    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we propose an approach for gathering data to generate user requirements for an artifact under development, in this case the e-newspaper based on an e-paper solution. Inspired by future workshops, scenario- and mock-up techniques we suggest the da Vinci approach. In addition to describing the approach we also report types of requirements possible to derive. We conclude by discussing experiences from applying the approach in the DigiNews project.

    Abstract [en]

    The introduction of the e-newspaper, i.e. a newspaper based on e-paper technology brings new design challenges. In this paper we report from two parallel studies, an online questionnaire to newspaper readers and a questionnaire to newspaper designers. The aim was to find out what qualities to bring from print and online to the e-newspaper as initial input in the design process to design a usable and acceptable artifact. The results show both similarities and differences between the two respondent groups.

    Participatory Design of Future Every Day IT Artifacts: Engaging readers and publishers in designing the e-newspaper2005Conference paper (Other academic)

    In this paper we describe a PD approach applied in a context of designing a future everyday IT artifact with limited resources. In the DigiNews project we aim at proposing design suggestions for the future e-newspaper, i.e. a newspaper based on e-paper technology. The PD approach includes future workshop, scenario and mock-up techniques and focus groups. Based on eleven workshops with readers, newspaper staff and advertisers and three different focus groups involving readers, newspaper designers and interaction designers respectively, we illustrate the various types of results which could be derived from this approach.

    In this paper we are addressing the following research question: How can an interorganizational learning approach influence an industry business strategy for a new innovation? When adopting new innovations organizations need to learn about the innovation’s gains and how it functions in the organizations line of business. This organizational learning process varies between “trial and error”, information seeking or a“wait and see” approach etc. When new innovations have the potential to cause paradigm shifts to whole industries interorganizational learning approaches are called for. We have explored the e-newspaper case, i.e. the introduction of e-paper technology in the newspaper industry. E-paper is a reflecting display technology with properties very close toprint on paper, with high contrast and readability. Thus, an e-newspaper, i.e. a newspaper service published on an e-paper device, holds the potential of replacing the printed editionin the long run, thereby heavily reducing printing and distribution cost, making it an interesting prospect for the industry. In two research projects, DigiNews and UbiMedia, we have conducted interviews, future workshops, design focus group and steering committee meetings with newspaper representatives from nine Swedish newspaper companies and the Swedish Newspaper Publishers´ Association. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how an interorganizational learning approach between competing organizations to new innovations can play out using the four modes of knowledge conversion by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995). The results indicates that by taking such an approach, Swedish newspaper organizations were able to reach an agreement on collaborating on distribution, possible standards and business models while still competing on content, thereby initiating a joint business strategy for the e-newspaper introduction. Summing up, the findings show that an interorganizational learning approach benefits from: (1) being organized at very early in the innovation process; and (2) being organized by a neutral facilitator and academics are suitable for that role.

    This paper adds to the overall understanding of new media adoption in general and the promotion of the e-newspaper in particular by empirically studying the preferences and demands of the potential users. The e-newspaper is a newspaper published on e-paper technology. The findings in this paper is based on the results from two studies, i.e. an online questionnaire with 3626 respondents and an evaluation in real life settings with 10 families over a two week period. Our initial hypothesis was that: users confronted with a vision of new technology and services are more positive to adopt than users with actual use experience of technology and services in an early stage of development with inherent technology problems. The research question of the paper is: How does use experience influence perceptions of preferences and demands for the e-newspaper? The findings showed that the hypothesis proved to be false, the test persons that have an actual use experience of the e-newspaper, despite the shortcomings in the device and service, were more positive to adopt than the respondents that have experienced concept movies and prototypes with more advanced functionality and interface.

    The newspaper industry has certainly benefitted from technological innovations but at the same time received new competition, challenging their position in the media landscape, forcing them to explore new innovative ideas to find new profitable revenue streams. Based on 77 interviews with newspaper managers from Europe, US and Japan over a period of seven years (2007-2013), this paper addresses the research question: How are newspaper organizations managing digital innovation? This paper takes a theoretical perspective from literature on digital innovation, and use concepts of open and closed innovation to propose a model of management modes in digital innovation. The practical implications of this study will contribute to the ongoing debate within the challenged newspaper industry.

