education.
