No Laughing Matter: A study of the use of comedy in public service announcements2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a study which is intended to explore how public service announcements in broadcast media use humour as a method of conveying their core messages in a manner which is both memorable and persuasive; to consider why humour is chosen as a strategy; and to identify the similarities and differences in the use of humour in PSAs and commercial broadcast advertising. Six video commercials were analysed in total: three PSAs and three advertisements. The analysis identified semantic and stylistic features including metaphors, puns, idioms, vagueness, polysemes, homonyms, homographs and homophones, as well as visual metaphors. It continued on to investigate how PSAs contextualise their messages, applying Grice's co-operative principle, as well as the principles of relevance, as proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1986).

The results revealed that the PSAs examined appear to show the application of a range of linguistic devices that contribute to making their content humorous. Ambiguity, mostly generated by verbal and visual metaphors, vagueness and polysemy, appears to be the most common strategy for stimulating interest and engaging the viewer. It was observed that viewers must possess the ability to recover meaning through non-linguistic signifiers, such as body language, and through contextual cues. It was also established that similar linguistic devices tend to be used in the production of PSAs and advertisements to create humorous content, but to a different extent.

"Det är på det hela taget ett förbannadt språk vi ha": En analys av språk och stil i Hjalmar Söderbergs romaner i jämförelse med Peter Cassirers analys av Historietter2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Motives for Literacy: an investigation of adult illiterate students' motives for becoming literate.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim for this study was to investigate adult illiterate students’ motives for becoming literate. The study was conducted in an adult education institution in Sweden where I interviewed four participants learning how to read and write in a second language. All the informants were illiterate when they started school in Sweden and I wanted to investigate if there were differences in second language acquisition dependent on age, gender, motivation or motive.

Individual qualitative interviews were used in the method, based on grounded theory. The result showed no motive differences and all informants had the same motive as a goal; to obtain a job. Motivation, however, varied depending on age, but no gender differences could be found. According to this study, high motivation and a positive attitude are the most important factors for succeeding in the literacy work.

Learning and teaching vocabulary in a second language: Testing three distinct techniques2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate what technique is the most successful one when learning and teaching English vocabulary. Focus is on three distinct techniques: one focusing on writing, one involving pictures, and one that uses the concept of social interaction with tasks and exercises in groups.

To achieve results regarding the degree of success for each technique, three different lessons are planned and executed, each lesson designed according to one of the techniques. The pupils that are taught are three classes in year 7 at Östergårdsskolan, Halmstad. The students are given pre-tests, to see how much previous knowledge the students have, and an immediate post-test is also given after the lesson. Three weeks later, the same test is given to find out how much of the information had been transformed into long-term memory.

The results from the tests were summarized to see which class had learned the most words, and the results were discussed. Furthermore, interviews were held with four English teachers and 24 students, regarding their attitudes to vocabulary learning. These answers are also analyzed and discussed.

After the lessons had been conducted and the results processed, it was obvious that the class that had learned the most words was the class that used the method of writing. The problem was that this class had forgotten the biggest amount of words when looking at the delayed post-test, which leads to the conclusion that the method of writing only helps the information transfer into the short-term memory.

When analyzing the delayed post-test, it is visible that the class that remembered the biggest amount of words was the one that used the technique of images. Although they learned the least words during the lesson, they also remembered the most words after three weeks.

The conclusion drawn from this is that it is very useful for students to write the words down on paper, even though they already have them in their books. Using another sense, in this case writing, is a great way of transferring information into short-term memory. However, if the goal is for the students to remember the new vocabulary for a long time, the method of using images is the most effective one.

The Language of Advertising: A qualitative study of gender representation in print advertisements.2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to investigate and highlight the strengths and shortcomings of Critical Discourse Analysis and Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis when used as an analytical tool. By comparing the representation of women and men in print advertisements, and how there may be a difference in language being used to describe both genders, including the use of sexist language, a critique of CDA and FCDA could be established. In order to establish this all areas of the advertisements had to be taken into account, including layout and images used. The ads were read and interpreted through CDA and FCDA in order to investigate and identify the strengths, and any shortcomings, of the theories. The investigation shows that, although CDA and FCDA scholars could argue that women tended to be described in a more sexist manner overall, a counterargument could also be made on most accounts. The argument which supported sexism was especially observable through how women’s bodies were more often fragmented in images and positioned in more sexual positions, but also how the advertisements not only reinforced stereotypes as well as using distinctly negative language in their descriptions. However, gender stereotyping against men in the ads was also prevalent, which allowed an argument against CDA and FCDA’s theories about existing power struggles. Although the investigation did manage to substantiate the critique regarding how CDA and FCDA view the differences in gender representations, therefore fulfilling its aim, perhaps a more accurate result would have been possible to achieve if more print advertisements had been used in the investigation. However, this was not possible due to the qualitative nature of the investigation.

