” Allt börjar och slutar med dig”      :   Aktörskap  hos studenter med invandrarbakgrund2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study is to have a deeper understanding about the motivations and the obstacles of an immigrant’s language learning. I have studied the problem with focus on integration and language learning. The study is principally based on deep interviews with Turkish immigrants. I have studied the question by means of a socio-cultural perspective of learning; Mead’s conceptions I, Me and the generalised other; Scheff’s conception, the social bonds and Freire’s conception, dialog and Asplund’s conception social responsiveness.

On the surface it seams like, the émigré is someone who is incapable or reluctant to learn Swedish and integrate in the society. During the study, I have discovered an emotional obstacle, which arises at the émigré’s meeting with the Swede. One usually bypasses this emotional obstacle and concentrates on the cognitive level for language learning. The emigrant thinks then the Swedish language is difficult to learn and she knows too little Swedish to communicate with the Swede. The Swede thinks that the immigrant does not want to learn Swedish and integrate in the society. When I focused on the immigrant’s subjective experience about the meeting with the Swede, I noticed that the emigrant experiences the meeting as a sort of one way communication. At this meeting, she is assessed negatively by the Swede. The immigrant finds it difficult to develop a positive emotional attitude towards the Swede and the Swedish language. Then she gets away from the meeting with the Swede and reduces her relations with the Swedish culture to a minimum level.

I have speculated on the immigrant’s negative experience by means of Asplund’s conception social responsiveness and a governmental report of investigation about segregation. For a more active language learning and integration, I proposed, that the language education (SFI) should encourage the emigrant to question society with a critical attitude to identify herself in the new situation and the society. This can be achieved by means of a dialogical perspective, which presupposes and develops a strong trust in the human being, love, humility, solidarity, respect and the critical thought.

Medarbetarnas välmående på arbetsplatsen: En kvalitativ studie som undersöker undersköterskor i äldrevården2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

OPTIMAL ENERGY DESIGN FOR A SYSTEM OF PUMPED HYDRO-WIND POWER PLANTS2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

Awareness and concern regarding the environmental effects of greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of non-renewable energy sources has increased over the last decades. A considerable development of new technology for renewable energy has occurred globally as an answer to this concern. There has been a major progress in production of electricity and heat generated from solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass, geothermal resources, and biofuels and hydrogen.

Consequently, the development of energy storages has become an imperative part, for integration of renewable energy. It is beneficial for the entire supply chain, for dependability and better stability, and for enhanced quality of electrical power.

This thesis is exploring an optimal energy design for a system of pumped hydro-wind power plants including storage. Solutions with Pumped Hydro Storages have a great potential for their balancing role necessary for a higher degree of renewable energy sources, RES, in the energy systems because of the intermittent and variable nature of these sources.

Tehri pumped hydro storage plant, in Uttarakhand, India is one of the objects studied in this thesis. The systems total efficiency of 93%, calculated from head losses, is discussed as well as wind potential and its impact. Wind data is obtained from National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) and analysed using the software tools MATLAB and WindPro. The finally chosen area explored for wind potential is Ramakkalmedu, Idukki district, Kerala, India. After selection of site within the area, three different turbines; Siemens SWT-3.2-113 3.2 MW, Enercon E-126 4.2MW, and Enercon E-126 7.58MW were considered for analysis.

The analysis consists of several parts; Wind farm modelling, Noise estimation of Wind Park, estimation of Annual Energy Production (AEP), Capacity factor, Wind park efficiency with respect to the storage/reservoir´s base load variation. Results are achieved for all three turbines. The overall conclusion is that combined hydro and wind power with a pumped storage, is a satisfactory method for bulk energy store to address peak loads, which is validated by this thesis.

Keywords: Pumped Hydro, Wind farm, Energy Storage, Renewable Energy.

Mesophilic anaerobic digestion conducted in single unit reactor at increasing ammonia concentrations2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The use of mesophilic anaerobic digestion for treatment of organic wastes is a growing biotechnology for sustainable energy supply. Ammonia inhibition is a major problem in anaerobic digestion mainly when digestion of nitrogen-rich substrates such as livestock wastes and manure occurs. This paper provides a summary of research conducted on ammonia inhibition of the anaerobic process. An experiment with mesophilic digestions of swine manure was conducted in single unit reactors, which were controlled under different ammonia concentrations by addition of NH4Cl in different amounts. From the experimental results, it was shown that NH4Cl could be an effective chemical agent for removing foam and scum in the digester. Methane production was decreased with the increasing NH4Cl addition until a collapse was observed between 11.2 g NH4+-N/l and 13.2 g NH4+-N/l. Contrary to the findings in thermophilic digestion, a dysfunction of acidogenesis was also observed since both gas and methane production was delayed with increasing NH4Cl addition. These findings suggest different ammonia inhibition principles in mesophilic and thermophilic digestion. It was further indicated that methanogenesis could produce a high percentage of methane although gas production was inhibited.

