Landscape management on the basis of local perspectives and resources2004In: : "One Earth - Many Worlds": 30th Internation Geographical Congress, Glasgow 2004, 2004Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the farmed land in Sweden we find seminatural grassland, which is among the most species- rich landscapes. Farmers play a crucial role in landscape for preserving and enhancing biodiversity, since these lands are results from the interaction between farmer and nature. This poses a challenge to form policy measures that pay attention both to qualities in the physical landscape and to the inhabitants. Consequently, local perspectives and recourses are central points of departure in planning for their future management.

The poster presents implications for policy strategies on the basis of research on local views and capacities. Group interviews and action research have been carried out in two different areas in Western Sweden.

The findings show several difficulties in the interaction between the administrative system and local actors, due to differences in landscape perspectives. Strategies, which mainly are based on an ecological view, get into conflict with farmers practical understanding of the landscape they cultivate. Furthermore, rural people have the capacity to seek their own solutions, and local knowledge as well as social capital are essential resources. One conclusion is that future landscape policies ought to contain less detailed regulations, and instead promote awareness and local responsibility.

Marknadsföring av hållbar turism i Sverige: en empirisk analys2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During recent decades, opinions about how nature should be protected by the public sector have changed. One result is a better awareness of the important role that local actors play in the preservation of valuable areas. The overall aim of the thesis is to increase the understanding of preconditions for bottom-up approaches within nature conservation planning of cultural landscape. The research issues touch upon: (1) the significance of strategies which are based upon the landscape perspective and the capacities of local actors, (2) the capability of participatory processes and (3) the abilities of decision makers to promote a planning system which is better adapted to the local level.

The theoretical framework describes bottom-up approaches on the basis of research concerning participation, democracy, planning, rural development and landscape. It is concluded that local participation is complex within representative democracy, but is advocated in the interactive planning theory which deals with communicative rationality and social learning. It has also an important position in research of local mobilisation where the assumption is that planning processes should be carried out upon the initiative of those concerned.

The research has made use of a diverse methodology. Interactive- and action-oriented research has complemented questionnaires and interviews. The investigations focused primarily on the municipalities of Orust and Munkedal in Western Sweden but other areas were also involved. Both local actors and managers within the public sectors took part.

The results show that bottom-up approaches imply an emphasis upon the specific landscape which humans experience with all their senses and transform through daily actions. It also refers to efforts which are formulated on the basis of insights into the specific community and the context in which landscape values exist. The major driving forces are social capital, entrepreneurship, commitment and the capacity to represent public interests. Participatory processes may contribute to the preservation of aesthetic, heritage, biological and recreation values in the landscape on the bases of local conditions. The study further indicates that it is possible to incorporate bottom-up approaches into the planning system if the normative preconditions exist, i.e. societal support for a larger degree of decentralized work and participatory processes. Comprehensive structural changes, as well as practical efforts, are thus needed to expand social interaction between the authorities and local actors.

Vad påverkar trafiksäkerhet?2015In: Plan : planering av stad & land, ISSN 0032-0560, no 5, p. 40-45Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The presentation transfers theories and previous research on local participation in community development to the university sector. It expands upon the motives, hindrances and methods of participation in the university sector, and the opportunities participation provides for social and collaborative learning. Results indicate that social and collaborative learning processes integrate not only scientific or professional knowledge, but also different types of place-, relation- and process-related capabilities. Capabilities related to place include a knowledge that is linked to a specific society and shared among most residents there. It includes insights into the distinguishing characteristics of the culture, society and the business sector. Capabilities related to relation (otherwise referred to as social capital) include trust, cooperation and reciprocity. Capabilities related to processes include those that emerge when a group is undertaking a progressive work, such as social and collaborative learning.

    Abstract [en]

There is a tendency to view teachers´ assessment literacy from a deficit perspective, and teachers existing practices are rarely used as a source of knowledge about assessment. Instead of treating teachers as being to some extent experts on assessment, the domain of assessment literacy is primarily represented by viewing researchers as “experts”. In this study teachers´ assessment literacy is approached from an asset perspective. The knowledge and skills that teachers possess can contribute to the description and understanding of classroom assessment literacy.

