Almost Linear Biobasis Function Neural Networks2007In: The 2007 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks: IJCNN 2007 conference proceedings : August 12-17, 2007, Resaissance Orlando Resort, Orlando, Florida, USA, Piscataway, N.J.: IEEE Press, 2007, p. 1774-1778Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

An analysis of biobasis function neural networks is presented, which shows that the similarity metric used is a linear function and that bio-basis function neural networks therefore often end up being just linear classifiers in high dimensional spaces. This is a consequence of four things: the linearity of the distance measure, the normalization of the distance measure, the recommended default values of the parameters, and that biological data sets are sparse.

Understanding Prediction Systems for HLA-Binding Peptides and T-Cell Epitope Identification2007In: Pattern Recognition in Bioinformatics: Proceedings / [ed] Rajapakse, J C, Schmidt, B, Volkert, G, Berlin: Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2007, p. 337-348Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Peptide binding to HLA molecules is a critical step in induction and regulation of T-cell mediated immune responses. Because of combinatorial complexity of immune responses, systematic studies require combination of computational methods and experimentation. Most of available computational predictions are based on discriminating binders from non-binders based on use of suitable prediction thresholds. We compared four state-of-the-art binding affinity prediction models and found that nonlinear models show better performance than linear models. A comprehensive analysis of HLA binders (A*0101, A*0201, A*0301, A*1101, A*2402, B*0702, B*0801 and B*1501) showed that non-linear predictors predict peptide binding affinity with high accuracy. The analysis of known T-cell epitopes of survivin and known HIV T-cell epitopes showed lack of correlation between binding affinity and immunogenicity of HLA-presented peptides. T-cell epitopes, therefore, can not be directly determined from binding affinities by simple selection of the highest affinity binders.

A comparative analysis of Cisco Performance Routing (PfR) and other performance enhancing techniques - Cisco QoS and Path Control2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Eleven years ago Cisco introduced three types of applications on the same converged network and named it AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data). In spite of the initial interest and hype surrounding AVVID, the feature was and still is unable to confront problems such as: data priority, load balancing and network congestion. The work in this report addressed these issues within the network. Different Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) methods: routing protocols, Cisco IOS QoS (including LLQ, LFI and Header Compression), Path Control and Cisco Performance Routing (PfR) were all tested to see which feature would work best at enhancing network performance.

A practical network was created in which these features were carefully implemented one after another. In every step, the results were observed and recorded and if necessary repeated in order to check their validity. The results for RTT (Round Trip Time) and MOS (Mean Opinion Score) showed that in comparison to Path Control and Cisco IOS QoS (Quality of Service) mechanisms, Cisco PfR was able to generate routes on the fly during times of network congestion. This cannot be achieved with the use of Cisco QoS and Path Control which makes Cisco Performance Routing a far more superior feature. Although the focus of the work was VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) data, it is possible to construct a network with any application as Cisco PfR is able to reroute data. Cisco PfR is an easily accessible IOS feature which, once implemented, requires very little updating and maintenance.

Sources of human pathogens in urban waters2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The presence of human pathogens in water indicates the sanitary risk associated with different types of water utilization. This study surveyed the sources of human pathogens in urban waters. In order to evaluate the microbiological water quality of urban water, the enumeration of various indicator bacteria (total coliform, fecal coliform, E.coli and enterococci) is usually used.

The abundance of indicator bacteria in urban water indicates the level of fecal contamination and the presence of other human pathogens such as protozoan pathogens (Giardia lamblia & Cryptosporidium parvum).

Fecal pollution of urban waters can be from human and animal origin. Point sources of fecal contamination in an urbanized area are the effluents of urban wastewater treatment plants. While non-point sources are usually originated from diffuse sources such as (runoff from roads, parking lots, pets, leaks, failing septic systems and illegal sewer connections to storm drains). urban stormwater is considered as a major carrier for delivering human pathogens from diffuse sources to receiving waters. Increases in urban stormwater volumes have resulted from increasing urbanization and growth of impervious surfaces.

In order to reduce high amounts of human pathogens in urban waters, different methods are used nowadays to develop urban wastewater treatment plants technologies and urban stormwater management practices.

