    Abstract [sv]

Vision Based Perception for Mechatronic Weed Control2005Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The use of computer-based signal processing and sensor technology to guide and control different types of agricultural field implements increases the performance of traditional implements and even makes it possible to create new ones. This thesis increases the knowledge on vision-based perception for mechatronic weed control. The contributions are of four different kinds:

First, a vision-based system for row guidance of agricultural field machinery has been proposed. The system uses a novel method, based on the Hough transform, for row recognition of crop rows.

Second is a proposal for a vision-based perception system to discriminate between crops and weeds, using images from real situations in the field. Most crops are cultivated in rows and sown in a defined pattern, i.e. with a constant inter-plant distance. The proposed method introduces the concept of using these geometrical properties of the scene (context) for single plant recognition and localization. A mathematical model of a crop row has been derived that models the probability for the positions of consecutive crops in a row. Based on this mathematical model two novel methods for context-based classification between crops and weeds have been developed. Furthermore, a novel method that combines geometrical features of the scene (context) and individual plant features has been proposed. The method has been evaluated in two datasets of images of sugar beet rows. The classification rate was 92 % and 98 %, respectively.

The third contribution is the design of a mobile agricultural robot equipped with these perception systems and a mechanical weeding tool intended for intra-row weed control in ecologically cultivated crops.

The fourth contribution is a demonstration of the feasibility of the perception systems in real field environments, especially with respect to robustness and real-time performance. The row guidance system has been implemented in three different row cultivators and performed inter-row weed control at two commercial farms. The robot has proven to be able to follow a row structure by itself, while performing weed control within the seed line of a crop row, i.e. intra-row cultivation.

A mobile robot for mechanical weed control2003In: International Sugar Journal, ISSN 0020-8841, Vol. 105, no 1250, p. 89-95Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents an autonomous agricultural mobile robot for mechanical weed control in outdoor environments. The robot employs two vision systems: one grey-level vision system that is able to recognise the row structure formed by the crops and to guide the robot along the rows and a second, colour-based vision system that is able to identify a single crop among weed plants. This vision system controls a weeding-tool that removes the weed within the row of crops. It has been shown that colour vision is feasible for single plant identification, i.e. discriminating between crops and weeds. The system as a whole has been verified, showing that the subsystems are able to work together effectively. A first trial in a greenhouse showed that the robot is able to manage weed control within a row of sugar beet plants.

    A vision based row-following system for agricultural field machinery2005In: Mechatronics (Oxford), ISSN 0957-4158, E-ISSN 1873-4006, Vol. 15, no 2, p. 251-269Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the future, mobile robots will most probably navigate through the fields autonomously to perform different kind of agricultural operations. As most crops are cultivated in rows, an important step towards this long-term goal is the development of a row-recognition system, which will allow a robot to accurately follow a row of plants. In this paper we describe a new method for robust recognition of plant rows based on the Hough transform. Our method adapts to the size of plants, is able to fuse information coming from two rows or more and is very robust against the presence of many weeds. The accuracy of the position estimation relative to the row proved to be good with a standard deviation between 0.6 and 1.2 cm depending on the plant size. The system has been tested on both an inter-row cultivator and a mobile robot. Extensive field tests have showed that the system is sufficiently accurate and fast to control the cultivator and the mobile robot in a closed-loop fashion with a standard deviation of the position of 2.7 and 2.3 cm, respectively. The vision system is also able to detect exceptional situations by itself, for example the occurrence of the end of a row.

The Korean Peninsula: Where the Cold War Never Ended: The Foreign Policy of the Republic of Korea on a peaceful reunification with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines different foreign policies of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) towards the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) with regards to a peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula. The paper uses the theoretical framework of Social Constructivism to analyze what impact the different foreign policies of South Korea towards North Korea have had on their relations, thus providing an understanding of what impact those foreign policies have had on the peaceful reunification process of the Korean Peninsula. The paper will also look at the First Korean Nuclear Crisis, the Second Korean Nuclear Crisis, the ROKS Cheonan sinking and the shelling of Yeonpyeong, and with the help from the theoretical framework of Social Constructivism, analyze what impact those incidents have had on South Korea’s foreign policy and relations with North Korea, thus providing an understanding what impact those incidents have had on the peaceful reunification process of the Korean Peninsula.

