Inblick i en annan livsvärld: Att belysa omvårdnadsåtgärder vid positiva symtom hos patienter med schizofreni.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Schizophrenia is a complex disease including positive symptoms, such as for example delusions and auditory hallucinations. This group of patients can be difficult for nurses to reach. The condition entails patient exclusion and stigmatization, also an increased risk of suicide. People with schizophrenia have shown insufficient compliance in drug treatment, which in turn can negatively affect care. Previous research shows a need for increased knowledge to achieve better efficacy in the treatment of these patients. Therefore, the specific aim of this study is to illustrate the care activities in case of positive symptoms in schizophrenia. Four databases were searched and the searches resulted in 18 articles. The results showed that individualized care, based on the patient's life-world, is essential to reach the patient and thus to identify the most beneficial care activities. Patients with positive symptoms need support from nurses to find strategies to cope with these. With the support of this study, nurses can support patients to find these coping strategies. Behavior that is commonly considered destructive is not necessarily negative, it can also be a coping strategy for patients with positive symptoms in schizophrenia.

A Role for the Non-Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Abl2/Arg in Experimental Neuroinflammation2018In: Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology, ISSN 1557-1890, E-ISSN 1557-1904, Vol. 13, no 2, p. 265-276Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Multiple sclerosis is a neuroinflammatory degenerative disease, caused by activated immune cells infiltrating the CNS. The disease etiology involves both genetic and environmental factors. The mouse genetic locus, Eae27, linked to disease development in the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model for multiple sclerosis, was studied in order to identify contributing disease susceptibility factors and potential drug targets for multiple sclerosis. Studies of an Eae27 congenic mouse strain, revealed that genetic variation within Eae27 influences EAE development. The Abl2 gene, encoding the non-receptor tyrosine kinase Arg, is located in the 4,1 megabase pair long Eae27 region. The Arg protein plays an important role in cellular regulation and is, in addition, involved in signaling through the B- and T-cell receptors, important for the autoimmune response. The presence of a single nucleotide polymorphism causing an amino acid change in a near actin-interacting domain of Arg, in addition to altered lymphocyte activation in the congenic mice upon immunization with myelin antigen, makes Abl2/Arg a candidate gene for EAE. Here we demonstrate that the non-synonymous SNP does not change Arg’s binding affinity for F-actin but suggest a role for Abl kinases in CNS inflammation pathogenesis by showing that pharmacological inhibition of Abl kinases ameliorates EAE, but not experimental arthritis. © 2018 The Author(s)

Bemötandet av patienter med psykisk ohälsa2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sjuksköterskans attityder gentemot homosexualitet: - ur ett patientperspektiv2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Improved tracking performance of lagrangian block-matching methodologies using block expansion in the time domain: In silico, phantom and invivo evaluations2014In: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, ISSN 0301-5629, E-ISSN 1879-291X, Vol. 40, no 10, p. 2508-2520Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to evaluate tracking performance when an extra reference block is added to a basic block-matching method, where the two reference blocks originate from two consecutive ultrasound frames. The use of an extra reference block was evaluated for two putative benefits: (i) an increase in tracking performance while maintaining the size of the reference blocks, evaluated using in silico and phantom cine loops; (ii) a reduction in the size of the reference blocks while maintaining the tracking performance, evaluated using in vivo cine loops of the common carotid artery where the longitudinal movement of the wall was estimated. The results indicated that tracking accuracy improved (mean - 48%, p<0.005 [in silico]; mean - 43%, p<0.01 [phantom]), and there was a reduction in size of the reference blocks while maintaining tracking performance (mean - 19%, p<0.01 [in vivo]). This novel method will facilitate further exploration of the longitudinal movement of the arterial wall. (C) 2014 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology.

Har du mens eller?: Kvinnors erfarenheter av att leva med PMS2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Premenstrual syndrome, also known as PMS, is a phenomenon that is estimated to effect 20-30% of all menstruating women. The premenstrual symptoms appear in the lutheal phase of the menstrual cycle and usually recurs monthly. The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of women with premenstrual syndrome. This study is conducted as a literature study, based on ten scinentific articles. Three major themes were identified from the results of the articles. The results of the literature study illustrates that women often experience disbelief when they try to describe their premenstrual experiences. The disbelief often occurs in relation to describing PMS to partners, co-workers and health care professionals. The study also shows that there is a great ignorance about PMS and the phenomenon is often portrayed negatively and ridiculed. Many women described the value of getting to talk about their premenstrual experiences without being judged and met with disbelief. It is of great importance that through education develops the nursing care and increase awareness among health care professionals about female phenomena such as PMS. To help women relieve the suffering the premenstrual symptoms can cause, it is important that further research is conducted.

Omvårdnadsåtgärder i relation till urinvägsinfektion2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When safety at handover fails, devastating consequences may be the result. Intensive and surgical care is conducted in highly technological environments which leaves the patient in exposed situations. In handover cases like this, safety aspects are highly important. The purpose of this literature review was to thoroughly describe the patient safety in handover between intensive care units and surgical units. In this study, 14 scientific articles have been reviewed and the conclusion of this work is that communication between intensive care units and surgical units was greatly improved by means of using a structured hand over tool. The immediate work environment also affects the handover, and disturbing elements such as alarms going off contributed to negative side effects at the handover. The teamwork was improved by using shared medical records to better plan the pre and post-operative care. Some of the studies questioned the level of education in communication skills and teamwork. Additional research on the subject is sought for, mostly by Scandinavian countries and especially Sweden. Additional research concerning hand over tools ought to be interesting for the future in order to map the actual utilization of these tools during handover.