Improving Network Performance byImplementing the Path Control Tools2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Designing an IP network requires a deep knowledge of both infrastructures, and theperformance of the devices that are used. At the same time how packets are handled bythe devices. In networking infrastructure where there are multiple branches with lots ofredistribution points, performance is very important thing that a network designershould consider. A company can have different brunches, where those brunches usedifferent routing protocols. Branches of the same company should communicate witheach other. The existence of multiple routing protocols in different branches willrequire redistributing those protocols so that, routes from one routing protocol can beadvertised in to another routing protocol. The main issues, which can affect the performance of a network, are the results ofimproper redistribution. These issues, which affect the network performance, areexcessive routing updates, suboptimal routing and routing loop, which can lead tonetwork downtime. This thesis discusses the issues of network performance. It explains how to overcomethese issues using different path control tools. The authors of this thesis decided topresent some of the network performance issues and also give a solution to the issuesdiscussed earlier.

Träning, kost och hälsa: En explorativ studie kring tränings- och kostråd utifrån personliga tränares perspektiv2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

American Fast Food in Chinese Market: A Cross-Culture Perspective: The Case of KFC and McDonald's2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Culture differences play a significant role in the international marketing, which has drawn many researchers‟ attention. This dissertation will focus on how the cross-cultural environments influence the choice of marketing strategies.

The theoretical framework of this study mainly contains cross-culture theories and 4P marketing strategy. These theories are put together in an analytical model where a connection between the two theories is explained that will be used as a foundation in gathering and analyzing the empirical findings.

The qualitative research strategy is employed in this dissertation. Utilizing the multiple case studies, we choose two sample companies both from USA. The empirical data was gathered through semi-structured interviews on the telephone. Data was also supplemented with secondary data such as company web pages and scientific articles.

The conclusion can be drawn from this study is that culture differences influence the 4P marketing strategies in both of the companies in different ways. Language, value and customer behaviors of a national culture are main factors to affect the implementation of marketing strategy in the international markets.

Robotic wheeled vehicle ripple tentacles motion planning method2012In: Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV), 2012 IEEE, Piscataway, N.J.: IEEE Press, 2012, p. 1156-1161Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes a nonholonomic robotic wheeled vehicle ripple tentacle motion planning method, aiming to improve the vehicle's trajectory smoothness and avoid frequent weight parameters adjustment in different environments. In the regular tentacle motion planning algorithm, the planning result is selected among the drivable tentacles using a weighted sum cost function. Though the method is simple and easy to understand, it is difficult to adjust the weighted coefficients in different environments. To solve this problem, a geometrical ripple tentacles technique is used to choose a tentacle as a sub-optimal path. Compared with the regular tentacles algorithm, the proposed ripple tentacle algorithm can get a better performance in vehicle's trajectory smoothness with an acceptable runtime expense. And another two traits can also distinguish this method: (a) it can avoid weight parameter adjustment in different environments and varied vehicle's states, and (b) it can be used in both unknown environment and partly known environment with goal point and global reference path. In the totally unknown environment, it acts as a pure obstacle avoidance algorithm, and when there is a global path, it can follow the reference path and avoid hazards simultaneously. © 2012 IEEE.

Factors Underlying Chinese Hidden Champions in China: Case Study2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The term of Hidden Champions was first put forward by Simon (1996a) in his book and has already been a well-studied subject all over the world. The purpose of this dissertation is to figure out what are the main factors underlying Chinese Hidden Champions.

The literature part is composed of earlier research on Hidden Champions and theories on several factors that have been identified by authors, which form an analytical framework for analyzing empirical data.

Conducting a qualitative approach, the empirical data was collected through semi-structured telephone interviews with the senior personnel of two Chinese companies. Secondary data, such as public reports, also played a complementary role.

The findings of this study showed the factors of clear goal, excellent entrepreneur, focused strategy, sustained innovation, globalization and customer orientation immensely affect the success of Chinese Hidden Champions. It was also pointed out that there remain some views that are different from concepts of Simon’s.

Successful Entry Strategies on the Chinese Market: -A Case Study of a Swedish Industrial Company: SKF2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, the Chinese market is attracting more and more attention from foreign countries, which consider China as a potential partner. Making feasible decisions is the foundation of accessing success in the Chinese markets. Thus, it is important to take the first step as choosing the entry strategies, and then analyzing the variety of social environment and economic circumstance. According to different situations, companies are required to prepare alternative strategies for the changeable markets.