The overall aim of the study is to develop knowledge about teachers’ classroom assessment literacy. Studying teachers' collective reflections about assessment, in relation to video-recorded teaching situations, is used to approach the question of what classroom assessment and assessment literacy actually mean. Three primary schools and eleven teachers, heterogeneous regarding age, sex, education and experience, are involved in the study.

The results indicate three themes to describe teachers´ classroom assessment literacy: focus on the intention of assessment, focus on the enactment of assessment and focus on the conclusion of assessment. The study shows that teachers have the competence to conduct and use assessment as an integral part of teaching. An overall conclusion is that assessment literate teachers invite students to share power and responsibility in assessment processes. The three themes can be seen as a process of developing, implementing and using assessments, which requires a holistic approach to learning, teaching and assessment.

    Abstract [sv]

2. Fokus på bedömningens realisation. 3. Fokus på bedömningens konklusion.

Teachers´ assessment practice: A study of the relationship between teaching and assessment2013In: The 41st Annual Congress of the Nordic Educational Research Association: Disruptions and eruptions as opportunities for transforming education: Abstract book, 2013, p. 178-178Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The study's overall aim is to develop knowledge about teachers assessment practice. Studying teachers' collective reflections on videotaped teaching situations in order to see what and how they choose to reflect on teaching / assessment may be one way to approach the overall question about what assessment actually is, specifically in relation to the communication and feedback as part of any (reasonable) teaching. In light of the research project's overall aim, the study is guided by the following question:

    • How is assessment represented in teachers reflections about teaching?

    Methodology/research design

Three schools are involved in the study and at each school one teacher is videotaped on three different occasions. In the beginning-, in the middle- and in the final stage of a work area. After each occasion a video-stimulated reflection session (VSR) takes place with the teacher, his or her collegues and the researcher. The theoretical framework is inspired by pragmatic and sociocultural perspectives. The study´s point of departure is the schoolpractice and elaborate teachers learning through the experiences and reflective conversations which lead to new issues and new actions. When teachers reflect together over videotaped teaching sequences the study´s design provide conditions for a close relationship between reflection and action. Furthermore the study relates to sociocultural epistemology, seeing learning and knowing as social, distributed, situated in a context, and mediated by cultural artifacts.

    Findings and expected findings

How assessment as teaching and teaching as assessment can be described is a preliminary finding in the study. A non-dichotomous relation between teaching and assessment and between summative and formative assessment can be discussed using the following concepts in a teaching-assessment process: communication regarding knowledge expressions, summative evaluation, feedback, formative use and assessment of learning. The model is tentative and represents a work in progress.

Pedagogernas högläsning: En fenomenografisk studie om pedagogers uppfattningar om högläsning2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Business on the Border of Breakdown: An Interdisciplinary Study of Entrepreneurs inKabul, Afghanistan2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Afghanistan has experienced a civil war since the last three decades that has causedenormous damages to infrastructure and incredible human suffering. Insecurity is not only fromterrorists, many Afghans rank political gridlock and deeply rooted corruption as worse. A modelby Bullough et al. provides risk perception, resilience and self-efficacy as determinants forentrepreneurial intentions. The study aggregates resilience and self-efficacy into a psychologicalperspective that, together with a non-monolithic perspective on risk, generates a new model offorces. Vectors illustrate how these forces can balance each other out. The result is a useful modelto detail entrepreneurship under the adverse conditions in Kabul, where entrepreneurs experiencekidnapping as their primary personal risk while administrative threats related to corruption, informality and poor governance are seen to carry an almost equal amount of risk.

Cooperation between gatekeepers in sickness insurance - the perspective of social insurance officers: A qualitative study2008In: BMC Health Services Research, ISSN 1472-6963, E-ISSN 1472-6963, Vol. 8, no 231, p. 1-7Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    BACKGROUND:

Objective was to describe variations in how social insurance officers conceive the cooperation with the health care in their daily work with sick leave.

    METHODS:

Fifteen social insurance officers (SIOs) working with administration of sickness benefits were interviewed. They were purposefully recruited to represent different parts of the social insurance office organization, different ages, gender, education, and work experience. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using phenomenographic approach.