Ledarskap i en agil verksamhet: En kvalitativ studie om hur ledarskapet påverkas vid en förändring2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to explore and understand how leadership is affected when an organization was undergoing a change to an agile business. The background to the survey is based on the traditional view of leadership as the manager led and distributed work. During the 1950s, changed the perception of management and labor in which employees became more involved in the work process.

Starting from this, our research focused on the effects of leadership that occurs when an organization goes from "command and control" to "empowerment". Hence, we will address the following questions: How has the control (across teams) changed for the line manager in the transition from Classic Waterfall to Agile, How has the change affected the line manager's information retrieval to implement IPM-dialogues and How does the change in style of leadership impact the organization when entering an agile organization.

We have used a qualitative method in which eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with line managers from two departments to collect the empirical material. The results have indicated that the physical location affects both the control and management style of line managers. Leadership style is also influenced largely by the employees' level of maturity and that the organization is in process of a change.

    Abstract [en]

Sveriges Tekniska Forskningsinstitut, SP, has recently invested in a pulsed solar simulator to measure and characterize photovoltaic modules. The following report investigates the differences in the analysis between the new solar simulator and SP's existing pulsed solar simulator. All measurements have been performed on four different solar modules, two solar modules of type CIS and two solar modules of type crystalline silicon. We have also carried out practical measurements to see which environmental factors that affect the analysis from the new solar simulator. The surrounding factors consisted of ambient lighting, reflections from the new solar simulator and soiling of the monitor cell. The results show a difference between the quantified values of the new and existing solar simulator, where most of the measurements in the existing solar simulator are higher. The differences are probably due to measurements being made at a higher irradiance level than according to the standard. Furthermore, the results show that there are environmental factors affecting the analysis from the new solar simulator; a soiled monitor cell have the greatest influence on the outcome.

Ultraljuddiagnostik; Ett utbildningsprogram för hjärtsjuksköterskor2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

LEDARSKAP OCH PERSONLIGHET INOM IDROTTEN: Prefererat ledarskap i relation tillpersonlighet hos lagidrottare på elitjuniornivå2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between elite junior athlete’s   leadership preferences and their personality. Study participants consisted of 167 elite juniors, aged 16-20 years (M = 17,29). Subjects were both male (116) and female (51), and active in interactive sports. Participants were asked to answer three questionnaires (1) Demographic facts (2) Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS) (3) NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Subsequent correlation analyses showed significant associations between Extraversion, Democratic behavior and Positive Feedback, and between Neuroticism and social supportive behavior. The results also showed a significant correlation between the personality trait Agreeableness and Autocratic and Social support behavior. One conclusion from the results is that preferred leadership is a function of the athlete’s personality traits. This suggests that leadership in sports should be characterized by flexibility and adaptation to athlete’s individual differences to a greater extend. Examples of practical implications and future research are presented.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on semi-structured interviews focusing on staff members’ opinions about potential risk factors that could threaten patient safety. The aim was to acquire more in-depth knowledge about the causes of patient injuries. The study, which was conducted at a children's hospital, has a qualitative approach that is influenced by the critical incident technique. A total of 28 persons were interviewed. Analysis of the data resulted in five qualitatively differentiated categories of potential risk factors: a large influx of patients, a lack of professional experience, a lack of inter-professional communication and cooperation, and deficiencies related to work hours and to the physical environment. The results reflect a complex picture where the risks, as described by the informants, can either alone or in concert directly or indirectly affect the individual in the practice of his or her profession or contribute to a mistake.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This paper is based on interviews, a literature study and seminars. It describes the

situation in Halland when it comes to multi-story housing built in timber. From 1874

to 1994, Sweden had a regulation that prohibited construction of timber houses with

more than two stories as a result of big city fires. After the regulation was revoked,

people started to build multi-story houses in timber again. Compared to the rest of

the country there was not that many built in Halland. Construction entrepreneurs

here possess the right competence and it is close to the raw material. Even though

that, there are only five multi-story houses built in the county.

