    Abstract [sv]

Advertising and the role of gender: A study of Sweden,France and Spain magazine advertisements2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The gender portrayals study aims to understanding how the roles of men and women are portrayed in magazine advertisements. This has been an issue investigated over the past decades as companies try to achieve a higher level of sales of their products and services and the gender issue influences in how this companies plan one advertising program or another. However, there is a debate among authors: some of them believe that advertising reflects what is already on society and others express that advertisers use the most convenient reality to sell their products. Thus, it makes us wonder what is the actual truth behind this debate. This thesis tries to answer the question of how men and women are portrayed in advertising campaigns. There are several studies on gender portrayals across countries but none that compares France, Spain and Sweden. This thesis tries to fill this gap.

The study is conducted following Hofstede framework that classifies countries whether masculine or feminine, and is completed by analyzing the data gathered from four magazines of these three countries. We classified this data following Courtney and Lockeretz classification scheme and analyzed the data obtained with theories of some other authors.

The results of this thesis show that males were dominant among working roles while females were in non-working roles. The findings might not add a huge contribution to this field of study but may be used as guiding tool for further research.

Rör sig elever tillräckligt mycket?: En studie om pojkar och flickors fysiska aktivitet på fyra olika skolor2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which children's physical activity during school  hours  are  met  in  relation  to  today’s  health  recommendations.  This  study  was  a quantitative  research  method  through  study  with  pedometers  and  observation.  The  main instrument was pedometers which the pupils wore during one day at school. The study group consisted of 74 students, made up of 36 boys and 38 girls from the 4th grade in four schools in  southern Sweden. The  results demonstrate  that  the boys were physical active 47-50 % of what  they should and  the girls 33-36 % of what  they should according  to recommendations. The boys  took about 3000 more  steps  than  the girls.  In our  study only one boy  reached  the recommended  amount  of  steps  per  day,  but  no  girl  did. The  conclusion  is  that  the  pupils  are  inactive  during  their  time  in  school.    There  are differences  in  boys'  and  girls'  physical  activity,  both  within  each  school  and  between  the schools. The observation showed that the girls stand still more than the boys during break and the girls are generally less active than the boys at all four schools.

Skyddande pojkar och omtänksamma flickor?: En språklig studie av personbeskrivande ord i barnböcker ur ett genusperspektiv.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Transnational Feminists – The White Ribbon2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In order to briefly demonstrate the contextual and transnational background of the women’s movement and the temperance movement in Sweden, this paper shortly introduces how female organizations were founded due to the lack of gender equality in the American temperance movement. Thereafter, an excerpt from my dissertation Temperate Women. Educators, Entrepreneurs and Political Agents. The White Ribbon 1900-1930  (2011) follows, in which I conclude the result of my analysis of the Swedish female, Christian, temperance organization The White Ribbon, which was a Swedish branch of The World's Woman's Christian Temperance Union, initially founded in the USA.

I briefly introduce the dissertation’s theoretical perspective of social movement, and give an account of how I analyze The White Ribbon as a political agent. I then summarize the result of my analysis of the White Ribboners participation on the political field and the public debate. In their ambitions to create a temperate society, the White Ribboners demanded women's political and social rights. The claimed that society could only progress if women participated in politics and decision making. The White Ribboners themselves were politically engaged and several had positions in local councils. All over the country organization ran philanthropic institutes, which were not only social companies, but also models or political innovations of how to deal with social problems. The work of the White Ribbon was generated from the feminist ideology of the American female teetotalers, and in the final discussion the conclusion highlights the American influence on the Swedish White Ribboners.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this text is to introduce perspectives, questions and empirical examples regarding children's identity construction in play with dolls and figures that represent women and men in both gender-typed and non gender-typed ways. Videotaped play of two 4-year old boys and three 5-year-old girls in a preschool setting is analyzed from complementary interactionistic and socio-cultural perspectives. The level of plasticity in the toyplay is interpreted. The results suggest ways in wich the gender-plastic character of toy play can be founded in children's intentions as well as in the toys' character as mediating tools. The analysis is based on whether children play with, through, in or beside their toy gestalts. These and other similar distinctions help to differentiate identity consequences in play.