    RESULTS:

11 women and 4 men, aged 25-65, with a work experience ranging from 1-40 years were interviewed. Three descriptive categories embracing eleven subcategories emerged: 1) Communication channels included three subcategories; to obtain medical opinions, to hold meetings with actors involved, to experience support functions; 2) Organizational conditions included five subcategories; to experience lack of time, to experience problems of availability, to experience lack of continuity, to experience unclear responsibility, to experience ongoing change; 3) Attitudes included three subcategories; to conceive the attitudes of the physicians, to conceive the attitudes of the patients, to conceive the attitudes of the SIOs.

    CONCLUSION:

Personal communication was described as crucial to ensure a more efficient working process. The personal contact was obstructed mainly by issues related to work load, lack of continuity, and reorganisations. By enhancing and enabling personal contact between SIOs and health care professionals, the waiting times for the sick-listed might be shortened, resulting in shorter periods of sick-leave. Issues around collaboration and communication between gatekeepers need to be recognized in the ongoing work with new guidelines and education in insurance medicine.

Att vara ung och anställningsbar: En kvalitativ studie om hur arbetslösa ungdomar uppfattas vara anställningsbara ur ett  kommunalt arbetsgivarperspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Youth unemployment in relation to overall unemployment is high and is one of the Swedish government´s priorities in labour market policy. The purpose of this study is to investigate what idea the municipal employers have of unemployed youths ́ employability. The purpose is embodied by three questions, designed to see what importance of participation in active labour market programs, upper secondary school diploma and personality have on employability. The study is based on a qualitative research approach and answers the purpose with eight municipal employers' perceptions of unemployed young people's employability. The result indicates that employability, according to the municipal employers, is the importance of experience, skills and education. The results also indicate that the internship in a municipal labour market program, which aims to provide work experience, cannot be equated with each other. Participation in a municipal labor market program could reduce employability, as well as the lack of an upper secondary school diploma reduces the chance of an employment. The personality of an individual that is considered crucial for employment does not meet the requirements of the essential employability.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to gain increased knowledge about how social advisers who work for Ungbo in Halmstad perceive their capabilities to meet the needs of young people receiving assistance from the business and how they interpret their mission. Ungbo is a housing support for young people / young adults who are in need of accommodation and support to varying degrees. The study is qualitative and data collection has been done through interviews of the social advisor who works for Ungbo in Halmstad. The study shows that social advisers have similar views regarding the goals but in terms of approach to the common target different views about. The social adviser’s perceptions of their ability to meet the needs of young people are varied although the majority highlights the lack of a working model or explicit directive to work after indicating that they feel their freedom of action as excessive. The boundaries are blurred, but nevertheless feel the freedom in their work as positive. All of Social Advisers also complain that business is not in line with social development and the concept of Ungbo should be reviewed to catch up with society

Vad förklarar mindre företags val av att frivilligt redovisa enligt K2-regelverket?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The K2-framework for smaller companies came out in 2008 as a voluntary alternative to the previous regulations BFN/RR. The reason for the development of the K2-framework was because there was a demand among smaller companies for a simpler and less expensive framework.

Aim: The aim of our study is to examine whether Agent Theory, Positive Accounting Theory and Institutional Theory can explain the characteristics that explain smaller companies choice of voluntarily account according to the K2-framework.

Methodology: We have developed five hypotheses from three existing theories. Our study follows a quantitative approach where information from annual reports from 274 smaller companies, operating in Halland has been collected. The information was then tested statistically by correlation and regression tests to reject or not reject the hypotheses.

Results: Based on Agent Theory, smaller companies tend to account according to the K2-framework. Agent theory also says that it is the companies without mandatory auditing and who chooses not to use an auditor that tends to account according to the K2-framework. The result also says that based on Institutional Theory, the firms with mandatory auditing and who do not have any of the Big 4 agencies increasingly account according to the K2-framework.