Result from this study shows that the main problem of implementing multi-story

housing built in timber is biases and lack of knowledge. Many of the players in the

construction industry do not base their decisions on fact when it comes to choose

timber or not. This in combination with a lack of information regarding financial

issues and unfavorable regulations has resulted in a slow development of the

implementation of multi-story houses. The reasons behind this are discussed in the

paper and some possibilities of change are presented.

    Abstract [sv]

Värdering av företag1993Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Keynes återkomst?2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to, by using qualitative interviews, describe experiences of mediated social interaction on the Internet for clients in drug treatment. We wanted to examine how this affects clients' ability to change their lives, their identity and social relations. We conducted individual interviews with three people who work at a treatment center where clients have free access to the Internet and with one client on the same centre, and group interviews with a total of seven people who had varied experience in drugtreatment.

The results show a general negative view of mediated social interaction during the treatment. The main risk is that clients need to break their connection to “the addiction world” and the Internet complicates this. Contact with friends and acquaintances in “the addiction world” may lead to the client interrupting his or hers treatment. Other risks that our results show is that clients can easily order drugs on the Internet, that you do not focus on the treatment and it makes it more difficult to build an identity and to be part of a community in the sober world.

    Abstract [sv]
The objective of this bachelor thesis has been to develope a working prorotype of harddisc interface. The interface is intended to increase the performance without beeing expensive. No software drivers should be needed to use the interface. Finding reference sources, especially regarding the DSP has been very difficult which has delayed the project. We have not reached our objective to build our prototype. The FPGA source is completed and simulations of the circuits works. The DSP c-code is partially finished, but lacks a few pieces which could not be written without the hardware. The hardware is designed but not realized.

    Abstract [en]

This report will be about a mechanical design project that has been developed by Christian Wikman and Oliver Öhman. The assignment was given by EcoistVehicleTM to complete a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Halmstad University.

Princip- och Primärkonstruktion (Olsson, 1995), Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics (Gillespie, 1992) and a large amount of research on the web has been used as the foundation for the method that’s been used all through this project.

EcoistVehicleTM is a vehicle project started by Thomas Koch. It is an electrically powered, single seat, three wheeled vehicle that's driven by a single rear wheel. The idea behind the car is to transport the driver to his destination in an environmentally friendly way. The car is suited for commuting in the countryside with a range of 40-50km. The purpose of the assignment that was given in the spring of 2017 was to look into faster methods of designing and manufacturing a swingarm for the vehicle.

Our assignment was to design and possibly manufacture a swingarm for the driving rear wheel that should fit the specifications of the car and have a relatively fast manufacturing process for a series of 10-20 cars. Our mentor and taskmaster has a request to 3D-print the larger parts of the swingarm then after work the mounting surfaces and mating surfaces with milling.

Several manufacturing processes used in the automotive industry for the production of motorcycle swingarms will be screened and compared to get the method that will fit this project.

The authors have contributed with a higher knowledge of 3D-printing, specifically aluminum, different design concepts together with analysis of the design to test the solidity of the final product.

    Abstract [sv]
To reduce the cost of development to a minimum and secure delivery in software projects is a very anxious objective. A special kind of computer systems, are the so-called embedded systems. These systems often perform some sort of control. There are often the control-technician and not the programmer who develops these systems. The system-developer will be able to programme in a graphical and well-known, mathematical tool -Simulink. This will lead to that the development-time will decrease. The aim of this project is to adapt Simulink and Real-Time Workshop, so that a Simulink-model can be transferred and executed on a stand-alone hardware. This hardware has been developed by Halmstad University and Chalmers University of Technology.

