    Abstract [en]

    This work deals with the development of an interface to control a smart conference room using passive BCI (Brain Computer Interface). It compares a genetic algorithm developed in a previous project to control the smart conference room with a random control algorithm. The system controls features of the conference room such as air conditioner, lightning systems, electric shutters, entertainment devices, etc. The parameters of the algorithm are extracted from users biosignal using Emotiv Epoc Headset while the user performs an attention test. The tests indicate that the decisions made by the genetic algorithm lead to better results, but in a single execution cannot be considered an effective optimization algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2016.

    On the Performance of Beaconing in 802.11p/WAVE Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Cooperative vehicular applications, like collision avoidance, driver assistance, and cruise control require that vehicles become aware of other vehicles in the surroundings. This cooperative awareness is achieved by beaconing, the exchange of periodical single-hop broadcast short status message that include data about the position, the speed, and the heading of a vehicle. Although several works have studied beaconing techniques both from an analytical point of view and through simulative study, none of the existing works has investigated how beaconing works on top of 802.11p/WAVE (Wireless Access for Vehicular Environment), the upcoming standard intended to deliver both safety and non-safety applications to vehicles on the roads. According to it, safety and control messages are expected to be delivered on a given frequency during a common control channel (CCH) interval set by the WAVE draft standard. The rest of the time, vehicles switch over one of available service channel (SCH) frequencies for non-safety related data exchange. In this paper we discuss and evaluate through numerical results the main effects the WAVE channel switching procedures have on beaconing. © 2010 by IEICE

    Abstract [en]

    Recent significant advances in self-interference cancellation techniques pave the way for the deployment of full-duplex wireless transceivers capable of concurrent transmission and reception on the same channel. Despite the promise to theoretically double the spectrum efficiency, full-duplex prototyping in off-the-shelf chips of mobile devices is still in its infancy, mainly because of the challenges in mitigating self-interference to a tolerable level and the strict hardware constraints. In this article, we argue in favor of embedding full-duplex radios in onboard units of future vehicles. Unlike the majority of mobile devices, vehicular onboard units are good candidates to host complex FD transceivers because of their virtually unlimited power supply and processing capacity. Taking into account the effect of imperfect SI cancellation, we investigate the design implications of full-duplex devices at the higher-layer protocols of next-generation vehicular networks and highlight the benefits they could bring with respect to half-duplex devices in some representative use cases. Early results are also provided that give insight into the impact of self-interference cancellation on vehicle-to-roadside communications, and showcase the benefits of FD-enhanced medium access control protocols for vehicle-to-vehicle communications supporting crucial road safety applications.

    Abstract [en]

    Decentralized Environmental Notification Messages (DENMs) are generated by a vehicle upon detection of an accident or other hazards on the road, and need to be promptly and reliably transmitted. Delayed or lost messages may have fatal consequences, especially in critical driving situations, such as automated overtake and emergency braking, when vehicles can be very close to each other. In this letter, the DENM latency and reliability performances are characterized over the Cellular Vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) sidelink (PC5 interface). The conducted study uses analytical tools, among which stochastic geometry, to derive performance results, then validated by simulations. Results are applied to the case of DENMs for emergency electronic brake lights, and helpful insights are provided for this crucial case and for other more general DENM-assisted V2X use cases.

    A rich portfolio of services (e.g., road traffic information, maps download, Internet/cloud access) will be delivered to users on wheels through Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs).Most of them will be offered by road-side units (RSUs) sparsely deployed along the roads. The prompt access to such services by passing by vehicles highly relies on the efficiency of service announcement procedures performed by the RSUs. In this paper, we present an analytical framework that models the service discovery and access mechanisms in multi-channel vehicular networks. The model accounts for dual-radio devices under different channel configurations for the delivery of announcements (e.g., on the control channel, on a service channel) and related switching mechanisms. Guidelines are suggested for the setting of service announcements parameters and channel configuration to allow providers to boost service provisioning. © 2016 IEEE.

    Multiple channels have been allocated in the 5 GHz spectrum for vehicular communications worldwide, however, due to the limited allocated bandwidth, simultaneous communications occurring over nearby channels may be affected by adjacent channel interference (ACI). Due to ACI, packet reception may be unsuccessful and transmissions may be delayed. In this work, we investigate the ACI phenomena in multichannel vehicular networks to shed light on their effects, with focus on the transmitter-side. To this purpose, a simple analytical model is introduced along with a preliminary evaluation. Suggestions are also provided about the usage of adjacent channels so to minimize side effects on the communication quality. © 2014 IEEE

    A wide portfolio of safety and non-safety services will be provided to drivers and passengers on top of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs).

    Non-safety services are announced by providers, e.g., road-side units (RSUs), on a channel that is different from the one where the services are delivered. The dependable and timely delivery of the advertisement messages is crucial for vehicles to promptly discover and access the announced services in challenging vehicle-to-roadside scenarios, characterized by intermittent and short lived connectivity.

