Employer attitudes toward hiring persons with disabilities: A vignette study in Sweden2015In: Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, ISSN 1052-2263, E-ISSN 1878-6316, Vol. 43, no 1, p. 41-50Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Individuals with disabilities are often far removed from the labour market and research shows that employers’ negative attitudes toward persons with disabilities create a barrier to attaining employment. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate Swedish employers’ experiences and attitudes toward hiring persons with various disabilities. METHODS: A vignette method with accompanying questions was used. A total of 212 employers, who were actively seeking to hire, were recruited via an online employment site and participated in the study. RESULTS: The results indicated that there is some interest for employers to hire persons with disabilities and that this depended on the type of disability a person has. Other results demonstrated that previous experience of employing persons with disabilities was linked to greater interest in hiring, that employers had greater interest to hire than they thought other employers had, and that openness about the disability was deemed as an important factor in the hiring process. CONCLUSION: The novelty of this study is its use of a vignette design to investigate employers’ attitudes in Sweden. Moreover, the results are much in line with international research. This contributes to knowledge and development of increasing employment for persons with disabilities. © 2015 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

Lex Sarah: En kvalitativ studie om hur enhetschefer inom äldreomsorgen beskriver sina kunskaper och användning av Lex Sarah2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to get abetter understanding of howunit managers in eldercare describe how they view and use the Lex Sarah, existing knowledge on the subject and how they reason around the word anomaly. The study is qualitative and based on semi-structured interviews. The study is based on a hermeneutic approach because I wanted to know my respondents ideas and experiences concerning Lex Sarah. Six unit managers were interviewed. The managers describe their knowledge, how they used the Lex Sarah in operations and how they see the ills. The result of the study shows that the knowledge of the subject Lex Sarah needs to be improved both among unit managers and among staff. It also needs to be improved in the area of reporting, there is a need for a more uniform approach to what a substantial risk of an anomaly is and when it should be reported. Today it`s classified in many different ways though it says in the rules that it should not be done. Respondents think that Lex Sarah is a good and necessary part of the systematic quality work at the same time they see it as guilt. The study has been analyzed using scientific theories organizational theories and management theories.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe how quality-work is conducted in the public sector and whether the structure of the performance measurement gives a fair picture of the quality. In addition, investigate whether the measurement itself can affect the quality of the work an organization perform. The study has been conducted in Gothenburg, focusing on aid-based interventions provided by the home service.

Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework first deals with quality, how it’s defined and how quality development can be conducted. Then performance measurement is described in terms of why and how it is used, how performance measurements can be evaluated and performance measures.

Results and conclusions: Quality in the elderly care in the city of Gothenburg is described by the Social Services Act. Quality is measured by care recipients responding to two different surveys; a nationwide survey sent by the National Board of Health and one that is designed by the City of Gothenburg and performed by care administrators. Results from the National Board of Health’s survey are part of the basis for the measures contained in the Quality Report

o   The City of Gothenburg has relevant performance measures that provide a nuanced description of the quality, but the measures are many which complicates the possibility of a comprehensive picture.

o   The National Board of Health’s survey consists of questions that are clear and relevant and has large number of respondents, which makes the measurement reliable.

o   The City of Gothenburg’s own survey consists of questions that are unclear, difficult and, in some cases, impossible to answer. The survey is an unprioritized work task among the care administrators, leading to a small          statistical basis and not reliable results.

o   A large amount of resources is spent on performance measurement, which can have a negative effect on quality. In particular, if the measurement is poorly designed and takes time from other tasks.