Secular Changes in Cognitive Trajectories: A Comparison of Birth Cohorts Followed Between 70 and 79 Years of Age2015In: The Gerontologist, ISSN 0016-9013, E-ISSN 1758-5341, Vol. 55, no Suppl. 2, p. 309-310Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A largely preserved cognition is a prerequisite for everyday-life functioning and wellbeing in old age. In this study we evaluate birth cohort differences as a contextual factor for level and rate of cognitive change from age 70 to 79 based on comparisons of two age-homogenous birth cohorts born 30 years apart (i.e. in 1901-02 and 1930). Data was drawn from the Gerontological and Geriatric Population Studies in Gothenburg, Sweden (H70, N=1176) including three repeated follow-up measures using a similar cognitive battery at each occasion. Our main finding, in line with previous reports is that of a substantial increase in average performance across cognitive measures in favor of the later born cohort. However, the 1930 born cohort also exhibited a tendency toward a steeper average rate of decline. Further evaluation of moderating and mediating effects of birth cohort differences in cognitive functioning will be discussed. © The Author 2015. Lika eller inte, det är frågan...: En studie om controllerns och CFO:ns arbetsuppgifter2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In 2010, small and medium sized enterprises (SME) represented a share of 99,8 percent of all firms in Sweden. For these SMEs, banks are an important source of financing. Because of the significance of the banks, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision created international regulations in 1988, which resulted in a capital adequacy of 8% for banks. The Capital adequacy should cover unforeseen losses in a financial crisis, which make the banking sector to be one of the most regulated industries in the world. In 2006, Basel II was created, which made it difficult to evaluate the credit and risk with SMEs. Basel II created a fear that costs for credit to SMEs would increase, and the worry is still there present, even at the introduction of Basel III, which implies the possibility of weakened credit conditions for SMEs.

The purpose of this thesis is to describe banks’ operation of credit appraisals to SMEs today, analyze and interpret how Basel III may affect banks’ operation of credit appraisals to SMEs, and to understand how Basel III may affect banks’ attitude towards credit appraisals to SMEs, due to increasing capital requirements. To perform this thesis, a quantitative method is used by using a web survey, which was sent to 790 respondents in three of the major national banks in Sweden on condition of anonymity. Of the 790 respondents there were 150 who returned a complete survey response. This gives a response rate of 19%. The result shows that Basel III will fulfill the purpose of creating financial stability in the banking sector but will complicate the ability of SMEs to obtain favorable credit.

    Abstract [en]

This is a social psychology and qualitative research studying what kind of people who become football hooligans and what makes them stay. Football hooliganism became a phenomenon in Sweden society in the 1990s and the community tried to reduce this because hooliganism involves violence and vandalism. The essay is based on ten interviews with people who have been or are active in a hooligan firm in Sweden. The epistemological approach is used as hermeneutics. The collected empirical material is analyzed using the following social psychological theories and concepts: social bonds, shame and pride (Scheff 1994), interaction rituals and emotional energy (Collins, 2004), abnormal behavior (Becker 2005), masculinity theory (Connell 2008), dependency and kicks (Giddens 1992), juvenile stages (Erikson 1988). Based on these theories, we have tried to highlight a social psychological approach of how to understand the reasons of why you join a company and what makes you stay. We concluded that a firm can replace a non satisfied life situation. We also concluded that the group is that important to the individual that it can create a destructive addiction and how much it can influence individuals to act in ways that he had never done alone.

Pedagogers små medel för betydelsefullahögläsningsstunder: Hur pedagoger möjliggör delaktighet ochinteraktion vid högläsning med barn2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Background

According to the Swedish Statistics Central Office (SCB) there were 2 064 000 detached houses in Sweden in 2009. The same year Nordea Bank released a report which described an increased interest in private finances among 2,4 million Swedes. Within the area of private finances lies that which concerns real estate. We argue that a house (detached house) is one of the most financially valuable assets a person will ever own and thus the increased interest in private finance is justified.

In regard to this, the financial valuation of the property becomes an issue. When discussed, people mostly refer to the market value, which is the estimated value of the property on the open market. Further, there is a problem in finding a valuation method which can be used to estimate the market value.