Patienters upplevelser av att leva med dialysbehandling vid kronisk njursvikt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, people are getting older and sicker. The amount of people with diabetes and high blood pressure is gradually increasing, which will ultimately lead to a higher number of people diagnosed with chronic renal failure. The quality of life affects patients living with chronic kidney disease and dialysis treatment. It’s important that the nurse observes the patients life situation to adapt nursing to each individual’s needs. The purpose of the literature review was to portray patients experiences of living with dialysis treatment when living with chronic renal failure. The result consists of 13 articles. Three themes were revealed: the changes of life, the social life and life as a patient. The result showed that patients experienced various barriers and opportunities of the treatment. Dialysis treatment restricts the daily life of the patient but is considered as a lifeline. Dialysis treatment may influence the career, opportunities to travel and social relationships. Patients felt that they often end up in a position of dependence to the dialysis treatment and their relatives. The experiences of care were mostly positive and the nurse had an important role. The literature review can be used to shed light on patients experiences of living with dialysis treatment.

Smärtbedömning hos patienter med demenssjukdom2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Approximately 200 000 Swedes have been diagnosed with heart failure, which means that it´s one of the most common diagnosis in health care. Heart failure is a condition with severe symptoms and high mortality. Quality of life (QOL) is affected by the individual´s physical and psychological health, level of independence, social relationships and events in the environment. The aim of the study was to describe factors that affect the QOL in people with severe heart failure. The literature review included 13 articles, 12 quantitative and one qualitative constituted the basis for the result. The heart failures severity, symptom burden, comorbidity and limited autonomy were factors that influenced the QOL negatively. Positive factors were good social support and ability to maintain good spirits despite a difficult situation. The conclusion was that the greater impact heart failure had on daily life, the poorer QOL. Factors that affect daily life and therefore QOL was: overall symptom burden, autonomy and the extent of the gap between expectations and reality. The multi-professional team and the tradition of person-centered approach, significant for palliative care, would benefit people with severe heart failure who has the most impaired QOL. Heart failure creates physical, psychological, social and spiritual suffering and is the reason why people with heart failure should be offered palliative care. To get a holistic view of QOL in severe heart failure more qualitative research is needed.

Construct validity and test-retest reliability of a rotational maximum strength test and rotational power test in 1080 Quantum2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Explosive rotational movements are parts of many sports such as golf, tennis and baseball. Rotational strength and power tests exist, but valid and reliable tests to measure standing rotational strength and standing rotational power are lacking. 1080 Quantum is a machine wich can measure, speed, force and power and has several different resistance modes was used for testing rotational power and strength in this study. Aim: The aim was to investigate the validity and reliability of two new standing Quantum rotational tests; one measuring maximal rotational strength (1RM) and one measuring rotational power. Methods: Fifteen subjects, 8 men and 7 women, with at least one year of experience of resistance training participated in the study. The two new tests were: the Quantum power rotational test (PRT) and the Quantum 1RM rotational test (1RMRT). Testing occured during two sessions and during the first session construct validity of the two new rotational tests was assessed with a standing medicine ball throw (MB) and a sitting rotational power test (SRT). During the second session PRT and 1RMRT were tested for test-retest reliability. To study construct validity á priori hypothesis were stated and data were analyzed with Spearman´s correlation coefficent (rs). Intra correaltion coefficient (ICC) was used for test-retest reliability for PRT and 1RMRT. Results: Priori hypotheses were all fullfilled. Correlations found were considered good between PRT and MB (rs=0.80), moderate between PRT and SRT (rs=0.52), excellent between 1RMRT and MB (rs=0.90), moderate between 1RMRT and SRT (rs=0.73) and good between PRT and 1RMRT (rs=0.81). Excellent test-retest reliability was found for PRT (ICC=0.94, 95% CI (0.80-0.99)) and 1RMRT (ICC=0.98, 95% CI (0.92-0.99)) Conclusion: The two new rotational tests performed in 1080 Quantum both assessed construct validity and test-retest reliability. PRT can be used to measure standing rotational power and 1RMRT can be used to measure standing rotational maximum strength.

Daily life for young adults who care for a person with mental illness: a qualitative study2012In: Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, ISSN 1351-0126, E-ISSN 1365-2850, Vol. 19, no 7, p. 610-617Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study describes the daily life and management strategies of young informal carers of family members or friends with mental illness. Twelve young adults (three men and nine women; 16-25 years old) in Sweden were voluntarily recruited between February and May 2008. Data collected through eight individual semi-structured interviews and one focus group interview were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The findings revealed nine subthemes that were further grouped into three main themes: showing concern, providing support and using management strategies. Participants lived in constant readiness for something unexpected to happen to the person they cared for, and their role in the relationship could change quickly from family member or friend to guardian or supervisor. Supporting a friend was considered as large a personal responsibility as supporting a family member. Their management strategies were based on individual capacities and their ability to step aside should the situation become too demanding. These young informal carers need support in caring for the mentally ill. As the internet becomes increasingly fundamental to daily life, support could be provided most effectively through person-centred web sites.