This is a case study of a Swedish industrial company- SKF, which entered into the Chinese market successfully. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategies that SKF used during the process of entering the Chinese market, and find out the successful factors as well as the cause of failure. Our case study is aimed to provide an answer to the research questions and generate imitable entry strategies for western industrial companies who want to explore in the Chinese market.

Our research questions are: Q1: What strategies have adopted by SKF and how these strategies worked out to enter into the Chinese market? Q2: What are the successful factors of industrial companies to enter the Chinese market?

Two experienced product managers are invited to be the interviewee of our thesis. The collected data provided both Swedish and Chinese perspectives, which reflect the eastern western culture differences and concept differences.

The results show that SKF made the acquaintance with big customers through distributors, which built up the customers’ network and company’s foundation at the early age of the expansion. However, failing experience of joint venture gave a lesson to SKF and encouraged SKF to work with independent consultant firms, which occurred to be an alternative solution to replace the position of joint venture. Although there are different perspectives from Swedish side and Chinese side, the successful factors have been concluded as unique products, marketing demands, communication and customers.

The implication of this case study is to provide the strategies that contribute SKF to be the leaders in bearing industry, which is worth to be learned and imitated by other similar industrial companies.

    Abstract [en]

The energy crisis and global warming call for a new industrial revolution in production and distribution of renewable energy. Distributed power generation will be well developed int he new smart electricity distribution grid, in which robust power distribution will be the key technology. In this paper, we presenta new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) network for energy transfer, in which distributed renewable energy helps the power grid balance demand and supply. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) will act as transporters of electricity for distributed renewable energy dispatching. We formulate and analyze the V2G network within the theoretical framework of complex network. We also employthe generalized synchronization method to study the dynamic behavior of V2G networks. Furthermore, we develop a new price-based energy control method to stimulate the PHEV’s behavior of charging and discharging. Simulation results indicate that the V2G network can achieve synchronization and each region is able to balance energy supply and demand through price-based control. © 2015 ICST.

An Optimal Replenishment Strategy in Energy Harvesting Wireless Networks with A Mobile Charger2015In: 11th EAI International Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness / [ed] Der-Jiunn Deng, Lei Shu, Chih-Cheng Tseng, Chun-Cheng Lin, Neeli R. Prasad & Tony Quek, Taipei: Institute for Computer Sciences (ICST) , 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Energy harvesting wireless network is an emerging paradigm where the wireless nodes harvest energy to increase their lifetime. Due to high potential for a large variety of applications, such networks have drawn considerable attention in both industry and academia. In this paper, we consider the energy replenishment problem when the wireless nodes not only harvest energy from the ambient environment but also may receive energy from a mobile charger. We propose an optimal energy replenishment strategy using stochastic inventory theory to derive the optimal amount of energy supplied by the mobile charger. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme not only optimizes the energy utilization, but also improves the economic benefit of the wireless nodes. Copyright © 2015–2015 ICST

Traffic Situation Estimator for Adaptive CruiseControl2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Traffic Situation Estimator is a method that analyses vehicle behaviour by monitoring and counting the surrounding traffic. This is done with image analysis that keepstrack of several vehicles through consecutive frames under good lightning conditionson a straight one way road. The behaviour of the detected vehicles is then analysedin a state machine driven counter to estimate the traffic rhythm and determine if thedetected vehicles are approaching, getting away, have been overtaken or have overtakenthe ego-vehicle. Depending on the result the Traffic Situation Estimator suggest different reactions helping the driver to follow the traffic rhythm which will improve safetyand the energy efficiency. If the user is not following the traffic rhythm the applicationwill give advice to the user how to adapt to the traffic rhythm by driving faster, sloweror optionally suggest to overtake vehicles ahead.

Laser-Based Navigation Enhanced with 3D Time-of-Flight Data2009In: Robotics and Automation, 2009. ICRA '09. IEEE International Conference on, Washington, DC: IEEE Computer Society, 2009, p. 2844-2850Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Navigation and obstacle avoidance in robotics using planar laser scans has matured over the last decades. They basically enable robots to penetrate highly dynamic and populated spaces, such as people's home, and move around smoothly. However, in an unconstrained environment the twodimensional perceptual space of a fixed mounted laser is not sufficient to ensure safe navigation. In this paper, we present an approach that pools a fast and reliable motion generation approach with modern 3D capturing techniques using a Timeof-Flight camera. Instead of attempting to implement full 3D motion control, which is computationally more expensive and simply not needed for the targeted scenario of a domestic robot, we introduce a "virtual laser". For the originally solely laserbased motion generation the technique of fusing real laser measurements and 3D point clouds into a continuous data stream is 100% compatible and transparent. The paper covers the general concept, the necessary extrinsic calibration of two very different types of sensors, and exemplarily illustrates the benefit which is to avoid obstacles not being perceivable in the original laser scan.

