Open Innovation, Generativity and the Supplier as Peer: The Case of iPhone and Android2011In: International Journal of Innovation Management, ISSN 1363-9196, E-ISSN 1757-5877, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 205-230Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The diffusion of various forms of digital technologies has acted as a disrupting force in several industries, promoting open and distributed innovation processes. In this paper we argue that the supplier in open innovation networks tends to get a more active role as a creative peer producer, rather than merely a contractual deliverer. A comparative case study of the mobile phone platforms iPhone and Android is used to analyze this shift in innovative value creation. The notion of generative capacity is introduced to the research on open innovation, suggesting that it is generativity rather than openness that drives the platforms' aggregated wealth. The two cases from the mobile phone industry illustrate that innovation initiatives can successfully approach generativity in different ways and that both openness and control are important to facilitate supplier contributions. © 2011 Imperial College Press.

Designprinciper för att förebygga nätmobbning på sociala plattformar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The digital development in the society has resulted in new ways of working in order for companies to improve and streamline their processes. Earlier, organizations have implemented system solutions to increase the efficiency in their operations, but along with the digital development the phenomenon Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has evolved. RPA aims to streamline the operations of companies through processes automation. The problem area that has been identified through review of earlier literature is about what is specific for activities carried out at RPA implementations and what is characterizing these. The study, which has been carried out with a qualitative approach, therefore aims to create an understanding for implementations of RPA. More specifically, in order to be able to identify which activities that are being implemented and how these are being characterized. With characteristics of the activities it is meant what, how and why the activity is implemented. We have, after completed study, identified eight characteristics for activities when implementing RPA.

Designriktlinjer för hur eHälsotjänster kan designas för att stödja personcentrerad vård2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digitization has driven the development of new powerful information systems, with the potential to improve the efficiency in the healthcare system. The Internet has become a primary source for seeking healthcare related information and therefore the healthcare sector are facing a challenge with developing digital systems with person-centered focus. This study has aimed to answer the question “How can eHealth solutions be designed to maintain a person centeredness in the healthcare”. The study has used a design-oriented approach that resulted in four design guidelines that address patients needs for an overview, control and adaption of the content in their treatment. The design guidelines describe how eHealth can be designed for person-centered care and the guidelines represent the results that was identified in the study. The four guidelines have been applied in a prototype, and evaluated by different test persons. The study showed that the guidelines will contribute to increased knowledge about how eHealth can be designed for person-centered care and have given an answer for the research question.

Mot en kravinsamlingsmodell för utveckling av branschanpassade affärssystem2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Industry-oriented Enterprise Resource Planning (IERP) systems are designed for organizations belonging to a specific industry. The purpose of IERP is to achieve a higher degree of fit than that of a standardized Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and lower implementation cost than a customized ERP. However, the development of IERP has not been given the sufficient attention it requires. Through a literature review we introduce a model for requirements elicitation based on Requirements Engineering to support system developers in the collecting of requirements for IERP. In addition to the model, several related activities were identified. By interviewing system developers of IERP and taking note of their experiences, already identified activities were verified and new activities could be added to make requirements elicitation feasible. Lastly we describe the need for a model and its potential use.

Contextual Influences on User Satisfaction with Mobile Computing: Findings from Two Healthcare Organizations2006In: European Journal of Information Systems, ISSN 0960-085X, E-ISSN 1476-9344, Vol. 15, no 3, p. 261-268Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mobile information technologies (IT) are transforming individual work practices and organizations. These devices are extending not only the boundaries of the 'office' in space and time, but also the social context within which use occurs. In this paper, we investigate how extra-organizational influences can impact user satisfaction with mobile systems. The findings from our longitudinal study highlight the interrelatedness of different use contexts and their importance in perceptions of user satisfaction. The data indicate that varying social contexts of individual use (individual as employee, as professional, as private user, and as member of society) result in different social influences that affect the individual's perceptions of user satisfaction with the mobile technology. While existing theories explain user satisfaction with IT within the organizational context, our findings suggest that future studies of mobile IT in organizations should accommodate such extra-organizational contextual influences.