Idiomatic mastery in a first and second language2019Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The comprehension, retention and production of idiomatic expressions is one of the most difficult areas of the lexicon for second language (L2) learners, even very advanced students, to master. This book investigates this under-researched and interesting aspect of language acquisition, shedding light on both conventional uses of idiomatic expressions as well as creative variant forms. The chapters in the book delve into different aspects of idiomatic mastery: students’ comprehension of canonically used idioms in both their first and second language; the effects of multimedia and visualization techniques on learners’ comprehension and retention of L2 idioms; students’ misinterpretations of L2 idioms; L2 learners’ comprehension of creative idiom variants and their use of idioms in free composition writing.

Quantitative and qualitative aspects of advanced learners' L1 and L2 mastery of polysemous words2013Inngår i: Hermes - Journal of Language and Communication Studies, ISSN 0904-1699, E-ISSN 1903-1785, nr 51, s. 79-112Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the present investigation, 15 fi rst-term university students were faced with forty decontextualised polysemous words in English (L2) and Swedish (L1) respectively and asked to indicate which, of a set of six meanings, adhered to the item in question (two to fi ve of the meanings were correct). The polysemous words were of varying frequency. The investigation thus addresses the following research question: In quantitative and qualitative terms, what knowledge do advanced students have of polysemous words in their L2 as compared to their L1? Results show that most students have a relatively poor knowledge of polysemous words in both languages, especially in their L2. Furthermore, while the frequencies of the test items have no impact on the students’ achievements, the relative frequencies of the meanings of the test items and the number of meanings of each test item stand in direct relation to whether the item is known or not in both languages.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to systematize and advance the Systemic-FunctionalLinguistic method of analysing Ergativity such as it has potential to be employedfor linguistically oriented Critical Discourse Analysis. By applying the termMetaphor of Ergativity, and distinguishing and defining a variety of suchMetaphors, different realizations of Ergativity can be identified and categorized. The method is subsequently adopted for an analysis of a newspaper material. Theanalysis reveals that Ergativity is realized differently depending on which Agent isassociated with an Ergative process, and that different Metaphors of Ergativity tendto be used with slightly different functions. Such differences may carry significancefor Critical Discourse Analyses, and the method could therefore be a usefuladdition to future linguistically oriented Critical Discourse Analyses.

Conversational Rituals in Computer- Mediated Communication: A Qulaitative Study of Discussion Forums2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to offer a new perspective on both interpersonal communication andcomputer-mediated communication (CMC), by means of conducting a pragma-linguisticanalysis and comparison of a semi-threaded discussion forum and a fully threaded discussionforum; analysing features such as linguistic markers, dialogic listening, politeness, cooperation, elaborate or laconic greetings, farewell expressions and other conversational rituals. Aqualitative study was conducted, employing two methods of gathering data: (a) participantobservation and (b) document and material analysis. The major question for discussion in thisstudy is whether there are any differences with respect to linguistic and non-linguistic featuresbetween the semi-threaded and fully threaded forums? The study concludes that there aredifferences in linguistic and non-linguistic features between semi-threaded and fully threadedforums, but these differences are minimal and can more likely be attributed to the forum subjectmatter and social context than to the forum structure itself.

Testing the Cumulative Frequency Hypothesis with Multilinguals in Reading2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The non-selective and the cumulative frequency hypotheses offer competing explanations to the neurological origins of the cognate facilitation effect. Researchers have yet to establish which of these has the strongest empirical foundation, with important theoretical implications. This experiment tested the cumulative frequency hypothesis with 22 SwedishEnglish bilinguals in the eye-tracking paradigm. Data was gathered and analysed from sentence stimuli containing cognate and control words using mixed-effects statistical analysis. A significant interaction was found between Cognate Facilitation and Contextual Diversity in FFD. The results were inconclusive as regard to the dichotomy or symbiosis of non-selectivity and cumulative frequency as neurological phenomena. However, they did indicate the strong presence of cognate facilitation throughout both early and late stages of processing.