Network Admission Control (NAC)Securing end point devices2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There have been remarkable growths in wireless communication networks in

recent years; this is because of its merits over the wired networks such as

Mobility and convenience. Wireless networks transmit the signal over the

open air via radio waves of different frequencies, this makes it to be

vulnerable to several attacks and anybody on the street can easily intercept the

wireless data or inject new data into the entire network. There has been

existence of wired equivalent privacy (WEP) protocol (IEEE 802.11i), which

was designed for wireless network security. There were concerns of security

vulnerabilities in WEP; this made it necessary for the implementation of

another solution to overcome the weaknesses of the previous wireless

network security. The IEEE 802.1X (port-based network admission control)

which is defined on Extensible Authentication protocol (EAP) provides

effective and efficient admission control to wireless and other networks

    devices [8].

Our thesis investigates the efficiency of NAC (IEEE 802.1X) as a security

solution, access different vendor solutions, protocols supported and look into

the inter-operability of these various vendors. In as much as we support the

premise of NAC being an excellent solution, we will also make brilliant

recommendations in this thesis to be considered for future refinements of this

security solution as well as deployment scenarios for the university network.

Attitudes towards Grammar Teaching: According to One Czech and Five Swedish Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The principal aim of this study was to investigate what grammar is taught by Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in both Swedish compulsory school (years 6-9) and upper secondary school (gymnasiet), how it is taught and why. Further questions investigated what research TESOL base their teaching on, what their attitudes are in relation to the relevant curriculum, and what research into grammar teaching (e.g. approaches and methods) has revealed. The study also examined the Swedish National Agency of Education’s views on grammar teaching.

Six interviews were conducted with five teachers of English to speakers of other languages working in Swedish schools, and one Czech teacher of English to speakers of other languages working at an international school. The findings were evaluated against research into grammar teaching.

Although the Swedish National Agency of Education recommends that school years 6-9 should include an explicit focus on grammar, it does not specify exactly what should be taught. At upper secondary level, teaching grammar is not mentioned at all in the main syllabus. As the only reference to it is buried in the accompanying detailed explanatory notes, teachers tend to interpret the English syllabus differently. Consequently, the syllabus does not encourage equal educational opportunities.

Despite the Agency’s vague recommendations, five out of the six teachers in this study do teach grammar and believe it to be a key to language learning. However, the methods used by the five Swedish teachers in this study do not appear to be research informed, and three of them rely heavily on the textbook producers’ choice of grammatical items to focus on. On the other hand, the teacher in the international school clearly uses methods that are research informed. One of the problems appears to be that the teachers in Sweden do not have easy access to current research findings that are comprehensive and non-conflicting, neither during their time at university nor in their working life.

Best practices interventions to improve quality of care of people with dementia living at home2014In: Patient Education and Counseling, ISSN 0738-3991, E-ISSN 1873-5134, Vol. 95, no 2, p. 175-184Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To identify effective interventions which improve quality of care for people with dementia (PwD) living at home.

Methods: MEDLINE-(via PubMed), CINAHL, PsycINFO and ISI Web of Science databases were searched. Inclusion criteria: (1) randomized controlled trials; (2) published in English-language, peer-reviewed journals between 1990 and 2012; (3) evaluated strategies to improve quality of care for PwD cared at home; and (4) participants older than 65.

Results: 23 studies met inclusion criteria. All the studies aimed to improve PwD quality of care and most of them focused on PwD caregivers. Psychoeducational programs are the most frequently assessed interventions and multicomponent interventions produced the most promising results.

Conclusion: Due to the great variety of interventions describing specific samples and contexts, comparison of practice effectiveness is difficult. However, cognitive rehabilitation in PwD is effective when applied at an early stage of the disease. Case managers have demonstrated to reduce PwD institutionalization and the use of other community services. The studies were limited by sample heterogeneity, short follow-up or insufficiently detailed description.

Practice implications: To improve PwD homecare, health professionals should educate and support caregivers. Before specific interventional recommendations can be made, further research addressing the limitations of current studies is needed.

