Framing King: En kvalitativ studie om hur Martin Luther King gestaltas i medier2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 300 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This piece of research examines how the speech Beyond Vietnam by Martin Luther King Jr. is framed by four newspapers in the United States. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the existing body of research in framing as a field of study in general. More specifically, the aim is to expand the existing literature on media research regarding Martin Luther King Jr. while he was alive. Entman’s definition of framing is operationalized through the use of a deductive method. The results show that King is framed in a negative manner. In terms of framing, Conflict Frame is the most common frame used by newspapers in response to King’s speech. This is most likely due to the cold war politics prevalent during this era.

Jaktens berättigande i 1930-talets Sverige: En undersökning om föreställningarna och förhållandena mellan jakten och människan i samband med 1938 års jaktlagstiftning.2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Svensk cykelindustri 1867-1965: En historisk longitudinell studie2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Världsutställningen i Paris 1867 fick stor betydelse förvelocipedens spridning.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine the similarities and differences between the Swedish public research  (SOU) called Friluftsbad, simhallar, bastur: simundervisning och simlärarutbildning and the discussion in several board protocols and their effects on the local public bath in Halmstad. Halmstad is a small city located in south west Sweden, research on a national level has been done, but not on local. An additional aim is to investigate the recreation- and health discourse on a local level. The tool for the analys is the theory named Agent-and structure method.

The conclusion of this study is that the public bath in Halmstad has many similarities with former research by SOU. For example there is a connection between the choice of location, and the length of the building. However, this study also discover some new aspects, for example facts about people with disabilities.

The White Ribbon - Temperate Women on Public Scenes2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

I would like to present my dissertation on the female temperance organization the White Ribbon, founded in Sweden in the year 1900. The organisation was part of the international World’s Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. The aim of the White Ribbon was to create a temperate society and the activity was nationwide. The organisation ran temperance restaurants, and established different kinds of philanthropic institutions such as orphanages, rest homes, and rescue homes for prostitutes and female alcoholics. They also launched vocational training and educational courses for women. They had their own publishing firm, which issued a journal and pamphlets.

I have studied the White Ribbon as a social movement, and therefore I use a social movement theory to analyse their work. This theoretical approach has made it possible to analyse the underlying ideology as well as the organisation’s practical activities. Thus, I have been able to focus on the social and political activities in relation to the process of democratisation in Sweden. The study shows that the White Ribbon’s aim was not only to create a temperate society. In fact, it may be argued that the primary ambition was an equal and democratic society, which was founded on women’s political rights and their participation.

Generally speaking, female Christian associations and their charitable activities have been considered conservative, promoting a traditional female ideal that consigned women to the private sphere. My study shows differently. The White Ribboners opposed the prevailing views on women, arguing that they had both a right and an obligation to act in society and politics. Their philanthropic institutes did not originate from a female Christian mission but from socio-political ambitions. Moreover, they should also be seen as businesses in a branch of new and necessary social services; the White Ribboners were in fact entrepreneurs and business owners. The organisation’s members were presented as role models for how women could and should participate in society. The journal paid attention and tributes to businesswomen, female politicians and writers, etcetera. This way the White Ribbon praised and promoted icons that contradicted the prevailing view on women. In short, they introduced a new and different female ideal.

As part of the temperance movement, the White Ribboners did not only have access to the political field, but were also recognised as political agents. Like their male equivalents, the White Ribboners were political lobbyists active in political parties. Quite a few of them were members of the Liberal party and had positions in local councils. Like many other studies, mine shows that women were active agents on the public and political scene. Despite this, female politicians are rarely mentioned in the history of politics; newly published school textbooks still reproduce the view that men, and not women, were agents in society, claiming that the public and political scenes were male domains. Unfortunately, after decades of gender research the history shelves in Swedish bookstores are still dominated by the history of men. This raises several questions worth discussing.