The Politician and the Accent: An interview study about students' perceptions of a politician speaking English with a Swedish accent2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Swedish speakers of English tend to speak with an accent, but the attitudes toward said accent is unknown. While a few studies have been made regarding listeners' perceptions of their own first language accents, the results varied and did not specifically adress English with a Swedish accent. In the present study of attitudes toward accent, listeners were Swedish, the spoken target language was English, and the speaker was a person in power. Eight informants of Swedish and English language backgrounds watched a video recording of Swedish politician Margot Wallström speaking English with a Swedish accent, after which they were asked questions regarding her accent and their perceptions and attitudes thereof. While the Swedish informants' attitudes were more negative and expressed that Wallström should be able to speak with less Swedish accent, the non-Swedes were more neutral and thought that the accent was expected and acceptable. The results suggest that Swedes have high expectations of their accents when speaking English, which is relevant for English speakers, especially public ones, with Swedish language backgrounds.

Elsa, William, Docka och Brunte: En studie av våra samtida hästnamn2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to establish a connection between the dystopian literary genres and crime novels with certain stylistic characteristics by doing a comparative study using two books marketed as dystopian: Stjärnklart by Lars Wilderäng (2015) and Den nya människan by Boel Bermann (2014), and two marketed as crime novels: Till offer åt Molok by Åsa larsson (2013) and Levande och döda i Winsford by Håkan Nesser (2014). This is done by analyzing stylistic characteristics described in Stil, stilistik & stilanalys by Peter Cassirer (2003), and Stilistik by Per Lagerholm (2015), that can be found on the lexical linguistic level.

The results of this investigation shows that there are certain stylistic characteristics that can be traced back to the dystopian genre through a qualitative analysis of the quantitative results gathered from the material. The authors individual writing styles has created issues reaching these conclusions, as they seem to dictate the largest differences in the use of certain stylistic strategies. Despite this there are consistent patterns in the quantitative results that facilitated the conclusions presented in this essay.

British or American English?: An investigation of awareness of the differences in British and American vocabulary and spelling2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

English has, for some time, been one of the core subjects in the Swedish Educational Establishment and the English teaching has successfully enhanced Swedish students’ knowledge and competence of the language. The differences between American and British English are rarely a subject for consideration though, and the aim in this essay is to investigate what abilities, if any, Swedish students possess in order to distinguish between American and British English spelling and vocabulary. This essay will contain a limited study, which includes a sample of 97 individuals who attend an upper secondary school in Halmstad. The results are gathered and analyzed with a quantitative method.

The conclusion suggests that Swedish students possess some abilities to distinguish between American and British English. However, none of the participants in the investigation were able to be consistent in their English use or stick to one specific variety of English. All participants mixed American and British English and they did so habitually.

Because of the limitation of the study, further research needs to be conducted in order to determine whether the findings in this investigation can be supported or not. Similar research could be conducted elsewhere in Sweden with a similar scope or with a broader perspective including pronunciation and grammar.

The use of semiotics and pragmatics in printed advertisements: How consumers make sense of advertisements in relation to established theories2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a study which is intended to explore how a well-known makeup company, M.A.C., uses semiotics and pragmatics in their advertisements and how the consumer’s reaction corresponds with what is proposed in the theories. Three printed advertisements were analyzed by the author and six qualitative interviews were conducted with Swedish women of different ages. The analysis of the advertisements identified semiotic and pragmatic features including linguistic and non-linguistic signs, cultural myths, metaphors, similes, pronouns, deixis, visual parallelism as well as the use of Relevance Theory such as enrichment. The results revealed that M.A.C. Cosmetics marketing strategies correlate to, or can be explained by, key theories within pragmatics and semiotics. The results of the interviews show that the majority of the interviewees react correspondingly with what is proposed in the Theoretical Background chapter and the research has validated the theories and confirmed them as useful and effective analytical tools for examining advertising texts. It was also established that the advertiser appears to be aware, consciously or not, of the cognitive processes involved in the interpretation of advertisements which Relevance Theory explains, such as enrichment.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Using English as a Lingua Franca at an International Company: A Study of the Communication Between Non-native English Speakers in a Swedish Workplace2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the communication in English and use of English at a Swedish company with employees from all over the world. The aim is to investigate how the employees experience speaking English with their colleagues and if they believe that misunderstandings can occur owing to their language differences.