Functional or emotional values in B2B?: A study of marketing communication in the B2B healthcare market2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

To create value is a critical task for marketers and companies regardless of industry, and this study is focusing on the highly debated topic regarding functional and emotional values in business-to-business (B2B). Conventionally, emotional values has been perceived as irrelevant to B2B markets due to that business buyers have often been viewed as strictly rational decision makers. Other researchers however, argue that emotional values are essential since these values are the only sustainable ones, and this debate between scholars has created a research gap in the area. Some scholars therefore stress the importance of further research within this topic. This study aims to decrease the existing gap by analysing the customers perception and response of marketing communications in a B2B context by exploring the significance of functional and emotional values as well as what implications this has for B2B firms. This study has been made in collaboration with the Swedish state-of-the-art medical technology company Getinge, and in order to answer our research question and purpose we have conducted a quantitative study within the healthcare market in Turkey. The findings in this study indicate that functional and emotional values are both highly relevant in B2B marketing communication and that emotional values have a significant role when it comes to the perceptions of the customers.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the current economic environment, companies tend to use IT systems to a greater extent in order to document and process business transactions. Digitalization is seen as a driving force to the most basic and long-term changes in society and Digital in real-time is seen as an important trend over the next 10-20 years for the auditing and accounting profession. How digitalization will affect the audit in the Swedish context is a relatively unexplored area and the purpose of this study is to analyze the audit industry's continued digitalization and development towards a more automated process and to develop concepts of this change. By applying a qualitative study based on personal interviews with software developers and authorized auditors and an interview with Dan Brännström, General Secretary of FAR, we have answered the study's research question: How does the ongoing digitalization and automation within auditing appear and how can it affect and be handled by the industry? The result shows that the ongoing digitalization and automation can increase the quality of the audit since the audit can be conducted more efficiently, comprehensive and with an improved accuracy. By taking advantage of the technology, auditing is experiencing a shift toward using more data analysis and move towards an analytical review of the company's entire population of transactions. This development can change the role of the auditor. The auditor can, with the help of technology, create a more comprehensive picture of the business and help the company with difficult issues at a corporate strategic level. IT knowledge and analytical skills are seen as key competences for the auditor in the future. More complex work tasks tend to create a greater demand for qualified personnel in auditing firms, while the need for less qualified personnel will decrease due to automation of simple tasks. The shift in competencies creates a gap between the universities’ programs and the increasingly digital and automated audit process. The curriculum needs to be redesigned and should include more IT and data analysis to ensure that aspiring auditors possess the knowledge required when entering the industry.

    Abstract [en]

Human health is important, which is evident in research and in the public health goals set for Sweden's public health work. One of the public health goals includes work, working conditions and work environment. There are various factors that affect our health and well-being in the workplace. In research on managers, there is a great focus on the conditions of managers and that the well-being of managers can be contagions in the workplace and on the employees. The aim of this study is to investigate from a pedagogical perspective how managers apprehend that they work health promotion at the workplace for both their employees and themselves. The theory of science is found in hermeneutics and the study is based on semi-structured interviews as a method.

Our results show that managers use health-promoting tools at the workplace, but that time is a limiting factor - employees thus get the highest priority and sickness presence for the managers is a result of this. The result shows that learning and developed competence have positive impact on health, but that this did not seem completely obvious. Our conclusion is that managers are in need of support and knowledge in health promotion work to promote health, learning and development.

The critical role of informed political direction for advancing technology: The case of Swedish marine energy2017In: Energy Policy, ISSN 0301-4215, E-ISSN 1873-6777, Vol. 101, p. 52-64Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Marine energy technologies can contribute to meeting sustainability challenges, but they are still immature and dependent on public support. This paper employs the Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) framework to analyze the development and diffusion of Swedish marine energy up until 2014. While there were promising device developers, relevant industrial capabilities, and world-class research, the system suffered from weaknesses in several important innovation processes. Finally, the analysis identifies the lack of informed political direction as a critical blocking factor and highlights its connection to domestic market potential. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