    This paper reports from an initial stage of a Swedish project concerning mobile IT support for tourism. From three workshops with actors within the tourism sector we identified barriers and challenges in designing IT support for all phases of the tourist life cycle. Thereafter we designed and evaluated a mobile tourism guide in real life setting with six different user groups. The research question of this paper is: What factors influence the design of mobile services to be used by multi-users in multiple contexts? The initial findings show that indeed there are several design challenges regarding e.g. a) the visibility of the content of the screen when multi-users are simultaneously using the service, b) the audibility of the speaker voice in the service when used in a surrounding with traffic noise, c) providing optional designs for different context, i.e. indoors/outdoors etc, and d) providing personalization options for different group sizes.

    The aim of this paper is to further explore new issues on advertising in ubiquitous information environments by theoretically and empirically discussing challenges of ubiquitous advertising. We have performed 15 interviews and 9 workshops with publishers and advertisers from the media industry. Our findings confirm previous research but also point out several additional challenging issues. We contribute to theory and practice by suggesting additional challenges for ubiquitous advertising regarding: 1) dynamic data exploitation, 2) real-time advertising adjustment (and channeling) to user behavior and preferences, 3) context adaptation and 4) user-advertiser relations.

    User Generated Content in News Media – a Comparison of Reader and Newspaper Views2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    The newspaper industry is forced to find new business models for their digital channels due to decreasing revenues from subscription, single copy sales and advertising. One of many paths to explore is user generated content (UGC). UGC has been described as a democratizing “tool”, a new way for newspapers to connect to their audience, and also to attract advertisers in a new way. So far, research on UGC in a newspaper setting has either focused on the user or the newspaper perspective. By two different questionnaires, one to newspaper readers with 3663 respondents and one to newspaper staff with 204 respondents we attempt to make a comparison of reader and newspaper views on UGC in news media. The purpose of this paper is to describe perceptions and views of user generated content in the newspaper context, and to investigate if there is a gap between newspaper staff and reader perceptions. The findings show that readers in general value UGC to be important and attractive content, but that only a few are positive to contribute with UGC. Newspaper staff shows a tendency to think that users rate UGC content value higher than they actually do. Newspaper staff also rate that users are more likely to contribute with UGC than they actually are. There is also a difference between what newspaper staff think motivates readers to contribute and what the reader survey shows. This paper contributes to the understanding of UGC and also provides valuable insights to newspaper firms considering exploring UGC.

    We have studied a two-year project aiming at exploring the potentials of the e-newspaper, i.e. a news service published with e-paper technology. Different actors have interests in this process, e.g. newspaper publishers, device producers, readers and advertisers. These actors are forming value networks by negotiations of interests and positions. The contribution of the paper is twofold: firstly we show how the value network created around e-newspaper is dependent on the convergence of different actors and their interests; secondly our theoretical contribution is to show how Actor Network Theory (ANT) can be used in combination with other theories - in this case genre theory - to analyze emergent value networks. ANT captures the general process of how the value network takes form, while genre theory captures the domain specific context of e-newspapers, and how this structures negotiations between different stakeholders who want to form the e-newspaper genre.

    This paper address advertising in ubiquitous media environments by empirically discussing challenges suggested in previous research. We conclude by suggesting that the publishers are well suited to take on the role as pervasive service providers and identify four specific

    challenges related to that role: 1) How to develop models to produce and make use of consumer information dynamically over time in a ubiquitous media environment?; 2) How to adjust advertising to consumer preferences, i.e. advertising on consumer terms?; 3) In what ways can advertising be integrated with services/content adjusted to context? and 4) How to create an arena for building relations between consumers and advertisers as well as between advertisers?

    This paper addresses the need for more detailed accounts for evaluation in design science research literature. By revisiting a design project regarding the future e-newspaper we give detailed descriptions of its authentic and concurrent evaluation approach by illustrating the what, why and how of all evaluation activities throughout the whole project. The project produced seven different design artifacts that were evaluated. The utility and theoretical outcomes of the evaluation activities clearly influenced design decisions regarding newspaper design, user value and business model design as well as decisions on strategic levels. We emphasize a holistic and concurrent approach to evaluation compared to the general design science research thinking and argue that reflecting on how to seek authenticity is important. By authenticity we refer to the notion of how closely an evaluation captures the context and actual use of an artifact. With the holistic approach we encourage evaluation to be inclusive of different aspects and relationships between stakeholder groups in the evaluation activities. Further we think that concurrency is not narrowed to evaluation but also regards theorizing. While it makes sense for planning to distinguish between phases and stages of evaluation and theorizing, in practice they are intrinsically interlinked and concurrent.

