Fashion Killa: A study on teenager’s attitudes towards luxury fashion clothing brands.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Title: Fashion Killa: A study on teenager’s attitudes towards luxury fashion clothing brands.

Bachelor Thesis 15HP in Business Economics (Marketing) Halmstad University School of Business, Engineering and Science

    Supervisor: Thomas Helgesson

    Examiner: Venilton Reinert

Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to examine the underlying factors that affect teenager’s attitudes towards luxury fashion clothing brands.

Research question: What are the underlying factors that affects the attitudes of teenager ́s towards luxury fashion clothing brands?

Literature review: The literature review introduces the theories and previous findings regarding the underlying factors that can be connected to our research question and explanation on the chosen generations as this study is supposed to relate to.

Frame of reference: In these sections, our main investigation topic will be explained briefly what literatures explain and approach this matter. Our investigation topic “attitudes” have a meaningful role in this paper and it is defined in these sections as well is our choice of model. In the end of this chapter, we present our hypothesis which is based on our chosen model.

Method: Based on the literature review and frame of reference a quantitative study was created where 408 Swedish respondents within the generation Z participated.

Empirical findings: The survey consisted of 25 statements and questions as regard to our theories and could easily be connected to our chosen model. A Likert-scale from 1-5 was used so the respondents easy could fill in on what level they agreed or disagreed to.

Conclusion: The conclusion on this study is that affect which are one of the three components that builds up attitudes. It is the component that positively influence teenagers the most. We can also see that social media have a great positive impact on their attitudes followed by luxury marketing and psychological benefits.

Explicita organisationsvärderingar - ett skyltfönster eller en vägledning: En kvalitativ studie av en organisations explicita värderingar2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examined an organization that expresses its values explicitly. Many organizations in both public and private sector choose to express the values that the organization would like to be associated with. What is rarely clear is what these values mean for the employee. It is against this background that the purpose of the study took its shape. The purpose of this study is to investigate which function the organization’s explicit values fill in the everyday work.

The authors of this study have conducted six interviews with employees in an organization that has made their values public. One of the results from the interviews shows that the organizational values stand for what the organization wants to be associated with. Employees are expected to use the values as a guide in the everyday work and the organization's surroundings can see the values as a guide in terms of expectations for their meeting with the organization. One of the study findings therefore prove that the most important feature of the organizational values is represented as a control variable. Employees in the organization are shaped to adapt such behaviour that could be related to the organizational values.

Keywords: Explicit values, control, organizational culture, interpretation

Materialets inverkan på barns lek: En studie med inriktning på intra-aktioner utifrån ett posthumanistiskt perspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to increase understanding for the work that student health staff do in elementary school to face mental health issues among students. To investigate this we have used qualitative research by conducting 9 interviews. We conducted the interviews at 3 different schools in Halmstad municipality. We have used a hermeneutical methodological approach. In order to interpret the empirical data we used theories and concepts such as inclusion/ exclusion (Jan Inge Jönhill, 2012), social capital (Pierre Bourdieu, 2011) and stigma (Erving Goffman, 2011). Our study shows how the student health staff takes care of their assignments. Several of the informants mention that there is a good relationship between student health staff and students, which motivate staff and students to do a good job. A issue we saw based on empirical material was there is not enough space to perform preventive work. Also there were problems getting informations out.

How a fashion company can create higher brand equity - the importance of using social media2014Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - With the social media's emergence in recent times, the main purpose of this study is to generate knowledge about social media communication’s impact on consumer-based brand equity, in terms of firm-created and user-generated social media communication. In order to make this possible, knowledge about customer’s perception about a specific brand is required. Furthermore, we are interested in explaining issues concerning how fashion companies can efficiently use social media, and the study’s intention is also to present recommendations of how companies can use social media as a marketing communication tool.

Theory and hypothesis – This chapter deals with theory about consumer-based brand equity, where the different components of the model are presented. Also theory about social media, different social media applications and a social media strategy are described. Finally, firm- created and user-generated social media communications impact on brand equity are discussed, which leads to the study’s hypotheses.

Methodology – The study has a triangulation consisting of both a qualitative and a quantitative part and has essentially a deductive approach. The study interviewed one expert in the fashion industry and one expert in the area of social media. An interview with the analysed company’s marketing manager was also made. The quantitative study was made on 624 respondents, which were all members of the company’s customer club. 97 of these 624 respondents were investigated in order to observe the impact of firm-created and user- generated social media communication on brand equity.

