A Comparative Case Study on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) between SMEs and MNCs2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the behaviors that multinational corporations(MNCs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are taking for carrying outcorporate social responsibility (CSR) under the context of sustainable development.Besides, the factors which drive and influence the performance are further exploredand discussed. The thesis is to be analyzed by means of a literature review, qualitative case study,semi-structured interviews, within case study and cross case study.By adopting these methods, the thesis shows that both MNCs and SMEs are aware ofand actively shouldering CSR in spite of different contents and approaches. MNCs areable to integrate economic, environment and social values into CSR strategy whileSMEs focus more on economic values. Competitive pressures, social expectations andinternal governance system are the main drivers of MNCs. By contrast, owners’ desiregives rise to the performance of carrying out CSR strategy by SMEs.It is suggested that a new domain of CSR namely, political social responsibility isfound through the study. It demonstrates that MNCs with the state-owned nature haveparticular missions and responsibilities to serve the country and society, which is notcommon but exists in the world.

Current Wastewater Sludge Treatment Situation in Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

China has long faced the exponential increase of wastewater. Therefore, sludge as the byproduct of wastewater treatment is a worldwide and difficult problem to treat and dispose. Many cities in China are trying to find an appropriate method of achieving this. However, due to a lack of funding, technology and research, some methods suitable for local conditions are still not available, even in the most modern and biggest cities in China. This thesis is intended to describe the method used for the treatment and disposal of sludge from industries now in Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing. Compared with these three cities, Beijing produces more sludge per day, while Shanghai has the least sludge production. Further, the industrial waste piping system is not separated from the domestic system in these three cities. Moreover, the percentage of treated sludge is still very low in Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing. Among these three cities, even the highest treatment rate of sludge is 35.41% (Beijing). The lowest is only 10.08% (Chongqing). Considering that much more sludge will be produced in the next a few years, the current situation in these three cities presents a stern challenge. Also, a calculation about the cost of disposal of sludge in these cities is included in this thesis. Incineration is most expensive method of disposal of sludge in China, while composting is the cheapest. Considering the huge population, the current technology and the economic conditions in China, composting is the best option for the disposal of sludge.

How does a company Go green?: Important steps towards a sustainable business strategy2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The results of the supposed man-made climate change have lead to a concern for the environment that is affecting how businesses operate. Businesses are facing greater pressure from stakeholders and government regulations to take more responsibility and care for the environment. Thus companies are facing a wide spectrum of new problems, but also new opportunities. In facing these problems companies must react to how the world is changing and to integrate environmental concerns into the vision and company strategy to become a more environmentally friendly and thus greener company. An issue pressing is how to maintain sustainability for the environment as well as pursuing to be a sustainable company facing the threats of today and the future to come due to climate change. Important aspects a company must take into consideration in order to go green are: sustainability, company strategy, government regulations, internal processes and policies, corporate social responsibility and how to form a corporate culture as these are all parts of how a company changes into focusing on becoming greener and thus more environmentally friendly.

This study brings forth the actions and reactions of three companies perceived as pioneers towards becoming greener in their respective industries. During the course of mapping out how a company goes green, an analytical model has been created with the help of already existing and accepted theoretical frameworks. The purpose of the model is to create structure and consistency to map out what important steps the company has taken to become greener. A qualitative method of research has been applied. Three respondents active in various fields, all with environmental connections, from Wilhelm Wilhelmsen (WW), Statkraft and Statoil has been interviewed with questions concerning their work towards sustainability and a green vision within the company. The analysis is based on relevant theories combined with the empirical data collected. What stands out in the conclusions is that the companies researched have taken different important steps when becoming greener and working to achieve sustainability. The differences can be illustrated in the own-developed model. The model is applied to crystallize what dimensions in the companies that are affected. Factors such as government regulations and how internal processes and policies are changed are standing out as examples of how a company’s dimensions are affected differently depending on the respective company’s strategy and business model.

Det informella nätverkets betydelse2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]
This study about informal networks shows that most company owners in Gnosjö have extensive informal networks, but the authors believe that it is of importance that also company owners outside of Gnosjö understand the benefits of participating in such networks. An open exchange of ideas creates a more relaxed environment, which leads to a more creativity and a sense of reward. While still competing, the exchange of information and services between company owners makes it possible for them to spur each other on. This could contribute to the future development of their businesses. The authors mean that an efficient use of informal networks gives individual company owners in regions increased strength with regards to the four points that Porter (1990) posits in his Diamond model; Firm strategy, structure and rivalry, Factor conditions, Demand conditions and Supporting industries.