    Abstract [en]

Network-centric warfare is a no-way-back trend in modern military operations. The application of this concept ranges from upper-level decision making echelons to troop guidance on the battlefield, and many studies have been carried out in this area. However, most of these are concerned with either the higher-level strategic networks, that is, the networks linking the higher echelons with abundant resources, satellite communications, or even a whole network infrastructure, or high-end TEN, representing resource-rich troops in the field, with military aircraft, battleships, or ground vehicles equipped with powerful wireless communication devices and (almost) unrestricted energy resources for communication. However, these studies fail to take into account the "last-mile TEN," which comprises resource constrained communication devices carried by troopers, equipping sensor nodes deployed in the field or small unmanned aerial vehicles. In an attempt to fill this gap in the studies on battlefield networking, this article seeks to combine software-defined and delay-tolerant approaches to support the diverse range of strict requirements for applications in the last-mile TEN. © 2017 IEEE.

Employing SDN to control video streaming applications in military mobile networks2017In: 2017 IEEE 16th International Symposium on Network Computing and Applications (NCA) / [ed] Aris Gkoulalas-Divanis, Miguel P. Correia, Dimiter R. Avresky, New York: IEEE, 2017, p. 1-4Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Video streaming is an important service provided by surveillance systems to enhance situation awareness. However, in military systems, data acquisition heavily depends on the network infrastructure. In this application domain, units are spread and the distance between the sources of data and the decision makers may be very large. In the case of video streaming, the demand for high network throughput poses some extra requirements on the network. Considering the mobility patterns of the military units and the diversity of the new generations of sensors, especially those used by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), the configuration and the management of the network must be so dynamic and so sensitive to data flow parameters that manual configuration is not acceptable. For this reason, the capability of the network to configure itself to offer the necessary Quality of Service is a must. Using principles of Software Defined Networks (SDN), this paper presents an analysis of video streaming for military surveillance in which multiple UAVs are employed as data providers through an SDN-enabled network, with promising results. ©2017 by IEEE

Enhancing Mobile Military Surveillance Based on Video Streaming by Employing Software Defined Networks2018In: Wireless Communications & Mobile Computing, ISSN 1530-8669, E-ISSN 1530-8677, Vol. 2018, p. 1-12, article id 2354603Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Situation awareness in surveillance systems benefits from high-quality video streaming service. This is even more important considering military systems, in which delays in image transmission may have a significant impact on the decision-making process. However, in order to deliver high-quality video streaming service, the required network infrastructure may be prohibitively complex, or even completely impossible to deploy, if mobile data providers are considered. Moreover, the demand for high network throughput poses extra requirements on the network. Considering this context, this paper addresses the problem of highly mobile networks composed of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as data providers of a military surveillance system. The proposed approach to tackle the problem is based on a Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach aiming at providing the best routes to deliver the data, enhancing the end-user quality of experience. An extensive experimental campaign was performed by means of simulations and the acquired results provide solid evidence of the usefulness of this proposal.© 2018 Iulisloi Zacarias et al.

"Alla vi andra?" - konstruktioner av Vi och Dem i Elle: En kritisk diskursanalys av personporträtt i Elle - världens största modemagasin2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background and problem: It is only in recent years that e-commerce of groceries has gained momentum. Between 2014 and 2016, the annual increase in digital food sales was approximately 30% and it is expected to increase sharply in the future. In an article from Svenska Dagbladet, it is found that food giants are making millions of e-commerce losses, but in spite of that, they strive to sell food online.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe and explain how companies in the grocery trade are working to secure growth as a result of the e-commerce development of groceries.

Method: The method is based on a qualitative approach with semistructured interviews as the basis for the primary data collection. The sample of interviewees comprised five respondents from various grocery stores in Halland and Northern Skåne, all offering e-commerce as analternative to the physical store.

Theory: The theoretical reference framework on which the analysis is based consist of competition strategies, integration of different sales channels and customer loyalty.