Need and Usage of Different Kind of Support among Young Informal Carers of Persons with Mental Illness2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The high prevalence of mental illness among young person’s means that their relatives and close friends are exposed to stress by having to take on the responsibility for the support of family members or friends in difficult situations of life when suffering from mental illness. Young informal carers have shown to be exposed to a great burden in which they put their own daily tasks aside in order to stay close to the person who suffers from mental illness. Objective: Explore how young (16–25) informal carers of a person with a mental illness experience and use different kind of support, such as web-support, counseling, and group counseling, friends, family, relatives support societies, health care services etc. Method: In a mixed method approach, we first interviewed 12 young carers, and 241 completed a self-administered questionnaire. While the young carers strive to maintain control, their main support seems to be others in their lives, who often define the situation differently. Results: The carers said web-support, counseling, and group counseling might be helpful, yet very few had any professional support. The results also showed that the young informal carers’ safety net is their social network and the person who suffer from mental illness. Conclusion: Young informal carers are in need of a combination of web-based and face-to-face person-centered support, but they do not receive it. Professional support is required. Further studies about the needs of young informal carers of persons with mental illness especially those supporting friends, is necessary to gain before planning to start support interventions for them.

Effectiveness of web-based versus folder support interventions for young informal carers of persons with mental illness: a randomized controlled trial2014In: Patient Education and Counseling, ISSN 0738-3991, E-ISSN 1873-5134, Vol. 94, no 3, p. 362-371Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Compare the impact of two interventions, a web-based support and a folder support, for young persons who care for people who suffer from mental illness.

Methods: This study was a randomized control trial, following the CONSORT statements, which compared the impact of two interventions. Primary outcome variable was stress, and secondary outcome variables were caring situation, general self-efficacy, well-being, health, and quality of life of young informal carers (N = 241). Data were collected in June 2010 to April 2011, with self-assessment questionnaires, comparing the two interventions and also to detect changes.

Results: The stress levels were high in both groups at baseline, but decreased in the folder group. The folder group had improvement in their caring situation (also different from the web group), general self-efficacy, well-being, and quality of life. The web group showed increase in well-being.

Conclusion: Young informal carers who take on the responsibility for people close to them; suffer consequences on their own health. They live in a life-situation characterized by high stress and low wellbeing. This signals a need for support.

Practice implications: The non-significant differences show that each intervention can be effective, and that it depends upon the individual's preferences. This highlights the importance of adopting person-centered approach, in which young persons can themselves choose support strategy. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effectiveness of Web-Based versus Folder Support Interventions for Young Informal Carers of Persons with Mental Illness: a Randomized Controlled Trial2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Changes in psychiatric services mean more young persons have to care for a mentally ill family member or friend while they themselves are in the sensitive transition to adulthood.

Objective: Compare the impact of two interventions, a web-based support and a folder support, for young persons who care for people who suffer from mental illness.

Method: This study was a randomized control trial, following the CONSORT statements and eConsort support. Primary outcome variable was stress, and secondary outcome variables were caring situation, general self-efficacy, well-being, health, and quality of life of young informal carers (N=241). Data were collected in June 2010 to April 2011, with self-assessment questionnaires three times, four months apart, comparing the two interventions and also to detect changes.

Results: The result showed that stress levels were high in both groups at baseline, but decreased significantly in the folder group. The folder group had significant improvement in their caring situation (also significantly different from the web group), general self-efficacy, well-being, and quality of life. The web group show significant increase in well-being.

Conclusion: Young informal carers who take on the responsibility for people close to them with mental illness; suffer consequences on their own health. They live in a life-situation characterized by high stress and low well-being. This signals a need for support for these young persons.

Clinical relevance: The findings in this study are uniquely valuable because of the target group and the comparison of two different interventions to support them. The non-significant differences in the data show that each intervention can be effective, and that it depends upon the individual’s preferences. This highlights the importance of adopting person-centred approach, in which young persons can themselves choose support strategy

The impact of a person-centred web-based intervention on young informal carers of people with mental illness2015In: Abstracts: 19th International Philosophy of Nursing Society (IPONS) conference August 24-26, 2015 Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden: Technology, Health Care and Person-centeredness: Beyond Utopia and Dystopia. Thinking the Future., Stockholm: Karolinska Institutet , 2015, p. 4-5Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research show that young person’s often take responsibility and offer care and support for significant others who suffer from mental illness. This adoption of responsibility has consequences not only for the mentally ill, but also for the carer. A person-centred support approach to provide the young informal carers of what they are in need of is according to previous research essential, and in need of. As the internet becomes increasingly fundamental to young people in their daily lives, person-centred web-based interventions may be effective in supporting those caring for a person with mental illness.

Objective: To analyze (according to stress, burden, quality of life, and self-efficacy) the impact of a person-centred web-based intervention (information, education, and support) for young persons who support family members or close friends with mental illness.

Methods: The study design was prospective and randomized. The sample consisted of young informal carers (N = 241; 16–25 y), where N = 241 completed structured questionnaires at baseline and were allocated to person-centred web-based support (N = 121) respectively folder support (n =120) regarding available support in the society for young persons who support someone suffering from mental illness.