    Abstract [sv]

Bäst i Halmstad: En kvalitativ och kvantitativ innehållsanalys av IS Halmias damlag under 1970 - 19802020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This literature study was conducted with the aim to examine how the literature work in school appears from a gender perspective. It was based on two questions: “according to scientific research, how is the pupil’s reading affected by gender norms?” and “according to scientific research, how can different views of gender be made visible by working with fiction in the classroom?”. Initially, the importance of equality according to the different national policy documents was presented. Next, the progression of children’s literature from a gender perspective was introduced, from the 1940s to the 1970s. Research showed that fiction can influence children’s thoughts about gender, and how both schoolbooks and fiction occasionally strengthen traditional gender norms. The method for collecting data went in line with a model, where the search process was divided into two phases. The key words were chosen and the databases that were used were ERIC, APA Psychinfo and SwePub, along with some manual searches. The result indicates that gender norms play a significant role when choosing and interpreting books. Children’s intertextual knowledge is crucial for how they are interpreting texts. The result also shows that the teacher has an important role when making different views of gender visible, and three ways to do this is by making conscious book choices, by engaging the students in discussions about books, and by roleplaying with the students.

Based on the result of this study, further research will be made with the aim to examine if the teacher’s treatment of the students in booktalks have an impact on their perception of gender.

Professional migration from the United States to Europe: Composite vignettes of black male basketball players from underserved communities2021In: Psychology of Sport And Exercise, ISSN 1469-0292, E-ISSN 1878-5476, Vol. 54, article id 101882Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To explore how the intersectional perspective of being a Black male from an underserved community shaped the professional cultural transition of American basketball players to Europe. Design: and Method: The seven Black male athletes, who met the criteria of playing at least one year in a professional European basketball league and spending their formative years in an underserved community in the USA, participated in this study. Life story interviews, lasting between one and 2 h, were analysed through the principles of narrative analysis. Creative non-fiction was used to represent the findings in the form of composite vignettes using the words of the participants to create an evocative and meaningful experiential reconstruction. Findings: The analysis uncovered three primary themes; steppingstones to becoming a professional basketball migrant; from America to Europe: a whole new world once again; and “don't bother to unpack your bags:” from ups and downs to settlement plans. Within these themes, the intersectional identity of being a Black male from a poor community underpinned the storyline. Conclusions: All seven participants left their underserved community at some point during their teenage years, and this transition into a more affluent, White dominated society proved beneficial for the move to Europe. Further, the shared intersectional identity of being an African American male from a low socioeconomic community had critical implications for how they experienced the cultural transition to Europe, and how they were received by the host environment. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

    Abstract [sv]

Gender Equality and Intergenerational Mobility: Cross-country Results2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, intergenerational mobility and gender equality have captured widespread attention. This study aims to examine the relationship between the two to provide policy insights that benefit both polarized issues. This study reviewed the existing literature and formulated hypotheses that early childhood development has long-lasting impacts on adults' outcomes and is a decisive factor in determining social mobility in adulthood. Gender equality policies play huge roles in this period, mitigating adverse effects from childhood and providing opportunities for disadvantaged children in early childhood development. This study tests the hypotheses with multiple regression and performs sensitivity analysis with an alternative proxy. The result is that public spending on childcare, female labour market participation, and child poverty are statistically significant with social mobility, while weeks of maternity leave and poverty rates of single-earner families are not.

Solidaridad transnacional: Narrativa feminista2016In: Interpretextos, no 15, p. 49-66Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

The objective of this article is performative; in other words, from an academic perspective a face-to-face narrative is constructed and reviews how feminist activism articulates with the public collective, by questioning patriarchal order. From the summons of Not one less and Green Tide, the methodological approach is based on a feminist phenomenology involving different narratives that combine theory and practice from a decolonial point of view, as well as for being expressions of an intersubjective and pluralistic solidarity. It is to say that, feminism / feminisms and the public collective confront power from transgressive and conscious acts, weaving ties in order to generate changes in normative values. The nature of these proposals revitalizes the notion of citizenship and also confronts the neoliberal agenda, integrated to state policy.