Conclusion: Through the study, we have come to the conclusion that the stores work in asimilar way to ensure future growth. What distinguishes them and which probably affects the degree of e-commerce growth is how well the stores prepared for the implementation of ecommerce in the form of offering a smooth solution for the customer, and how they then work with the range and pick-up efficiency.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

ORGANIZATIONAL MEMORY SYSTEMS AS A SOURCE OF LEARNING FOR NEW EMPLOYEES IN AN INNOVATIVE CONTEXT2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organizational memory is said to be one of the essential factors of organizational learning, particularly in a part that is concerned with knowledge flowing from an organization to its employees. Often viewed as a system of knowledge repositories, organizational memory is argued to be important in various contexts. The purpose of this study is to explore an impact of the organizational memory in two such contexts, namely in a situation of presence of new employees and organization involved in innovation activity. The importance of organizational memory for the new employees can be explained by the fact that it is through facing it they socialize in the organization. Organizational memory also influences innovative behaviour of employees.

This researched is performed in a form of a case study; where the object of study finds itself in a combined context – new employees of R&D department learn from different organizational memory systems. The data for this case study were collected through qualitative interviewing of both the newcomers and their supervisor.

The results show that new employees face a range of memory systems, and this range does not depend on the innovativeness of the work they are involved in. It was found possible to look separately into the systems and methods the newcomers accessed them. The most important access methods in this case turned out to be personal communication and IT-enabled means, however a number of other methods were also found relevant for the case.

Focusing on how this knowledge can support innovative behaviour of the new employees, this study has found several ways in which both incremental and radical innovations can be enhanced. The memory systems have been found to affect innovative behaviour of the newcomers by demonstrating expectance of this behaviour, by providing “old” knowledge, as well as hints where one can possibly find “old” and “new” knowledge.

In general, the findings suggest that looking into memory systems separately from the ways to access them might give valuable insights for rethinking how properties of the memory systems have been defined so far.

    Abstract [en]

Fire Detection in Coal Mines Using WSN is an application for monitoring and detection of fire in coal mines using wireless sensor networks. The application uses BDI (Belief, Desire and Intention) based multi agent model and its implementation on sensor networks. The Language which is interpreted by Jason is an extension of AgentSpeak; this is based on the BDI Architecture. The BDI agents are reactive planning systems, systems that are not meant to compute the value of a function and terminate, but rather designed to be permanently running, reacting to some form of event. The distributed model of environment is adopted to overcome the communication overhead, power consumption, network delay and reliability on a centralized base station.

A Theoretical Evaluation of Commercially Available Tool Chain for Rapid Prototyping of Wireless Communication Systems2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Using Moore’s Law, engineers and scientists have ability to place smart and powerful IC devices,

with increasingly complex systems on a chip (SoC). This thesis describes the technology of rapid

prototyping in the field of communication systems. Reconfigurable technologies always help in the

construction of flexible systems (where hardware and software can be changed at any time during its

execution). With growing developments in the field of communication systems, DSP is now the

heart of every communication system; engineers are consequently looking for a smart and reliable

platform to enhance their production to meet future challenges. This thesis presents a DSP-based

theoretical survey of rapid prototyping in communication systems. An attempt has been made to

cover every prototype issue in this theoretical survey. The objective is to make an evaluation to

judge whether it is feasible for practical educational and research purposes. The test design proposed

in this thesis for the evaluation is a simple DSP-based Correlator.

Scientists and engineers are looking for a smart system which can provide end results, in order to be

implemented in practical, real time environments and for research and educational purposes in

    universities.

Previously we needed to make a hardware PCB for algorithm testing, especially when we had

complex algorithms which involved a great deal of work, but with the help of this thesis and other

research projects this area of rapid prototyping we are beginning to make some progress in the right

    direction.

The tool chain plays a key role for the development in terms of the evaluation of rapid prototyping in

communication systems. Currently the available methods to design a system require a great deal of

time and money along with the efforts of many skilled researchers. Rapid prototyping is a shortcut

with regards to these usual methods with appropriate tools to achieve the goal.

In this thesis our main focus is on MATLAB, SIMULINK, REAL TIME WORKSHOP and the

appropriate Texas Instruments products (Code Composer Studio and Target DSP), to achieve

maximum performance and reduction of development time. The tools which are discussed are

actively involved in the design process of systems using the rapid prototyping development

technique. The basic system design is conducted using the model based on the design of tools in

Math Works software, consisting of MATLAB and SIMULINK using their tool and block sets.