Results: Data show that the stress levels were high in both groups at the start of the intervention, but decreased in the folder group, who also showed improvements in their caring situation (also different from the web-support group), general self-efficacy, well-being and their quality of life. The group who received person-centred web-based support showed significant increase in their well-being.

Conclusion: It is of great importance to measure the stress and caring situation of young informal carers of persons with mental illness in order to understand their situation. One type of support could be person-centred web-based, however our results indicate that individuals seek support depending on their individual preferences. Since the responsibility of care has shifted from the health care services to the family and friends of the person suffering from a mental illness, more person- centred care/support interventions should be investigated for further development.

    Abstract [en]

This study compared the caring situation, health, self-efficacy, and stress of young (16–25) informal carers (YICs) supporting a family member with mental illness with that of YICs supporting a friend. A sample of 225 carers, assigned to a family group (n = 97) or a friend group (n = 128) completed the questionnaire. It was found that the family group experiences a lower level of support and friends experienced a lower positive value of caring. No other differences in health, general self-efficacy and stress were found. YICs endure different social situations, which is why further study of the needs of YICs, especially those supporting friends, is urgently needed.

    Abstract [en]

Child Health Nurses meet many parents with questions about infant´s food introduction, one of the child health nurse´s tasks is to educate parents on nutrition issues. Studies have shown that parents feel that they get different advice from Child Health Nurses, which can make them uncertain about which advice to follow. The aim of this pilot-study was to describe Child Health Nurse´s experiences of giving nutrition advice to parents at the introduction of solid foods to infants. Four interviews were conducted with Child Health Nurses within Child Health Servicesin Region Halland. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the text. The result of the pilot study shows that the Child Health Nurses felt that they gave good nutrition information to the parents related to structural factors of importance in food introduction and family resources and needs at food introduction. A future full-scale survey in the field could provide a basis for structural changes within the Child Health Services and enhanced educational initiatives for both Child Health Nurses and Child Health Nurse students.

Vilken av stretchingmetoderna statisk stretching, dynamisk stretching och proprioceptiv neuromuskulär facilitering är mest effektiv för att öka rörligheten i hamstrings?- en litteraturstudie2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Anestesisjuksköterskans omvårdnadsstrategier i samband med patienters oro inför generell anestesi2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

It is well-known that patients feel anxious about general anesthesia and that makes a problem in the nursing of anesthesia. Studies made over decades show that over 80% of the patients undergoing operation feel anxious about general anesthesia. Patients feel anxious about to lose control, wake up during the operation, never wake up, to get a needle and to wait long. The anesthesia nurse sees the patient at the first time in the preoperative meeting and have to identify anxiety and plan the nursing strategies in a few minutes. This lead to a large need of adequate nursing strategies which can mitigate patients anxiety. The aim of this study was to describe nursing strategies preoperative to mitigate patients anxiety before general anesthesia. The study has a descriptive qualitative design and semi structured interviews were used to collect data. The study was based on four working anesthesia nurses in a hospital in the west of Sweden. After the analysis two categories were identified to describe the nursing strategies to ease the patients anxiety before operation. The results of the study can get around and add the consciousness to use different nursing strategies. This could in turn conduct to help patients ease the preoperative anxiety before general anesthesia.

När återhämtar patienten sig snabbast?: Jämförlse mellan inhalationsanestesi och total intravenös anestesi.2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

General anesthesia includes both inhalations anesthesia and total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). After any anesthetic technique a de sirable characteristics is a predictably rapid emergence and sustained alertness. There is a clinical and scientific debate about which anesthetic technique who gives the most rapid emergence in the early postoperative recovery. The aim of this study was to compare patients early postoperative recovery after inhalations anesthesia and after total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). The methods are based on 15 research articles. They where analysized from the questionnaire: which anesthetic technique gives the most rapid emergence in the early postoperative recovery. The results showed that inhalations anesthesia gave the most rapid emergence in the earky postoperative recovery. The nurse anesthetist handling, planning and experience affect the patients awakening. Therefore further research instead could compare these anesthetic techniques in another way. The time after the nurse anesthetist has extubate the patient until the patient is adequate orientated, could be measured to find a more comparable result.

Soccer players’ agility skills depending on their position on the field2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Soccer players, independent of positions, perform high-intensity movements such as agility for short periods and have longer periods of low-intensity and rest during a soccer game. Agility is considered to be dependent on perceptional and decision-making factors and physical factors related to changes in directions. Most research has displayed no differences in different preplanned agility test within playing positions. However, no studies have been done on reactive agility within different positions on the soccer field. Aim: The purpose of the study was to compare if soccer players ́ reactive – and preplanned agility performance differs between their positions in the team. The study will also examine the level of correlation between results from reactive agility and preplanned agility. Methods: Thirty male soccer players, 17-19 years old, were tested in reactive agility and preplanned agility. The subjects were divided into three groups depending on their playing position, including defenders (n=10), midfielders (n=10) and forwards (n=10). Mean scores for both agility tests were analyzed with a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the criterion level for significance was set at 5 % (p ≤ 0.05). Correlations were performed to study the relationship between reactive agility and preplanned agility. Following limits were used to determine the strength of the value of Pearson correlation; r=.10 to .29 small, r=.30 to .49 medium, r=.50 to 1.0 large. Results: No statistical significant differences between defenders, midfielders and forwards in neither reactive agility (p=0.624) or preplanned agility (p=0.481) were perceived. There was a small correlation (r=0.24) between all studied results from the reactive – and preplanned agility test. When positions were correlated within the two test, the highest correlation between reactive agility and preplanned agility was found in midfielders with a medium correlation (r=0.47) while small correlations appeared within defenders (r=0.28) and forwards (r=-0.11). Conclusions: The findings of this thesis showed no statistical significant differences between playing positions in reactive agility nor in preplanned agility. The impact of the soccer players’ integration with different soccer coaches could be an explanation to the reactive agility results where some coaches may focus on developing perceptual skills more than other coaches. The absence of differences in preplanned agility may suggest that the physical abilities needed to perform the Zig-Zag test did not differ among defenders, midfielders or forwards. It can also be suggested that reactive agility and preplanned agility are two independent variables who do not share characteristics. Future research should focus on incorporating a more valid reactive agility test for soccer players and study larger samples who are specialized in their positions.