ICT Expansion and The Digital Divide in Democratic Freedom: An analysis of the impact of ICT expansion, Education and ICT filtering on democracy2010In: Telematics and informatics, ISSN 0736-5853, E-ISSN 1879-324X, Vol. 27, no 1, p. 21-31Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, several case studies have appeared on how mobile telephones, SMS and the Internet had an impact on political activities. It has been widely argued that information and communication technology (ICT) is influencing democracy all over the world. However, few studies provide any analysis of how ICT expansion correlates with measures of democracy. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the global expansion of ICT and the level of democracy within nations. We analyze archival data on 133 countries from 1995 to 2003, which was the period-of-time of explosive ICT expansion. Some important findings of our study are: (a) there is a growing digitaldivide in democratic freedoms among countries; (b) in spite of rapid ICT expansion in some countries, Internet filtering is having a significant impact on democratic freedoms. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Tillit inom virtuella Open Source projekt: En tillitsbaserad utvärderingsprocess2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

GDPR - Så påverkas detaljhandelns datahantering: en studie av hur GDPR påverkat detaljhandelns datahantering2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Webbutveckling: En studie om webbutvecklarnas syn på Designprocessen2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Stakeholders in Smart City Living Lab Processes2015In: AMCIS 2015 Proceedings, AIS Electronic Library (AISeL) , 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Due to the increasing urbanization around the world, cities are growing at fast pace and following that, many cities face problems that includes both hard and soft issues. This can for instance be transportation, energy suppliance, social inclusion and quality of life for its citizens. As a way to contribute to solving these problems the smart city concept has emerged. This concept is focusing on capitalizing on ICT landscape in a strategic way. To achieve a smart city it is important to start with understanding the people and their needs, which can be supported by a Living Lab. These Living Lab involve a multitude of stakeholders in their innovation processes and thus, it becomes important to understand the power dependencies, claims and roles these stakeholders have. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explores the stakeholders that are involved in smart city innovation processes supported by Living Lab

How are Public Sector Organizations Managing IS Outsourcing Risks?: An Analysis of Outsourcing guidelines from Three Jurisdictions2005In: Journal of Computer Information Systems, ISSN 0887-4417, Vol. 45, no 3, p. 73-87Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the past few years the public sector has witnessed some of the most spectacular information systems (IS) outsourcing failures. Publicofficials have come under fire for sloppy management of IS outsourcing engagements. Citizens are demanding legislation to control outsourcingpractice and more accountability from public sector managers. In an effort to better understand the context of IS outsourcing management in thepublic sector, we analyze the IS outsourcing guidelines of three public jurisdictions: Alberta, Canada; Queensland, Australia, and Texas, USA. These guidelines offer insights into how some public organizations approach managing the risks inherent in the practice of IS outsourcing. In this paper we review the research literature on IS outsourcing to develop a risk framework and use it to analyze the guidelines. We use a contentanalysis methodology to identify the IS outsourcing risk factors and management mitigation strategies addressed by the guidelines. Our findings indicate that IS outsourcing risk factors are widely acknowledged in the literature but are not fully addressed in the IS outsourcing guidelines thatpublic sector managers use for decision making and the management of IS outsourcing engagements. Our findings point to the need for betterguidelines and more support for public sector managers who must make costly IS outsourcing decisions.

Webbutveckling i praktiken: Förbättringsmöjligheter i utvecklingsprocessen2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Like a snowball: Adding layers of knowledge Enchanting student work with student input2017In: 2017 16th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET): ITHET 2017, June 10-12, 2017, Ohrid, Macedonia, IEEE conference proceedings, 2017, article id 8067794Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Internet of Things (IoT) seems to be a popular term nowadays, for business, society and teaching alike. Teaching students about such concepts and more importantly, making them aware of the many competency components (often called KSA-knowledge, skills, abilities) required in the development of IoT systems, services and products has been a major aim in the teaching design presented in this paper. The snowball metaphor symbolizes added layers of input, comments and suggestions delivered by Belgian, Swedish and Chinese students respectively, to peers with different backgrounds (study level, subject major, etc.). Open-platform exercises using Arduino kits are used as starting points and reports. Conceptualizations and suggestions are carried through the snowball ’chain’, which ends nearly two years later. Knowledge components are delivered e.g. through lectures. Among skills developed are practice in receiving input from and delivering output to groups different also in culture, knowledge, etc. Abilities include a demonstrated (and graded) proficiency in combining the acquired set of components, as demonstrated in workshops, discussions and reports, and in a proposed feedback loop to Sweden from China (not yet implemented). © 2017 IEEE.