The linguistic focus of this study is towards sociolinguistics, including lingua franca, language use and communication as well as a small portion of language acquisition, considering that the majority of employees do not speak English as their native language.

The results of the study have shown that all employees at the company speak English daily, but the experiences and opinions of it vary, mostly depending on which department they work in and what kind of education they have had previous to them working at the company.

Boys are from Mars, Girls are from Venus: A Study of the Linguistic Role of Gender in Swedish Classrooms2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This research aimed to find out whether or not linguistic theories on how men and women use language can be applied to boys and girls, and their language use, in two selected schools in Southern Sweden. The data was accumulated throughout field investigation. Five questions were created and six teachers from two selected schools were asked to read the questions and keep them in mind while observing them in their class for one week. They were asked to write the answers and hand them in within one week. When the data was accumulated I started to draw connections to already existing theories on how men and women use language and, I started to compare it with how boys and girls use language from these two schools. The answers from the six teachers that participated in this research were not diverse, and they corresponded with the theories cited in this essay’s literature review on how men and women use language. For instance, boys tend to use humor as a tool when they communicate in order to occupy the centre of attention just like men, while girls tend to be emotionally involved while communicating just like women. This is one example of many similarities that this research has found.

    Abstract [sv]

Manligt och kvinnligt språkbruk i podcastsamtal: Samtalsstrategier, avbrott, stödsignaler m.m.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Stil och kön i svenska bloggar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Cuisine Linguistics of British and American English: Are the culinary vocabularies of British and American English converging or diverging?2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study is intended to unveil whether the culinary vocabulary of British English and American English are likely to converge or diverge in the future, as a way of contributing to understanding the evolution of the English language and its varieties. The topic itself was founded in travels to America which were paired with nearly fifteen years of interaction with British English, leading to understanding that some (food) words come to have different meanings even in similar languages, and possibly also within the same language.  Understanding this led to the thesis question: Are the culinary vocabularies of British English and American English likely to converge or diverge?

This is an area of study which has seemingly been left untreated so far under the umbrella of Linguistics. As such, the research in this essay focuses on determining a future convergence or divergence between the language varieties from a language historical aspect as well as taking sociolinguistic aspects of language change into account. These aspects are fashion, foreign influence and social need. In addition to the research, a survey involving 15 British and 15 American students between the ages of 18 and 30 which helps determining the current interaction between the two language varieties. Through the research and analysis of these areas of interest, it is found that the culinary vocabularies of the two language varieties are unlikely to converge completely, but are in a state both of constant partial convergence and divergence.

    Still the same? – Self-identity dilemmas when living with post-stroke aphasia in a digitalised society2019Inngår i: Aphasiology, ISSN 0268-7038, E-ISSN 1464-5041Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Self-identity construction through “stories of self” is highly relevant for people with aphasia, not only because the onset entails a “biographical disruption” but also since their ability to keep their “stories of self” going is reduced. Three dilemmas (constancy/change, sameness/difference and agency/dependency) are known to be central to identity. In a digitalised society like Sweden, self-identity construction, including the navigation of these dilemmas, takes place both online and offline. Nevertheless, research combining aphasia, identity and online issues is scarce.

Aim: This qualitative study aims, in terms identity dilemmas, to investigate self-identity construction in working-age persons living with post-stroke aphasia in a digitalised society (i.e. Sweden). Are the dilemmas relevant to the participants, and if so, how do they navigate them online and offline?

Methods and Procedures: Nine individuals (three men and six women, aged 24–54 at onset) with mild or moderate post-stroke aphasia participated. The data comprises nine individual audio-recorded interviews and 1,581 screenshots from online observations. Qualitative analyses were performed (vertically and horizontally), combining inductive and deductive approaches.

Outcomes and Results: All three dilemmas are relevant to the participants. They construct their self-identity as both the same as they were pre-stroke and changed. They are both the same and different in relation to other stroke survivors (with or without aphasia), i.e. both “disabled” and “normal”. They display both dependency and agency. Thus, they navigate the dilemmas by constantly negotiating what to include in their stories of self. In addition, telling one story of self offline does not imply telling the same story online.

Conclusion: The dilemmas are intertwined and highly relevant to the participants. Offline and online settings evoke different ways for them to navigate the dilemmas. Increased awareness of the possible struggle with self-identity dilemmas in people with aphasia, and the possible difference between their online and offline self-identities, should be of value to family members, clinicians and researchers. Further research based on a larger sample is suggested.