Mäklaryrkets etik och moral2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Implementation of Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in a Swedish Environment2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Problem Area: The American company Enron was the seventh largest company notated on the stock market when it went bankrupt due to extensive accounting frauds in December 2001. By manipulating the financial reports, the management of Enron was able to hide huge debts through transactions with external companies. Therefore, they were able to deceive the public by reporting huge profits while the company, in reality, was generating a negative result. As a result of the bankruptcy, 40 billion dollars disappeared and tens of thousands of employees lost their jobs and pension savings. After the Enron scandal, further accounting frauds were discovered in the US, such as WorldCom and Tyco. The WorldCom bankruptcy is, as of today, the largest bankruptcy in the world. Following the scandals and the accounting frauds in a number US companies, the US congress passed a law – the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX).

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine how companies in Sweden have managed to implement SOX Sec. 404 – for ensuring internal control. The researchers will examine how different Swedish companies have approached the issue and how they have chosen to implement SOX sec. 404 in their organisation. Have some companies been more effective in their implementation than others and why? Limitations: SOX cover several areas around internal control and reporting. The authors will mainly study Sec. 404, which treats internal control over financial reporting, and is the section that has demanded most effort to comply with. Methodology: The study was conducted by a qualitative research method by conducting personal interviews with respondents from three different companies in Sweden. All of the participating companies in the study are obliged to comply with SOX. Conclusion: The researchers in this study have identified differences in the approach towards SOX-compliance by the participating organisations. The lack of how to implement guidance and the different approaches taken by companies towards SOX compliance may suggest that there is no supreme implementation guide that is suitable for all companies in order to achieve compliance. Proposals for Further Research: As the implementation phase just recently was completed the authors would like to find out how companies are sustaining compliance in the future. Researchers could focus on sustainable compliance as compared to this study where sustainable compliance is merely limited to one section. In addition, it would be interesting to carry out an in-depth study on one company to evaluate their implementation on a deeper level. This would give the researcher a deeper understanding which is more difficult to achieve when conducting a comparative study.

Branding E-commerce Privacy2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]
In this dissertation the issues of privacy in E-Commerce are explored, as well as countermeasures to consumers privacy concerns, such as the usage of privacy statements and branding. An empirical study was conducted among a hundred respondents, all well experienced with the Internet. The study revealed that privacy is a genuine concern among consumers, which indeed affects their purchase behaviour. Other findings were: q Concerns regarding privacy are intertwined with concerns about credit cards handling. q Privacy statements have a marginal positive affect on consumers, and are most efficient when stated by a well-known and/or well-liked brand. q Consumers perceived and valid concerns regarding their privacy can to some extent be calmed and reduced with the primarily aid of a well known and/or a well-perceived brand. q Finally, if the method of privacy statements can be replaced with a more effective tool, a high level of trustworthiness will be ensured by the successful usage of branding.

KONSTEN ATT VARA KVINNA OCH CHEF I EN MANSDOMINERAD BRANSCH2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: In the early 1900s as industrialism spread across Sweden, people relocated from countryside to major cities as paid labor had become more common (Löfström, 2005). Industrialism also affected the already conspicuously increasing gap between men’s and women’s rights and roles in labor (Löfström, 2005). As the men provided for the family, women were expected to care for the household as homemakers (Löfström, 2005). In Sweden men got suffrage 1907 and women first 1919 (NE, 2011a; NE, 2011b). Women’s rights have improved over the years and as a result there is now a somewhat equable allocation between men and women on today’s overall labor market (Löfström, 2005). There is however a few industries which has fallen behind in striving for gender equality. In the construction industry this is evident as men fill 96 % and women fill only 4 % of managerial positions (SCB, 2008). A study of the construction industry, conducted in spring of 2010, shows that the number of women holding managerial positions is more likely to decrease than the other way around (Busic, 2010). So the question is why there are so few women holding managerial positions in the construction industry?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how elements like the glass ceiling, stereotypes, networking, family and household affect women’s possibilities of reaching managerial positions in the construction industry. In doing so, our aim is to contribute new results in this specific field of research.

METHODOLOGY: Since this study aims to increase the understanding of a phenomenon, we concluded that a qualitative research would best serve our purpose. Four separate interviews were conducted, all with women holding managerial positions at smaller construction companies located within Halland County.

