    Abstract [sv]

Prayer in Peasant Communities: Ideals and Practices of Prayer in the Late Medieval Ecclesiastical Province of Uppsala, Sweden2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to identify, explain and delineate praying among peasant communities in the ecclesiastical province of Uppsala, Sweden. Four aspects have been examined through the perspectives of ideals and practices, namely the standards of prayer, devotional prayer, prayer in times of need and prayer cultures. The standards of prayer considered the physical and mental behaviour of the praying peasant woman or man. The most ordinary way to act during prayer was to stand with hands together, palm against palm, and to pray in the vernacular often using mental themes to enhance the devotion. Devotional prayers were foremost the three ‘standard’ prayers Paternoster, Hail Mary and Apostolic Creed, and could be used separately or combined. Prayer in times of need was possibly considered a matter of praying to saints, something that cannot be proven to have been either practiced or recommended on other, ordinary occasions where God and the Virgin Mary were considered the proper recipients of prayer. A few authentic prayers exist that were possibly said by peasant women and men in connection with miracles and these show the ability to construct elaborate prayers and to propose businesslike agreements with saints. These three prayers were required knowledge for a peasant woman or man and were put to the test in order to become a godparent, and were therefore made available in the vernacular by the parish priests. Ways to maintain the prayer cultures were through mnemonic techniques, and indulgences stipulating and confirming prayers used or to be used in connection with certain churches, days and places within the churches. Name saints could also be used, since the person and the name saint were considered to have a special bond. Prayer could also be used as protection for the living; since a prayer was considered to generate either merits or favours from a celestial patron to his or her client. The prayer life of those belonging to peasant communities was both elaborate and full of nuances.

To Explore the Divine Will in Prayer2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How were holy persons selected as recipients for prayer? Most often, miracle stories only tell of the praying person having already made the decision of recipient, but there were exceptions from this pattern: the habit of casting lots to explore the divine will of whom to address in prayer. Lot casting, a seldom studied religious habit will be in focus in my paper.

“I’d Rather Be a Boy Any Day”: Gender Roles in Carson McCullers’s The Heart is a Lonely Hunter2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay explores gender roles in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) by American author Carson McCullers. Theories and texts by Judith Butler, Nancy Chodorow, Raewyn Connell, Don Zimmerman, and Candice West among others, are used to support the thesis statement that stereotypical gender norms serve to compromise the main character Mick Kelly’s identity formation and her early sexual experiences. One important element of this discussion is the idea that gender is socially constructed rather than biologically given. Moreover, it is argued that gender is something that a person does repeatedly according to a strict set of socially constructed regulations. Based on the premise that gender is performativity, the conclusion is drawn that Mick Kelly’s ability to create her own identity within her gender-free world of music is severely diminished. In short, adherence to conventional gender norms makes her go from being a loner to being socially accepted as an equal among her peers; and from being a leader to being a follower, especially regarding her sexual relations.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine in what way the protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield, represses his own sexuality and how this affects his relationship to men and women. With the aid of psychoanalytic theory and gender theory, the essay strives to determine how Holden Caulfield relates to traditional gender roles, the causes of Holden Caulfield’s repressed sexuality, and how Holden Caulfield’s repressed sexuality manifests itself.

    Abstract [sv]

Life in the Labyrinth: A Reflexive Exploration of Research and Politics2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about exploring the politics within and around research. The starting point is a European project which ran from late 1997 to the end of 2000. It was called "Self-employment activities concerning women and minorities: their success or failure in relation to social citizenship policies" and had as its objective to provide the EU-Commission with recommendations for improved self-employment policies. Background material was complemented by interviews with "experts", but the main source of information was in the form of biographical interviews with the self-employed, or formerly self-employed, themselves. The qualitative method was used as a way of researching how individuals' background and experiences influenced their decision to become self-employed as well as their tendency to use labour market policies available for starting businesses. It was also a way to find out how those policies impacted on the individuals' lives. The consequent recommendations included a suggestion for broadening existing policies to comprise social aspects as well as financial allowances, and also the caution that self-employment was perhaps not the best solution to labour market and social exclusion.

This latter doubt arose during project work, as did questions about methodology, the role of the researcher, and eventually about the politics that inform research. Only briefly touched upon in the project reports, these issues instead became the basis for the thesis. A reflexive rereading of the Final Report led to a critical examination of the political uses of concepts and categories, of how stereotypes affect research, and of the embeddedness in ethnocentric discourses of both research and researcher. The use of postcolonial and feminist theory, discourse analysis and a social constructionist perspective broadened the analytical possibilities and furthered understanding of the connections between politics and research. A conclusion is that a comprehensive change in the social order as well as in people's conscience is required to stem ethnic discrimination in society and the perpetuation of stereotypes and preconstructed categories in research.