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av verksamma faktorer i processorienterad omvårdnadshandledning i grupp, ett år efter avslutad sjuksköterskeutbildning: Nurses' experiences of the active factors in process-oriented clinical group supervision, one year after degree2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe nurses' experiences of factors enhancing professional development trough process-oriented group super- vision, one year after completed nursing education. The objective of process-oriented group supervision in nursing care is to support students’ development of their ability to manage complex care situations. The attitude of the supervisor and the students’ willingness to reflect on them- selves have been described as playing key roles in process-oriented group supervision during nursing education. The link to nursing science has also been described as significant by several researchers, but some supervisors are not using nursing science as a foundation in group supervision for nurses. The analysis was completed using a qualitative content analysis method based on interviews with 18 nurses resulting in the general theme “Process oriented pedagogy” which is presented in three categories: Supervisor’s character, Pedagogical strategy and Reflective communication. The findings suggest that the supervisor's personal qualities in combination with an inspiring structure are impor- tant to promote the participants’ reflective communication during the group supervision sessions. Reflective communication supports the students’ development towards a deeper professional knowledge. Further research should focus on the use of nursing science as a foundation in clinical process-oriented group supervision.

Datormodellen Diasock2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis work has been carried out in collaboration with a specialist physician and Hälsoteknikcentrum Halland. The project is a part of an innovation project which involves developing a health scanner that will be able to carry out standard measurements on patients and thereby facilitate and streamline healthcare. The part in this report concerns the development of the booth itself for the complete product as well as the attachment of the technology. The thesis objective is about developing a concept that automatically adjusts the instruments depending on the patient being measured, as well as creating an optimal environment where the measurements can be performed correctly.

By using brainstorming and a functional analysis, a number of concepts could be developed. These were then evaluated against the analysis and further developed to match the specification of requirements and other guidelines. The result was a booth, adapted for both sitting and standing positions, with an automatically closing folding wall and with an arm that keeps the patient at the right distance from the measuring devices. The project has also included an investigation of, as well as discussion about, the materials and manufacturing methods that may be used in a future production of the concept.

The result was a virtual model, ready to be used for the production of a real-size prototype. In addition, the model was also used to visualize the concept in the form of images and animations made in KeyShot 6.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study emphasizes the social environment to identical twins identity. How does the identity of two genetically identical individuals who grow up in the same environment develop? The study is based on qualitative interviews with ten identical twins, who also want to give a glimpse of how identical twins experience their relationship with their twin and how they experience they are perceived by the social environment. We have been using various identity theories that emphasize interpersonal and group processes in our theoretical framework, also Cooley's theory of the looking glass self and the social comparison theory presented by Festinger. The result showed how identical twins identity was perceived in relation to its twin, where the social environment had a significant role for identical twins identity but also how comparisons directly affected their self-esteem. We would also note that all identical twins shared the experience of safety and fellowship in relation to its twin.

Multiview Face Detection Using Gabor Filter and Support Vector Machines2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Face detection is a preprocessing step for face recognition algorithms. It is the localization of face/faces in an image or image sequence. Once the face(s) are localized, other computer vision algorithms such as face recognition, image compression, camera auto focusing etc are

applied. Because of the multiple usage areas, there are many research efforts in face processing. Face detection is a challenging computer vision problem because of lighting conditions, a high degree of variability in size, shape, background, color, etc. To build fully

automated systems, robust and efficient face detection algorithms are required.

Numerous techniques have been developed to detect faces in a single image; in this project we have used a classification-based face detection method using Gabor filter features. We have designed five frequencies corresponding to eight orientations channels for extracting facial features from local images. The feature vector based on Gabor filter is used as the input of the face/non-face classifier, which is a Support Vector Machine (SVM) on a reduced feature

subspace extracted by using principal component analysis (PCA).

Experimental results show promising performance especially on single face images where 78% accuracy is achieved with 0 false acceptances.

Don’t Ask Me Why: Preschool Teachers’ Knowledge in Technology as a Determinant of Leadership Behavior2018In: Journal of Technology Education, ISSN 1045-1064, Vol. 29, no 2, p. 4-19Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the Swedish preschool curriculum, technology education is emphasized as one of the most significant pedagogical areas. Particularly, the teacher’s role is emphasized: It is the preschool teacher’s responsibility to stimulate and challenge children’s interest in science and technology. Unfortunately, prior research indicates that preschool teachers feel uncertain about what technology is and the extent of their knowledge on the topic. Based on the path–goal theory, this article will explore how preschool teachers’ knowledge of technology influence how they act toward children in different learning activities. Using a qualitative research design, this study collected data comprising 15 interviews with preschool teachers. The result provide insights for how teachers limited knowledge in technology influence their leadership behavior toward children both in planned activities initiated by teachers and in unplanned activities initiated by children during free play. The core of how teachers’ knowledge in technology influences their leadership behavior in these two types of activities is their ability to deal with children’s why questions. The results also show that a compensatory approach becomes evident in teachers’ leadership behavior toward children in planned activities and that an avoidance approach is evident in unplanned activities. Our findings suggest that the development of a problem-solving approach in unplanned activities could enable teachers to create learning environments for children in which technology becomes something natural. Moreover, enhanced knowledge and understanding of technology will in turn make teachers better able to explain and clarify concepts and various technical phenomena.