Hur såg kvinnors deltagande ut i de olympiska spelen i Amsterdam 1928?: En kvalitativ studie om hur olympiska idrottare framställs i dagstidningar år 19282018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this paper the use of history in the Swedish immigration debate during the refuge crisis of 2015 is examined with the purpose of determining how the articles express historical consciousness. Furthermore, the potential to use these articles in a school context to develop students’ historical consciousness is discussed. The study was conducted through qualitative text analysis of debate articles from the fall of 2015 in three different Swedish newspapers, using theory of narrative competence as a determiner of the development of historical consciousness. Narrative competence was measured using a model of progression containing four different levels of narrative: Traditional, exemplary, critical and genetic. The results showed that in relation to the present, all four types of narratives could be observed. However, the past was predominantly used exemplary, to guide action in the contemporary situation. In the context of upper secondary school history education, suggestions of how to use the empirical material included problematisation and deconstruction of these historical examples to determine their ability to enhance understanding of present and past situations. Furthermore, articles referring to the same historical phenomenon with different levels of development in historical consciousness could be used to allow the students to observe the contrasts to develop their own historical consciousness.

Alkoholens inverkan på misshandelsbrottensgärningspersoner och offer: - kring motbokens införande2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Uppsatsen behandlar en studie av datorspelet Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. Slutligen diskuteras även lärandepotentialen i spelet.

    Abstract [en]

A historical overview of European science and technology suggests the existence of two parallel trends: those of nationalization and de-nationalization. Since the Enlightenment, besides the modernist universalist perspective on science we find nationalist pressures pushing the idea of socially constructed technology, thus generating scientific results determined by national (cultural) factors. Nationalization and de-nationalization thrive together in certain circumstances--for instance, in disciplines such as geology, meteorology, botany or even physics and chemistry. The entry into the scene of commercial interests gives rise to national interests, in turn hampering efficiency and progress from the scientific perspective. Through national research policies these differential development patterns have tended to create an often unnecessary conflict between basic and applied research. The EU RTD framework has still to resolve these contradictions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this paper I have interviewed one Swedish citizen that has immigrated to Sweden as an adult from Istanbul, Turkey. I have studied the different causes that lead to his decision to leave his country of origin and settle down in Sweden. For this I have used the theoretical factors push and pull. I have also studied processes of identity, inclusion and exclusion in Sweden. My results show that the coup d´état initiated by the military leader Kenan Evren 1980 had a huge impact on my informant’s decision to flee to Sweden. My informant was imprisoned during a period of five years. During this time he was beaten and tortured. The main factor for choosing Sweden as a new country was his perception that Sweden, amongst all western countries, was the most democratic of them all.

In general terms, my informant describes the Swedish society and its people as including and the fact that he feels that he is Swedish is an including factor in itself. My informant praises the Swedish system and the Swedish born citizens. When analysed though, the researcher find a story that tells of a partly segregated society. This is an excluding factor and can be examined from many different theoretical view points. The Swedish mentality (Åke Daun 1998), in which Swedish born may have a tendency to seek the familiar, can be one factor. This can be understood together with the concept of orientalism. My informant's story also describes a diaspora of immigrants, which is to be understood in terms that immigrants, regardless origin, help each other. This is both an including and excluding factor. Including in terms of helping the immigrant to obtain his first job, excluding in terms of putting immigrants in other work sectors than Swedish born citizens.

    Abstract [en]

This essay will address whether the school has gone from being a collectivist-oriented to anindividualist-oriented school. By studying the curricula LGY70, LPF94 and LGY11 for uppersecondary school and studying how the concept group expresses itself in the different curricula. The study is based on a qualitative concept analysis model by Walker and Avant's seven differentsteps to analyze concept. The term group will be explained and discussed in the paper to create anunderstanding of what a group is and its different definitions. After this, group theories will beaddressed in relation to the concept group, then this will be applied in relation to the curricula. In each curriculum I will give an overall history when the curricula came to be applied in society. This is done to better understand the time and spirit of the time. In each curriculum I will give anoverall history when the curricula came to be applied in society. This is done to better understandthe time and spirit of the time. What I have come up with is that the school has gone from being collectivist to individualistic. This is because the curricula change and are revised to create the conditions for an increasinglychanging society. This is a must for the school to prepare the students for an ever-changing society.Groups are not as important, but it is the individual and its growth and learning that have come intofocus. For each curriculum, more and more valid groups and group identities have been revisedaway.

Deo-Victorian Society in the Neo-Victorian Novel: A Study of Sensory Perceptions in Michel Faber´s The Crimson Petal and the White2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the contemporary reader´s fascination with the Victorian period focusing on Michel Faber´s neo-Victorian novel The Crimson Petal and the White (2002). By comparing and contrasting various literary elements that link the Victorian novel to contemporary neo-Victorian fiction it simultaneously shows the similarities and differences between the nineteenth-century Victorian sensorium and that of the present day. It puts particular emphasis on the sensory perceptions of vision and smell, since those two senses are the most prominent ones in Victorian and neo-Victorian fiction and they are also regarded as extremes on the sensory scale. The nineteenth-century urban hygiene campaign transformed, in particular, the perception of olfaction.