Design of navigational support for task oriented reading in e-newspapers2006In: Proceedings of the 29th IRIS, 2006, p. 21-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to explore how the navigational support in an e-newspaper should be  designed to support the users task oriented reading behavior. An e-newspaper is a newspaper produced on e-paper, which combines the readability of paper, with the possibilities of digital media such as streaming updates, interactivity and multimedia. One advantage with the e-paper technology is its high contrast and readability; it uses no backlight and only consumes power when the pages are updated. This study is part of the European DigiNews project where three high fidelity e-newspaper prototypes has been produced in cooperation with readers and newspaper designers. These prototypes have been tested on 36 readers to examine how to design navigational support to aid task oriented reading. Six guidelines for have been generated from the results of the study which covers information structure, hyperlinks, feedback and visual cues.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we have addressed the research question: In what way does a Living Lab approach influence the innovation process from a small enterprise perspective? Within Halmstad Living Lab we have performed approximately 50 Living Lab activities involving user and enterprise representatives within the health technology sector. We have discussed our experiences according to literature on innovation and competence in relation to a Living Lab approach and have identified four challenges that need to be addressed. Examples of these challenges are; In what way can Living Lab activities contribute to expand the competencies within the small enterprises and how to create openness between enterprises and other stakeholders regarding legal documents such as IPR and patent?

    Abstract [en]

In today's society, large amounts of data are generated that both private and public organization can analyze and benefit from. Business Intelligence is a concept that transforms data into information that becomes knowledgeable. Business Intelligence and its analysis tools can help businesses interpret complex, yet competitive, information. Previous research has focused primarily on how analysis tools have contributed with the benefit of private businesses. This study has therefore focused on the use of data analyzes in public activities, more specifically the Swedish Police Office. Previous research in the field of police activities has mainly investigated the use of analytical tools in the US and Canada.

The study aims at supplementing existing literature with descriptions of how analytical tools contribute with the Swedish police and to external actors. The study has had a qualitative research effort where the use of data analyzes within the Swedish police has been studied with

the help of interviews. Using literature on the use of data analyzes, the benefits received by the police have been identified and described as well as how these benefits contributed to the benefit of external actors. The conclusion presents the benefits received by the police.

Beställarkompetens vid upphandling och utveckling av IT: Om kompetensframväxt i skuggan av kunskapsfragmentering2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Ever since IT started to become important and strategic assets in organizational practices, systems acquisitions have been a challenging and complex endeavor. There are seemingly never ending reports of unsuccessful IT acquisitions and lack of systems acquisition competence (beställarkompetens in Swedish). The aim of this thesis is to shed deeper light on what systems acquisition competence is about, and to present a framework for understanding its nature and premises in IT-projects. This thesis is grounded on three concurring problem areas. First, IT projects are notoriously prone to problems. This despite of decades of IS and ISD research on methods, project management, etc. While there is extensive knowledge about the development process, methods, techniques, tools, developers' skills and competence requirements, less is known about systems acquisition competence. Second, and following from the first, there are few established or generally agreed upon definitions, or substantial theories, of this distinct competency. Third, there is still a limited understanding of systems development from a learning or knowledge work point of view. This thesis deals with the concept of “beställarkompetens”, and theorizes the underlying empirical phenomena; knowledge work in IT project practices. Drawing on exploratory empirical work in an interpretive multiple case study, this thesis investigates 10 governmental IT projects, their outcomes and stakeholders perceptions of acquisition competency. This investigation was supported by theories of individual and organizational perspectives on learning, as well as knowledge theory, competence theory and systems development theory. This thesis presents a theoretical perspective suggesting that acquisition competence can be understood as an emergent quality of the system development process, that is, as dynamic rather than static knowledge. Further, it suggests that key stakeholders interaction, collaboration, situated learning and competence renewal are prime mechanisms to ensure sufficient systems acquisition competence and project performance. One important practical implication from this research is the identification of fragmentation of knowledge as a main threat to successful outcome of IT projects. The contribution is a theoretical framework useful for understanding “beställarkompetens” in systems development contexts, and a tentative theory of emergent competence.

    Abstract [en]

Information Systems (IS) education deals with increasingly abstract and complex design challenges. Through digital innovation, the field continuously expands to new application areas. To develop design competence, students need to build up a repertoire of experiences enabling in-depth understanding of use context and design settings. Most students are young and have limited workplace experience.  These circumstances are challenging to IS education and teaching. In this paper we share experiences from teaching and designing IS education to be adapted to this situation. We propose three teaching strategies for bringing authenticity and contextual relevance to IS education; (1) teaching by doing together, (2) enable authentic experiences, and (3) critical formative dialogue.