Empirical findings and results – The findings in the study indicate that firm-created social media communication positively impact brand equity, while user-generated did not show to be significant. In this study it was shown that the majority of the respondents use social media, especially Facebook, and the content that most valuable was access to discounts and promotions as well as information about the brand and its products.

Conclusion - Our study confirms the importance for companies to use social media as a marketing tool and it should be in all managers’ interest to make use of this channel. Also the importance of having high brand equity is highlighted and how the customer’s perceptions about a brand can be used as guidelines in order to increase brand equity.

Makt och vanmakt: En kvalitativ studie om f.d. kriminellas upplevelser av återintegrering till samhället genom arbetsmarknaden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In a society, the idea is that a person who performs criminal acts should receive a second chance of reintegrating into society after a penalty. Legally, the criminal becomes a regular citizen again after a penalty, but is the punishment really served? Nowadays background checks of the jobseekers have become increasingly common and are an aspect that is crucial in employment. Statistics from the police department show that the government left out 740,000 registry extracts during the first 11 months of 2017, which is 10,000 more than the corresponding period in 2016. In ten years, requests have tripled. The purpose of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of how ex-criminals experience their reintegration into society through the labor market. The data has been collected through qualitative semistructured interviews with seven ex-criminals and has been interpreted on the basis of hermeneutical methodology. The analysis of the material has been done in support of the theories stämplingsteorin by Becker, hänsynsemotionssystem och sociala band of Scheff, as well as stigma of Goffman. The result of the analysis showed that when the ex-criminals take the big step to leave the crime, they are not given a chance to prove that they have changed. The visualization of their criminal background makes constraints and feelings of shame, both in working life and in the ability to build safe and strong social ties.

Lärandet i vardagen: En etnografisk studie i tränarens praktik2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Builders and cleaners: a longitudinal study of strategic narratives2008In: Journal of Organizational Change Management, ISSN 0953-4814, E-ISSN 1758-7816, Vol. 21, no 3, p. 280-299Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this research paper is to contribute to strategy theory by differentiating different types of top management narratives and trying to understand the interplay between them as well as the dynamics over time.

Design/methodology/approach: The study was designed from an interpretative narrative approach. Narratives were produced from deep interviews and organisational documents covering a period of more than 25 years.

Findings: Two kinds of narratives were detected – builders and cleaners. The builders' narratives illustrate how personal life‐stories are embedded in the strategic development processes but the cleaners' narratives are organisational stories without personal life‐stories and cover no actual development. The concept meta‐narrative helped to understand strategic changes over time and was embedded in the myth‐periods involved. The meta‐narrative identified was built on an idea of a going concern and on the role to produce physical large objects for long‐term use.

Research limitations/implications: Owing to the longitudinal design of the study a cyclical pattern with related managerial narratives were produced. The dichotomy builders and cleaners could be developed studying other longitudinal business strategies and also by connections to meta‐narratives derived from more general economic theories.

Practical implications: Builders and cleaners focus on either business or organisational/financial aspects but neither of both. Awareness of this, learning strategic management requires co‐operation between different actors.

Originality/value: The longitudinal design describes and analyzes a cyclical pattern of managerial patterns, while other studies based on narratives cover more limited organisational events in time and space.

    Abstract [sv]

In a football bubble: Cultural transition narratives of Swedish elite football players2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate cultural transition experience in elite football. More specifically, to explore three Swedish football players experience of their first transition abroad when relocating to play professional football in Europe. A narrative inquiry approach was used, with help of the cultural transition model (Ryba, Stambulova, & Ronkainen, 2016) a semi-structured interview guide was created. The cultural transition model was also used as a lens for analyzing the data. The participants were non-randomly sampled and recruited with help from the Swedish Football Federation. Four players responded positively and initiated the interview, three was fully conducted while one dropped out. The data were analyzed with holistic-content and categorical-content analysis to show three unique pathways but also common themes of their cultural transitions. The first result showed the uniqueness of the players pathways; preparing for the worst and saved by the football bubble, taking responsibility and a key role as a foreign player to gain respect in the team, and a big step for personal development: from homesickness to being hungry for more. Secondly, the result showed that the participant shared experience in the cultural transition process which are presented in 12 themes (e.g. Pre-transition phase: satisfaction in Swedish club before leaving, Acute cultural adaptation phase: adjustment in football as first priority in host culture, and Sociocultural adaptation: perceived ability and efficacy to adjust to new cultural settings). In conclusion, adaptation in football was prioritized during the first period of relocation, that means that they fully invested to show that they were good. However, after this first phase, having a meaningful life besides football became one of the most important things to feel satisfied. Although there are still questions unanswered regarding cultural transition in elite football, implications to Swedish Football Federation were given in further working with professional players who go abroad.