Poster: Adaptive Wavelength Adjustment (AWLA) for Cooperative Speed Harmonization2014In: 2014 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) / [ed] Falko Dressler, Onur Altintas, Suman Banerjee, Björn Scheuermann & David Eckhoff, Piscataway, NJ: IEEE Press, 2014, p. 113-114Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Traffic merge on express-ways creates bottlenecks for traffic flow that potentially lead to traffic jams, especially in dense traffic. Cooperative speed harmonization (CSH), where vehicles are grouped and associated to virtual speed waves for group-wise joining at intersections, is proven to be efficient for on-ramp traffic merge. Based on CSH and considering variations of traffic density from joining roads, an adaptive wavelength adjustment (AWLA) mechanism is proposed in this paper. AWLA extends CSH by dynamically adjusting the length of segments in virtual waves according to the traffic densities of the joining roads. Therefore, roads with denser traffic may have larger segments to carry more vehicles through the intersection, which may improve the overall performance. Simulation results have shown that AWLA can achieve lower CO2 emissions and shorter travel time compared to CSH with static segment settings.

Identification of Lin(-)Sca1(+)kit(+)CD34(+)Flt3- short-term hematopoietic stem cells capable of rapidly reconstituting and rescuing myeloablated transplant recipients2005In: Blood, ISSN 0006-4971, E-ISSN 1528-0020, Vol. 105, no 7, p. 2717-2723Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In clinical bone marrow transplantation, the severe cytopenias induced by bone marrow ablation translate into high risks of developing fatal infections and bleedings, until transplanted hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells have replaced sufficient myeloerythroid offspring. Although adult long-term hematopoietic stem cells (LT-HSCs) are absolutely required and at the single-cell level sufficient for sustained reconstitution of all blood cell lineages, they have been suggested to be less efficient at rapidly reconstituting the hematopoietic system and rescuing myeloablated recipients. Such a function has been proposed to rather be mediated by less well-defined short-term hematopoietic stem cells (ST-HSCs). Herein, we demonstrate that Lin(-)Sca1(+)kit(hi)CD34+ short-term reconstituting cells contain 2 phenotypically and functionally distinct subpopulations: Lin(-)Sca1(+)kit(hi)CD34(+)flt3- cells fulfilling all criteria of ST-HSCs, capable of rapidly reconstituting myelopoiesis, rescuing myeloablated mice, and generating Lin(-)Sca1(+)kit(hi)CD34(+)flt3+ cells, responsible primarily for rapid lymphoid reconstitution. Representing the first commitment steps from Lin(-)Sca1(+)kit(hi) CD34(-)flt3- LT-HSCs, their identification will greatly facilitate delineation of regulatory pathways controlling HSC fate decisions and identification of human ST-HSCs responsible for rapid reconstitution following HSC transplantations.

Wetland plants for biogas: perspectives of species and pretreatments for enhanced methane yield2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis is aimed to find out the performance of Arundo donax, Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, Typha latifolia on methane yield for biogas production and the influence of grinding and cutting to these 4 species. The anaerobic digestion results showed that Arundo donax is the most promising species to produce methane, which was 441 L/kg VS after pretreatment with grinding, 355 L/kg VS of cutting. Grinding significantly increased methane production compared to cutting for these wetland plants. The thesis also reviews the performance of 8 species on methane production, treated with different pretreatments. Phalaris arundinacea L. revealed the highest methane yield among the 8 species being reviewed. The sizes of plants after grinding or cutting have significant influences on methane production. Physical pretreatments are worth recommending for environmental benefits and excellent performance on methane yield. More attention ought to be put on techniques of grinding, not only the efficiency-increasing but also the cost-reducing. Moreover, a general evaluation ought to be performed on cost and environmental influences hence we could achieve both the economic and environmental profits from utilizing of different wetland plants.