    In this paper, we present an analytical framework that models the service advertisement and access mechanisms in multichannel vehicular networks.

    The model accounts for dual-radio devices, and computes the mean service discovery time and the service channel utilization by considering the disruption periods due to the switching of the RSU from the advertising channel (where announcements are transmitted) to the advertised channel (where services are exchanged), under different channel and mobility conditions. It provides quick insights on parameter settings to allow providers to improve service provisioning. © 2015 IEEE

    A dedicated spectrum portion at 5 GHz is available to provide services in vehicular environments (e.g., road safety, traffic efficiency, comfort and infotainment services). The multitude of non-safety critical services offered by roadside and mobile providers can be accessed by vehicles under radio coverage if they listen to the advertisement messages announcing the service configuration parameters and tune to the announced frequency to access the service. Due to intermittent and short connectivity periods, timely and successful advertisements reception is crucial to enable a vehicle accessing available services while it is still connected to the provider.

    In this paper, we design an analytical model of the service advertisement and access procedure for dual-radio vehicular devices. Moreover, we enhance the advertisement phase with a simple technique of message repetition and channel switching coordination, which helps in making vehicles aware of local services promptly coping with channel impairments and collisions. The model flexibly accounts for channel switching, message repetitions, access prioritization, and interference by contending traffic on the channel where service announcements are regularly transmitted. ©2016 Elsevier Inc.     A stochastic model is designed to assess the delivery performance of event-driven safety messages in IEEE 802.11p/1609.4 vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). The study focuses on the case of a vehicle detecting an unpredictable hazard and broadcasting the alert in the one-hop neighborhood. The model aims at providing quick insights into the impact of the latest WAVE specifications (i.e., traffic differentiation, channel switching) on the delivery of such short-lived alert messages. Results prove that it is accurate in capturing the effect of relevant parameters and show that repeating the alert transmission on the control channel helps to achieve reliable delivery. © 2013 IEEE.

    Effective data broadcasting is essential in vehicular networks not only for road-safety message dissemination but also to aid routing and cooperative driving applications through periodic beaconing and to spread network initialization advertisements that are mandatory to support infotainment applications. Broadcast data are neither acknowledged nor retransmitted in case of failure, which raises the possibility of frame loss due to channel errors and collisions with multiple simultaneous broadcasts. This paper aims at modeling periodic broadcasting on the control channel of IEEE Std. 802.11p vehicular networks with multichannel architecture. Unlike previous related work, the proposed novel analytical approach accounts for mutual influence among nodes, frequent periodic updates of broadcasted data, standard network advertisement procedures, and 802.11p prioritized channel access with multichannel-related phenomena under various link quality conditions. © 2012 IEEE.

    IEEE 802.11p/WAVE (Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments) is an emerging family of standards intended to support wireless access in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). Broadcasting of data and control packets is expected to be crucial in this environment. Both safety-related and non-safety applications rely on broadcasting for the exchange of data or status and advertisement messages. Most of the broadcasting traffic is designed to be delivered on a given frequency during the control channel (CCH) interval set by the WAVE draft standard. The rest of the time, vehicles switch over to one of available service channels (SCHs) for non-safety related data exchange. Although broadcasting in VANETs has been analytically studied, related works neither consider the WAVE channel switching nor its effects on the VANET performance. In this letter, a new analytical model is designed for evaluating the broadcasting performance on CCH in IEEE 802.11p/WAVE vehicular networks. This model explicitly accounts for the WAVE channel switching and computes packet delivery probability as a function of contention window size and number of vehicles. © 2011 IEEE.

    Hur långt spänner sig utvecklingen av 3D-skrivare?

    Projektet Chocolat3D syftar till att expandera det hastigt växande användningsområdet för 3D-skrivartekniken. Genom att utveckla ett nytt 3D-skrivarsystem där användaren enbart behöver tillsätta choklad till systemet, börjar skrivaren automatiskt smälta och temperera choklad för att sedan påbörja en utskrift. Systemet kan göra en utskrift med två typer av choklad, och ett koncept för hur rengöring av skrivaren är framtagen.

    Projektet består av två projektgrupper, där projektgrupperna har indelade fokusområden mot mekatronik, respektive data och elektronik. Rapporten avhandlar arbetet som utförs av två högskoleingenjörsteknologer med inriktning inom mekatronik, på Högskolan i Halmstad.

    Målet med arbetet är att identifiera och konstruera de delsystem som behövs för att modifiera en 3D-skrivare framtagen för utskrift med plast, till en 3D-skrivare för utskrift med choklad. Metoderna som gruppen undersöker, utvärderar och tillämpar är befintliga lösningar inom chokladindustrin, samt dagens 3D-skrivarteknologi. Tester för metoder presenteras för att göra kritska val för de ingående delsystemen.