    The two-sided market of newspapers with its two customer groups, readers and advertisers, is changing due to digitalization. This former stable and profitable market has lately suffered from both decreasing subscription and advertiser revenue. In this paper we use the term ubiquitous media environments to represent the vision of future media environments enabling device independent mass-scale distribution of ubiquitous media services in integrated infrastructures. We build upon a two-year action research project where researchers worked together with the Swedish newspaper industry to envision future ubiquitous media services and explore the following research question: how can ubiquitous media services be designed to leverage and balance value in a two-sided market? Five examples of ubiquitous media services were developed in collaboration and thereafter evaluated. These services were then illustrated in movie clips to trigger discussions on how ubiquitous media services can be designed. Drawing on the value aspects of ubiquitous media services from an advertiser and reader point-of-view and the platform owner role of the newspapers in a future ubiquitous media environments, we describe and discuss how ubiquitous media services can be designed to leverage value for advertisers and readers, and how newspaper organizations can strategize ubiquitous media environments. © 2016 Universidad de Talca - Chile

    This paper discusses Living Labs from a researcher view based on experiences from Halmstad Living Lab with about 100 activities with different stakeholders. We define Living Labs as a milieu based on continuity, in which methods and techniques are used to empower users and to involve all relevant stakeholders, in open innovation processes in realistic settings. The relevant stakeholders are; researchers, companies, users, public partners and stakeholders of emerging technology. We argue for the relevance of the researcher stakeholder and discuss the dilemmas of an active researcher regarding role, process, outcome and relations. We conclude by suggesting a model indicating tensions in a Living Lab from a researcher view, i.e. neutrality vs. taking sides; research process vs. innovation process; research contribution vs. market value; and critical reflections vs. socialization.

    In this paper, we experiment with different audience groups to study how they differ with respect to the adoption of new media products/services. We expand the existing framework of early adopters, which is heavily directed towards the technological aspects of a product, by including users that are more interested in the social and content-related aspects of products/services. We are interested in seeing whether these audience groups differ in terms of preferences for new media products in order to shed light on possible strategies for the introduction of the e-newspaper. The study was done in a larger research project, DigiNews, on the introduction of e-newspapers. The paper is built on the results from an online survey on attitudes and preferences towards new technology, media in general and a planned e-newspaper. Data was collected from in total 2976 respondents at the web sites of three Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet, Göteborgs-Posten, and Sundsvalls Tidning.

    This article investigates how audience groups differ with respect to the adoption of new media services. The authors expand the existing framework of early adopters, which is heavily directed towards the technological aspects of a product, by including users that are more interested in the social and content-related aspects of media services. The objective is to identify and explore important audience groups that can be used as initial target groups for the introduction of the e-newspaper (a newspaper that is published on e-paper technology).     This paper is based on a user-centric innovation project, Free2Ride, which is seen as an example of community interaction that overcomes boundaries. The Free2Ride projects goal was to develop a piece of ICT safety equipment consisting of a sender (on the horse) and a receiver (application in a smartphone) to be used by equestrian club members during their everyday riding activities. We will answer the research question of what the characteristics of a boundary dialogue in user-centric innovation activities are. The aim of the paper is to propose a model describing the characteristics of boundary dialogue in user-centric innovation that involve different communities of practices such as ICT developers, users and researchers. An important element of that model is the mental wandering, inwards and outwards, by core members in a community. We discuss the temporal as well as the symbolic nature of the mental wandering during the boundary dialogue in user-centric innovation activities. We applied a combination of research approaches consisting of action research and engaged scholarship approach. The theoretical framework for analyzing our findings is communities of practices with a specific interest in boundary spanning and learning dialogues.