The Da Vinci Project: - A theoretical approach to language learning2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The English language could be considered to be a second language in Swedish society; it is present in more than just school, such as television, the world of computers and radio. The general field of interest for this study is an exchange between two schools, one located in Sweden and one in Italy, called the Da Vinci Project. The aim of the study is to get an insight into the effects on language development for the students participating in the project. The study focuses on exposure and error-feedback. The information was gathered using both interviews and questionnaires with students and teachers and I had the opportunity to visit the students when attending the school in Italy. Visiting the school in Italy made it easier to understand both the Italian and the Swedish students’ experience of a different school system than they were accustomed to. The results have been analyzed and it was possible to draw conclusions concerning the students’ language development as a result of meeting different teaching methods in the different school systems. The teachers’ answers provided important information about different teaching methods. Using theoretical approach to second language acquisition the results have been analyzed. Stephen Krashen’s monitor model has been an important component in analyzing the results. The results of the survey showed that the Da Vinci Project involves two totally different school systems using different methods when focusing on error-feedback and exposure. A “gap” was found between the two schools but the results of this survey show that for some students it has been their second language, English, has improved through the exchange. While a few students, in the Da Vinci Project, believe that they have not developed in their second language.

    Abstract [sv]

The Constant Butler: Role Strain and Role Confusion in Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Although various approaches to psychotherapy have been applied to The Remains of the Day in the aforementioned analyses, none have linked it to Role Theory, as defined in the context of Psychodrama. However if the abnormal importance that Stevens attributes to becoming a perfect butler is taken into account, The Remains of the Day is practically saturated with textual evidence of how social role imbalance is the source of Stevens’ dilemmas both in the narrated and the narrating time. Although whether it was Ishiguro’s intention to create this effect is unclear, the setting of the novel in a world that is transitioning from the war eras to modernity moreover fits in all too well with the sociological aspects of Role Theory. In brief, it has been proposed that changes in society that render certain social roles obsolete put pressure on the individuals that hold these roles to either adapt or renew themselves in pace with societal developments. Stevens, being a butler, would have felt such strain acutely, being that the decline of the great British houses over the aforementioned period led to a sharp decline in domestic service professions at the time. (Lee, 1988)Drawing upon both the Psycho-dramatic and the Sociologic aspects of Role Theory, this paper aims first of all to propose that Ishiguro’s main character in The Remains of the Day suffers from an over-developed occupational role, which has eliminated or at the very least marginalized his other social roles. Secondly it will argue that the latter’s’ reflections that are brought about over the course of the plot are a consequence of role strain, which as a palpable yet indirect plot element forces him realize that his occupational role is slowly but steadily becoming a thing of the past. In facing such a fate, he is in turn forced to confront how his extreme commitment to his job has left the rest of his life empty, for which he begins to look back at and reconsider the roles that he could have had but neglected in life. On top of outlining this approach to rationalizing the events of the novel, the paper will theorize upon that in choosing to tell such a story, Ishiguro is promoting a view of the world as a place in constant motion, in which, like the post-modernist perspective, there are no set or universal values that withstand the test of time. Juxtaposed against the satirical undertones of the novel, as well as against the time period in which it is set, this statement will in turn be interpreted as critique against the destructive qualities of conventions in society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Everything Is Connected to Everything Else: An Ecocritical and Psychological Approach to Jane Urquhart's The Stone Carvers2013Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nature is everywhere. Every day we have contact with it. Still, many of us do not realize how important it is for our survival. Descriptions of nature have always been present in novels. However, recently the aspect of nature in literature, as well as in other disciplines, has been dealt with in a slightly different way. As a result, an ecocritical approach to literature has been favoured. This essay shows nature's impact on the characters in Jane Urquhart's The Stone Carvers. Using this novel as an example, I start by studying how the concept of nature is often constructed through opposition. I then move on to show how stereotypical boundaries between nature and human beings may be challenged. Finally I study how nature function as a healing agent in The Stone Carvers. In my studies I combine the theories of ecocriticism with a psychoanalytical perspective through the concept of abjection.

    Abstract [en]

Gustave Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant were friends and realist authors who wanted to describe the totality of society as artisans rather than artists. In doing so both of them used  the way their characters dressed to discover society, the stratification in society and the characters in their literary work. However, in spite of their will to work as artisans they were stylistically prominent with styles precise and elaborated. From a socio-critical point of view this essay tries to understand:

    • How the out-fit unveils the social position of the characters.
    • How the out-fit unveils the story and psychology of the characters.
    • How the out-fit symbolises the characters in a wider literary context.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is a study of three fiction novels by the Swedish author Amanda Svensson: Hey Dolly (2008), Välkommen till den här världen (2011) and Allt det där jag sa till dig var sant (2014). A unified theme for the novels is identity making where the three young female protagonists try different identities and explore who they are. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate in which ways the protagonists explore their identities and how this is expressed. Gender theory and genre theory are used when analyzing the characters in the novels.

In the analysis it becomes clear that the protagonists explore their identities in different ways. The three young women are aware of that they live in a society in which male and female gender stereotypes exist. In some cases they adjust to the gender roles but in many cases they also observe the gender stereotypes and problematize them. Therefore the protagonists sometimes differ from how a stereotype woman is portrayed.

Transhumanism: En studie av biomodifikation och makt i "Robocop" och "Gattaca"2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