Relationen mellan motivationsklimat och psykologiskt välbefinnande hos unga elitfotbollsspelare2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

KAMPSPORTSSPECIFIKT MENTALT TUFFHETS- TEST: Utvecklingsprocessen av ett psykometriskt instrument2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Title: Human capital – A study about what roles factors play in human capital reporting in listed Swedish knowledge enterprises in their annual reports?

Authors: Jacob Söderström and Oskar Kallenberg

    Completed: 29/6-2016

    Tutor: Titti Eliasson

Background: The West has evolved from being a manufacturing society to become an information society, this development has led to new needs and created new areas of concern in the financial statements (Dean, McKenna, & Krishnan, 2012). Companies that possess few physical resources, such as knowledge companies may have problems to show the value of the company is located, as their most important asset is its staff.

Aim: Our study aims to identify and test the institutional factors, which can explain human capital reporting in listed Swedish knowledge enterprises in their annual reports.

Formulation of the problem: What impact does the institutional factors have on human capital reporting in listed Swedish knowledge enterprises in their annual reports?

Methodology: We have in our study of human capital chosen to use a deductive approach where we deducted two indicators, industry and company size. Using the indicators we developed two hypotheses. The approach of our data collection was that we developed a comparison matrix that we used to examine the company's annual reports. The document survey gave us data which we used to create T-tests, where we tested our hypotheses.

Results: We have in our study concluded that there are no assocation between the study’s indicators and the reported number of human capital key figures. An explanation using the institutional theory for the result may be that the surveyed companies do not identify with the definitions, the study uses for industry and company size. We found that the study surveyed companies mainly report their human capital in a low or non-existent scope, which was also a contributing factor to that there was not a correlation between study factors and the number of reported ratios.

Collaborative Business Model for Logistics Cluster2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Clusters seem to not only contribute directly to productivity of the nation as a whole but seem to have a positive effect on other clusters. Yet there has been no research made by researchers that look into the development of business models or joint value propositions made by a cluster as a whole. The authors have failed to identify any common view on the research field today of just how a business model for an industrial logistic cluster should look like as well as what components are essential and must be included. Therefore, the purpose of our research was to explore the contextual conditions for developing BM for industrial cluster in the logistic area.

In order to reach the goal of our research, inductive based approach was used when trying to investigate a cluster in Halmstad called “Innovative Logistic in Halmstad”. The cluster is in a early stage at this moment. Data was collected through interviews and secondary data was collected to complement our findings as well.

The main findings of our study are as follows. The authors create a conceptual business model for industrial cluster in the logistic area. We also offer a value package proposal where the cluster offer a client a joint value proposition as the main majority of companies buy their logistic transports. This could result in e.g. more eco-driven means of transportation.

Balansen mellan arbetsrollen och familjerollen: hur några manliga chefer upplever att de förenar dessa roller2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how some male managers felt about the balance between professional roles and family roles. The study was based on the following questions: How has the balance been like between family life and working life? How has parental leave taken? How has the role division been in the home? Methodological has a semi-structured interview method with a predetermined interview guide been used. The sample consisted of eight male managers in both the municipal and private sectors in Halmstad. Of the eight interviews there was one falling off. The interviews continued between 35-50 minutes. The results shows that the male managers felt that they had a relatively good balance between work and family. They said it was not easy to achieve this balance. Most managers felt that men with higher positions find it more difficult to find this balance between work and family. They have higher demands on there time and a greater burden of responsibility than other employees. The discussion concerned the following topics: Balance between work and family, parental leave, role conflict and role allocation.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Upplevda utmaningar och copingstrategier hos före detta RIG-studenter: En retrospektiv longitudinell studie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate the experiences of challenges and coping strategies among former student-athletes who had studied at different RIG’s in Sweden. Seven participants, four women and three men, in the ages between 22–31 (M=25.1, SD=3.1) took part in the study. To investigate the purpose, a semi-structured interview guide was applied, based on the holistic athletic career model (Wylleman et al., 2013). Questions about sport, studies, private life and a combination of all three factors were central. The result showed that the biggest challenge during the first year was adapting to a new environment, the hardest challenge overall during the second year consisted of dealing with a higher athletic and academic level as well as time management and the most important challenge during the third year was dealing with even higher athletic levels and dealing with the future, what would happen after RIG. The factors that were mentioned the most were the difficulty to dedicate enough time to the sport, the studies and the private life, dealing with injuries, as well as making time for personal activities and recovery. The study also showed that the most important coping strategy consisted of social support from family, friends and coaches, in terms of instrumental and emotional support. Even personal resources, for example self-discipline, self-regulation, planning and stress management were important coping strategies. Based on the result of the present study, it is recommended that coaches, teachers and parents get a better understanding of the life as a RIG-student, in order to normalize the concept of dual careers in society.