We applied an action-oriented research approach, where the empirical results are from The Find Project (TFP), which aim is to customize an ICT product based on the needs of a user group. The findings are analyzed from a community of practice perspective where three different communities, i) researchers from Halmstad Living Lab (HLL), ii) ICT developers (ICTD) and iii) next of kin of demented elderly persons (NOKD), represented the unit of analysis. We identified situations and activities that played a vital role for the innovation process in terms of boundary interaction dynamics. The contribution of our research to innovation theory is a combination and further exploration of the boundary spanning and communities of practice theories. We have developed a conceptual model describing the dynamics in boundary interactions of an ICT innovation process with regard to boundary objects-inuse and brokering. The conceptual model highlights two different levels of brokering: i) inner-level brokering and ii) outer-level brokering.

    A recurring problem when teaching Business Process Orientation (BPO) is the difficulty students have connecting conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge. Literature suggests that one solution is to combine different forms of learning, such as hand-on exposure to enterprise resource planning (ERP) together with traditional teaching. This article presents a three step teaching case designed by the authors in order to explore students' learning outcome by using ERP systems together with BPO. The learning outcome of the students was analysed with a focus on connections between conceptual and procedural knowledge. Using Bloom's revised taxonomy we were able to identify connections between students' conceptual and procedural knowledge together with the cognitive processes of understanding, applying and analysing. The result indicates that applying procedural knowledge in an ERP facilitates the students' ability to understand, analyse and evaluate based on conceptual knowledge such as business process orientation.

    User involvement in information system development, as well as in digital innovation processes, is viewed as a key element for success. By introducing users in IS projects, ethical consideration is needed. Even though ethical theoretical frameworks are available in the IS (and other) spheres; cheap and fast methods and tools for applying ethics efficiently and effectively in everyday design and development work remain scarce.     Abstract [en]

    While this era of digital technology brings great possibilities for improving the lives of many people with digital healthcare services, the design of these services in turn present challenges that are ethical in nature. Participatory Design (PD) values user involvement in design from a democratic, empowerment and ethical perspective. However, the design of digital healthcare services constitutes sensitive design situations, that is, situations that have the potential to negatively impact the participants. As a consequence, participation in these design situations involves risks, causing ethical dilemmas. The ethical dilemmas that designers face in sensitive design situations are situated, dynamic, diverse, unpredictable, and occur in-action. Yet, it is a complex field with little in situ support for designers who intend to involve users in sensitive design situations, and high complexity and risk increase the need to understand ethics in these situations. Consequently, this thesis intends to answer the question: How can users be involved in sensitive design situations?

    The research question has emerged from the study of two design projects and is addressed through a Design Research (DR) approach. Both projects aimed at designing Digital Peer Support (DPS); one designs DPS for children between 8-12 cured from cancer, and the other designs DPS for people diagnosed with schizophrenia. The DR approach enables the study of de facto design situations in the two design projects. The thesis consists of a collection of five papers and a cover paper.

    The results show that, in sensitive design situations it can be challenging to uphold the fundamental ethical commitments of PD: that participation is a democratic right, the user is the expert, design should enhance, and design is situated. Based on the empirical study, I propose four principles for ethics in sensitive design situations that aim to support the upholding of these ethical commitments: (I) the principle of enhancement; (II) the principle of acknowledgement; (III) the principle of advocacy; and (IV) the principle of accommodation.

    The research contributes to the discourse on ethics in PD by expanding the understanding of ethical values of user involvement. Ethical guidelines must be dynamic and responsive, and participation should be carried out using methods for continuous critical reflection. The research contributes to practice by providing practical guidance for those who intend to involve users in sensitive design situations, ethical review boards who review PD, and for training of future PD researchers.

    This paper reports on how gamification was used to promote Self-Directed Learning (SDL) in a course at a Swedish university. SDL is a strategy to lifelong learning [1], and essential in today's fast-changing society. However, it is challenging to achieve in higher education due to an emphasis on extrinsic motivation, and a tradition of the teacher being in control. Gamification is the use of game elements in non-game contexts [2] and has been used in educational contexts to motivate and engage students. Based on six years experience of teaching a gamified course, this paper seeks to answer the question: How can gamification support Self-Directed Learning in higher education?

    Self-directed learners continue to learn after the formal education has ended, which is essential in most professions today. The concept was described by Garrison [1] as having three dimensions: self-management (control), self-monitoring (responsibility) and motivation. This paper focuses on SDL as one perspective on learning, exploring the possibility for using gamification to support SDL.

