Lost In Translation: Betydelsen av Kultur utifrån Nationalitet, Lingvistik samt Organisation i Multinationella Team2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

As a result of globalization, multinational teams are being more frequently used in today´s businesses. This specific type of team can be described as heterogeneous when it comes to nationality and linguistics. The aim of this study was to explore the concept of multinational teams. This was made using culture as a main concept, and nationality, linguistics, and organizational culture in order to describe it. We intended to say something about how this type of team´s efficiency; when it comes to satisfaction and performance; was affected by national and linguistic heterogeneity within the team. While analyzing differences between the teams’ efficiency when it comes to satisfaction and performance, we also intended to say something about how organizational culture can affect this.

This study was made by using a qualitative approach, with focus on a deductive way of doing it. Four different case studies were conducted in order to support this study. A total of seven different respondents where used in this study and their narratives are together with the theoretical framework the basis for this study´s analysis and conclusions.

This study reveals that perceived efficiency when it comes to satisfaction and performance can be affected by national and linguistic heterogeneity among team members in multinational teams. It also suggests that organizational culture can be used in order to overshadow these differences among team members, and that this in turn affects the perceived efficiency. A straightforward answer regarding nationality, linguistic, and organizational culture´s influence on multinational team´s efficiency, was never given from the case studies. Instead, this seemed to vary from case to case. Two extremes were yet to be found. When nationality and linguistic heterogeneity were easy to observe, low efficiency was perceived in the multinational team. In contrast, when organizational culture was easy to observe, high efficiency was perceived within the multinational team. This suggests that organizational culture can override national and linguistic heterogeneity when it comes to creating high performance and satisfaction among members of multinational teams.

Hur mikrofinanser genererar empowerment hos kvinnor i utvecklingsländer: Pengar med ett syfte2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Social work as an traditional aid is an area that provides welfare services financed from public funds, which is one of the methods of microloans. Microloans have since the mid-1970s has become an increasingly common tool in the fight against poverty. Instead of purely assistance is now offered microloans from more banks and other institutions, as well as NGOs (non governmental organization). This paper aims to study whether and how microcredit can contribute to the empowerment of women in Bangladesh and India. This study is based on a qualitative text analysis, and has hence been based on a number of reports and articles. The paper examines, from a radical feminist perspective how microcredit can fight and eliminate poverty, and how empowerment can help women in developing countries to become independent and liberated. The introduction of micro-loan is considered to have positive effects on women's empowerment in the short term. But it is, however, the longer term effects that are considered to have the greatest positive impact on society's unequal structures. The study shows, however, that in order to achieve the desired result, education is of utmost importance. Future research should focus on how to break down the patriarchal structures of society where this is considered a prerequisite for obtaining a long-lasting and stable change in the status of women in the countries concerned.

Arabiska våren: Framställningen av revolutionen i Mellanöstern/Nordafrika i mainstreammedia2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The COO Effect in the International Brand Positioning: A Qualitative Study of Chinese Companies2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 poäng / 60 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Chinese companies have been an important issue in the world economy development, since China belongs to the group of emerging countries that had been gaining prominence in the last years. To gain market, ranges of companies are going abroad, aiming to develop their brands internationally. Brand positioning plays an important role when the goal of the company is to gain competitive advantage and to be positioned in the consumer’s mind. Furthermore, when Chinese companies decide to internationalize, they have to deal with the COO (country-of-origin) effect, which might influence the consumer’s perception when purchasing a product. The aim of this study is to examine how the effects of COO influence brand positioning of Chinese firms when going international, and how they deal with these COO effects. In this context, a theoretical framework presenting the brand positioning drivers with the combination of the COO effect is developed. A qualitative case study that incorporates four interviews in two different Chinese companies with subsidiaries in Brazil, called JAC Motors and ZTE, are settled. The findings from the case study are compared and contrasted with the theoretical framework, developing a cross-case analysis, identifying and complementing the elements of the theoretical framework. In this regard, it was identified that Chinese companies position their brands with a cost-benefit approach, due to the COO effect caused by different general attributes from China. The brand positioning drivers, in a certain way, are defined taking in consideration the COO effect, although the drivers were not totally affected by the COO. In order to deal with the COO effect, most drivers oppose a negative effect of the COO when it is caused by the perception of lack ofquality from Chinese products; or the COO effect is highlighted in the strategy, when it is caused by the perception of low price. These findings are eventually depicted by a theoretically anchored and empirically guided model, which allows the authors to describe the international brand positioning of Chinese brands and how they deal with the COO effect in its international brand positioning.

“Civilizations” and Political-Institutional Paths: A Sequence Analysis of the MaxRange2 Data Set, 1789 – 20132014Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In what sequences have nations changed institutionally in history and does that order matter for later democratization? If so, are there historical-institutional pathways of “civilizations”? These previously neglected research problems are addressed in this paper on the basis of a new, unique, and enormous data set tracking all political institutions and systems in the world monthly since 1789. The aim is both empirical and theoretical: to take steps toward an understanding of the sequential aspects of political-institutional evolution. Results visualize sequences at regime level that show few signs of path dependency. They also show that democracy may emerge in all types of regimes, though at varying paces. Separating religious-majority nations, Muslim systems are less affected by democracy diffusion than other religious-majority nations. Muslim political systems also exhibit larger regime type unpredictability. Taken together with estimates of GDP per capita, majority religions explain a minor share of discrepancies between regime types: wealth of nations is more important than majority religion on a general, regime type diversity level. However, specifications of institutional details will have to be made in future research in this new area of historical political-institutional study.

    Abstract [en]

This is an International Relations thesis that will address the current situation in Mali regarding the conditions attached to aid and debt-relief by the World Bank. These conditions are of a neoliberal nature introducing privatization and liberalization of prices in the cotton sector in Mali. The goals with the use of these conditions are to promote economic development and growth in order to reduce poverty in Mali.

However, these conditions have been argued by some authors and reports to inefficient in achieving poverty reduction. It have been questioned whether the neoliberal ideology used by the World Bank is the most suitable for the current development situation in Mali.

Putting out fire with gasoline – are lessons learned from the past or will hardline hawks and liberal interventionists continue to lead the future in US Foreign Policy?2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

As the world’s far most important superpower, the U.S. has the leading role in international relations in a foreseeable future, thus exposed to various ‘new’ and complex challenges. But although numerous research point out that the “war on terror” has been counterproductive, namely made the US less safe, created more anti-American sentiment and instability, many influential think-tanks and significant security advisers are now criticizing the present administration for being weak. By using similar arguments as in various historical examples, they urge the administration to take “new threats more seriously” and implement a more engaged foreign policy, including firmer military strategies. Simultaneously, an increasing number of policymakers and high ranked officers are questioning previous strategies and urged for a new policy. By interviewing influential policy makers and following the debate in Washington closely, this paper examine the ongoing political discussion on security matters and explore the dominating discourses regarding future strategies for U.S. to counter new threats. Furthermore it asks what possible outcomes the dominating perspectives might mean for the international security environment in the future. Is there a chance for a future build on diplomacy and off-shore balancing – or will future U.S. strategies (continue to) putt out fires with gasoline?

Is there a risk that presented strategies will (continue to) put out fires with gasoline – or will new tactics build a future for peace and stability?