Informal investors: a categorization, with policy implications2001In: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, ISSN 0898-5626, E-ISSN 1464-5114, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 351-370Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A number of studies concerning informal investors have been carried out over the last two decades. One main conclusion from previous research has been that the informal venture capital market is very heterogeneous, and that classifications for informal investors are needed in order to more accurately depict the informal venture capital market. In this paper we propose that the market could be divided in accordance with the informal investors' investment activity and competence. The study is based on a sample of 425 active informal investors, divided into four different categories: (1) Lotto investors; (2) Traders; (3) Analytical investors; and (4) Business angels. The empirical findings show that there are considerable differences between the four categories of informal investors; differences regarding the information sources used, the level of firm involvement, co-investing, investment horizons, and geographic preferences, to name some examples. As a consequence, each of the various informal investor types responds differently to private and public prospects or motivators. It is suggested, therefore, that the informal venture capital market could be more effectively analysed and depicted by using the proposed classifications and applying differing measures to each informal investor category.

We've Got 99 Problems, but a Phone Ain't One: Mobile ICT and Academic Agility in Information Systems Research2014In: Proceedings of the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2014, Tel Aviv, Israel, June 9-11, 2014, [S.l.]: AISeL , 2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The year 2013 celebrated the 40th anniversary since Martin Cooper made the World's first mobile phone call setting off a slow start to a mobile revolution diffusing a range of mobile information and communication technologies (mobile ICT) within reach of just about anyone. This paper explores how the Information Systems (IS) field has reacted to this significant phenomenon as an example of a measure of our field's agility in quickly addressing environmental changes to the sociotechnical phenomena constituting our field and incorporating these changes into the mainstream academic discussions. The main assumption is that irrespective of what possible impact and influence the IS field may have on such emerging phenomena, it is an essential part of the field's justification for existence to provide academically grounded treatments of the most significant sociotechnical phenomena. Given the force, pace and generativity of contemporary ICT development, we assume an increasing need for the IS field to display agility in the way it considers emerging phenomena and either rejects or adopts them as significant for the field. This paper explores the IS field response to mobile ICT as an example of such need for academic agility. A bibliometric study of the basked of eight journals from 2000 to 2010 reveals that the IS field still needs to find ways of responding to developments in a more agile manner.

    Abstract [en]

The demand for information and transparency from corporations has increased over the last few years. Today, there are other information dissemination channels besides annual financial statements. One important channel is the Internet. The aim of this study is to explain the extent and content of social disclosure information on corporations' websites. The empirical data in this study is based on annual financial statements and such websites. A multi-theoretical framework is used in order to explain the extent and content of social disclosures on corporate websites. The findings support the positive correlation of size and profitability with the content of social disclosure information on these websites. In general, State-owned corporations disclose more social information on their websites than privately owned corporations do. There are significant differences between different industries. This is true regarding not only the extent of social disclosures, but also their content. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment.

Social disclosures in Swedish municipalities’ annual financial statements2009Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Public awareness and interest in environmental and social issues as well as increased attention in the mass media have resulted in a higher demand for social disclosures from organisations. The aim of this study is to explain the extent and variation of content in social disclosures among Swedish municipalities. The empirical data is based on annual financial statements and archive data from official statistics. In this study we take an eclectic approach, and use a multi-theoretical framework in order to explain the content and extent of social disclosures. The study reveals that municipalities in general report very little social information. The statistical analyses show that the extent of social disclosures is associated with size, tax base, tax rate, financial performance and political majority. In general, the same variables that explain the extent of social disclosures also seem to explain differences in the content of disclosures between different municipalities.