Transformation of Chinese OEM-----Case study2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Due to the globalization trend, the transformation of Chinese OEM has become a hot topic in the last decades. Although the previous literature suggested that there were many different determinants influencing firms to be successful companies, there is a lack of combination in the context of Chinese OEM. Thus, the purpose of this research study is to find out the approach of Chinese OEMs to successfully launch their own products based on three perspectives - organizational structure, processes and culture.Applying a qualitative approach, the data was gathered through semi-structured telephone interviews with the senior personnel of one Chinese OEM company (Damekiss), complemented with secondary data collected from the company’s and public websites. The results of analysis showed different views of how organizational structure, process and culture influencing on the transformation of Chinese OEM. We found that four functions (i.e. manufacturing, distribution, new product development and human resource management) influenced the transformation of Chinese OEM in organizational structure perspective. Among these functions, human resource management and distribution are extremely weak in the organizational structure of Chinese OEM. Regarding to the process of formulating these functions, the deep understanding of the customers’ preferences and collaboration partners that influenced building distribution were figured out. In the case company, it showed a relative poor ability on distribution which would be the barriers for further developing. Building HRM process was raised as another issue of the transformation of Chinese OEMs. According to the case company, HRM was poorly organized. The recruitment did not get enough attention; the training programs stayed at a lower level. The last not least, the corporate culture was also proven to be playing an important role in the transformation of Chinese OEMs. Awareness of corporate culture as one of significant aspects influencing the entire company was found in the case company. Slogan, company heroes and rituals as an internal culture were properly used to motivate employees.

A Communication Library for Mapping Dataflow Applications on Manycore Architectures2013In: Proceedings of the 6th Swedish Multicore Computing Workshop / [ed] Tomas Nordstrom & Zain-ul-Abdin, 2013, p. 65-68Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Dataflow programming is a promising paradigm for high performance embedded parallel computing. When mapping a dataflow program onto a manycore architecture a key component is the library to express the communication between the actors. In this paper we present a dataflow communication library supporting the CAL actor language. A first implementation of the communication library is created for Adapteva’s manycore architecture Epiphany that contains an onchip 2-D mesh network. Three different buffering methods, with and without direct memory access (DMA) transfer, have been implemented and evaluated. We have also made a preliminary study on the effect of mapping strategies of the actors onto the cores. The assessment of the library is based on a CAL implementation of a two dimensional inverse discrete cosine transform (2D-IDCT) and our own CAL-to-C compilation framework. As expected the results show that the most efficient actor to-core mapping strategy is to keep the communication to the nearest neighbor communication pattern as much as possible. Thus, the best way to place a pipelined sequence of computations like our 2D-IDCT is to place the actors into cores in a serpentine fashion. For this application we found that the simple receiver side buffer outperforms the more complicated buffering strategies that used DMA transfer.

EU Trade: The Issues at Stake with China - With the exploration of International Political Econom2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis

in services since it joined the WTO in 2001. For its part, the European Union has been

China’s largest trading partner since 2004. Despite this, there are a range of issues at

projected to be. Considering the limitation of time and space, the paper focuses

prima rily on the trade issues regarded from three different angles: the internal issues

related to trade (e.g. trade deficit, IPR infringement); the external issues related to

trade (e.g. huma n rights); the ultimate issues rela ted to trade (e.g. technology). Instead

of putting forth feasible resolution to these issues, the ma in feature of this paper lies in

the analysis of trade issues in combination with the approaches of Internationa l

perspective of IPE because as Michael Smith argued “The EU’s place in the IPE is

challenging not only in the empirica l sense, but also in the conceptual sense, for

simple reason that (on the one hand) it is not a state and that (on the other hand) it

    Abstract [en]

This paper identifies the need for multiple clients to concurrently access a device community. A set of embed ded devices cooperate via one or more service discovery protocols, such as UPnP, Jini, HAVi or OSGi. We present an approach that encapsulates additional services into a Distributed Access Framework (DAF). The services in DAF are responsible for secure and coordinated access of the distributed devices in the community. The different services of DAF can optionally be implemented and executed on different devices. We specify the DAF and demonstrate an implementation where the devices are organized according to the OSGi specification.