    Arbetet resulterade i utveckling av fyra delsystem. Skrivaren och designen, som bas för projektet, ett extruderingssystem för utskriften av choklad. Ett tempereringssystem, för automatisk temperering av choklad, samt ett koncept för invändig rengöring av skrivaren. Det är en kombination av befintliga metoder som bidrar till en innovativ choklad 3D-skrivarprototyp för marknaden inom additiv tillverkning.

    Progress in the fields of wearable sensor technologies together with specialized analysis algorithms has enabled systems for gait analysis outside labs. An example of a wearable sensor is the accelerometer embedded in a typical smartphone. The goal was to propose a system design capable of hosting existing gait analysis algorithms in a cloud environment, and tailor the design as to deliver fast results with the ambition of reaching near real-time.   

    The project identified a set of enabling technologies by examining existing systems for gait analysis; the technologies included cloud computing and WebSockets. The final system design is a hierarchical composition starting with a Linux VM running Node.js, which in turn connects to a database and hosts instances of the MatLab runtime. The results show the feasibility of mobile cloud based free-living gait analysis. The architectural design provides a solution to the critical problem of enabling existing algorithms to run in a cloud environment; and shows how  the graphical output of the native algorithm could be accurately reproduced in a web browser. The system can process a chunk of 1300 data points under 3 seconds for a client streaming at 128 Hz, while simultaneously streaming the real time signal.

    Drones or UAVs are quickly becoming a bigger part of today's society. Delivery servicesand transportation are elds were big development is being done. For the UAVs to beable to perform its given tasks safely more and more sensors are implemented.This report covers the development and implementation of a sensor system to helpan UAV to keep a xed altitude and provide proximity measurements of the environ-ment to avoid obstacles. The system is build around the ATmega328P microprocessorand uses I2C to communicate with the sensors. Measurements are ltered and pub-lished into ROS where the autopilot can reach the measurements and make decisionsbased on the readings. Additionally, simple algorithms to avoid obstacles have beenimplemented and simulated in the simulation software Gazebo. The altitude controlsystem which has been the main focus of the project has been implemented with goodresults in both simulation and real ight tests. The system will be used in a competi-tion held in Arizona, USA where the project team together with two other project willcompete in the prestigious CPS-challenge.

    Applying the new ideas developed by the present study on the current design of WTP can lead to satisfactory results and give flexibility in terms of producing more electrical power during periods of low/medium wind velocity. The innovative ideas and methods included in the present work reveal the features of the future renewable energy designs that could, in the few coming years, revolutionize the field of wind turbine designs worldwide. Also, increase the capacity factor significantly, since the application of these ideas in areas where wind class II and III blows have proven to be very effective. Especially, when compares the result of new ideas with the current wind turbine designs.

    Testing the innovative ideas regarding the future wind turbines on a current WTP achieved a good results in increasing electric energy production over the year. For example applies the new ideas on a WTP model Enercon (E-101) will achieve an annual increase around 20% of electric power generation (wind class II, Cp = 36), i.e. when wind speed is ranging from 0-10 m/s (Level C – option 02) the production improved at the highest value, reaching up to +46%. Also, in Level B the generation of electricity witnessed an increase up to 10% when the wind velocity being always between level C with a minimum of 10 meters per second and Level A (Level A is the maximum output value, which is changing from one turbine type to the other).

    Large scale networks face daily thousands of network attacks. No matter the strength of the existing security defending mechanisms, these networks remain vulnerable, as new tools and techniques are being constantly developed by hackers. A new promising technology that lures the attackers in order to monitor their malicious activities and divulge their intentions is emerging with Virtual Honeypots. In the present thesis, we examine an extensive security mechanism based on three different open source low interaction honeypots. We implement this mechanism at our university campus network in an attempt to identify the potential threats and methods used against our network. The data gathered by our honeypots reveal valuable information regarding the types of attacks, the vulnerable network services within the network and the malicious activities launched by attackers.

    Age of Information (AoI) has proven to be a useful metric in networked systems where timely information updates are of importance. Recently, minimizing the 'average age' has received considerable attention. However, various applications pose stricter age requirements on the updates which demand knowledge of the AoI distribution. In this work, we study the distribution of the AoI and devise a problem of minimizing the tail of the AoI distribution function with respect to the frequency of generating information updates, i.e., the sampling rate of monitoring a process, for the D/G/1 queue model under FCFS queuing discipline. We argue that computing an exact expression for the AoI distribution may not always be feasible. Therefore, we opt for computing a bound on the tail of the AoI distribution and use it to formulate a tractable a-relaxed Upper Bound Minimization Problem (a-UBMP), where a > 1 is an approximation factor. This approximation can be used to obtain 'good' heuristic solutions. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by solving a-UBMP for the D/M/1 queue. We show, using simulation, that the rate solutions obtained are near optimal for minimizing the tail of the AoI distribution. © 2018 IEEE.