Emulation of IP Core Network for Testing of the Serving GRPS Support Node (SGSN) Routing Application2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate a method and tool for emulation of the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) core network needed as an environment to test the routing functionality. GPRS is the most widely adopted mobile packet data delivery technology in the world. It utilizes an Intranet Protocol (IP)-based core network and involves significant changes to the way the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) air interface is structured. It also forms the basis of the future structure of mobile network transmission and switching.

The Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) is the most fundamental node in GPRS. Ericsson produces and manages an increasing number of SGSN nodes in the world. One of main functionalities of SGSN node is to forward IP packets according to the destination address in the IP header on IP core network.

In each new release of SGSN, or when implementation or upgrades have been done on routing application on SGSN, design and test engineers at Ericsson need to emulate the IP core network. This must be done with use of many routers to generate huge amounts of data that can simulate the real world IP core network.

The major goal of this thesis was to analyze and verifying the use of a suitable and economical solution to emulating IP Core Network of the GPRS system for testing of different functionality of the routing application running in SGSN , instead of building up a physical Core Network with different infrastructure and many routers.

The method chosen for emulating the IP core network with many routers, and investigated in the thesis, is based on a Cisco simulator called “Dynamips”, which runs many actual Cisco Internetwork Operating Systems (IOS) with many different models of Cisco products in a virtual environment on Windows or Linux platforms. With this simulator, engineers at Ericsson will be able to use this simulator to emulate IP core network easily and efficiently to accomplish system test cases.

A conclusion of this work is that Dynamips could be used to emulate many complicated IP core network scenarios, with many routers to generate huge amounts of data to simulate the real world IP core network. The emulated system fulfils its purpose for testing of the routing application of SGSN regarding different functionality and characteristics. This is done to ensure and verify that SGSN routing application meets its functional and technical requirements, and also helps to find undiscovered errors as well as helps to ensure that the individual components of routing application on SGSN are working correctly.

Design av mobilitetstjänster för att stödja hållbara val: Hur kan mobilitetstjänster designas för att stödja användare till hållbara val?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

ERP systems may have a significant impact on how organizations are managed and organized and they are the core of information management in organizations. Implementing an ERP system in an organization is a comprehensive process. Previous research on ERP has mainly focused on how organizations should proceed to accomplish a successful implementation. Despite this, the failure rate of ERP implementations is high and several scientific articles are pointing out a knowledge gap in what is known as post implementation. Post implementation is what happens after an ERP systemsimplementation. The post implementation stage consists of three phases. This study focuses on the first phase, stabilization, and the work done to achieve a stable position. A stable position can be defined as that the processes in the organization works effectively and smoothly and that the users are confident in using the system.

Based on the literature study, three themes that organizations work with during stabilization were identified. These were evaluation, user training and business processes reengineering. On the basis of these themes, interviews were conducted to answer the question, "How do organizations work with stabilization during the post implementation stage?”. Based on result, analysis and discussion, four areas were identified which organizations work with during the stabilization phase to achieve a stable: development of priority lists, evaluation of user expertise, user training and evaluation of business processes.

Hållbarhet och offentliga IT-upphandlingar: En studie om IT-konsulters arbete med offentliga upphandlingar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Screening web breaks in a pressroom by soft computing2011In: Applied Soft Computing, ISSN 1568-4946, E-ISSN 1872-9681, Vol. 11, no 3, p. 3114-3124Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this work is to identify the main parameters of the printing press, the printing process, and the paper affecting the occurrence of web breaks in a pressroom. Two approaches are explored. The first one treats the problem as a task of data classification into "break" and "non-break" classes. The procedures of classifier design and selection of relevant input variables are integrated into one process based on genetic search. The second approach, targeted for data visualization and also based on genetic search, combines procedures of input variable selection and data mapping into a two-dimensional space. The genetic search-based analysis has shown that the web tension parameters are amongst the most important ones. It was also found that the group of paper related parameters recorded online contain more information for predicting the occurrence of web breaks than the group of traditional parameters recorded off-line at a paper lab. Using the selected set of parameters, on average, 93.7% of the test set data were classified correctly. The average classification accuracy of web break cases was equal to 76.7%. (C) 2010 Elsevier B. RealLife - en tekniköversikt2008Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