    The paper reports on the experiences from the past six years of teaching a gamified course for first-year interaction design undergraduate students. A total of 253 students have taken the course, which implements several game elements: points, levels, choice, boss, collaboration, player status, and feedback. The students' experiences have been evaluated in several ways: the university’s standard summative evaluation form, since 2015 also a summative oral evaluation, and during 2016 and 2017 oral evaluations were also performed halfway through the course. The experiences from teaching the course are analysed using the three dimensions of SDL.

    For example, self-management is supported by the use of choice and the transparency of the player status page. In this case, the students were able to strategically choose some of their assignments, based on their level of ambition, through the overview of their current points. Self-monitoring is for example supported by the transparency of the reward structure and frequent external feedback; in this case, the point system and associated profile page.

    Furthermore, the reward structure, levels, choice, bosses, and the overall novelty of the concept supported motivation. The challenge in SDL is to internalise extrinsic motivation [1], and in this case the overall strong grades of the students, and their continued motivation to participate in course activities show that this was at least partly successful. In this case, the challenge was how to balance the game elements in order to achieve SLD, yet still maintain the structure of formal education.

    We formulate four ways in which gamification can support SDL: feedback can support all three dimensions of SDL and is one of the essential game elements in higher education; game elements can be used to direct students towards critical thinking activities, and thus support self-monitoring; choice can be used to support self-management, but is the most difficult to design; and intrinsic motivation can be supported by using appropriate reward structures and frequent feedback.

    The design and development of information technology for use in health services presents a complex and sensitive situation. It includes not only managing differing interests and situations, but does so in a context that might give rise to negative emotions among the participating users. When the future users are children, this design process becomes even more complex. Participatory design is considered suitable for design with children. The premise for the participation of the children in this study was that they were, or had been treated for cancer. Therefore, their participation could awaken negative emotions, and make the situation difficult for them to handle. How participatory design with children can be conducted in such a sensitive context is therefore explored, grounded in the experience from six design workshops. The workshops evolved around the concept of comics as a way to allow the children to express themselves with familiar means. Three main lessons were learned from the workshops: working in pairs promotes an efficient work situation and the possibility to keep an eye on the children's wellbeing; proxies need to be distanced from the participating children; and the scenarios in the comics set the level of realism of the result.     Information technology in health services has an increasingly important role in people’s lives. However, the design of this constitutes a complex situation in a sensitive context. The complexity further increases when the users are children. Participatory approaches are beneficial for design with children, but there is limited research on how to design with children and how existing methods can be made to suit a health related context. This paper aims identifying common properties of participatory design methods when performed in a health related context. The identified properties of design methods were found to relate to three different categories: activities, designers and participants. To these were added properties of research methods with children in health contexts, where a majority related to the category of designers. This indicates the designers’ responsibilities are particularly important when designing with children in a sensitive, health related context.

    With the digitisation of society, e-health technology increasingly supports new design situations that extend those traditional to Information Systems, and therefore need to be better understood. In design for complex, new and sensitive design situations, it is not possible to apply known methods and solutions without a deeper situational understanding. These design situations are fraught with wicked problems that are contradictory and complex. This paper intends to answer how the wickedness of the design situation when designing e-health technology for people diagnosed with schizophrenia can be understood and what consequences the design situation has for the design process. The paper presents a grounded theory analysis of stakeholder interviews and focus group interviews with people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Four wicked problems are identified: struggle of dependence, contradiction of social interaction, contradiction of trust and counteracting improvement behaviour. The problems are interrelated and have consequences for the design, acceptance, use and user involvement in design of e-health technology for people diagnosed with schizophrenia.     With the digitisation of society, e-health systems support new contexts that are different from traditional Information Systems contexts, and therefore need to be better understood. In design for complex, new and sensitive contexts, it is not possible to apply known methods and solutions without deeper contextual understanding. The paper intends to answer how the wickedness of the design context when designing digital services for people diagnosed with schizophrenia can be understood – a context that is contradictory and complex, that is, a wicked design context. The paper presents a grounded theory analysis of stakeholder interviews and focus group interviews with people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Four wicked problems are identified: struggle of dependence, contradiction of social interaction, contradiction of trust and counteracting improvement behaviour. The paper also shows the viability of the use of grounded theory for uncovering and describing contextual wickedness. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017

    Abstract [en]