Using these tools many applications for educational purposes and on a commercial level have been

implemented [2]. Here a DSP application, an FFT-based (Fast Fourier Transform) Correlator is

proposed that measures the phase delay of the two transmitted base band signals that are sampled at

different rates. Four major phases are involved for the purposes of rapid prototyping : 1) - the system

algorithm is designed and implemented in MATLAB and SIMULINK, 2) – generation of the

standard ANSI C code for this designed model has been done by using REAL TIME WORK SHOP,

3)- implementation of this C code on DSP/Microprocessor-based hardware using an interface and

4)- carrying out a performance evaluation of this tool chain, i.e. whether it is feasible for practical,

commercial and educational research purposes, and how these developments are overcoming the

barriers for the implementation of DSP algorithms in communication systems for commercial and

educational use. The tool chain acts as a bridge in between the input resources and output results

after implementation on hardware. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the thesis. Chapter 2 describes

    iv

the main tools involved in the rapid prototyping revolution. Chapter 3 describes the role of every

tool in the flow of rapid prototyping processes. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the previously

implemented systems using rapid tool chains, their results and our proposed model and

recommendations. Chapter 5 concludes the results grasped from the previously implemented tool

chains and theoretical survey made in this thesis.

Self-organising Methods for Malfunction Prediction: A Volvo bus case study2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis project investigates approaches for malfunction prediction using unsupervised, self-organized models, with an orientation on bus fleets. Certain bus malfunctions are not predictable with conventional methods and preventive replacements are too costly and time consuming. Malfunctions that could result in interruption of service or on degradation of safety  are of high priority to predict. The settings of the desired application define the following constraints: definition of a model by an expert is not desirable as it is not a scalable solution, ambient conditions or usage schedule must not affect the prediction, data communication between the systems is limited so data must be compressed with relevant to the problem features. In this work, definition of normal or faulty operation is not handled by an expert, but using the Wisdom of the crowd idea and Consensus Self-organized models for fault detection (COSMO), or by the system's past state by monitoring an autoencoder's reconstruction error. In COSMO each system constructs a model describing its condition and then all distances between models are estimated to find the Most Central Pattern (MCP), which is considered the normal state of the system. The measure of deviation is the tendency of a system's model to be farther from the MCP after a sequence of observations, expressed as a probability that the deviation is incidental.  Factors that apply to the total of systems, such as the weather conditions are thus minimized. The algorithms approach the problem from the scopes of: linear and non linear relations between signals, distribution of values of a single signal, spectrum information of a single signal. This is achieved by constructing relevant models of each observed system (bus). The performance of the implemented algorithms is investigated using ROC curves and real bus fleet data, targeting at predicting a set of malfunctions of the air pressure system.More tests are performed using artificial data with injected malfunctions, to evaluate the performance of the methods. By applying the method on artificial data, the ability of different methods to detect different malfunctions is exhibited.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Handledare:                       Klaus Solberg Soilen

    Examinator:                      Ulf Aagerup

Empiri:                              Affärsmodellen gratis har delats in i fyra underkategorier.

Specifying Run-time Reconfiguration in Processor Arrays using High-level language2010In: WRC 2010: 4th HiPEAC Workshop on Reconfigurable Computing, Pisa, 2010, p. 1-10Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The adoption of run-time reconfigurable parallel architectures for high-performance embedded systems is constrained by the lackof a unified programming model which can express both parallelism and reconfigurability. We propose to program an emerging class of reconfigurable processor arrays by using the programming model of occam-pi and describe how the extensions of channel direction specifiers, mobile data, dynamic process invocation, and process placement attributes can be used to express run-time reconfiguration in occam-pi. We present implementations of DCT algorithm to demonstrate the applicability of occam-pi to express reconfigurability. We concluded that occam-pi appears to be a suitable programming model for programming run-time reconfigurable processor arrays.

Programming Real-time Autofocus on a Massively Parallel Reconfigurable Architecture using Occam-pi2011In: Proceedings of the 19th Annual IEEE International Symposium on Field-Programmable Custom Computing Machines (FCCM'2011), Los Alamitos, Calif.: IEEE Computer Society, 2011, p. 194-201Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recently we proposed occam-pi as a high-level language for programming massively parallel reconfigurable architectures. The design of occam-pi incorporates ideas from CSP and pi-calculus to facilitate expressing parallelism and reconfigurability. The feasability of this approach was illustratedby building three occam-pi implementations of DCT executing on an Ambric. However, because DCT is a simple and well studied algorithm it remained uncertain whether occam-pi would also be effective for programming novel, more complex algorithms.