    Abstract [en]

Effective and creative cyber-physical systems (CPS) development requires expertise in disparate fields that have traditionally been taught in several distinct disciplines. At the same time, students seeking a CPS education generally come from diverse educational backgrounds. In this paper, we report on our recent experience developing and teaching a course on CPS. The course addresses the following three questions: What are the core elements of CPS? How should these core concepts be integrated in the CPS design process? What types of modeling tools can assist in the design of cyber-physical systems? Our experience with the first three offerings of the course has been positive overall. We also discuss the lessons we learned from some issues that were not handled well. All material including lecture notes and software used for the course are openly available online. © 2014 ACM.

Flipping a First Course on Cyber-Physical Systems – An Experience Report2016In: Proceedings Of The 2016 Workshop On Embedded And Cyber-Physical Systems Education (Wese), New York: ACM Press, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The flipped classroom format involves swapping activities traditionally performed inside and outside the classroom. The expected effects from this swap include increased student engagement and peer-to-peer interaction in the classroom, as well as more flexible access to learning materials. Key criteria for successful outcomes from these effects include improved test scores and enhanced student satisfaction. Unfortunately, while many researchers have reported positive outcomes from the approach, some instructors can still encounter difficulties in reproducing this success.

In this paper we report our experiences with flipping a first course on Cyber-Physical Systems at Halmstad University. The course is required for a Masters level program and is available as an elective for undergraduates. The focus of this report is on three separate editions of the course taught over three years. In the first year, lectures were recorded. In the second, the same instructor taught the course using the flipped format. In the third, new instructors taught it using the flipped classroom format.

Our experience suggests that flipping a classroom can lead to improved student performance and satisfaction from the first edition. It can also enable new instructors to take over the course and perform at a level comparable to an experienced instructor. On the other hand, it also suggests that the format may require more effort to prepare for, and to teach, than the traditional format, and that a higher level of attention to detail is needed to execute it with positive outcomes. Thus, the format can be demanding for instructors. It is also the case that not all students preferred this format.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze equalities/inequalities between the Danish and Swe-dish immigration policy based on Habermas theory about openings/closures and analyze the reasons to the differences between Danish and Swedish immigrant policy. Therefore this study has two question formulations, the first one was "Is there any equalities/inequalities between the Danish and Swedish immigration policy based on Habermas theory of openings and closings?" and the second was "Why are there equalities/inequalities between the Danish and Swedish immigration policy?" The results show that based on Habermas theory there are equalities between the Danish and Swedish immigration policy. On the question why, the re-sults show us that the factors who give the difference are work, people’s attitude to immi-grants and party politics.

Relationskomponenternas betydelse i en upphandlingprocess mellan konsult och kund:  2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates a number of components that influence the relationship between consultant and client in a procurement process of ERP. The paper deals with Trust, Commitment, Cooperation and Satisfaction. The problem lies within the fact that consultants do not know how and to what extent the components affect relationship quality. Based on the theories in the areas of procurement, relationship marketing and relationship quality, information has been gathered about how the various authors believe a procurement process works, how they view relationship marketing and how relationship quality is created. The components discussed are trust, commitment, cooperation and satisfaction. The empirical data is based on four companies, all active in the procurement of business systems. Our focus is on the consultant and how to handle the procurement process, how to create quality relationship with customers and how the components affect the relationship of the consultant's perspective. The procurement process is based on theoretical model of Verville and Halingten (2003). Relationship quality addresses how a good relationship is built up between the consultant and the client by McLachlin (2000). The importance of components in relationships is highlighted by Wilsons (1995) model. The method uses a deductive approach to qualitative inquire our respondents. The theories are then analyzed with empirical data from the four respondents, all consultants, to see how the procurement process and relationship quality are applied in practice. With the help of qualitative, empirical studies the consideration given to the components are reviewed. The analysis presents how the components affect the relationship quality seen from the view of the respondents. This has been established in a model of the procurement process where the constituent meaning is produced by how active or latent they are in the various procurement phases. The conclusion confirms that the components have a strong importance for the relationship during the procurementprocess

Hur uppfattas etik och moral i reality-tv?: En studie ur deltagar- och tittarperspektiv2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Läsundersökningsprojekt i samarbete med kommuner2005Conference paper (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

DYSLEXI, INTERNET OCH STIGMA: en netnografisk studie av nätbaserad kommunikation hos personer med dyslexi2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis

The thesis is written in Swedish.