    With the expansion of e-health systems to more diverse and heterogeneous contexts and user groups, it is increasingly important to include users in design. Designers recognize the benefits of user participation, but including users with lowered cognitive and social abilities can be difficult. This paper intends to answer how these users can participate in the design of e-health systems. We conducted a case study with stakeholder interviews and design workshops with users diagnosed with schizophrenia to identify and overcome the challenges for participation. From the stakeholder interviews, we identified challenges relating to social interaction, technical experience, cognitive ability, and loss of individuality. We designed workshops that addressed these challenges and identify five strategies for unlocking the design potential of the participants: (1) work together with concrete materials and examples; (2) maintain a positive focus; (3) accept all ideas; (4) maintain and require realism; and (5) use previous interaction. We conclude that, when supported appropriately, it is possible to involve people diagnosed with schizophrenia. We also highlight the difficulty for someone not self-experienced to understand contexts as challenging and sensitive as this, and thus the value of user participation.

    This article describes a case study of the challenges that emerged from a formative evaluation process with the purpose of evaluating a digital peer support (DPS) service for children between 8 and 12 cured from cancer. The evaluation of DPS for children is particularly challenging. While the literature on evaluation with children is extensive, challenges such as risk assessment that become prevalent in the evaluation of DPS are not highlighted. This case study analyzes how the DPS service was evaluated over the course of two usability tests, a two-week diary study, a focus group interview, and a survey. Challenges relating to ethics, trust, risk assessment, and recruitment emerged during the evaluation process. We identify key strategies to handle these challenges: progression, proxies, and reflection. Performing a multistage evaluation process with progressing sensitivity allowed control of some of the complexities of the context in order to balance the degree of the children’s involvement with the degree of sensitivity. © 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    Designing Online Peer Support for Children with Cancer: Research Considerations and Ethical Implications2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Social support is essential for a person's capacity to live with a disease. For children, who do not have the same ability as adults to understand and deal with their disease, contact with other children with similar experiences can help them understand their own situation. In this paper we present an ongoing research project with a participatory approach. The challenge is to design online peer support (OPS) for children who have been diagnosed with cancer. The aim of this paper is to identify and shed light on ethical implications and related research considerations when designing a research approach for this sensitive context. Our literature review indicates that there is an apparent lack of research on OPS for supporting children with cancer. It also shows that there is knowledge on considerations to make when designing with children. However, the children in this category are suffering from physical and psychological consequences of their illness. Finally we discuss relevant ethical considerations, of which we highlight sensitivity and respect as most important and comprehensive.

    Innovative design targets new user groups and application areas. One example is health promoting digital services. In such design contexts it is essential to take social and ethical challenges into consideration. In this paper we report from an on-going design research project aimed at designing digital peer support (DPS) for children cured from cancer. Peer support can meet the children’s imperative need for social support. However, the design context is sensitive and gives rise to ethical challenges and considerations. We illustrate how participatory design (PD) activities can be designed to handle ethical challenges when designing for and with children. We present lessons learned, including using familiar activities, using personas and including healthy children when possible. Further, we reflect on the need to proactively design an ethical perspective into the entire design process, introducing the concept Ethics in Design. Copyright 2014 ACM.

    Children who have survived a life-threatening disease like cancer benefit from social support from other children with a similar background. However, these children are often geographically dispersed and have little opportunity to meet. We investigate the design and development of Digital Peer Support Services (DPS), which may overcome this problem. Peer support is a kind of social support that brings together peers with similar experiences to help their adjustment to a disease. The aim of this paper is to develop design patterns for social interaction that can be implemented in a DPS for children surviving cancer. We conducted four sets of design workshops with children, from which emerged clusters relating to peer support and friendship that were broken down into triads. From these, six design patterns for social interaction were developed. The patterns delineate different aspects of social interaction for children and are illustrated with examples from DPS prototypes and concepts. The patterns are organized into a hierarchy, comprising the beginning of a design pattern language for social interaction for children. An essential aspect of the patterns is providing users with transparency and control of the extent to which their social interaction is public or private. Copyright © 2014 ACM.