    Ultra Wide Band ( UWB ) radar technology shows great promise for non-contact remotemonitoring of vital signs such as respiration and heart rate. Previous studies show us theusefulness of the UWB-based radar for breathing and heart rate estimation. The obstaclepenetration capabilities of UWB radar make it appropriate for applications such as humanmonitoring, detection of people and parameters of their motion inside buildings and remotediagnosis of a person’s emotional state. The use of UWB radars for vital signs monitoringpresent some challenges:• Small torso movement during the measurement may compromise results.• Respiratory signal may overshadow the heartbeat rate.• Bio-signals are not stationary.• UWB utilizes very low-low power signals that are easily overpowered by noise.Knowing these problems this thesis investigates signal processing techniques in order to overcome these challenges and detect heart rate. In particular, this thesis investigates a new type ofUWB radar which has not be considered in previous publications. The proposed methods istested under several different experimental conditions and several different subjects. Resultsindicate that this type of UWB radar can be successfully used for breathing and heart ratedetection.

    When a cyclist is cycling on a suburban road, it’s a problem to notice fast rear approaching vehicles in some cases. Looking back frequently is not a good idea. Finding some technical way to help cyclist perceiving rear approaching vehicles is quite necessary.

    This project aims to find some proper sensor to detect rear approaching vehicles. It’s separated into three steps. First, choose the suitable sensor and capture data. Then, find proper analyzing tool to analyze the capture data. Last but not least, draw a conclusion after analyzing contrast.

    Microphone is chosen as the sensor to recording the sounds form rear approaching vehicles. ”iRig Recorder FREE” is the program to transfer audio format. And the analyzing tool is to be Matlab. Matlab audio analysis makes good frequency spectrum for each piece of audio data. According to the frequency spectrum, the unique amplitude change around 1000 Hz is found when there is a rear approaching vehicle. This change is always distinct with or without noise.

    After getting the spectrum of different audio sources, the cross-correlation coefficient between 800 Hz and 1200 Hz is computed to see the correlation level. Then according to cross-correlation coefficient between new captured data and knowledge data, we can determine if there is a rear approaching vehicle in the new data or not.

    So, this project proves that the cross-correlation coefficient of frequency spectrum can determine if there is rear approaching vehicles or not. The future work would be automatic computer detect depending on this method.

    Previous work on semantics-based multi-state programming language design focused on homogeneous and heterogeneous software designs. In homogenous software design, the source and the target software programming languages are the same. In heterogeneous software design, they are different software languages. This paper proposes a practical means to circuit design by providing specialized offshoring translations from subsets of the source software programming language to subsets of the target hardware description language (HDL). This approach avoids manually writing codes for specifying the circuit of the given algorithm. To illustrate the proposed approach, we design and implement a translation to a subset of Verilog suitable numerical and logical computation. Through the translator, programmers can specify abstract algorithms in high level languages and automatically convert them into circuit descriptions in low level languages.© 2010 Binary Information Press.

    With the fifth generation (5G) communication technologies on the horizon, the society is rapidly transformed into a fully connected world. The Future Internet (FI) is foreseeable to consist of an infinite number of software components and things that coordinate with each other to enable different applications. Transport systems, as one of the most important systems in future smart cities, will embrace the connectivity, together with the fast development of cooperative and automated vehicles to enable smart traffic. To facilitate this transformation, a service choreography composition platform is under development to enable fast innovation and prototyping of choreography-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications by automatically synthesizing choreographies. Based on the method, a smart traffic application is developed and demonstrated.

    Intersection management is one of the most challenging problems within the transport system. Traffic light-based methods have been efficient but are not able to deal with the growing mobility and social challenges. On the other hand, the advancements of automation and communications have enabled cooperative intersection management, where road users, infrastructure, and traffic control centers are able to communicate and coordinate the traffic safely and efficiently. Major techniques and solutions for cooperative intersections are surveyed in this paper for both signalized and nonsignalized intersections, whereas focuses are put on the latter. Cooperative methods, including time slots and space reservation, trajectory planning, and virtual traffic lights, are discussed in detail. Vehicle collision warning and avoidance methods are discussed to deal with uncertainties. Concerning vulnerable road users, pedestrian collision avoidance methods are discussed. In addition, an introduction to major projects related to cooperative intersection management is presented. A further discussion of the presented works is given with highlights of future research topics. This paper serves as a comprehensive survey of the field, aiming at stimulating new methods and accelerating the advancement of automated and cooperative intersections. © 2015 IEEE.