"Att lyckas": En resa från periferin till praktikens mitt: En studie om ungdomsproffs i fotboll och deras erfarenheter och upplevelser2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Revisionsplikt & Skattefel i Sverige: Hur resonerar intressenter på den Sociopolitiska arenan?2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mandatory auditing for the smallest limited companies in Sweden was abolished in 2010, mainly to reduce the cost burden for these small companies. This created different reactions among the companies' external stakeholders, both positive and negative. It was seen as positive for business in Sweden, but there was also concerns expressed about the risk of errors in the accounts and the declarations, and that they would increase when an auditor is no longer obligated to review them. These errors can result in improperly recognized tax and increased tax error. Tax error includes all errors that have an impact on the reported tax, and they can be both intentional and unintentional. Tax error affects many parties around the company, including the stakeholders operating in the social political arena, so called Stakekeepers. They do not have any direct relation to the company's business, but they have an indirect impact on the company through its influence on public opinion and legislation. These stakeholders' reactions and standingpoints is today a relatively unexplored area within the stakeholder theory, and this theoretical knowledge is important in order to create an understanding of what is happening on the social political arena. As these stakeholders have influence on legislation, the legislators must take their opinions into account in its reports on new legislative changes. During 2015, the government will undertake an assessment of the abolition of the mandatory auditing in 2010, to possibly conduct a further increase in the limits for mandatory auditing, and thus make the audit optional for more companies.

The study aims to describe and explain how stakeholders in the social political arena perceive the tax error development, whether and how they relate this trend to the abolition of the mandatory auditing, and further what motivates and influences their position regarding a possible future limit raise. To meet this objective, the study was performed with a qualitative study in the form of interviews with four different stakeholders from the social political arena.

The analysis of the empirical data, with the support of the theoretical framework, resulted in three conclusions. The first is about the different perceptions regarding the tax development among stakeholders in the social political arena, due to their professional skills. The second is that they are driven and influenced by their representation, particularly if they are representing the public or the private sector. The last conclusion is about the factors that affect how the stakeholders relate to a possible future limit raise. These factors are their representation, responsibility and their trust in larger companies accounting.

Rör sig elever tillräckligt mycket?: En studie om pojkar och flickors fysiska aktivitet på fyra olika skolor2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which children's physical activity during school  hours  are  met  in  relation  to  today’s  health  recommendations.  This  study  was  a quantitative  research  method  through  study  with  pedometers  and  observation.  The  main instrument was pedometers which the pupils wore during one day at school. The study group consisted of 74 students, made up of 36 boys and 38 girls from the 4th grade in four schools in  southern Sweden. The  results demonstrate  that  the boys were physical active 47-50 % of what  they should and  the girls 33-36 % of what  they should according  to recommendations. The boys  took about 3000 more  steps  than  the girls.  In our  study only one boy  reached  the recommended  amount  of  steps  per  day,  but  no  girl  did. The  conclusion  is  that  the  pupils  are  inactive  during  their  time  in  school.    There  are differences  in  boys'  and  girls'  physical  activity,  both  within  each  school  and  between  the schools. The observation showed that the girls stand still more than the boys during break and the girls are generally less active than the boys at all four schools.

Läs- och skrivutvecklingsmetoder: - en kvalitativ studie om hur pedagoger uttrycker sina uppfattningar kring sin läs- och skrivundervisning2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Erfarenheter av budgetavskaffande: En studie baserad på två fallstudier i budgetlösa företag 2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Revenue recognition is an essential part of accounting theory and is used for determining financial performance. It is also a meaningful measure for stakeholders that use revenue recognition to estimate companies’ financial performance. In 2002 the IASB started a project to develop a new international revenue recognition standard. The reason for this was to increase the comparability across companies and countries as well as develop a more consistent framework for revenue recognition. Unlisted Swedish companies which classifies as larger companies should apply the Swedish regulation K3, but they also have the opportunity to practise the international IFRS regulation by applying the Swedish recommendation RFR 2.