    Many different tasks are being performed in a ubiquitous environment as a car. The primary task is driving though with new technologies secondary tasks are affecting the driver performance in different ways. Safety is crucial and should never be influenced negative by secondary tasks. A vision of the in-car interface and the interaction with all systems or devices that are being used by the driver is that it can be seen as one environment where the devices and the different systems work pervasive and ubiquitous. The environment must support driver behavior in the future with these tasks whether they are primary or secondary, to remain the safety. In design of complex human-machine system e.g. interaction in a jet fighter cockpit, theories from Ecological Interface Design are applied to get a better understanding of how to design for such complexity where focus on one device at a time rarely occur. The ecological part is to see all the devices, interfaces in the same environment that interacts with a user as a whole. The question is; How should one design the work domain so that a driver can be adaptive in varied situations based on the information being visualized or communicated from different interfaces in a car, with consideration to driver experience and safety?

    In this paper, a questionnaire study concerning young Swedish peoplesuse patterns for mobile services is conducted. The study investigates what possibleadded value mobile multimedia services can provide for the users. Furthermore aworkshop with a focus group is conducted that also examines the possible added valuewith mobile multimedia services. This study also investigates what barriers there is formobile multimedia services. The identified barriers are analyzed using the InnovationDiffusion Theory (Rogers, 1995). The overall research question in this paper is: canmobile multimedia services be a feasible strategy for service providers to attract youngaudiences? Two main barriers for mobile multimedia services are identified, cost andtechnical restraints. Further on, one barrier that was identified in the workshop was thelack of knowledge of what services that were offered by service providers and mobileoperators. Even if complexity issues could be identified regarding the configuration of themobile devices, they were not critical. The results indicate that mobile multimediaservices may be a feasible strategy for service providers and mobile operators to reach ayounger audience.

    Based on a literature review, this paper identifies four socio-technical challenges relating to innovation actor's interactions in digital innovation. Furthermore, the paper explores how these challenges can be addressed. The challenges are investigated in a case study of digital innovation. The study is based on a two year long research and development project where an e-newspaper concept and a demonstrator based on e-paper technology was developed. Based on empirical findings, the paper presents eight activities which address the identified socio-technical challenges with digital innovation. The activities are: 1) support transparent digital ecosystem relationships, 2) facilitate cross-organizational communication, 3) create digital value blueprints, 4) translate heterogeneous knowledge, 5) involve all relevant user groups, 6) identify, design for, and authenticate digital user values, 7) design for multiple contexts of use, and 8) prototype iteratively. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014

    Digitization of analogue everyday artifacts, i.e. when physical products are equipped with digital capabilities, has a profound impact on today’s society. Some examples of these digital innovations aimed at consumer markets are the “connected” car, the digitized television set, and in the near future, digitized IKEA furniture. Digital innovation provides endless opportunities for providing value adding products and services. However, in digital innovation there is a need to find new ways of organizing network activities, i.e. activities such as e.g. production and translation of knowledge and enrollment of actors. These activities need to embrace and build on the networked aspects and the complexity inherent to digital innovation. This requires network activities that can overcome challenges with the ambiguous and messy characteristics of digital innovation. In this thesis, I propose that the theoretical perspective of network orchestration can enlighten fruitful ways to address challenges that are encountered when organizing network activities in digital innovation. Inspired by practical challenges with digital innovation, as well as contemporary calls for research within IS, this thesis investigates: How can network activities be orchestrated in digital innovation? Two cases of digital innovation aimed at consumer markets are studied. The first case concerns the digitization of the newspaper. The second case regards the digitization of door locks. Literature about digital innovation is used to understand the context of the studied phenomenon. Furthermore, theories about network orchestration as well as activities in innovation are used as a theoretical framework to help answer the research question. The thesis is based on an interpretative perspective where a multi-method approach has been applied to address the research question. The contribution is divided into two different parts. The first part presents four categories of empirically derived network activities that address socio-technical challenges with organizing digital innovation. The second part is a proposed model detailing orchestration of network activities in digital innovation. The model is based around the four suggested categories of network activities: (1) Supporting flexible innovation networks, (2) Production and translation of layered architectural knowledge, (3) Addressing heterogeneous user communities, and (4) Harnessing generativity to leverage value. The categories of network activities can be viewed as building blocks for the orchestration process. By emphasizing both a proactive and a reactive way of orchestrating digital innovation, the model proposes a means for organizations to address the ambiguity and complexity of digital innovation.