RESULTS: Through our study of four women holding managerial positions in constructions companies, we have concluded that family and household constitutes an obstacle for women aiming to reach managerial positions. This is caused by the fact that women invest more time in family and household duties in comparison with men. SCB (2007) strengthens the study’s results by presenting statistics showing that women spends twice as much time with family and household compared to men. This study also concludes that the glass ceiling, stereotypes and networks do not constitutes obstacles for women to reach managerial positions in the construction industry. Our conclusion is that family and household, unlike the glass ceiling, stereotypes and networks, constitutes an obstacle for women aiming to reach managerial positions and is therefore the reason why there are so few women holding managerial positions in the construction industry in Halland County.

    Abstract [en]

Bicycle thefts are a common problem in today’s society. In Sweden, 65 700 bicycle thefts were reported to the police during 2011. The market’s bicycle locks are in one or another way possible to break up. As soon as the lock is broken the bicycle is as useful as before. The client of the bachelor thesis had ideas about a new bicycle lock which prevents the usefulness of the bicycle after the lock has been broken. The idea resulted in cooperation between the client, me and the technical consulting company, Cross Design. The collaboration developed the idea and resulted in this bachelor thesis.

The thesis purpose has been to create a primary construction of a new bicycle lock which does not exist on today’s market. A construction process has been followed and delimited to principle and primary construction.

The study includes a product research, development of criteria from the client and the European standards EN 14764: 2005, City and trekking bicycles - Safety requirements and test methods and EN 15496: 2008, Cycles – Requirements and test methods for cycle locks, requirements. The criteria development was followed by creating ideas and result in a primary solution which was constructed and calculated in Catia V5.

An innovative bicycle lock which prevents the bicycle’s usefulness after the lock is broken was the thesis result. The primary construction has given the client a base for further development of a prototype and manufacturing construction.

Utveckling av stomme för lantbruk2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Servicekvalitet i fastighetsskötseln2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Värdering av företag1993Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The objective of this bachelor thesis has been to develope a working prorotype of harddisc interface. The interface is intended to increase the performance without beeing expensive. No software drivers should be needed to use the interface. Finding reference sources, especially regarding the DSP has been very difficult which has delayed the project. We have not reached our objective to build our prototype. The FPGA source is completed and simulations of the circuits works. The DSP c-code is partially finished, but lacks a few pieces which could not be written without the hardware. The hardware is designed but not realized.

    Abstract [sv]

In Sweden, responsibility for the collection and recycling of packaging and newspapers lies with the producers. Therefore, the major producers created a joint

collection with 5800 recycling stations. The stations are the responsibility of a coordinating body, Förpacknings och Tidningsinsamlingen (FTI) which ensures Government regulations are adhered to by the producers.

In 2006, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) carried out an evaluation of the collection of packaging and newspapers. EPA´s research showed

that 80 percent of households were satisfied with the collection but that there were also shortcomings, including problems with littering at the recycling stations.

We have tried to approach the litter issue from different angles in order to suggest

possible measures to reduce the problem. An important aspect proved to be uncertainties regarding the concept of operators.

As there are currently many parties involved in the collection process this lead to the issue of who is legally considered as the operator of the recycling stations. We discovered, when we studied the subject, that there had been some reorganization of FTI's activities, which we believe contributes to making the question of who is to be

    regarded as operators clearer.

We have also examined FTI's and the municipalities environmental offices’ approach to the problem. Overall, the survey shows that the degree of cooperation between FTI and the environmental offices is at a satisfactory level, but that there are differences in how the problem is perceived, particularly in regard to the cause of the litter.

Based on the investigation, we have come up with some suggestions for actions that may contribute to a reduction in litter and further enhance cooperation between the

    municipalities’ environmental offices and FTI.

Some conclusions we have reached are that EPA should provide clearer guidance on the question of what constitutes an appropriate collection and that the municipalities’ environmental offices should be invited to the consultations between FTI and the municipalities regarding the recycling stations on a regular basis.

Emissioner i nybyggda hus: Tidig användning av ventilationssystem2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

3D modellering av formningsviror1999Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]
Improvement of the 3D forming fabric-modeling program that Anders Werners master thesis, 3D Representation of forming fabrics, resulted in. Converting the existing 3D-program from MATLAB 4 to MATLAB 5. This applies particularly to handling images and dialog windows. Installation and file handling are programmed in the program language DOS. Developing 3d representation of the pattern TRIOTEX and DUOTOP TSS. Studying photos of cuts from forming fabrics to find how the pattern influences the thread position. Special calculation routines for DUOTOP TSS are developed. Handling graphic objects in 3D environment, using MATLABs functions for lights and surface. Developing graphic user interface in MATLAB 5. It gives prominence to how defective the representations are and make proposal of improvement. A list of references recommend further reading.