The purpose of this study is to examine possible differences that may arise between the revenue recognition of RFR 2/IFRS 15 and K3 regarding income tax, dividends and financial ratios. The study will also show which regulation is most beneficial from a stakeholder perspective. The stakeholders referred to are the users of the financial statements in IASB’s conceptual framework. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, three hypothetical examples have been designed based on three different industries that are expected to be the most affected of the new revenue recognition standard. The hypothetical examples have then been analyzed based on the application of RFR 2/IFRS 15 and K3. The method for this study is an abductive character and within the frames of qualitative research.

The findings of this study indicate that differences appear between RFR 2/IFRS 15 and K3. The hypothetical examples show that differences occur in the timing and allocation of revenue recognition which have an effect on income tax, dividends and financial ratios. Even though differences occur it is difficult to conclude which regulation is the most beneficial from a stakeholder perspective, based on these hypothetical examples and elements. However, considering RFR 2/IFRS 15 being more comprehensive and detailed than K3, RFR 2/IFRS 15 may be considered more beneficial to stakeholders as it provides stakeholders with more useful and extensive information.

CSR och företagsstrategier: En kvalitativ studie om den paradoxala strävan efter CSR och vinst2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

From a historical perspective, Sweden is a classic example of a social democratic state in view ofits early development of labor movements, democracy and focus on the welfare state. Today, as amember state of the EU, Sweden has however come to be influenced by America’s neoliberalpolities, where companies need to deliver more and better products/services while the consumerawareness and sensitivity has increased about company’s way to invest. Research shows thatScandinavian companies, primarily in Denmark and Sweden, has a leading position when it comesto responsible corporate behavior which has been the reason to our choice of studying howSwedish companies do to achieve success in CSR. To carry out this study, we have usedqualitative analysis, using semi-structures to interview companies in different industry sectors. Allthe companies we interviewed were aware of the paradoxical quest for accumulation andsustainability, largely because of the limitations of resources and regulations. To address thischallenge, companies put a lot of emphasis on work in projects where they’re focusing the wellbeingof its own staff and by setting strict requirements on suppliers. Using previous researcharticles, an organizational theory (Hatch) and Weber’s social actions theory, we’ve tried todevelop our understanding of these phenomena.

Får jag tala om att jag nätdejtar?: en studie om attityder till nätdejting2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

With today's rapid IT development and our increased consumption of IT, the load on the computer halls increases, and there is also an increased environmental impact. To measure the energy reduction in data centers, use is made out of PUE. By reconstructing an existing data center and make it more energy efficient, the energy costs will decrease. Will the investment pay back within 5 years and can the investment handle the municipality's investment return? How sensitive will the investment be to different interest rates? Is it economically viable to make todays data center more energy efficient?

Alternativ television: former av kritik i konstnärlig TV-produktion2012Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation analyses social critique, communication critique and aesthetical critique in television produced by artists. Theoretically it draws on research on alternative media, TV studies, especially genre analysis and narratology, and media aesthetics. It conducts a text-production study of three examples of alternative television from the period 2004-2008: Contemporary Art Center TV (CAC TV): A show produced by the CAC in Vilnius, Lithuania and aired on a commercial TV-channel; Good TV who aired video art on a local public access channel in Stockholm, Sweden; and Candyland TV, a pirate transmission from an art gallery in central Stockholm.

Empirically it builds on TV-texts, web sites and documents, as well as interviews with participants. Through a study of form and stylistics, relation to conventional genres and modes of narration, it engages in a discussion about the features of a critical, alternative media text.

The study shows how these televisions work in a tradition of alternative television and connects them to tactics and aesthetical forms as found in historical examples, but also how this type of formalist media critique might inform an understanding of alternative media. From the analysis of relations between social and formalist aspects of alternative television, a distinction between alternative as ”alternative worldview” and as ”alternative expressions” is suggested, a distinction that contributes to the development of theory in the study of alternative media.