    This paper focuses on challenges that arise because of the heterogeneous nature of digital innovation. These challenges are studied through a case study involving a two year long research and development project concerning the development of the e-newspaper concept and a demonstrator based on e-paper technology. To enable the exploration of these challenges, a multi-method approach was chosen. The paper is built using a two-step process; first, presenting a framework based on a review of related literature identifying characteristics and aspects of heterogeneity in digital innovation, and secondly, applying this framework into the analysis of the e-newspaper case. Based on the empirical findings, the paper presents a discussion which elaborates on how digital innovation can be organized in order to address the identified challenges with heterogeneity in digital innovation.     Managing successful digital innovation processes is a challenging task, especially when it involves heterogeneous actors with different sets of knowledge. By gaining a better understanding of how different architectural layers of digital technology interplay with digital innovation, we can be better prepared for managing the complex and messy processes that often arise when working with digital innovation. In this article, we therefore ask: How does the layered architecture of digital technology interplay with digital innovation processes? A case study approach was selected to studied events involving multiple actors in an innovation and development project called the Smart Lock project. The theoretical basis for our study is digital innovation from the perspective of knowledge exchange and relationships. A temporal bracketing strategy was used to support a process analysis of the case data. The article primarily contributes to the body of research concerning digital innovation and provides an example to practitioners of how digital innovation processes can be coordinated and managed based on the innovation at hand.

    Never before has so much information been shared regarding people and their

    behaviour on social media. The development of digital services has provided users with

    the tools to communicate through text, sound, pictures and video. Less obvious in

    communication within social media are the social signals that humans use in everyday

    life. Signals that can help people understand and interpret situations and also help

    determine how to behave with others. To manage all this information that is shared

    across social media, companies uses hidden processes that regulate and distribute the

    content. Though, the users has a lacking understanding about why certain information is

    shown just for them, which can lead users to misinterpret their personal feed of

    information.

    This study has analysed these problems in the context of information feeds that is used

    in social media. The study explores how information feeds can be designed to increase

    transparency to other users, information and hidden processes. A qualitative research

    approach has been used where the collected data acts as the source provided for the five

    design principles that is defined in this study. These design principles has been

    incorporated in a prototype that later has been evaluated. The results show that they are

    providing increased transparency and acts within the three defined dimensions:

    transparency to identity, transparency to information and transparency to interaction.

    The design principles address these defined aspects and can thereby also provide an

    enhanced transparency to information feeds.

    Mobila enheter används i dagens samhälle i allt fler områden. Ett exempel är inomskolan där det blivit allt vanligare att mobila enheter som till exempel surfplattoranvänds i en-till-en-lösning där varje elev har sin egen enhet som de kan bära medsig. Detta användande har potentialen att förändra hur lärandet sker i skolan ochhur elever lär sig. Med mobilt lärande öppnas det upp nya möjligheter till ett lärandesom inte är begränsat till klassrummet utan som involverar ett informellt lärandesom sker i elevens vardagliga miljö. Tidigare forskning visar att användandet avmobila enheter ger möjligheter till nya läraktiviteter men att det samtidigt behövsmer forskning kring hur de mobila enheterna faktiskt används i undervisningen.Den här studien undersöker hur mobila enheter används i svenska högstadieskoloroch hur de stödjer elevers lärandemöjligheter. Genom en kvalitativ ansats harintervjuer med lärare genomförts för att finna svar på studiens frågeställning.Studien visar på vilka förutsättningar som krävs för att elevers lärandemöjligheterska stödjas samt identifierar fyra områden där elevers lärandemöjligheter stöds.Dessa områden är: lärande i nya miljöer, kommunikation med utomstående,anpassning efter elevers behov och elevers initiativtagande.

    Due to the increasing urbanization around the world, cities are growing at fast pace and following that, many cities face problems that includes both hard and soft issues. This can for instance be transportation, energy suppliance, social inclusion and quality of life for its citizens. As a way to contribute to solving these problems the smart city concept has emerged. This concept is focusing on capitalizing on ICT landscape in a strategic way. To achieve a smart city it is important to start with understanding the people and their needs, which can be supported by a Living Lab. These Living Lab involve a multitude of stakeholders in their innovation processes and thus, it becomes important to understand the power dependencies, claims and roles these stakeholders have.
