    Abstract [en]

This dissertation explore young peoples will to become artists. A group of art students have been interviewed and severel questions are raised. How do the students perceive their artistry and their role as artists? In what way is artistic creation meaningful to them? What does the relationship between the individual project of becoming an artist and their societal participation look like? As artists they examine different phenomena subjectively and they sometimes exceed personal and social boundaries. What may this look like and how may it be understod? In order to understand and interpret the art students’ work and reasons to become artists sociologically, I use Anthony Giddens analysis of the late-modern society and and the late-modern identity. Giddens creates a sociological understanding of the individual in society rather than an understanding of specific social groups. An understanding, which is well suited to highlight, the frequently individual life projects, created by the art students. However, Giddens theory is broad and opens for critisism. The art students, give their views of society and of themselves, which are not always in agreement with Giddens’ theory and therefore create different thoughts about the late-modern identity. When I develop Giddens’ theory, it is through an interaction between Giddens, the artstudents and other theories, between which I create a dialogue about identity, the exceedeing of social boundaries and the role of subjecticity in the late modern society.

Gemenskapens socialpsykologi2011 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Hermeneutic Reflexivity, Art and Community2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to explore how the strive to form a personal artistry meets the need to be connected to colleges among a group of young art students attending an art school in Sweden and how these strives affect the community they create together. I want to discuss how reflexivity as a meeting between a subjective view on life and collective agreements can be understood among these young artists and how their experiences can influence the understanding of reflexivity in a wider extent. The young artists reflexivity can bee seen as taking place at different levels. To be able to understand these different forms of reflexivity and how they are related to each other I will develop an understanding of the concept reflexivity with help from Anthony Giddens, Scott Lash and Emmanuel Levinas.

How is the artist role affected when artists are participating in projects in work life?2016In: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 11, article id 30549Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, during the last decade, the artist has come to function as a creative resource in workplaces. There are two organisations, Skiss (Contemporary Artist in the Contemporary Society) and Airis (Artist in Residence), that organise projects for artists and coworkers. These projects are intended to have a positive effect on the well-being of organisations and their employees through artistic means, and the artist often focuses on the social interaction between the employees in their work. The artists’ work involves frequent interaction with coworkers. The aim of this article was to describe how visual artists’ roles as artists are affected by their engagement in artistic and social projects at workplaces in Sweden. The focus in the article is on the social interaction between artists and employees. The study is a qualitative narrative interview study with fine artists participating in different projects in work life. Since the artist’s intervention is usually directed towards social relations in the workplaces, a social perspective on well-being is from a micro-sociological point of view. The categories in the interviews were how the artists worked with the projects, how the social interaction between artists and coworkers worked out, and how the artists evaluated the projects in relation to their ambitions. The results show that, many times, the artistic projects promote well-being in organisations and to some extent benefit the artist, but that the ability of the artists to actually function as artists can be problematic. ©2016 H. Konstnären som inspiratör på arbetsplatsen2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Relational Art and Managing Emotions2014In: XVII ISA World Congress of Sociology: Book of abstract: Facing an Unequal World: Challenges for Global Sociology, 2014, p. 931-931Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden today, it is customary for visual artists to perform artistic and creative projects in work places. The artists are supposed to bring thoughts, ideas and activities that are not otherwise common in to the work place to strengthen social relations, to influence employees to reflect on their work situation and to promote creativity and well-being. The projects can also at best help artists to establish themselves in new fields in the labor market and to further their development as artists and their artistic methods.

The aim of the study is to examine visual artists’ new role as creative inspirers at workplaces in perspective of a changed view of the artist as a participant in and a resource for society, rather than art as an internal artistic affair that takes shape based on primarily subjective artistic motivations. This changed view exists in the cultural policy as well as in the art field itself. Focus is on how artistic creativity and activity empirically and theoretically can be described and understood.

The results show that the projects can benefit organizations and to some extent benefit the artist, but that the possibilities to actually perform as artists also can be limited.

Relationell socialpsykologi: klassiska och samtida teorier2013Conference proceedings (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Using Sensitive Visual Data: Interdisciplinary Approaches for Developing New Ethically Informed Methodologies2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In today's digitized society, some phenomena need to be addressed in research in order to build knowledge and understanding that can be used to maintain integrity and safety for individuals. In this paper, we address the problematic issue of smartphone bystanders in accident scenes. Photographs and videos of victims in difficult circumstances, often with no possibilities to claim their own integrity, are widely posted on social media - and the phenomenon seems to be spread in many cultures. Photographs and videos become communicative "data" in content analysis of social media platforms, but what do researchers need to be aware of in analyzing and reporting research findings in this particular area? We believe that interdisciplinary approaches are useful when it comes to exploring and developing ethically informed methodologies in order to safeguard researchers working with sensitive data drawn from social media and the Internet in areas of social complexity.