    Abstract [en]

Aim: To compare social support and coping ability in acute coronary syndrome patients at the time of the cardiac event with a healthy community-based sample, with regard to age, sex, education and marital status.

Method: The study comprised 241 patients and 316 healthy controls. The participants answered a self-administered questionnaire that included three well-established scales. Multiple logistic regression was used in the analysis to compare the health situation between the patients and controls.

Results: Persons suffering from acute coronary syndrome rated emotional support significantly lower than the healthy controls. However, there were no differences between the two groups in terms of socio-demographic variables.

Conclusion: This study indicates that social support may be a predictor of acute coronary syndrome.

Faktorer som påverkar sjuksköterskans empatiska förmåga2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Empathy exists in most people from birth and involves an ability to listen to others and put themselves into a situation by understanding their feelings and reactions. Empathy is very important in health care, among other things, to create a good relationship between the nurse and patient and to offer good care. Although an empathetic approach is of great importance and is the basis for the nurse's main field of nursing, research suggests that the nurse deficiencies in their ability to show empathy. The study was a literature study and aimed to identify factors affecting the nurse's empathy in nursing. The result presenters two themes; factors identified by nurses and factors identified by patients. The factors identified by nurses were identified as working environment significance where both well-being and stress were factors that influenced the nurse empathy. The nurse will to do good and to practice the profession were also factors that impacted. Age, number of years in the profession and education level were also highlighted in the results as factors affecting the nurse's empathy. Factors identified by patients were to be heard and understood, and that the patient's suffering was identified by the nurse. Even nurses who took the time and made sure that a relationship between them were established perceived empathic. Empathy has positive effects both for patient physical care and for the nursing care. Empathy also promotes the nurse's self-esteem. Nurses’ empathy is possible to train and the care management must be aware of the positive effects of empathy and work to promote the existence of empathy in care.

Milk cereal drink increases BMI risk at 12 and 18 months, but formula does not2013In: Acta Paediatrica, ISSN 0803-5253, E-ISSN 1651-2227, Vol. 102, no 12, p. 1174-1179Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: Infant feeding affects growth, obesity and life-long health. This study examined the impact of dietary patterns on body mass index (BMI) at 12 and 18 months.

METHODS: We followed a cohort of 2,666 children recruited in 2007-2008. Feeding practices were obtained from parental questionnaires and anthropometric data collected by child health nurses.

RESULTS: At six months, 58.3% of the infant were breastfed, but only 1.6% exclusively. Many had begun eating solids (91.8%), porridge (87.7%) or milk cereal drink (46.6%). Bottle-feeding at four months was not a risk factor for a high BMI (>1 SD) at 12 or 18 months. Milk cereal drink at six months increased the risk of a high BMI at 12 and 18 months respectively (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.12-2.22, and 1.52, 1.07-2.17). Milk cereal drink use was increased by low parental education and maternal obesity and reduced by troubled sleep and parental group participation.

CONCLUSION: Formula at four months did not predict a high BMI at 12 or 18 months. Milk cereal drink use at six months was a risk factor for a high BMI at 12 and 18 months. The choice of milk cereal drink was influenced by parental factors, especially educational levels. ©2013 Foundation Acta Pædiatrica. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Influence of neighbourhood purchasing power on breastfeeding at four months of age: a Swedish population-based cohort study2013In: BMC Public Health, ISSN 1471-2458, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 13, no 1, article id 1077Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Parental socioeconomic status (SES) is an important determinant in child health, influencing beneficial factors such as breastfeeding. A better understanding of the influence of neighbourhood-level SES measures, relating to spatial determinants, might lead to targeted actions to promote breastfeeding during infancy.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study analysis the association between breastfeeding at four months of age and neighbourhood purchasing power, taking account of individual-level variables including maternal age, smoking and parental level of education. Data were obtained from a prospective population- based cohort study recruited from birth in 2007-2008 in the Halland region, southwestern Sweden. Questionnaire data on the individual-level variables and the outcome variable of breastfeeding at four months (yes/no) were used (n=2,407). Each mother was geo-coded with respect to her residential parish (there are 61 parishes in the region) and then stratified by parish-level household purchasing power. It emerged that four neighbourhood characteristics were reasonable to use, viz. <10%, 10-19%, 20-29% and ≥ 30% of the resident families with low purchasing power.