Chairperson leadership and entrepreneurial strategic posture in SMEs: a conceptual framework and research model2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper outlines a conceptual framework with a research model for understanding innovation-promoting board leadership in entrepreneurial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The framework and research model depict the behavioural aspects of board leadership and how these are related to strategy development and the entrepreneurial strategic posture of entrepreneurial SMEs. Engaging in innovation is identified as a fundamental strategic posture in entrepreneurial SMEs. The advantages of a team production perspective on board leadership embedded in behavioural theories are discussed, as are the theoretical and managerial implications of the proposed framework and research model.

Governance for Innovation – Board Leadership and Value Creation in Entrepreneurial Firms2016Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation has identified, developed and empirically tested concepts associated with the capacity of chairpersonship to promote innovation in entrepreneurial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A multi-methodological approach is applied in five studies, comprising a systematic literature review, three empirical studies and a concluding conceptual paper.

The dissertation focuses on how the chairperson of the board of directors influences value creation in entrepreneurial SMEs. Value creation in this context is about the performance of strategic leaders at entrepreneurial firms’ upper echelons in acting and making strategic choices aimed at increasing firms’ capability to engage in innovation. Innovation is defined as the generation and/or adoption of an idea or behaviour, relating to a product, service, device, system, policy or program, which is new to the adopting organization.

Innovation has been widely recognized as a concept central to economic growth and societal development. Governance is widely recognized as essential for the support and development of innovations in firms. However, the academic literature is scarce regarding how the chairperson of the board can contribute to and promote innovation in SMEs.

This dissertation offers theoretical and empirical insights into how the chairperson of the board of directors influences value creation in entrepreneurial SMEs. In this respect, the dissertation offers a conceptual framework and a research model for understanding board leadership in promoting innovation in entrepreneurial SMEs. The framework and research model emphasize the behavioural aspects of board leadership and show how these are related to the development of entrepreneurial SMEs.

Furthermore, the findings in this dissertation provide actionable knowledge for practitioners and policymakers. In this respect, the dissertation contributes theoretical and empirical understandings of the benefits of employing external chairpersons with relevant knowledge and experience in SMEs. These insights also provide practitioners with advice on the qualifications and processes that can help them to develop innovation-promoting boards.

What do non-executive chairpersons do in owner-managed firms? – evidence from Sweden2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The board of directors is often emphasized as an untapped resource in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). However, literature and research addressing issues of boards and governance has by tradition focused on large publicly held corporations while leaving the SME context largely unexplored. In this study, the aim is to examine how board leadership and the external chairperson may contribute to value creation in owner managed SMEs. More specifically, this study adopts a process perspective by looking at the role of the external board chairperson in owner-managed SMEs and how this role is carried out by the chairperson by engaging in different tasks and interpreted by the owner-managers. The study is based on a case study and interviews with chairpersons, board members and owners of two owner-managed SMEs. The tasks and processes of the board of directors in SMEs are thus discussed. The leadership responsibility of the board is in the center of attention and an eclectic theoretical perspective is applied to the discussion. Findings provide theoretical and practical insights into chairperson’s task involvement in owner managed SMEs. Suggestions about implications and further research are presented.

Board chairmanship and innovation in growth oriented firms: Opening up the black box of leadership in the boardroom2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we present a framework of how board chairperson practices may promote innovation in small entrepreneurial firms. A case study approach is employed involving interviews with experienced board members. In our analysis we identify a set of chairperson practices related to issues such as structure, processes and culture, which serves as prerequisites for effective board work. In addition, we distinguish another set of innovation-driving chairperson practices related to the cognitive aspects of the board’s work. Overall, our findings provide a conceptual foundation for the value creating potential of board leadership embedded within the boundaries of the entrepreneurial firm and its operations.

    Abstract [en]

A critical issue when setting up a board of directors in small and medium-sized enterprises relates to the chairperson position. This study examines whether and how chairperson’s experience and leadership influence the extent to which the board of directors is involved in strategy. We rely on survey data from multiple respondents in 326 firms and use regression analysis to test our hypotheses. We find that chairpersons’ board experience and leadership efficacy have a positive and significant effect on boards’ involvement in strategy. Our findings provide ample support for the significance of chairperson behaviours in explaining board outcomes in firms.