Wireless control of wall switches: A module that controls your existing wall switch with an application2017Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this project a home-automation-solution is developed that wirelessly can control an existing wall switch with an application from a smart device. The purpose of the project is to develop a new solution that doesn’t require any electrical knowledge to mount the solution. Exiting solutions for controlling a switch require a module that is connected in series with the switch. The project will develop a module that can be mounted next to the selected wall switches to control them without electrical connection to the AC-voltage of the switch. Instead there is a servo that physically press the switch that is controlled. The servo motor is controlled wirelessly via Bluetooth Low Energy using an Android application, thus, a force is applied to the switch to turn on or off. A rechargeable lithium battery of 3.7 volts powers the whole module. Therefore, a "power-board" was developed that step up the voltage to 5 V. There are also components on the board that manage battery charging via microUSB. The Android application communicates via a Bluetooth Low Energy module that is mounted on a CPU board and has been developed and specifically manufactured to fit into the project. Both the power-board and processor-board is developed from own drawings and PCB layouts, and made with a manual etching method. The chassis has also been designed and manufactured with a 3D printer. The chassis holds all circuit boards, battery and a mount for the servo. The result is a working prototype that can be mounted on a switch and then operate the switch within the range of BLE. The prototype has a run time of each charging cycle of about 60 days under conditions that it is operated, on average, three times per day.

    Abstract [sv]

The survival story of a newsprint mill.: A single case study of an industrial transformation at Hylte Mill.2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The pulp and paper industry (PPI) and its products is one of Sweden's largest export goods, with newsprint as one of its major sources of income. The historically stable context had led to innovation inertia something that became clear when a sudden decrease for newsprint occurred. Hence, Stora Enso Hylte Mill, which is one of the largest producers of newsprint in Sweden realized that they needed to do something in order to secure their future. Therefore, the company started to investigate the possibility of moving into a new market, biocomposite.

Problem discussion: Ambidexterity is a requirement for a firm to be successful over time (Birkinshaw & Gibson, 2004). In uncertain environments organizational ambidexterity appears to be positively linked to increased firm innovation, better financial performance, andhigher survival rates (O’Reilly & Tushman 2013). Hylte Mill has historically had a stablemarket, thus exploitive activities have been their main concern. As the conditions change, explorative activities are needed which creates uncertainty for the firm. How does a firm in a historically stable context that has worked with exploitation for many years organize for exploration? What changes needs to be done in the organization?

Purpose: This master thesis will systematically go through and analyze how firms within previously stable market organize for ambidexterity and exploration. This is going to be done through three phases of an industrial transformation within the PPI. The purpose for this thesis is to increase the understanding of how organizations, operating in historically stable context, deals with radical innovation when the external environment demands it.

Methodology: This study has been an inductive single case study. The data has been collected through five semi-structured interviews with key individuals from period of industrial turbulence.

Findings: The barriers to innovation varies over time, when one barrier is solved another one occurs. By using ambidexterity, the firm can be better suited to handle these changes. The inertia in large established firms do not only depend on events occurring within the firm but can also be affected by external events.

Conclusion: Ambidexterity has a positive impact on innovation in uncertain environments that creates a sense of urgency. By initially applying structural ambidexterity to provide slack, and later expand the desired culture by contextual ambidexterity, large established firms can overcome innovation inertia. Slack showed positive impact on radical innovation on both mill- level and group-level. Also, external help proved to be crucial for the radical innovation capability.