Our communication continually changes, and the internet is an important factor in that development. New ways of making writing more efficient, for example the use of abbreviations and special symbols are emerging. We mix written language with photos, films, sound clips and links. Norms for what is considered to be the correct use of language are displaced. When our abilities do not match society’s expectations, stigmatization occurs. This is what happens to a person with dyslexia when the demands placed upon them for their reading and writing abilities become too high. What happens when the communication moves into the online environment? The following three issues are addressed:

How do individuals with dyslexia communicate online?

How do individuals with dyslexia relate to their online communication?

How do individuals with dyslexia control their stigma when communicating online?

The study is a two-part qualitative case study based upon semi-structured interviews and netnographic shadowing with two informants, Andreas and Linda. The results were analysed with reference to Goffman’s theory of stigma. In spite of the fact that Andreas has greater difficulties with reading and writing than Linda, he experiences less stigma in relation to communication, since he more consciously manages to control his stigma. A crucial factor for both informants is whether or not the online forum is synchronous or asynchronous (it is impossible for them to pass in synchronous forums). Hence, the study suggests that the degree of stigmatization does not necessarily correspond to the degree of difficulties with reading and writing.

Increased Agency through Screens and Co-Creation – Literacy Practices within a Group of People with Aphasia at a Swedish Folk High School2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 197-206Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to analyse characteristics of collective and authentic literacy practices within a group of people with aphasia attending an aphasia course at a Swedish folk high school. The group included 12 individuals with aphasia who were studied during a period of 3 weeks. Ethnographic data consists of video and audio recordings, photos and field notes. Two main characteristics of the literacy practices were identified: digital screens dominated and bridged the online/offline boundary, and shared knowledge enabled the participants to co-create literacy. The literacy practices were emancipatory, because they provided ways for the participants to un-mask their inherent competence, increasing their agency. When the use of digital technology transforms a (formerly non-literacy) practice into a multimodal literacy practice, and when an individual with aphasia becomes part of a literacy co-creation practice, the disability (understood as a relation between individual and environmental characteristics) caused by aphasia is reduced. © 2019 The Author(s).

Online and offline re-negotiation of self when living with post-stroke aphasia2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Aphasia, i.e. language disorder caused by brain injury (most commonly stroke), affects some 10.000 people in Sweden every year, 30% of whom are between 18 and 65. Much has been said about neurological or medical aspects of aphasia, but experiences of people affected are much less studied.

When living with post-stroke aphasia, the stroke constitutes a boundary between separate phases of life, often evoking an identity crisis and a need of a re-negotiation of self. Considering that 90% of the Swedish working-age population are Internet users, this re-negotiation process will necessarily include online aspects. Nevertheless, research combining aphasia, identity and online communication is scarce. Thus, this study aimed to investigate how working-age Swedish Internet users with post-stroke aphasia re-negotiate their identity, offline and online.

Method: Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine individuals (three men and six women) living with post-stroke aphasia (all diagnosed R470). At the time of the interviews, they were between 26 and 61 years old. In addition, a total of 1,581 online posts (e.g. photos, videos, text, emoticons) created by the same participants were analysed.

Results: The analyses indicate that the participants, in their re-negotiation of self, frequently position themselves in relation to other disabilities, e.g. by stating “I am not stupid” or “At least, I can walk”. This positioning varied depending on which points in time (i.e. pre-stroke, acute phase, rehabilitation, post-stroke) were taken into account.

Conclusion: Whereas some of the participants struggled to maintain a representation of themselves similar to their pre-stroke identity, some proudly embraced aphasia as a new aspect of their identity. Furthermore, they seemed to have better opportunities to control the renegotiation process in online settings than offline.

Online communication as improved stigma management in post-stroke aphasia2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: As in most developed countries, a large majority of the Swedish population are Internet users. Within the working-age population, the percentage is >90. Hence a large extent of the literacy practices and identity construction of Swedish people take place online. The increasing importance of being able to read and write is a challenge for people living with an acquired language disorder, such as aphasia (affecting some 10.000 individuals in Sweden every year). Linguistic practices are important mediating tools for identity construction. Aphasia can therefore be understood not only as (partially) losing one’s language and literacy skills per se, but also as being deprived of one’s identity. However, this is rarely taken into account in aphasia rehabilitation, and research combining aphasia, identity and online communication practices is scarce.

Aim: The aim of the current study is to examine how working-age Swedish Internet users with post-stroke aphasia construct their identity online.