The chairperson and board strategy involvement in SMEs2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

For decades boards of directors have been strongly encouraged to take on an active strategy role. However, while such behaviour is generally seen as an indicator of board effectiveness much is still unknown about drivers of board strategic involvement. This is particularly true for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that make up around 95 percent of all business enterprises. A critical issue when setting up a board of directors in SMEs relate to the chairperson position. In this study we seek to contribute to scholarly research and literature on actual board behaviour in SMEs by examining whether and how the experience and leadership efficacy of the chairperson influence the extent to which the board of directors are involved in setting the strategic direction of the firm. We rely on questionnaire data collected from multiple respondents in 324 Norwegian SMEs. The variables used are based on validated scales related to behavioral aspects of actual board work developed by corporate governance scholars. We use multiple regression analysis to test our hypotheses. Overall, we find that the board experience and leadership efficacy of the chairperson has a positive and significant effect on the extent to which the board of directors are involved in strategy in SMEs. To this end, our findings suggest that chairperson behaviours have a greater impact compared to structural leadership conditions in explaining board outcomes in SMEs.

Performance Analysis and Link Design of Long Haul Coherent Optical OFDM Systems2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a suitable solution due to its many advantages known in wireless communications. On the other hand, optical communications is also used as a backbone to transmit and receive large data rates with economical and good performance. Recently, fiber optical communication and OFDM method are combined to obtain both advantages in a communication link. Coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) has recently been proposed against the chromatic dispersion effect in electrical domain. According to the ITU-T standards there are 111 channels (C and L bands) can be used (191.4 to 185.9 THz) at 50 GHz spacing. Thanks to Wavelength Division Multiplexing, even we use only one RF carrier, we can reach 1.7 Tb/s (111*16 Gb/s) using only one optical cable and utilizing C and L bands. In this research, CO-OFDM technique is modeled and simulated by designing a Monte Carlo simulation. In this simulation, dispersion, data rate, SNR-BER and BER-Distance variations are calculated and results are given in graphical forms. These graphics show the performance of the CO-OFDM system in 5, 8 and 16 Gb/s at different distances for one RF carrier and one optical carrier. It is also shown that how to get 64 Gb/s data rate using the same structure with one optical carrier.

Arbitrage-free market models for interest rate options and future options: the multi-strike case2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This work mainly studies modeling and existence issues for martingale models of option markets with one stock and a collection of European call options for one fixed maturity and infinetely many strikes. In particular, we study Dupire's and Schweizer-Wissel's models, especially the latter one. These two types of models have two completely different pricing approachs, one of which is martingale approach (in Dupire's model), and other one is a market approach (in Schweizer-Wissel's model). After arguing that Dupire's model suffers from the several lacks comparing to Schweizer-Wissel's model, we extend the latter one to get the variations for the case of options on interest rate indexes and futures options. Our models are based on the newly introduced definitions of local implied volatilities and a price level proposed by Schweizer and Wissel. We get explicit expressions of option prices as functions of the local implied volatilities and the price levels in our variations of models. Afterwards, the absence of the dynamic arbitrage in the market for such models can be described in terms of the drift restrictions on the models' coefficients. Finally we demonstrate the application of such models by a simple example of an investment portfolio to show how Schweizer-Wissel's model works generally.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [fr]

A database design for IDE2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis is the culmination of an academic degree and an important steppingstone for the student on the way to employment. Academic and industrial institutionsrely on thesis students to explore research directions that may otherwise beoverlooked. Consequently, an efficient process for connecting students withsupervisors and relevant, viable thesis proposals is crucial for students, for academiaas well as for the industry. A database can serve as the basis of a software applicationto facilitate such a process. Support for tackling concerns such as data persistence, redundancy and security, which are challenges in most application designs, is built into common database systems. In this work, we investigate how a database system canbe leveraged as the foundation for an application that connects students with thesisproposals and supervisors.

Non-Isotropic Planar Motion Planning for Sailboat Navigation2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis was to explore the possibilities of using a Level-Set method to design a time-optimal path planar of a subject to direction-dependent maximum velocities. A promising application for such a planning approach lies in sailboat navigation planning, because of the dynamic ocean waves, current, wind and the characteristics of a sailboat. In the thesis, we developed an IOS application to simulate such scenario as environment properties with wind, static obstacles and the sailboat mapped into direction-dependent velocities in different locations of the environment.  Considering the wind is the main power for the sailboat, a wind speed generation function was created, based on different locations. The Level-Set method is widely used in image processing because of its various advantages, for instance, the ability to deal with topology change and stability. It also can be applied in path planning, in which the process of the Level-Set method can be considered as a continuous wave front propagating with a speed from the start location. A grid-based map was used to represent the environment. While the wave front was crossing the cell on the grid, a time was recorded for every cell, following the negative gradient direction of such crossing time, and then an optimal path could be found. In addition, we used the Narrow Band method to speed up the calculation of processing the level set equation. Finally, this report gives the results of the experiments of static obstacle avoidance, wind effects and smooth path planning.