RESULTS: The proportion of mothers not breastfeeding at four months of age showed a highly significant trend across the neighbourhood strata (p=0.00004): from 16.3% (< 10% with low purchasing power) to 29.4% (≥ 30% with low purchasing power), yielding an OR of 2.24 (95% confidence interval: 1.45-3.16). After adjusting for the individual-level variables, the corresponding OR=1.63 (1.07-2.56) was significant and the trend across the strata was still evident (p=0.05). A multi-level analysis estimated that, in the neighbourhoods with ≥ 30% of the families with low purchasing power, 20% more mothers than expected, taking account of the individual-level factors, reported no breastfeeding at four months of age (≥ 95% posterior probability of an elevated observed-to-expected ratio).

CONCLUSION: The neighbourhood purchasing power provided a spatial determinant of low numbers of mothers breastfeeding at four months of age, which could be relevant to consider for targeted actions. The elevated observed-to-expected ratio in the neighbourhoods with the lowest purchasing power points toward a possible contextual influence. © 2013 Almquist-Tangen et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

What makes parents act and react? Parental views and considerations relating to ‘child health’ during infancy2017In: Journal of Child Health Care, ISSN 1367-4935, E-ISSN 1741-2889, Vol. 21, no 4, p. 415-423Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Lifestyle factors and behaviours are adopted very early in life and tend to persist throughout life. Considering that the parents are the primary gatekeepers for their child’s health, there is a need to gain more knowledge and deeper understanding about what causes parents to act and react in order for early preventive efforts to have any effect. The aim was to explore the parental views and considerations concerning ‘child health’ among parents with infants 8–10 months old. The sample was strategic and 16 parents (aged 23–41) were recruited from three child health centres in Sweden. Open-ended interviews were conducted and a qualitative, manifest content analysis approach was utilized. The parents described the subject ‘child health’ as a large, multifaceted concept. Three categories emerged during data analysis: developing a sixth sense, being affected by perceptions and believing health and ill health as a continuum. The parents perceived food and feeding issues as one of the most worrying aspects and a significant indicator of ‘child health’. In order to meet the parents on their turf, the ‘healthy health message’ conveyed needs to take the parental perspective into consideration rather than attempting to educate the parents from predetermined assumption, belief and values. © The Author(s) 2017

Considerations of the concept of infant health: a literature review2006In: Early Child Development and Care, ISSN 0300-4430, E-ISSN 1476-8275, Vol. 176, no 6, p. 575-589Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examined a wide range of literature in order to describe factors associated with the concept of infant health. The design of the study is a literature review examining 21 research studies, written in the English language. The study explored which factors were found to exert an influence on the concept of infant health. The result showed that the concept infant health is dependent on many factors but what seems to exert an influence are foremost maternal health and well-being, the family's health care utilization and the parental assessment of their own health. Additional studies are needed to fully understand the concept of infant health. The need for an infant definition that empowers infant health arises because, if a common ground is not clearly established, miscommunication may arise. Furthermore, there is a need to initiate a model for infant health.

Factors associated with discontinuation of breastfeeding before 1 month of age2012In: Acta Paediatrica, ISSN 0803-5253, E-ISSN 1651-2227, Vol. 101, no 1, p. 55-60Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is associated with many benefits for both mother and child. Initiation rates are high in Sweden. Recently a slight decline is seen.

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess factors associated with discontinuation of breastfeeding during the first 4 weeks.

METHOD: A population-based longitudinal birth cohort study recruiting from 2007 to 2008 in south-western Sweden. At the first visit to the child health centre, parents were asked to complete a questionnaire. Also, the infants' height, weight, head and waist circumference were collected. Response rate was 69.2%.

RESULTS: Twenty-seven per cent of mothers had breastfeeding problems. In a multivariate analysis, there was a negative correlation between breastfeeding and use of pacifier (OR 3.72; CI 2.09-6.63), maternal smoking (OR 2.09; CI 1.08-4.05) and breastfeeding problems (OR 2.54; CI 1.73-3.71). Breastfeeding problems were correlated with poor sucking technique (OR 2.96; CI 2.14-4.07), support from maternity ward (OR 2.56; CI 2.05-3.19) and perceived poor weight gain (OR 1.37; CI 1.00-1.86).

CONCLUSION: Many mothers reported breastfeeding problems that are associated with an early cessation. This is preventable with support, but the timing is crucial. To promote breastfeeding, the support from the child health centres must be tailored with the maternal perspective in mind.

Ser du mig?: En litteraturstudie om upplevelsen av att leva med Parkinsons sjukdom utifrån teorin Preserving Self2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the elderly population. The disease adversely affects the bodily function in various ways and the medication of the disease is important in order to handle the various symptoms that arise. People with Parkinson's disease are at risk of impaired quality of life due to the limitations in life that the disease causes. The purpose with this study was to highlight the patient's experience of living with Parkinson's disease. The study was conducted as a general literature study with a deductive approach, in which ten result articles were used. The result was categorized and presented based on the five stages and four transitions in the theory of Preserving Self. The theory contributed to a broad and detailed result from the resultarticles and added an in-depth picture of life with Parkinson's disease. The nurses’ responsibility includes getting the patient to participate in their care and taking advantage of the resources that exist in each individual. Using the theory of Preserving Self can contribute to in-depth knowledge in the care for people with Parkinson's disease.