    Hyper-redundant manipulators can be fragile, expensive, and limited in their flexibility due to the distributed and bulky actuators that are typically used to achieve the precision and degrees of freedom (DOFs) required. Here, a manipulator is proposed that is robust, high-force, low-cost, and highly articulated without employing traditional actuators mounted at the manipulator joints. Rather, local tunable stiffness is coupled with off-board spooler motors and tension cables to achieve complex manipulator configurations. Tunable stiffness is achieved by reversible jamming of granular media, which - by applying a vacuum to enclosed grains - causes the grains to transition between solid-like states and liquid-like ones. Experimental studies were conducted to identify grains with high strength-to-weight performance. A prototype of the manipulator is presented with performance analysis, with emphasis on speed, strength, and articulation. This novel design for a manipulator - and use of jamming for robotic applications in general - could greatly benefit applications such as human-safe robotics and systems in which robots need to exhibit high flexibility to conform to their environments. © 2012 IEEE.

    Soft robotic systems have applications in industrial, medical, and security applications. Many applications require these robots to be small and lightweight. One challenge in developing a soft robotic system is to drive multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOF) with few actuators, thereby reducing system size and weight. This paper presents the analysis and design of an inchworm-like mobile robot that consists of multiple, independent thermally activated joints but is driven by a single actuator. To realize control of this under-actuated system, a solder-based locking mechanism has been developed to selectively activate individual joints without requiring additional actuators. The design and performance analysis of a prototype mobile robot that is capable of inchworm-like translational and steering motion is described. The design of novel "feet" with anisotropic friction properties is also described. ©2010 IEEE.

    This thesis is concerned with the usability of Raspberry Pi as the access point in the mobilebroadband network environment. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to Raspberry Pi itself;hardware required to set up WLAN and WAN; and to the analysis of suitable solutions forbandwidth aggregation, particularly the load balancing of mobile broadband connections andtheir aggregation into one logical link. The second part deals with the implementation of thesesolutions and subsequently with their testing and verification. The evaluation of results gives aninteresting outcome. Load balancing has proven to be resilient and feasible solution forbandwidth aggregation in the mobile broadband network environment where the speed, packetloss and jitter are of main concern. The second scenario, where the connections are bundled intoone logical link, has turned out to give variable results. Its performance is susceptible to thechanges in the mobile broadband network as the packets across the links in the bundle alternatein the round-robin fashion.

    Den ökade datakraften och digitaliseringen av arbete har bidragit till möjligheten att automatisera processer. En metod för att automatisera processer är med Robotic Process Automation (RPA), vilket utför regelstyrda uppgifter baserat på detaljerade processbeskrivningar. Användningen av RPA blir allt vanligare inom den offentliga sektorn. Ett exempel på detta är Trafikverket som infört RPA för att automatisera processer med målet att frigöra tid för medarbetare. Denna studie har undersökt vad Trafikverkets införande och användning av RPA har inneburit för den digitala arbetsmiljön. Studien har undersökt detta genom att genomföra intervjuer med medarbetare som påverkats till följd av införandet och användning av RPA eller varit delaktig i införandet av RPA-lösningen.

    Studiens bidrag skapar en ökad förståelse för vad införandet och användandet av RPA har för konsekvenser på digital arbetsmiljö i organisationer i den offentliga sektorn genom att presentera tre konsekvenser. Studien visar att användningen av RPA kan resultera i en initial oro och en upplevd minskad anställningstrygghet bland medarbetarnas. Nya arbetsuppgifter kan uppstå till följd av införandet av RPA, dessa kan upplevas som monotona och irritationsmoment av medarbetarna. Slutligen kan det innebära att medarbetare får mer tid till varierande och kvalificerade arbetsuppgifter med möjlighet till kompetensutveckling. Detta resulterar i att medarbetarna uttrycker en ökad förändringsbenägenhet gentemot fortsatt automatisering med RPA.

    We present PastVision, a proof-of-concept approach that explores combining thermal touch sensing and object detection to infer recent actions by a person which have not been directly observed by a system. Inferring such past actions has received little attention yet in the literature, but would be highly useful in scenarios in which sensing can fail (e.g., due to occlusions) and the cost of not recognizing an action is high. In particular, we focus on one such application, involving a robot which should monitor if an elderly person with dementia has taken medicine. For this application, we explore how to combine detection of touches and objects, as well as how heat traces vary based on materials and a person’s grip, and how robot motions and activity models can be leveraged. The observed results indicate promise for the proposed approach.

    Robots designed to co-exist with humans in domestic and public environments should be capable of interacting with people in an enjoyable fashion in order to be socially accepted. In this research, we seek to set up a small humanoid robot with the capability to provide enjoyment to people who pick up the robot and play with it by hugging, shaking and moving the robot in various ways. Inertial sensors inside a robot can capture how the robot’s body is moved when people perform such “full-body gestures”. Unclear is how a robot can recognize what people do during play, and how such knowledge can be used to provide enjoyment. People’s behavior is complex, and naïve designs for a robot’s behavior based only on intuitive knowledge from previous designs may lead to failed interactions. To solve these problems, we model people’s behavior using typical full-body gestures observed in free interaction trials, and devise an interaction design based on avoiding typical failures observed in play sessions with a naïve version of our robot. The interaction design is completed by investigating how a robot can provide “reward” and itself suggest ways to play during an interaction. We then verify experimentally that our design can be used to provide enjoyment during a playful interaction. By describing the process of how a smallhumanoid robot can be designed to provide enjoyment, we seek to move one step closer to realizing companion robots which can be successfully integrated into human society. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