Our interest in the subject of this essay has developed from studies of the real estate market value and the methods commonly used to reach an as a reliable value as possible. What factors influence this value and why do they affect the value the way they do? During the course of these studies it has become evident that the estimation of a property’s market value is a complicated process and to gain a deeper understanding we have chosen this subject for our thesis.

    Purpose

The purpose of this essay is to describe the valuation process upon which the estimate of a property’s theoretical market value is based. Further, the factors upon which this process is based will be investigated.

    Research method

We have chosen to use a qualitative method to achieve the purpose of this essay. The empirical material is exclusively primary data which has been gathered trough personal interviews. The selection of people we have chosen to interview is licensed real estate agents and authorized real estate valuers in Halland.

    Conclusion

All the persons we have interviewed apply the same method and pattern of valuation. The crucial factors in the valuation were the same among all the persons we have interviewed and correspond with the theory we have applied. These factors are location, condition and standard. But above this, the experience of each valuer is what finally decides how reliable the market value of a detached house is.

What a difference a “Mentally Toughening” year makes: The acculturation of a rookie2014In: Psychology of Sport And Exercise, ISSN 1469-0292, E-ISSN 1878-5476, Vol. 17, p. 68-78Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: This study investigated how one subculture's norms, traditions, ideals, and imperatives influenced the attitudes, beliefs, emotions, and behaviours of a young athlete (Joe) as he moved from resistance to acculturation.

Design: Longitudinal case study of one athlete in one specific sport subculture.

Method: Joe took part in five open-ended in-depth interviews over a 14-month period to investigate his experiences as an elite athlete within an Australian football team. Joe's story was analysed through an acculturation-process lens and models on mental toughness, overtraining, and stress-recovery to evaluate the indoctrination of one athlete.

Findings: During the initial interviews Joe resisted the subculture demands of the football club and tried to find success by maintaining his own beliefs. By the end of the 14-month study Joe had realised that to be successful in the club he needed to embrace the norms, traditions, ideals, and imperatives of the football culture. Joe gained acceptance at the club when he eventually internalised the hypermasculine subculture and ignored injury, played in pain, subjugated his interests for football, and viewed physical abuse as a positive and necessary part of the toughening process.

Conclusion: Joe's case study demonstrates that the subcultural ideals of mental toughness mean ignoring injury, playing in pain, denying emotion and vulnerability, and sacrificing individuality, which inevitably lead to stress/recovery imbalance and overtraining. In this subculture, demonstrating mental toughness is similar to a hypermasculine environment typified by slogans such as no-pain-no-gain and rest-is-for-the-dead where success is more important than individual wellbeing. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

A welfare state in transformation – effects on people with intellectual disability in Sweden2016In: Canjiren Yanjiu, ISSN 2095-0810, no 1, p. 4-9Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ideologically propelled by the Normalization Principle the Swedish policy and service system for people with intellectual disability has since the 1960th undergone drastic changes like deinstitutionalization and decentralisation of services to the local municipalities. This paper aims to analyze experiences of the Swedish welfare system and later year’s changes and reforms in respect to people with intellectual disability. Based on a description of different types of welfare models, Swedish policy and laws and the transformation of the welfare system, an analysis and discussion follow based on current research knowledge about major trends in practice and everyday life for people with intellectual disability. Special focus is on the greater variation in support and services, increasing self-advocacy, the impact of 20 years with a right-based law and on the increasing marketization of disability services in relation to quality of services and outcomes for people with intellectual disability.

Decentralisation, variation and categorization – The current state in Sweden2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The responsibility for support, services and education for people with intellectual disability was decentralised to the local authorities in the beginning of the 1990ths. During the main part of the last 20 years the development in Sweden was dominated by economic problems. The new disability legislation 1994, evaluates to have neutralized the deteriorations that the economic /financial problems of society could have brought for the living conditions of people with intellectual disabilities. At the same time the development was denoted by a change from a passably /rather equivalent national situation for people with intellectual disabilities to a greater variation at the local level.