Methods: Interviews were conducted with nine Swedish individuals (aged 26-61, three men and six women) with post-stroke aphasia. In addition, a total of >2000 online posts (e.g. photos, videos, text, emoticons) made by the same participants were collected.

Results: Analyses of the data, based on Goffman’s theory of stigma management, indicated that the participants made active choices whether to display or hide their aphasia online. Some of them proudly displayed their difficulties (e.g. by posting their medical record, or posting texts with errors) while others made efforts to hide them (e.g. by sharing texts written by others instead of writing themselves, or preferring emoticons or the like-button over commenting in writing), thus creating a difference between their offline and online identity. Offline, this kind of stigma management was less available to them.

Conclusion: A possible conclusion is that the participants’ online literacy practices to a large extent aimed at controlling who knew what about them, i.e. to control their stigma by presenting different identities in different contexts. It appears as if the participants consider the Internet, with its wide range of communication tools (including pictures, like-buttons, emoticons), a better arena for stigma management than their offline practices.

Signs of aphasia: Online identity and stigma management in post-stroke aphasia2017In: Cyberpsychology : Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace, ISSN 1802-7962, E-ISSN 1802-7962, Vol. 11, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to investigate online strategies for re-negotiating identity, in terms of stigma management, developed by working-age Swedish Internet users with post-stroke aphasia, i.e., acquired language impairment caused by brain injury. Interviews were conducted with nine individuals (aged 26-61, three men and six women) with post-stroke aphasia. In addition, a total of 1,581 screenshots of online posts (e.g., photos, videos, text, emoticons) created by the same participants were collected. Drawing on social semiotics (specifically the three dimensions of online communication mentioned by Kress (2003), i.e., composition, content and context) and Goffman’s theory of stigma (1963, specifically the concepts of stigma management and passing), qualitative thematic analysis was performed. Regarding composition, three themes emerged: Relying on others or technology, Beyond speaking and writing, and Controlling speed and timing. The participants rarely posted content about aphasia, but some of them used the Internet to raise awareness. Different online contexts had different meaning to the participants in terms of identity. Being open about the aphasia in one forum did not imply the same behaviour in another forum (e.g., dating sites). For the participants to pass (Goffman, 1963), should they want to, they needed to control all three dimensions. If the context or the composition revealed the stigma, controlling the content was not enough to pass. The multimodality of the Internet enabled the participants to manage their stigma in a variety of ways and to choose whether to be perceived as persons with aphasia or not. © 2017, Masaryk University. Still the same? – Self-identity dilemmas when living with post-stroke aphasia in a digitalised society2019In: Aphasiology, ISSN 0268-7038, E-ISSN 1464-5041Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Self-identity construction through “stories of self” is highly relevant for people with aphasia, not only because the onset entails a “biographical disruption” but also since their ability to keep their “stories of self” going is reduced. Three dilemmas (constancy/change, sameness/difference and agency/dependency) are known to be central to identity. In a digitalised society like Sweden, self-identity construction, including the navigation of these dilemmas, takes place both online and offline. Nevertheless, research combining aphasia, identity and online issues is scarce.

Aim: This qualitative study aims, in terms identity dilemmas, to investigate self-identity construction in working-age persons living with post-stroke aphasia in a digitalised society (i.e. Sweden). Are the dilemmas relevant to the participants, and if so, how do they navigate them online and offline?

Methods and Procedures: Nine individuals (three men and six women, aged 24–54 at onset) with mild or moderate post-stroke aphasia participated. The data comprises nine individual audio-recorded interviews and 1,581 screenshots from online observations. Qualitative analyses were performed (vertically and horizontally), combining inductive and deductive approaches.

Outcomes and Results: All three dilemmas are relevant to the participants. They construct their self-identity as both the same as they were pre-stroke and changed. They are both the same and different in relation to other stroke survivors (with or without aphasia), i.e. both “disabled” and “normal”. They display both dependency and agency. Thus, they navigate the dilemmas by constantly negotiating what to include in their stories of self. In addition, telling one story of self offline does not imply telling the same story online.

Conclusion: The dilemmas are intertwined and highly relevant to the participants. Offline and online settings evoke different ways for them to navigate the dilemmas. Increased awareness of the possible struggle with self-identity dilemmas in people with aphasia, and the possible difference between their online and offline self-identities, should be of value to family members, clinicians and researchers. Further research based on a larger sample is suggested.