    Social robots are being designed to help support people’s well-being in domestic and public environments. To address increasing incidences of psychological and emotional difficulties such as loneliness, and a shortage of human healthcare workers, we believe that robots will also play a useful role in engaging with people in therapy, on an emotional and creative level, e.g., in music, drama, playing, and art therapy. Here, we focus on the latter case, on an autonomous robot capable of painting with a person. A challenge is that the theoretical foundations are highly complex; we are only just beginning ourselves to understand emotions and creativity in human science, which have been described as highly important challenges in artificial intelligence. To gain insight, we review some of the literature on robots used for therapy and art, potential strategies for interacting, and mechanisms for expressing emotions and creativity. In doing so, we also suggest the usefulness of the responsive art approach as a starting point for art therapy robots, describe a perceived gap between our understanding of emotions in human science and what is currently typically being addressed in engineering studies, and identify some potential ethical pitfalls and solutions for avoiding them. Based on our arguments, we propose a design for an art therapy robot, also discussing a simplified prototype implementation, toward informing future work in the area.

    Activity recognition, involving a capability to recognize people’s behavior and its underlying significance, will play a crucial role in facilitating the integration of interactive robotic artifacts into everyday human environments. In particular, social intelligence in recognizing affectionate behavior will offer value by allowing companion robots to bond meaningfully with interacting persons. The current article addresses the issue of designing an affectionate haptic interaction between a person and a companion robot by exploring how a small humanoid robot can behave to elicit affection while recognizing touches. We report on an experiment conducted to gain insight into how people perceive three fundamental interactive strategies in which a robot is either always highly affectionate, appropriately affectionate, or superficially unaffectionate (emphasizing positivity, contingency, and challenge, respectively). Results provide insight into the structure of affectionate interaction between humans and humanoid robots—underlining the importance of an interaction design expressing sincere liking, stability and variation—and suggest the usefulness of novel modalities such as warmth and cold. © 2014 ACM.

    Social well-being, referring to a subjectively perceived long-term state of happiness, life satisfaction, health, and other prosperity afforded by social interactions, is increasingly being employed to rate the success of human social systems. Although short-term changes in well-being can be difficult to measure directly, two important determinants can be assessed: perceived enjoyment and affection from relationships. The current article chronicles our work over several years toward achieving enjoyable and affectionate interactions with robots, with the aim of contributing to the perception of social well-being in interacting persons. Emphasis has been placed on both describing in detail the theoretical basis underlying our work, and relating the story of each of several designs from idea to evaluation in a visual fashion. For the latter, we trace the course of designing four different robotic artifacts intended to further our understanding of how to provide enjoyment, elicit affection, and realize one specific scenario for affectionate play. As a result, by describing (a) how perceived enjoyment and affection contribute to social well-being, and (b) how a small humanoid robot can proactively engage in enjoyable and affectionate play—recognizing people’s behavior and leveraging this knowledge—the current article informs the design of companion robots intended to facilitate a perception of social well-being in interacting persons during affectionate play.

    To be accepted as a part of our everyday lives, companion robots will require the capability to communicate socially, recognizing people's behavior and responding appropriately. In particular, we hypothesized that a humanoid robot should be able to recognize affectionate touches conveying liking or dislike because (a) a humanoid form elicits expectations of a high degree of social intelligence, (b) touch behavior plays a fundamental and crucial role in human bonding, and (c) robotic responses providing affection could contribute to people's quality of life. The hypothesis that people will seek to affectionately touch a robot needed to be verified because robots are typically not soft or warm like humans, and people can communicate through various other modalities such as vision and sound. The main challenge faced was that people's social norms are highly complex, involving behavior in multiple channels. To deal with this challenge, we adopted an approach in which we analyzed free interactions and also asked participants to rate short video-clips depicting human–robot interaction. As a result, we verified that touch plays an important part in the communication of affection from a person to a humanoid robot considered capable of recognizing cues in touch, vision, and sound. Our results suggest that designers of affectionate interactions with a humanoid robot should not ignore the fundamental modality of touch.