OFFICE TAGGER: A PowerPoint Generating Web Application2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Presentations are widely used, e.g. at education and business, every dayandaround the world. Many organizations need to constantly updatepresentationsgenerated fromdatabase data, but this type of functionality is not readily availableat low cost. These days programming of almost any technology can useXML files to store or transport data over the Internet. Another reason for preferring XML is that it is platform independent. Therefore, many companies are using the XML format for electronic data interchange. The project presented in this thesis has investigatedhow to build a web service which can usea defined XML file(using the PresentationML specification), generated from e.g. a business database and returna fully functional .pptx PowerPoint presentation to the client.Firstly, related work and scientific articles were examined mostly from the IEEEXplore database. This was helpful in establish a frame of reference to buildthis thesis projectaround.Thereafter, the development phase ofthe project started. Here, technologieswhich have been developed by Microsoft such as ASP .NET and Microsoft SQL Server were usedfor creating the project code. Next, a Microsoft SQL Serverdatabase was created which stored all PML (presentationML) elements, to compare with parsed XML tags in user-uploaded XML tags. This routine would use XmlTextReader. After validation of uploaded XML filetags, the web service starts the process of creating a Microsoft PowerPoint .pptx file asrequested. The web service, having received related XML tags as parameters returnsa Microsoft PowerPoint .pptx file. The generated Microsoft PowerPoint .pptx file is sent to the user via e-mail through a designated SMTP mail robot. According to project specifications, the file can then bedownloaded.Although working, the Office Tagger project will need furtherdevelopment in the future. As Microsofthas started to support XML-based open document format, this hascreatedopportunities for converting moreMicrosoft Office documents types, not only.pptx

”Att tillhöra det svenska samhället men ändå inte riktigt”: -         En studie om andra generationens invandrares identitetskänsla och tillhörighet2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

IEEE 1609.4 protocol defines a channel switching mechanism to enable a single radio operating efficiently on multiple channels to support both safety and non-safety services. Basic safety message (BSM) is transmitted only through the control channel at regular intervals. In this paper, we propose an analytic model based on interacting semi-Markov process (SMP) to evaluate both Medium Access Control (MAC) and application level performance and reliability of safety message broadcasting incorporating the impact of multichannel operations. Message service time distribution is derived using Laplace-Stieltjes transform based on the proposed model. Due to the cyclic interactions between theSMPmodels for vehicles contending the samechannel, fixed-point iteration is used to obtain converged solutions. Subsequently, MAC and application-level performance and reliability metrics are derived based on the converged solutions. Channel fading with path loss is taken into consideration in this derivation. The analytic models are validated through extensive simulations in NS2 to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of our proposed fixed-point iteration based model decomposition. The effects of channel switching mechanism and channel fading are also evaluated by comparing with other analytic models.

Coping vid kronisk smärta: en litteraturstudie1998Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Data samlades in genom sökning i databaser.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

To avoid harmful substances it is important that emissions such as oil, gasoline, grease and sludge are cleaned by oil separators to reduce damage to the human health and the environment. But also to prevent high levels of oil from waste water to sewage treatment plants which can disturb the purification process. The aim with this work is to find out that the municipalities fulfill the requirements in the environmental framework. By supervising the 5-year inspection of oil separators according to SS EN 858 on the stormwater and wastewater network. To find out this, inquiries were sent by e-mail to all 290 municipalities in Sweden. The results show that the inventories of oil separators have not been carried out to the proper extent. The municipalities can follow the supervision pursued according to the environmental guidelines and environmental goals but an inventory is also needed to know how many oil separators are present in the municipalities. The oil separators are usually controlled with other supervisions. A 5 - year inspection of oil separators that were sufficiently good has only been made by 2 municipalities. 5 – year inspection must be carried out even if the operations have not been running for 5 years. The conclusion from this study is that oil separators have been a neglected area in most municipalities. Hopefully this inquiry can be a reminder to start with inventories in those municipalities.