Does Gender Influence the Way People Provide and Receive Politeness?: A Research Study on the Differences or Similarities Between Gender and Linguistic Politeness2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the relation between gender and adherence to Brown and Levinson's Politeness Principle. Women and men tend to use language for different purposes and for the purpose of achieving various goals. In order to examine this relation, a research study was conducted. Two women and three men were observed discussing subjects given by an interviewer. The collected interview data gathered from the conversation was analyzed and related to the Politeness Principle. Aspects from sociolinguistics, such as theories from gender and language studies, and the Cooperative Principle as proposed by H P Grice, were also considered and formed part of the analysis. The results indicate that there is a small difference between women’s versus men’s adherence to the Politeness Principle. More specifically, women tend to use more aspects of linguistic politeness. However, as the sample group of the research study consisted of only five participants, the limits of the study in terms of the generalizability of the results are recognized and suggestions have been made for further research.

Swedish Second Language Learners’ Ability to Pronounce English Contrastive Consonant Phonemes2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate sixth form students’ pronunciation, and their

exposure to English during their English lessons in school. The focus of the study is to

investigate whether or not the students have problems with pronouncing the contrastive

consonant phonemes that do not exist, or are rarely used in the Swedish language

    (i.e /z/).

In order to investigate the students’ pronunciation, questionnaires were handed out,

followed by a reading exercise that was recorded. Also, a questionnaire was handed out

to the students’ teachers in order to investigate their thoughts about the importance of

teaching pronunciation. The participating students and teachers in this essay were

chosen from a school in the south-west part of Sweden.

The results in this essay show that the majority of the students participating had

difficulties pronouncing the English consonant phonemes which do not exist, or are

rarely used, in Swedish i.e /z/, /tʃ/ and /dʒ/. Furthermore, the results in this essay show

that the students are more likely to pronounce English words with consonant phonemes

similar to those used in Swedish.

Critically Analysing Newspaper Discourse: A Study of Representation of Ideological Approaches in British Broadsheet Newspapers2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This is a linguistic study that focuses on language use in four British newspapers that are well known in Britain for their political positions. The main aim of this essay is to compare and con-trast different British newspapers in order to show how meaning is created and to identify any differences, depending on the discourse. To do this, specific theoretical frameworks have been applied, including critical discourse analysis, semantics, pragmatics and stylistics in the analysis of a number of different British newspapers.

The analysis has shown that most of the interactions are used in all of the articles. Journalists have expressed many of the same arguments in their articles. The analysis showed that the arti-cles had many features in common and they require the reader to have a general political aware-ness as well as an understanding of the political leanings of the respective publications. It was discovered that the main difference in the articles is that they deviate from one another in how they present, interpret and relay topical and potentially controversial issues according to their leanings. The articles refer to the same stories and rely upon the same sources, but they pursue different angles, for example on national security, heritage and identity. These different ap-proaches mostly depend on the newspapers' and individual journalists' political leanings. There is a difference in which discoursal features, such as hegemony and subject positioning, are used, where they occur in the text and how frequently they occur. The determining factor for these differences appears to be, however, the nature of the topic and issues surrounding it rather than particular political affiliations of those responsible for producing it.

Namnets betydelse för den kulturella identiteten hos flerspråkiga gymnasieelever2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Individuals or families migrating between countries and starting a new life abroad has been a constant throughout human history. Sometimes, the migrants have children in the new host country; usually these children are then raised bilingually. Earlier studies show that in these cases, the children usually receive names common either in the country where they were raised, or the one(s) their parents migrated from. However, these studies typically do not analyse how this naming choice would affect second-generation individuals later in life, despite names being one of the earliest ways for individuals to form a cultural identity.

The study aims to determine how the names of bilingual high school students tie together with which names they would give their hypothetical children, using a survey aimed at such students living in Halmstad, Sweden. The names of both students and their hypothetical children were categorised as “marked” or “unmarked”, judging by how many by similar names were born in Sweden, both during the years 1998-2000 and 2016-18.

Out of the students that answered the survey, 45 of them were bilingual; out of them, 80% had “marked” first names, i.e. names which would be seen as unusual/foreign in Sweden. However, they suggested a total of 79 names for their future children, and out of those suggestions, 70% would be considered “marked” – a decrease of 10 percent, despite the larger name pool involved. There was also a notable difference in naming habits based on gender: very few of the students with “unmarked” names were male, but the surveyed group suggested a balanced amount of female and male unmarked names for their own children.