    What would happen in a world where people could "see'' others' hidden emotions directly through some visualizing technology Would lies become uncommon and would we understand each other better Or to the contrary, would such forced honesty make it impossible for a society to exist The science fiction television show Black Mirror has exposed a number of darker scenarios in which such futuristic technologies, by blurring the lines of what is private and what is not, could also catalyze suffering. Thus, the current paper first turns an eye towards identifying some potential pitfalls in emotion visualization which could lead to psychological or physical harm, miscommunication, and disempowerment. Then, some countermeasures are proposed and discussed--including some level of control over what is visualized and provision of suitably rich emotional information comprising intentions--toward facilitating a future in which emotion visualization could contribute toward people's well-being. The scenarios presented here are not limited to web technologies, since one typically thinks about emotion recognition primarily in the context of direct contact. However, as interfaces develop beyond today's keyboard and monitor, more information becomes available also at a distance--for example, speech-to-text software could evolve to annotate any dictated text with a speaker's emotional state.

    Teaching Robotics with Robot Operating System (ROS): A Behavior Model Perspective2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)

    Robotics skills are in high demand, but learning robotics can be difficult due to the wide range of required knowledge, increasingly complex and diverse platforms, and components requiring dedicated software. One way to mitigate such problems is by utilizing a standard framework such as Robot Operating System (ROS), which facilitates development through the reuse of opensource code—a challenge is that learning curves can be steep for students who are also first-time users. In the current paper, we suggest the use of a behavior model to structure the learning of complex frameworks like ROS in an engaging way. A practical example is provided, of integrating ROS into a robotics course called the “Design of Embedded and Intelligent Systems” (DEIS), along with feedback suggesting that some students responded positively to learning experiences enabled by our approach. Furthermore, some course materials, videos, and code have been made available online, which we hope might provide useful insights.

    Current transportation systems face great challenges due to the increasing mobility. Traffic accidents, congestion, air pollution, etc., are all calling for new methods to improve the transportation system. With the US legislation in progress over vehicle communications and EU’s finalization of the basic set of standards over cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS), vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) based applications are expected to address those challenges and provide solutions for a safer, more efficient and sustainable future intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In this chapter, transportation challenges are firstly summarized in respect of safety, efficiency, environmental threat, etc. A brief introduction of the VANET is discussed along with state of the art of VANET-based applications. Based on the current progress and the development trend of VANET, a number of new features of future VANET are identified, together with a set of potential future ITS applications. The on-going research and field operational test projects, which are the major enabling efforts for the future VANET-based C-ITS, are presented. The chapter is of great interest to readers working within ITS for current development status and future trend within the C-ITS area. Gratis programvaror och information omhur man använder dessa finns enkelt tillgängliga för vem som helst på Internet idag.Då många av dessa programsviter har full support och de är mycket användarvänligainnebär det också att fler kan utföra intrång och attacker mot olika IT-miljöer utanatt behöva inneha expertis inom området. Ett hjälpmedel mot dessa hot ärpenetrationstesting, där man kan identifiera eventuella brister och sårbarheter i ettgivet IT-system.Den här rapportens mål har varit att utreda om Örkelljunga Utbildningscentrums ITsäkerhetstår i proportion till känsligheten på informationen som de innehar ochbehandlar.Detta har gjorts genom ett penetrationstest, där man på plats har skannat skolansnätverk efter sårbarheter och möjliga intrångsvägar.Därefter har sårbarheterna utvärderats och rankats efter hur kritiska de anses varaoch utifrån detta teoretiskt bevisat hur man som attackerare hade kunnat gå till vägaför att komma åt eller förstöra känslig information.Resultaten visade på ett flertal kritiska brister som vid närmare analys hade kunnatutnyttjas för att ta sig in i systemet och eventuellt komma åt känslig information.Slutsats blev därför att Örkelljunga Utbildningscentrums IT-miljö för närvarande intehar tillräcklig säkerhet i proportion till känsligheten på information som de innehar.

    Nowadays, thanks to the modern technologies, the human being has been able todevelop new techniques to solve problems present in the past. Regarding the medicalfield, it is common to use several apparatus in order to measure the vital signs. Themain drawback about the traditional methods employed for this purpose is that theyare invasive towards the patient. However, in this thesis it has been developed afurther design of a radar system so as to be able to measure these vital signs in awireless way.

    Based on a 60 GHz frequency modulated continuous wave radar chip, it has been ableto increase the performance of the measurements by adding a second radar chip.Because of this new feature, the radar system is now having a better precision byprocessing greater data matrix to analyse the targets positions and theirmeasurements. In addition, an enhanced MCU has been incorporated in order toavoid performance bottlenecks because it is necessary to handle the processing of thedata received by the two radar chips. Lastly, reducing the sweeping time (periodbetween the lowest frequency broadcast to linearly reach the highest frequencybroadcast) from 20 ms the previous design to 1 ms, which requires higher samplingrate to cover the fast sweep and provide higher flow of information that leads to fasterdetection process.

    A 3D design of the prototype has been designed to show the physical appearance itwould have once entering in production. The result is a compact and highlyintegrated radar system which will be able to monitor the heart beating andrespiration frequency of a human being in a range of ten meters.

    In  this  Master Thesis  a  review  of  different  type  of  vertical  axis  wind turbines (VAWT)  and  a preliminary investigation of a new kind of VAWT are presented.