Factors such as organization, economy and political government at the local level, together with an increased stress on the capacity of the individuals to look after their own interests, have resulted in the growth of differences in living situation and living conditions. The local authorities finished the deinstitutionalisation in the beginning of 2002. In addition to that, an increasing political interest of private entrepreneurship in the field of disability and a rise of categorization of children and youth as intellectual disabled has occurred. Categorization has first been noticed in special programmes at school but recently also in daily activities for people of a working age. The rise of categorization can be linked to a change to medical and individualistic based explanation of disability, which has opened up for growth of segregated activities. Examples of resistance against categorization and segregation among young people with intellectual disabilities are noticed. Empowerment by self- organized groups is a new trend.

In conclusion, the development in Sweden can be described as small steps towards normalization as a consequence of deinstitutionalisation along with a greater variation of living conditions due to decentralisation. At the same time an increased categorization has markedly expanded the group which counts as intellectual disabled.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, the normalisation principle has been important behind reforms like deinstitutionalisation and the provision of services within the community for people with intellectual disabilities. The aim of this collection of articles about Swedish disability policy and practice across the life course is to give a research-based examination of the current situation for people with intellectual disabilities. This introductory article gives an overview of the provision of education and support systems for people with intellectual disabilities in Sweden today, and highlights the current trends and challenges faced by these people. The paradox of increasing self-advocacy and at the same time increasing categorisation is discussed, as well as the discrepancies in service provision. Comparisons of similarities in, for example, marketisation between the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme and the Swedish rights-based legislation should be useful for knowledge and development in both countries. © 2015 Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability

    Abstract [sv]

Resistance, identity of resistance and empowerment among people with intellectual disabilities2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim:  The concept of empowerment is often used to describe how individuals or groups try to establish control over their own lives. This study describes how a project “for” participants with intellectual disabilities changed into an empowerment-based project, a change initiated from below by participants who began to investigate how internalised oppression affected their lives and personal identities. Method:  Freire (1972) used the phrase “the wisdom of the oppressed” to emphasise the importance of the “power from within” discriminated and oppressed groups themselves. Through continuous observations and interviews over a three year period with participants and project leaders, we have been able to follow the development of the project.  Results and Conclusion:  Our conclusion is that: project activities are not enough; any real change must come from below and include processes of challenging and changing dominating discourses. We also argue for that an empowerment-based approach would give discriminated participants an opportunity to resist societal labelling as mentally retarded and to define their own personal identity.

    Abstract [en]

Aim: This study aimed to further understand the new forms of self-advocacy in Sweden by describing and analyzing the characteristics and organisation of the movement and its activities and by analyzing the meaning for the members and the influence for identifications, self-determination, relations and daily life.

Method: A national mapping identified more than 60 self-advocacy groups. Case studies of four groups, selected to reflect organisational diversity, were conducted using interviews, focus-groups, observations and document review.

Results: Self -advocacy groups can be everything from totally independent to controlled by parents or staff. Despite this, the self-advocacy groups have an important impact on the lives of their members through the value they experience by achieving independence, self-determination and social connections with each other and outsiders. The most independent groups have also mounted resistance to society´s views and treatments of people with ID and the ways of delivering services.

Conclusions: Self-advocacy-groups in Sweden are important to their members daily life and are slowly beginning to influence attitudes towards people with ID and traditional ways to offer and organise support and service.

Self-advocacy: organization and resistance in Sweden2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: In the last decade, young adults with intellectual disability (ID) have begun to self-organize in order to increase power over their own lives and remove barriers to their social participation in society. This study aimed to further understand the new forms of self-advocacy in Sweden by describing and analyzing 1) the characteristics and organization of the movement and its activities; 2) the influence of membership on self-identity, self-determination, social relationships and daily life; and 3) the influence of the movement on social attitudes and services to people with ID. Method: A national mapping exercise identified more than 60 self- advocacy groups. Case studies of four organizations, selected to reflect organizational diversity, were conducted using interviews, focus-groups, observations and document review. Results: Despite variability in organizational form and size, self-advocacy groups have an important impact on the lives of their members and have mounted resistance to society’s views and treatment of people with ID and the traditional ways of delivering services. Conclusion: The new self-advocacy movement in Sweden is beginning to influence the way Swedish society regards people with ID, and reshape support services to enable greater service user control.