A comparative analysis of Cisco Performance Routing (PfR) and other performance enhancing techniques - Cisco QoS and Path Control2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Eleven years ago Cisco introduced three types of applications on the same converged network and named it AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data). In spite of the initial interest and hype surrounding AVVID, the feature was and still is unable to confront problems such as: data priority, load balancing and network congestion. The work in this report addressed these issues within the network. Different Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) methods: routing protocols, Cisco IOS QoS (including LLQ, LFI and Header Compression), Path Control and Cisco Performance Routing (PfR) were all tested to see which feature would work best at enhancing network performance.

A practical network was created in which these features were carefully implemented one after another. In every step, the results were observed and recorded and if necessary repeated in order to check their validity. The results for RTT (Round Trip Time) and MOS (Mean Opinion Score) showed that in comparison to Path Control and Cisco IOS QoS (Quality of Service) mechanisms, Cisco PfR was able to generate routes on the fly during times of network congestion. This cannot be achieved with the use of Cisco QoS and Path Control which makes Cisco Performance Routing a far more superior feature. Although the focus of the work was VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) data, it is possible to construct a network with any application as Cisco PfR is able to reroute data. Cisco PfR is an easily accessible IOS feature which, once implemented, requires very little updating and maintenance.

Digital Innovation in the Value Networks of Newspapers2009Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

After decades of digital developments, we are now entering a truly digital era. Digital information and communication technology has become a naturally embedded part ofthe designed environment we live in. Most parts of life are today pervaded by digital products and services. Evidence of such immersion can be noted in, for instance, media consumption. This development is gradually shaping and cultivating a media environment that is ubiquitous. Such ubiquity is manifested in media’s constant presence and thechanges in media consumption in the purview of digital innovation. Indeed, digital innovation is not only a shift in technology. It alters existing value networks and calls forrethinking existing value perceptions. While this disruptive change driven by digitizationcan be found in many industries, this thesis focuses on its impact on value networks in thenewspaper industry. The digitization of newspapers started with the introduction of the internet in the 90´sand soon emerged into new media innovations. While these new media innovations have not replaced existing media, they have been disruptive to newspaper value networks. Recently, the emergence of yet another digital innovation is specifically interesting whenstudying changes to value networks of the newspaper industry: the e-paper. This innovation (a screen technology very close to print on paper) exhibits inherent valuesthat make future replacement of print on paper a possibility. It is therefore regarded as avery promising technology in the newspaper industry. This thesis can be positioned at the intersection of the friction between forces to embarkon a new media trajectory and forces to hang on to the established structures andcontrol. The research question addressed in this thesis is: How are value networks of newspapers influenced by digital innovation? Addressing the research question, a multimethod approach was adopted to gain a broad understanding of how digital innovationinfluences value networks of newspapers. Drawing on digital innovation literature, the thesis presents a theoretical perspective with which to understand how digital innovation influences value networks. This perspective is instantiated as a model of value network configuration. The model emphasizes the multi-layered, dynamic, dialectic, and diametrical character of value networks in digital innovation. The model is offered as abasis and analytical tool to further explore value networks in digital innovation. This tool is useful for newspaper stakeholders when entering the digital era.

Mobile service value: presenting the newspaper publisher view on how to attract users and advertisers2006In: Proceedings of the 29th IRIS, 2006, p. 19-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents results from a study of news publisher’s perceptions of reader and advertiser value of mobile services. Literature on mobile service features and benefits has been used to discuss these values. The study was conducted in 10 European newspaper publishing organizations. The data on the value perceptions was analyzed iteratively to discover patterns of attributes, and resulted in a set of values for readers respectively advertisers. These finding suggest a re-shaped service model for newspaper publishers. The perception of reader values are availability, experience, relevance, sociability, and credibility, and of advertiser value mass coverage, targeting, tracking and mediating. This set of value attributes can be of guidance for content-providing organizations attempting to practice a value-centered approach to mobile service design.