This study concludes that our contemporary society bears many similarities to the Victorian period as a society of great change. The renewed interest in the Victorian signifies the twenty-first century reader´s desire for an idealized world set in another time, which yet appears familiar and recognizable. Neo-Victorian fiction thus functions as a means of knowing both your heritage and finding your own place in the present day. The sensory perception of foremost smell is part of our cultural heritage and thus the neo-Victorian novel mirrors the deo-Victorian concept.

    Abstract [en]

It has been written several papers on the use of comics as source material in history teaching. In this study, I focus on a selected title, comic book Kämpa för rättvisa. It claims itself that it can teach "about labor history". In a qualitative analysis, with metods from both narrative and semiotic fields, I analyze the comic books content and form. Based on the requirements of the history curriculum in sweden secondary school, which is materialized in a didactic history theory framework, I study the historical knowledge it conveys, how it looks in comparison with a traditional textbook and discuss the potential use of the selected comic book for history teaching in secondary schools.

In the result of my studies, it appeared that the comic book primarily conveys historical factual knowledge of industrialization and democratization in Sweden in 1900, Swedish labor history and development of the Swedish welfare during the 1900s. I also found signs that the substance abilities in the subject of history, such as the development of students' historical awareness, activation of their historical emapti and the ability to discuss (and see) the use of history can be worked with in teaching based on the comic books content. In comparison to a traditional textbook appeared comic book as more subjective in its communication of historical knowledge.

"Är man tjej får man tji, sa Anne-Marie": - En kvalitativ hermeneutisk representationsanalys om hur genus har porträtterats i den progressiva musikrörelsen.2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about the religious care in 19th century prisons in Sweden from a prison priest’s perspective. The spectacle of the study is Varberg former penal labour penitentiary, today fortress, and the main character is Hampus Franz August Lönegren. This case study is focused from a micro-historical perspective on the period 1867-1870 when Lönegren worked as a prison priest, with the goal to reverse the condemned prisoners from a sinful life to a Christian and moral life. The material used for the study consists of published and unpublished sources written by Lönegren himself and his work instructions. The survey aims to find out how he did his work, if he made local initiatives, which values he cared about and if he succeeded to discipline and/or civilize any prisoner through religious conversion. Discipline and civilizing are based on Michel Foucault and Norbert Elias respective theories: Discipline as the exercise of power and the Civilizing process. The results show that Lönegren followed the guidelines of his superiors as well as making several local initiatives. Values such as religion and friendship are promoted and a few prisoners become reversed and disciplined to civilized Christians, until their prison time was due, after which most of them relapsed to their earlier criminal life.

    Abstract [sv]

I följande uppsats behandlas ägonamn i Rönneberga by.

    Abstract [en]

As part of the so-called Bologna Process, syllabi in Swedish higher education have been revised and built around learning outcomes, focusing on skills and competencies, both generic and subject-specific. However, it can be questioned whether assessment practice have undergone corresponding changes. In this chapter I give examples of examination tasks set by History departments at Swedish universities and discuss to what extent they correspond with the learning outcomes for the courses. I also discuss the possibility to create "authentic assessment" tasks in order to better determine students' abilities and competencies of relevance in the field of History.

    Abstract [en]

Subject curricula of the Swedish school start with a section devoted to “Goals to aim for” or learning outcomes. The outcomes here described are more often than not generic skills or adherence to certain values with the purpose to serve as a foundation for future learning and development. Typical examples are the ability to consciously form and express ethical standpoints based on knowledge and personal experiences or to empathise with and understand other people’s situation.

In addition there is another section headed “Goals to be achieved” or learning objectives closely coupled to assessment criteria. These objectives can relate to content as well as to skill, but in both cases they can be described in a final form, as knowledge either gained or not gained. The teacher/examinator should be able to assess to what extent the pupils have attained these objectives and translate it into grades.

This double set of goals is, in it’s way, both natural and unavoidable. But an unforeseen consequence is that it renders the Swedish school system a certain degree of ambiguity which in turn can be seen as reflecting a transition from one paradigm of learning to another: one focussing on learning as content and product and the other on learning as process and development. At present the “learning as product paradigm” and a strive for accurate and reliable assessment criteria (that in turn could be used for quality assessment and accountability) dominate the political agenda.