"Vi behöver göra mer": En diskursanalys av svensk nyhetsrapportering om klimatet under en vårvecka 20192019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A subject that is being discussed often these days is the question about the pupils own responsibility for and influence over his or hers education. Therefore, we wanted to study what taking responsibility for ones education is, according to teachers and pupils. We interviewed pupils between the ages of nine and fifteen, and asked them what taking responsibility for their own education meant to them. We also interviewed their teachers and asked them how they perceived that the pupils own responsibility-taking worked. We used informants from two different schools, a big school in a city and a small school located in the countryside. What we found out was that even though our informants worked in different manners, they perceived what taking responsibility meant in similar ways. The key words that we found that the informants used when describing responsibility-taking were time, autonomy and participation.

Bioenergy production from beach-cast macro algae: The West Coast of Sweden2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Excessive algae growth/ bloom has become a commonly observed phenomenon in many water bodies globally due to eutrophication. This phenomenon has also been observed in the Baltic Sea which create nuisance in many Baltic coastal communities when the macro algae of different species is washed ashore by wind and wave, which is known as “beach cast algae”. In recent years various Baltic projects have been commenced in order to utilize “beach cast algae” for energy production via anaerobic digestion technology. Harvesting beach cast macro algae for energy production not only give a renewable energy but also improve tourism and recreation, as well as largely contribute towards the marine ecosystem by reducing nutrient load. However, high concentration of heavy metal especially of cadmium in macro algae has limited the potential of anaerobic digestion since cadmium would limit the bio-fertilizer potential of the fermentation residue/digestate. Different heavy metal removal technique has been suggested so far but their potential on large scale application as well as the economic and environmental aspects of the removal techniques are unknown. The present thesis focuses on the west coast of Sweden and evaluate the possibility of combustion of beach cast macro algae in an already existing waste incineration plant. Furthermore, three different scenarios for energy extraction from beach cast macro algae are compared from an energy balance perspective. The study was based on a case study, literature review and energy balance analysis. The result showed combustion of both raw and digested macro algae in an already existing waste incineration plant would give a solution for coastal algae problem regardless of high cadmium content, moisture and ash content of macro algae. Energy extraction via combustion of raw as well as digested macro algae gave a positive energy balance. Anaerobic digestion of macro algae for instance with sewage sludge followed by combustion of the fermentation residue would give more benefit from energy point of view and could be used for cases of beach cast macro algae with high concentration of cadmium.

Högläsning ur elektroniska böcker: En kvalitativ studie om en ny företeelse av högläsningspraktiker inom förskolans verksamhet.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Computational prediction models for proteolytic cleavage and epitope identification2007Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The biological functions of proteins depend on their physical interactions with other molecules, such as proteins and peptides. Therefore, modeling the protein-ligand interactions is important for understanding protein functions in different biological processes. We have focused on the cleavage specificities of HIV-1 protease, HCV NS3 protease and caspases on short oligopeptides or in native proteins; the binding affinity of MHC molecules with short oligopeptides and identification of T cell epitopes. we expect that our findings on HIV-1 protease, HCV NS3 protease and caspases generalize to other proteases. In this thesis, we have performed analysis on these interactions from different perspectives - we have extended and collected new substrate data sets; used and compared different prediction methods (e.g. linear support vector machines, neural networks, OSRE method, rough set theory and Gaussian processes) to understand the underlying interaction problems; suggested new methods (i.e. a hierarchical method and Gaussian processes with test reject method) to improve predictions; and extracted cleavage rules for protease cleavage specificities. From our studies, we have extended oligopeptide substrate data sets and collected native protein substrates for HIV-1 protease, and a new oligopeptide substrate data set for HCV protease. We have shown that all current HIV-1 protease oligopeptide substratde data sets and our HCV data set are linearly separable; for HIV-1 protease, size and hydrophobicity are two important physicochemical properties in the recognition of short oligopeptide substrates to the protease; and linear support vector mahine is the state-of-the-art for this protease cleavage prediction problem. Our hierarchical method combining protein secondary structure information and experimental short oligopeptide cleavage information an improve the prediction of HIV-1 protease cleavage sites in native proteins. Our rule extraction method provides simple an accurate cleavage rules with high fidelity for HIV-1 and HCV proteases. For MHC molecules, we showed that high binding affinities are not necessarily correlated to immunogenicity on HLA-restricted peptides. Our test reject method combined with Gaussian processes can simplify experimental design by reducing false positives for detecting potential epitopes in large pathogen genomes.