    Abstract [en]

As most of today’s media houses publish in multiple channels, theyalso exist in a multitude of infrastructures. Given the ongoing diffusion ofpersonal computers, handheld devices, and mobile telephones as well as theadvent of new technologies such as the e-paper, a new type of ubiquitousinformation environment is emerging. In this paper we give an update on thedevelopment of e-paper technology and provide a literature review ofinfrastructure issues in ubiquitous information environments. From empiricalresults from 19 interviews and 9 workshops with newspaper managers anddesigners in Sweden, Belgium, France and the Netherlands, we address thefollowing research question: What infrastructure considerations arise with theintroduction of a new channel in a ubiquitous media environment?

    Abstract [en]

Mobile advertising opportunities have attracted interest from industry and academics as a response to the trend of diffusion of new mobile technology. One industry particularly interested in new advertising opportunities is the newspaper industry. Many media houses envision a future multi-channel media environment supporting device independent, anytime, anywhere publishing, i.e. a Ubiquitous Media Environment (UME). In this paper we explore how ubiquitous advertising challenges the role of media houses. Ubiquitous advertising refers to advertising in a UME, anytime, anywhere and in any device. Based on results from interviews and workshops with advertisers and publishers we discuss how media houses traditional role is challenged. We contribute with an understanding of how media houses can develop their role to succeed with ubiquitous advertising and to m-advertising literature with insights into the dynamics of balancing consumer and advertiser value of ubiquitous advertising.

Designing and evaluating the calm electronic newspaper2006In: Proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Information Systems, ECIS 2006 / [ed] Jan Ljungberg, Göteborg: IT-universitetet, Göteborgs universitet , 2006, p. 12-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports from an ongoing action research study concerning the design of the future e-newspaper, i.e. a newspaper on e-paper technology. The e-paper innovation is of great importance to the newspaper publishers since it has the potential of eventually replacing the printed newspaper due to its readability and high contrast. This study addresses the challenge of how to design calm user experience of the e-newspaper. The action research approach followed the canonical action research method, in collaboration with publisher, reader and advertiser clients. The activities include a range of data collection techniques such as project meetings, workshops, interviews and prototype testing. In the diagnosing phase we identified the core challenges for designing the e-newspaper which directed us to the literature of calm technology. Three design principles for calm user experience were formulated in the action planning phase, followed by designing three e-newspaper prototypes, which embeds the design principles, in the action taking phase. The prototypes were evaluated with 36 readers in the evaluating phase and the outcome of these evaluations was later assessed in collaboration with newspaper designers for specifying learning. The results indicate that the design principles support calm user experience.

Mobile Service Adoption: the Swedish Case Between 2006 and 20082008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the development of mobile service adoption between 2006 and 2008 using the Global Acceptance of Technology model (GAT) for categorization. Two online surveys were conducted, one in 2006 and one in 2008. The online questionnaires were presented at the web sites at two Swedish newspapers with comparable circulation. The sample from 2006 includes 131 respondents and the 2008 sample include 152 respondents. The samples have comparable distribution of gender, age and mobile phone penetration. The findings show a positive development in mobile service adoption in Sweden from 2006 to 2008, e.g. a large portion of the users have upgraded their mobile phones to 3G, the cost is nolonger an important barrier for adoption and users seem to be more acquainted with using mobile services and therefore do not regard mobile services to be as complicated. However, the value of mobile services was generally rated lower in 2008 than in 2006, suggesting a new challenge for the mobile service producers.

    Abstract [en]

The high penetration of mobile devices implies that we are closing up to the vision of ubiquitous media environments. This paper reports from a broad survey about barriers, use patterns, and motivations for using mobile media services. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of mobile service adoption process by studying users in different phases of the adoption process. The findings imply that mobile services are still not adopted and ubiquitously ingrained in use patterns. There is still a long way to go.

Digital platforms exist in an ecosystem of complex networks of actorsand resources. In this paper we shed light on the challenges for incumbent content providers to adapt to and realize business opportunities in digital platforms. Abstract [en]

Digital innovation is rapidly reshaping society, affecting fundamental aspects of our everyday activities and lives. This development is accompanied with benefits as well as social dilemmas. In this paper we approach this class of challenges in IS digital innovation research. We investigate how social challenges are attended in research agendas, and reflect upon social challenges emerging from a digital service innovation project. Based on the empirical case, we present a scenario that illustrates how social challenges can unfold in digital service innovation. The case exemplifies three conflicts of interest that are used to discuss implications for the research agendas for digital innovation. We propose that explicit attention is paid to social and ethical challenges, taking a large scale and interdisciplinary approach on social and ethical challenges in digital ecosystems.