    Abstract [en]

Severe mental illness is a growing health problem. Severe mental illness and self-stigma in combination needs to be examined to clarify what impact they have in combination for each individual. The purpose of this study was to examine what kind of impact self-stigma has to individuals with severe mental illness. The study was conducted as a literature review and the results consisted of three categories: Becoming ones illness Feeling of shame and Feeling of hopelessness. Self-stigma affects the individuals negatively and makes it harder for them to recover. The combination of severe mental illness and self-stigma creates negative consequences from the stereotypical and jaundiced. Individuals have problems with finding meaning of life and are reluctant to seek treatment for their symptoms because of the feeling of shame and hopelessness. In return the symptoms of the mental illness increases and provides more suffering and decreases the meaning of life. It is important that nurses are aware of and are mindful to the individuals prejudice, feelings of shame and hopelessness about their mental illness. Nurses need to make sure that it is possible to be empowered as a patient. Interventions and nursing that aim to reduce the symptoms of self-stigma in severe mental illness should be adapted to the prejudice of the society. More scientific research is needed because of the limited number of present studies concerning self-stigma. There is a need to further investigate self-stigma in severe mental illness. Preferably studies with longitudinal design that focus on the phenomenon self-stigma and how it affects people with severe mental illness, to give a greater understanding.

    Abstract [en]

Patients with ocular diseases are a large group which is expected to increase since many of the ocular diseases are age-related and world population is aging. These patients are found in various wards where they are inpatients because of other causes than ocular diseases. Nursing care is the nurse´s major responsibility and they are obliged to follow guidelines and laws regularizing their profession. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate nurses´ experience of providing care for inpatients with any ocular disease, in their anamnesis. The pilot study was conducted using a qualitative content analysis using interviews. The results were compiled into three categories; Experiencing inadequate accountability, Experiencing the need for priorities, and Experiencing the ignorance of ophthalmology. The nurses in the pilot study experienced nursing care to patients with various eye diseases in history difficult. They thought they lacked sufficient knowledge and because of the workload which made them prioritize in a way which did not benefit the patients. The nurses expressed a need of more education in ophthalmic care. More knowledge would support them in experiencing an increased security in their profession and lead to improved patient safety. The pilot study shows that there is potential for improvement to enhance patient safety and should be followed up in a full scale study.

Att tillfriskna från Anorexia Nervosa2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today’s society many women have to endure health hazard. To live up to society's norms and what is seen as the ideal appearance can put a lot of pressure as well as force the women to strive for this ideal. This constant endeavor can make the recovery from Anorexia Nervosa more complex. The purpose of the literature study was to examine women's recovery from AN. The study is performed as a general literature study with scientific articles as a base. Results have proven that support is the most important caretaking method the nurse can provide throughout this process. For the women’s part, it’s of highest importance that the decision of recovery is self-decided. That consideration is taken to both body and soul is a challenge in the caretaking for women with AN and the fact that gaining weight is not related with full recovery is distinctly highlighted. It’s required for the nurse to possess in depth knowledge of women’s experiences surrounding the recovery to gain an entirety. Additional research of the experiences after finished treatment and after recovery from the disease is required. Even further complementary research surrounding women’s view on a recovery may be required.

Short-term effects of 90/90 breathing with ball and balloon on core stability2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background Breathing is a life preserving mechanism that can influence muscles of the core and its stabilizing mechanisms, especially by the function of the diaphragm and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) build-up. The 90/90 bridge with ball and balloon (90/90 breathing) is one technique doing so, thereby affecting the core and core stability (CS). Both have been shown to influence injury, and in some studies performance, and are therefore deemed important. In the Functional Training branch exercises that influence CS are used as core activations in the warm-up to increase performance in the short-term, but scientific proof for that is lacking. Objective The aim of this study was therefore to investigate if a core activation in the form of the 90/90 breathing can increase the short-term CS. Methods To test this an intervention trial was designed where the subjects were divided into a control group (CG) and a breathing group (BG). Three CS-tests were done to assess the CS at two times, Pre and Post. The double-leg-lowering (DLL), the unilateral-hip-bridge (UHB) and the single-leg-stand (SLS). The BG did the 90/90 breathing in between Pre and Post, whereas the CG did nothing. The data was checked for group differences at Pre and Post as well as the difference in the performance change from Pre to Post between groups using Independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. Improvements from Pre to Post within groups were calculated with Pared Samples t-test and Wilcoxon tests. Results No consistent effect of the intervention was found. The DLL showed the most positive results with a performance improvement in the BG and a greater performance change for the BG than for the CG. The UHB showed mixed results with a better performance at Post for the BG in both legs but only an improvement for the non-dominant leg in the BG. The SLS showed no improvement for the BG in any test. Conclusion The inconsistent results show no general positive effect of the 90/90 breathing on CS. However, the positive effects in the DLL make a position and task specific effect of the 90/90 breathing on CS possible. Practitioners and coaches should consider this task specificity when planning warm-ups. Future research should also choose CS tests and training exercises more task specific to the studied objectives to obtain more distinct results. More research on the short-term effects of CS interventions is needed for a clearer understanding of the subject.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Every year around 30 000 people in Sweden are affected by stroke, which means that many family members and relatives also are affected. It is important to see the person related with the related as a whole when the family has a significant role in the disease process. Aim: The aim of the study was to illustrate the experience of being related to a family member who is in stroke. Method: Literature study with ten articles. Results: Two categories appeared in the result; A Changed Life Situation and Being left outside, and their associated subcategories. The result showed that life was reversed for the related. One major change was that one's own needs ended aside, roles changes, social life was limited and the person who once felt experienced was someone else. Conclusion: More implementation of research results is needed to make nurses more informed about how close relatives experience the situation when a family member is in a stroke. The goal is that close relatives should feel participant, acceptance and understanding by seeing nurses the whole family as a whole where the relationship is based on security, empathy and respect.