From closet-fill to toxic sublime: The aesthetics of e-waste2019In: 18th Annual STS Conference Graz 2019: Book of Abstracts, 2019, p. 58-59Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Electronic waste (e-waste) has a peculiar relation to space. It is well-documented how a large part of discarded electronic devices still remain in people’s homes, instead of reaching the recycling centres. This is especially true with digital media and communication technologies such as computers and mobile phones (ironically the devices with the shortest life cycles). This phenomenon has been described by the term “closet-fill” (as opposed to land-fill). However, representations of electronic waste in public discourse such as news reports, seldom focus on this aspect. Instead, they tend to portray e-waste dumping sites as strange, almost alien spaces. Sublime imagery invites the viewer to a contemplation over Western consumerism in a fashion recognizable from visual arts. Consequently, imagery of electronic waste has also become an object of aesthetic value in the works of renowned visual artists such as Pieter Hugo and David LaChapelle, who have gained recognition because of this inclusion of imagery of e-waste in their photographic art. The aim of this paper is to address these aesthetic qualities of electronic waste. The purpose is to contribute to the expanding literature on media materialities and waste with a conceptual understanding of manifestations of electronic waste in popular discourse. The paper draws on theories on media aesthetics, environmental communication and waste management to build an analytic framework that explores the benefits and limitations of presenting electronic waste as an aesthetic object. Empirically it engages in analyses of visual representations of electronic waste. The paper addresses the tension between aesthetic contemplation/appreciation, and critical information. It could be argued that if e-waste is to be presented and understood as an urgent topic, there might be a problem if it is portrayed as something strange, exotic or even beautiful. The concept ”toxic sublime” has been used in analyses of visual representations of pollution, and Peeples (2011: 383) argues that this construction of the toxic as sublime comes with a risk: “It may predispose people to look for toxins in the extraordinary, as opposed to on the shelves of their garages”. It could be argued that e-waste faces a similar problem. The focus on the sublime strangeness of e-waste “dumping sites” is an ineffective way of creating proximity and urgency to the e-waste problem, something that takes place somewhere else than in our homes. LeBel (2015) argues that e-waste aesthetics fails to address the temporal dimension of waste (e.g. planned obsolescence, toxicity). This paper intends to add to that argument by highlighting the tension between the closet-fill and the toxic sublime

Interventionist Aesthetics: Critical Interventions in Television and the Idea of Subversion through Disruption2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a discussion about the prospects and theoretical challenges that interventionist aesthetics have to face in the contemporary media culture. By “interventionist aesthetics” I mean a cultural form that builds on the idea of subversion through disruption. The aim is to reach a more informed understanding of what makes interventions an attractive and widely spread form of expression in contemporary culture. With artistic interventions in the TV medium as its empirical example, the paper argues that interventionist aesthetics often build on more or less spontaneous theories of the media, and in order to understand the critical potential and attraction of contemporary interventions, there are reasons for considering an update of its media theory.

It’s critical: The role of critical thinking in media and information literacy2019In: Challenging the field: Communication, Creativity and Imagination, 2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim with this paper is to explore the question what critical thinking might mean in a media and information literacy (MIL) context, and do so by investigating how critical thinking is expressed in three reports that relate MIL to radicalization awareness and counter extremism. The purpose is to engage with recent debates about MIL and new research on critical thinking, and contribute to a grounded and theoretically informed foundation for discussing MIL competences. The analysis shows how critical thinking for the most part was referred to in casual terms together with concepts such as democracy, creativity, citizenship. Those descriptions that were more detailed and concrete about what to expect from critical thinking in a MIL-framework come close to what can be described as a gnostic influence: critical thinking as a skill to reveal hidden meanings, to see through propaganda and flawed arguments. In other words, a critical thinking that asks people to doubt what they see.  This understanding is problematized in relation to writings on media literacy and critical thinking.