    After an introduction about the historical background of wind power, the report deals with a more accurate analysis of the main type of VAWT, showing their characteristics and their operations. The aerodynamics of the wind turbines and a review of different type on generators that can be used to connect the wind mill to the electricity grid are reported as well.

    Several statistics are also presented, in order to explain how the importance of the wind energy has grown  up  during  the  last  decades  and  also  to  show  that  this development  of  the  market  of  wind power  creates  new  opportunity  also  for VAWT,  that  are  less  used  than  the  horizontal  axis  wind turbine (HAWT).

    In the end of 2009 a new kind of vertical axis wind turbine, a giromill 3 blades type, has been built in Falkenberg, by the Swedish company VerticalWind. The tower of this wind turbine is made by wood,  in  order  to  get  a  cheaper  and  more environment  friendly  structure,  and  a  direct  driven synchronous multipole with permanent magnents generator is located at its bottom. This 200 kW VAWT represents the intermediate step between the 12 kW prototype, built in collaboration with the Uppsala University, and the common Swedish commercial size of 2 MW, which is the goal of the company.

    A  preliminary  investigation  of  the  characteristics  of  this  VAWT  has  been done, focusing  in particular on the value of the frequency of resonance of the tower, an important value that must be never reached during the operative phase in order to avoid serious damage to all the structure, and on the power curve, used to evaluate the coefficient of power (Cp) of the turbine. The results of this investigation and  the steps  followed  to  get  them  are  reported.  Moreover  a  energy production analysis of the turbine has been done using WindPro, as well as a comparison with and older type on commercial VAWT.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this project is to analyze a data log of wireless packet traffic, and to produce: (1) models for dynamic fluctuations in wireless channel and link quality, and, (2) a design for real-time communications over the given wireless channel. The models and designs are useful in setting up real-time communications in a vehicular test track (www.astazero.com). The data log came from experimental measurements at the test track. From this data, we fitted simple models for packet losses and retransmissions in the wireless communication system. These models took the form of a combination of a statistical model for the packet losses, with a deterministic model for retransmissions of lost packets. Such fitted models can be used to predict the average quality of vehicle position monitoring based on periodically transmitted position information. Such predictions help us decide the feasibility of safe and reliable conduct of testing with two or more moving test objects.

    The vehicle plays an important role in peoples life in modern times. The vehi- cle's behaviour is a complex and detailed subject, which requiring the knowledge of mathematics and physics. Meanwhile, the vehicles' behaviour is aected by a lot of dierent conditions, such as the driver and the environment. For the purpose of trac safety, simulation is required to analyze the vehicles' behaviour. Vari- eties of behaviour models, based on dierent levels (Macroscopic, Mesoscopic and Microscopic) have been presented. Vehicles are able to interact with each other through the Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). It is worthwhile to simulate how the behaviour is aected by an exchange of kinematic data. This thesis presents a new simulator, which is designed at microscopic level, based on the graph theory. Not only dierent vehicles' behaviour, but also coop- eration between vehicles can be implemented in the simulator. A new model of collision avoidance is created, incorporating the concept of kinematics and human emulation. The car-following model is also performed for the formation of trac

    ow. Overall, the modeling in the simulator is simplied by ignoring the network disturbances. The data collected from the results of the simulation is used to display a scenario as visualization of a vehicles behaviour.

    Design and Development of a Hexacopter for the Search and Rescue of a Lost Drone2019Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Search and rescue with an autonomous robot is an attractive and challenging task within the research community. This paper presents the development of an autonomous hexacopter that is designed for retrieving a lost object, like a drone, from a vast-open space, like a desert area. Navigating its path with a proposed coverage path planning strategy, the hexacopter can efficiently search for a lost target and locate it using an image-based object detection algorithm. Moreover, after the target is located, our hexacopter can grasp it with a customised gripper and transport it back to a destined location. It is also capable of avoiding static obstacles and dynamic objects. The proposed system was realised in simulations before implementing it in a real hardware setup, i.e. assembly of the drone, crafting of the gripper, software implementation and testing under real-world scenarios. The designed hexacopter won the best UAV design award at the CPS-VO 2018 Competition held in Arizona, USA.

    Abstract [en]

    We consider the problem of finding collision-free trajectories for a fleet of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) working in ship ports and freight terminals. Our solution computes collision-free trajectories for a fleet of AGVs to pick up one or more containers and transport it to a given goal without colliding with other AGVs and obstacles. We propose an integrated framework for solving the goal assignment and trajectory planning problem minimizing the maximum cost over all vehicle trajectories using the classical Hungarian algorithm. To deal with the dynamics in the environment, we refine our final trajectories with CHOMP (Covariant Hamiltonian optimization for motion planning) in order to trade off between path smoothness and dynamic obstacle avoidance. © 2015 The authors and IOS Press.