New Product Development in a Medical Device Context: Managing Projects of different Novelty2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Healthcare is a topic that matters since it aims to ensure better well-being for people. An important and essential part of health care is medical devices since it has the potential to increase the quality of life for people with a health problem. Among the suppliers of innovation, the medical device industry is a dynamic field providing thousands of products to the market every year with the aim to enhance people's lives. However, there are many actors that influences the medical device development such as regulations that ensures that medical devices follow a specific procedure during development, at the same time buyers and end-users need to be integrated throughout the medical device design, this results in challenges during medical device development.

This thesis focuses on new product development (NPD) and investigates how projects are managed in a medical device context. Furthermore, the thesis elaborates projects of different novelty and the influence from the characteristic of complexity. This is done with a single-case study of a case company that develop and market medical devices. The empirical findings shows that the main challenges are in the area of clinical studies and product development, furthermore, managing NPD projects in a medical device context deals with specialized knowledge that is dispersed among a group of actors which can influence the development of the medical device no matter the novelty. It was found that the difference between the studied projects was minor in terms of complexity. Though, it was noticed that the project of radical novelty had more interaction with the end-user, which can relate to uncertainty in the function of the product, as a consequence from being completely new product. As a result from the findings, the implication is that the projects can not be treated and managed similarly as a result from uncertainty, thus, it depends on the integration of actors, consequently, influencing time of development and resources.

This thesis contributes to the community of companies operating in a medical device context where there is minor focus on complexity in projects, it was found that it might be beneficial to make distinctions in complexity characteristics when identifying challenges and addressing NPD projects in a medical device context.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Family-centered care in family rooms is more common in Swedish neonatal care units nowadays. Infants were previously cared for in open bay, where multiple newborn children were cared for. In order for the pediatric nurse to be able to provide patient-safe and good family-centered care and obtain a good working environment, it is important to examine the pediatric nurse´s experience of working in family rooms. Aim: The aim of the study was to illustrate the experiences of pediatric nurses working with family-centered care in family rooms at a neonatal care unit. Method: The study was conducted as a literature review with systematic search and examination and builds upon nine scientific articles. The contents were reviewed according to the Bettany-Saltikov and McSherry method. Results: Pediatric nurses experienced that working in a family room promoted family-centered care. Pediatric nurses experienced a worsened work environment. A large part of the work was done alone, and it could give them a sense of isolation. They perceived that their time was no longer enough, and it led to stress and anxiety. Conclusion: Work in family rooms is a new way of working for pediatric nurses. It takes time getting used to the new operating procedures for family-centered care in family rooms to be good and patient safety, simultaneously to maintain a good work environment.

    Abstract [en]

Vaccination of typical childhood diseases in the world has as an intervention itself saved millions of people the last 200 years. Despite this the anti-vaccine movement is a growing phenomenon. The aim of this review was to map out the different factors affecting parents in their decision-making regarding childhood vaccination. 18 peer reviewed articles were analyzed and constituted the basis for the result. From this three themes emerged, all of them with inspiration from Rogers (1995) Diffusion of Innovation theory. The themes are: The Innovation, Communication Channels and A Social System. Some of the reasons for why parent choose to vaccinate their children were following a tradition/norm and/or a fear of the vaccine preventable diseases. The most prominent factors to why parents chose to refrain from childhood vaccinations were a fear of side effects and permanent disability as well as the belief that an infant is too young and its immune system is too vulnerable. An information aspect permeated all studies and the primary problem seemed to be inadequate and unreliable information from authorities and health care providers. Therefore, as a nurse, there is a need to be open to take part of the factors behind parents’ childhood vaccination beliefs to be able to help them make an adequate decision.

    Abstract [en]

Multiple myeloma is a cancer illness that arises in the bone marrow. In Sweden 500-600 people per year get diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The purpose of the literature study was to highlight the experiences of individuals with multiple myeloma through the six dimension of pain. The study is based on a theoretical frame of reference. To get at overall picture of the individuals experiences of living with multiple myeloma, the result was described through the six dimensions of pain. The result shows that multiple myeloma patient´s social life becomes reduced, their habit changes and booth their physical and psychological health reduces. Pain, fatigue and infections caused by lower immune system affects the individuals. The knowledge of the illness in society is trivial and this makes the understanding for people with multiple myeloma and their illness slight. A proper pain assessment is necessary for the nurse to complete, to get a full understanding about the individuals and their quality of life. More research about the illness, treatments and medications is needed and the goal should be to cure the disease.