    Abstract [en]

The article applies Piotr Sztompka’s theory of social becoming on a discussion of media change in the Baltic region. Concentrating on three recurrent categories in the literature on the transformation of the Baltic media landscape – glasnost, mass media and social movements – the article seeks to explore how these categories contributed to shaping the current media landscape. Sztompka’s model of social becoming is an attempt at developing a tool for studying social change without being historically deterministic and at the same time getting round the dichotomisation of structure and actor in social theory. Previously, the model has been applied on analyses of social movements and revolutions. In the article, it is attempted to extend the use to the study of mass media in the Baltic states. It is argued that media change in the Baltic states was an event that drew on external factors such as glasnost and public involvement in social movements, but that the impact of these external factors cannot be separated from each other or from developments inside the media system itself

No Digital “Castles in the Air”: Online Non-Participation and the Radical Left2016In: Media and Communication, ISSN 2083-5701, E-ISSN 2183-2439, Vol. 4, no 4, p. 53-62Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents results from a study of online presence in activist milieus associated with the radical left in Sweden discussed from a perspective of non-participation. With the aim to further the understanding of digital non-participation as communicative strategy in activism, it builds upon empirical findings and argues that the online practices and use of social media, as could be observed in milieus associated with the radical left, indicates active non-participation and that this, in turn, is related to the ambition to claim autonomy. The article draws from existing scholarship on critical perspectives on protest movements and social media as well as empirical examples of online content published by radical leftist groups. Furthermore, it analyses how these activities could be understood in terms of active and passive non-participation, abstention or adaptation to social media affordances, as well as implosion of the social in digital media. The findings suggest that much of the activities in the material could be described as active non-participation and that this media practice relates to ideological positioning and values in the milieu. © 2016 by the author

The good life in an age of deep mediatization: Exploring a normative agenda for media studies2019In: Challenging the Field: Communication, Creativity & Imagination, 2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim with this paper is to address the perennial question what it means to lead a good life, and to rephrase that question in a context where human life has become enmeshed in digital media for information and communication. The purpose is to contribute to recent debates on mediatization , to relate to the notion of existential health and well-being, and finally to suggest a normative agenda for how media studies can engage with concerns over the role digital media plays in our lives. In doing so I draw on findings from my previous and current research on bystander photography at accident sites, and pathologization of media use as found in the establishment of diagnoses such as interned addiction disorder and gaming disorder. The aim is to illustrate how these phenomena initiate public negotiations and provoke imaginaries about what is a good life in an age of deep mediatization. This approach has normative as well as critical implications.

Central research questions: how has the question of “the good life” been addressed in relation to technology? What definitions or notions of a “good life” are present or implied in public negotiations of digital technology? How can the relation between digital technology and the responsibilities of the welfare state be understood in terms of “the good life”?

”The good life” was introduced as a philosophical problem already in ancient Greece, most notably by Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics. Since then it has resurfaced throughout Western history of ideas where it becomes intertwined with intellectual investment in science and technology and the modern project. Critical theory introduced a potential conflict between the rationality that governs technological progress and the rationality of the good life. Recently, the concept of “the good life” attracted media scholars’ attention, and it was the theme for ICA conference 2014. It is also behind the interest in concepts such as ”media life”, ”digital existence”, ”elemental media”, ”deep mediatization”, and the paper engages in a discussion with that research and the question what it means to live a good life under these conditions.

    Abstract [en]

This article was written in order to contribute to a discussion about a critical definition of alternative media. Asking what role alternative media could play in challenging neoliberal discourse in an age where capitalism have become immune to criticism, it elaborates on the concept of "the alternative" and the media through three sections. The first section discusses neoliberalism and the connection between neoliberal doctrine and mainstream media. This connection is described as promoting "public amnesia", financialization and economization of news journalism. The second section discusses alternative media from the perspective of new social movements and symbolic resistance, claiming that the symbolic resistance framework undermines the critical potential of alternative media, it also comments on some recent critical literature on neoliberalism and capitalism. The third section takes examples from artistic explorations of capitalism and television to propose how a distinction between social and formalist aspects of "the alternative" could inform a critical notion of alternative media.