In this paper, we demonstrate the applicability of occam-pi for expressing various degrees of parallelism by implementinga significantly large case-study of focus criterion calculation inan autofocus algorithm on the Ambric architecture. Autofocus is a key component of synthetic aperture radar systems. Two implementations of focus criterion calculation were developedand evaluated on the basis of performance. The comparison of the performance results with a single threaded software implementation of the same algorithm show that the throughput of the two implementations are 11x and 23x higher than the sequential implementation despite a much lower (9x) clock frequency. The two designs are, respectively, 29x and 40x moreenergy efficient.

Evigt unga? -om några unga mäns narkotikabruk, känslor, vardagsliv och framtidsutsikter2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Femtosecond x-ray diffraction reveals a liquid–liquid phase transition in phase-change materials2019In: Science, ISSN 0036-8075, E-ISSN 1095-9203, Vol. 364, no 6445, p. 1062-1067Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In phase-change memory devices, a material is cycled between glassy and crystalline states. The highly temperature-dependent kinetics of its crystallization process enables application in memory technology, but the transition has not been resolved on an atomic scale. Using femtosecond x-ray diffraction and ab initio computer simulations, we determined the time-dependent pair-correlation function of phase-change materials throughout the melt-quenching and crystallization process. We found a liquid–liquid phase transition in the phase-change materials Ag4In3Sb67Te26 and Ge15Sb85 at 660 and 610 kelvin, respectively. The transition is predominantly caused by the onset of Peierls distortions, the amplitude of which correlates with an increase of the apparent activation energy of diffusivity. This reveals a relationship between atomic structure and kinetics, enabling a systematic optimization of the memory-switching kinetics. © 2019 American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Robust Control Solution of a Wind Turbine2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Power generation using wind turbines is a highly researched control field.

Many control designs have been proposed based on continuous-time models

like PI-control, or state observers with state feedback but without special

regard to robustness to model uncertainties. The aim of this thesis was to

design a robust digital controller for a wind turbine.

The design was based on a discrete-time model in the polynomial framework

that was derived from a continuous-time state-space model based on

data from a real plant. A digital controller was then designed by interactive

pole placement to satisfy bounds on sensitivity functions.

As a result the controller eliminates steady state errors after a step

response, gives sufficient damping by using dynamical feedback, tolerates

changes in the dynamics to account for non linear effects, and avoids feedback

of high frequency un modeled dynamics.

The Role of Arts in Nordic Society: Health and Lifestyle2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The role of arts in both formal and non-formal education has been scientifically demonstrated to create positive outcomes in people to deal with all kinds of social problems in daily life. At present, there are international public and private institutions that support this view, such as the International Arts Education Week, celebrated for the first time by UNESCO on 21-27 May 2012 when not only artists participated, but also educators, researchers, NGO actors, and international associations. This provides us with a wider perspective on how arts and education can play an interdisciplinary role in society.

The aim of this research is to study how arts (e.g., performative arts, literature, film) interact with and affect Nordic society; the kind of practices, contributions and challenges that exist within the cultural and educational sectors (based on three case studies) and their relationship between the government in the form of cultural policies in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in support of the well-being of the Nordic lifestyle whenever applying a wider perspective to the role of the arts in society.

This qualitative study is composed of three case studies, which explore the role of arts in three Nordic institutions (two public ones and a private one): 1) The Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland; 2) Skissernas Museum - Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art in Lund, Sweden; and 3) Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humbaelek, Denmark. The empirical material collected has been done through the usage of the hermeneutics—texts, semi-structured interviews of professionals (two art educators with multidisciplinary backgrounds, two art historians, and a museum guide), publications, catalogues, and active participation in cultural/educational activities in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The data collected is analyzed within the framework of the reflexive methodology. “The Theory of Communicative Action” by Jürgen Habermas aims to understand the multidisciplinary relationship among the artistic/educational institutions, society, and government as support for the well-being and sustainability of Nordic society.

The results will reveal a multidisciplinary application of the arts as support to Nordic welfare, healthand lifestyle. The results will also show how arts can be included in people’s lifestyles in an organic manner, being a benefit for the well-being of the society and supporting the sustainability of Nordic welfare when people have a wider understanding of the application of the arts in their lives, for instance, through literature, concerts, performances, but also, attending to festivals, arts and crafts activities, gardens, parks, and even experiencing architecture.