The preliminary findings from a survey conducted in 2006/2007 indicate that History teacher vacillate between the content/product and the process/development mode of learning. Teachers express a certain degree of disappointment with the dominating learning tools – the textbooks – that in their opinion focus mainly on content. Working towards the learning outcomes of the curricula will therefore require that textbooks are supplemented with other learning material. The survey results, however, indicates that supplementary learning material plays a limited role in everyday teaching and as a consequence learning objectives rather than the desired learning outcomes become guiding principles. The teachers’ reluctance to step outside the boundaries created by the textbook may at least partly be explained from the fact that the theoretical base of the concept of learning as process and development is of recent date and therefore has had limited impact on teacher education.

The aim of the study is to contribute to the understanding of relations between educational goals and educational experience but also, hopefully, to add some useful items to the toolbox of History teaching practice.

    Abstract [en]

High-stake, end-of-course assignment tasks are not only experienced as stressful by students. It can also be questioned whether a single assignment task, however complex and many-sided, can address all relevant learning outcomes for a course and catch the multi-faceted character of historical knowledge. This paper discusses continuous assessment as an alternative to traditional end-of-course assessment. Previous studies as well as experiences from using continuous assessment in History courses at Halmstad University has been used in order to illustrate opportunities and drawbacks. A tentative conclusion is that continuous assessment does provide for more varied assignment tasks, thus giving teachers a broader view of students' achievements. Using continuous assessment, the assignment tasks can also more easily be experienced as part of the learning process and not only a checkpoint. Continuous assessment can therefore help students to develop a meta-understanding of their own learning.

Developing skills through history education2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

For the last few years my main part of my teaching has been within the field of Teacher Education. In order to prepare my students for their future profession as History teachers in the secondary school, my courses must of course deal with History, but also with how the learning of History can be facilitated and promoted. Learning History is of course linked to knowing History, and it was a somewhat strange experience when I suddenly realised that during my seven years of History studies – from the first undergraduate course to the PhD exam – no one had ever raised the issue of what it is to know History. Oh, we learned a lot about how to achieve historical knowledge, for instance through meticulous and critical source studies, but what that knowledge really consisted of was never discussed. So what do we mean when we say ‘Professor X really masters her subject’, or ‘Dr. Y displays a profound knowledge in his field of study’? Part of the knowledge is of course substantial (content) knowledge – but only a part. Collecting and storing facts – knowing that – doesn’t make you a historian. You must also be able to use the facts: interpret them, reason from them, make conclusions from them – knowing how. To this procedural knowledge can be added the conceptual knowledge that can be seen as a prerequisite for a scholarly approach to History. What students of History – on all levels, from primary school to postgraduate studies – is, then, not only to learn about what happened in the past but how to think about what happened in the past. And just as you will find it hard to learn playing the flute through listening to lectures or reading handbooks on flute-playing, thinking historically is very much a question of ‘learning by doing’ which means that History courses must give ample room for training the capacity of thinking. In my presentation I will further discuss possible interpretations of substance, procedure, and concepts in History studies as well as giving a few examples of how they can be illustrated and practised in class.

    Abstract [en]

Even if an overwhelming majority of historians acknowledges that history can harbour a multitude of interpretations and thus a multitude of narratives of the past, history – as encountered by students from primary school to the first year at the university – more often than not takes the form of a single, coherent narrative marked by an almost inexorable determinism. Ever since the beginning of the 19th century, such public narratives have served as instruments for promoting a shared sense of (national) community, not least within the compulsory school system. In our time, in our pluralistic societies where the idea of a common past shared by all has become untenable, such public narratives also pose a dilemma that is both political and ethical: how can social coherence, inclusion, and integration be achieved if (a) community is dependent on a shared past while (b) no shared past can be found? In this article I suggest that a possible way of solving, or steering clear of, this dilemma is through a history education that strives to promote an understanding of history as interpretations, as (re-)constructions of narratives of the past. Such an understanding underlines the importance of being able to deconstruct already existing narratives. It will also elucidate history’s role in society, a role that consists not only of what history says about the past but also of what history does for shaping our perceptions of the present and the future. And, finally, it offers students the tools needed for evaluating and choosing among the many narratives of the past, picking those that may serve them as aids for temporal orientation in everyday life.