Interconnections: Narrating Nordic feminisms2018In: Labrys, ISSN 1676-9651, Vol. 31, p. 1-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines different narratives of feminism in the Nordic region, drawing on a variegated material collected during ethnographic fieldwork with feminist actors. At first, we examine how women and lgbt feminists of color navigate and negotiate everyday space in a struggle against racism, transphobia, misogyny and islamophobia, and suggest that these enactments shape a narrative of feminism around a logic of interconnections. Then, we explore the logic of a current influential developmental narrative of Nordic feminism as a forerunner on a global arena. Here, we offer a set of autoethnographical vignettes to highlight and explore the key logics such a narrative relies upon. We propose that a feminist narrative of interconnections illuminate another narrative logic than the developmental logic currently influential in narrations of Nordic feminisms. Creating linkages to historical memory and to the present multiplicity of relations of power, we suggest that a feminist narrative of interconnections opens up new political questions and new feminist agendas in this context. We use these discussions to illuminate a shift in the relationship between civil society and the state in this context and suggest that a methodology of histories as connected fruitfully can capture these changes, due to its possibility to bridge, and attend to, the ambivalence inherent in history as multiple.

The bodies of others in Swedish feminism2018In: Gender, Place and Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography, ISSN 0966-369X, E-ISSN 1360-0524, Vol. 25, no 7, p. 978-993Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The body – or, more specifically, women’s bodies – has long been one of feminism’s central topics. This discussion has ranged from explorations of the cultural meaning of biology to the challenging of classification systems regulating bodies not only culturally coded as female or male but also understood through race regimes. This article seeks to explore the location of bodies within Swedish feminism, examining how women’s bodies are understood, designated and acted upon in feminist agendas. Our focus is on the location that bodies take in political conflicts among and between feminists. In particular, we explore the impact of the presence of black bodies within the field of Swedish feminism. On a theoretical level, this article bridges decolonial feminist contributions of Black, Chicano and Latin American feminist thought on the body. The research methodology combined autoethnography with feminist ethnography, including an analysis of 25 narratives of young feminist activists engaged in public resistance against, and confrontation with, the growing presence of right-wing xenophobic social movements and political parties in the public sphere. © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Genusanalys av två kvinnliga karaktärer i fantasyserien Game of Thrones: "Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it." (Lloyd Alexander)2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Denna uppsats analyserar hur genus gestaltas i fantasyserien Game of Thrones.

    Abstract [sv]

The Androchair: Performing Gynaecology through the Practice of Gender Critical Design2017In: The Design Journal, ISSN 1460-6925, E-ISSN 1756-3062, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 181-198Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper highlights the important role that design plays when it comes to women's overall experiences of ther gynaecological examination. It exemplifies how the examination can become renegotiable through the practice of a critical design. We will reflect this in the design of the contemporary gynaecological examination chair (GEC). We used women's experiences as a starting point for the design of an Androchair (a conceptual male equivalent of the GEC), in order to make the experiences critically visible. Inspired by the view of the gynaecological examination as a performance where the Androchair is represented as a prop and was placed on a stage as a discussion object during a public seminar. The Androchair allowed for both critical and multiple readings of the GEC and through that, the gynaecology examination at large. Moreover, it stimulated a discussion about alternative ideas towards achieving a more positive experience. © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

    Abstract [en]

This study was conducted with the aim to make gender representation visible in books that are being read-aloud to pupils in the grades 0-3. The study was based on two questions: “What does the representation of gender look like in the books that are being read aloud to the pupils?” and “What does the figuration of the books' characters look like from a gender perspective?”. Initially, the importance of equality according to the different national policy documents was presented. Swedish schools have a mission, according to the curriculum, to achieve equality. This is necessary because research showed that children were affected by gender norms and made choices based on them. Therefore, several authors meant that teachers should be making conscious book choices, where they choose norm-critical books. According to the curriculum, children should face different kinds of stories in school that give them new knowledge and insight. The read-aloud book that the teacher chooses could be used as a tool for opening discussions about gender. The method for collecting data went in several steps. First, several libraries across the country were asked to send their statistics of the most borrowed children's literature in the age gap of 6-9 or 9-12. The statistics then were compiled into one list of the 18 most popular children´s books. A survey was then conducted with the compiled list of books, and it was sent out into two Facebook groups, for teachers to answer. The teachers answered the question if they have or are planning to read this book with their pupils. The five most popular books were then analysed with the help of our own constructed analysis-tool, and the method for analysing was qualitative text analysis and semiotic picture analysis. This study's theoretical framework was Hirdman´s (1988; 2003) theory of gender system, gender contract and three different formulas to express gender stereotypes, Harding´s (1986) theory of symbolic and structural gender and Nikolajeva´s (2017) scheme of stereotypical attributes. The result showed that the representation of gender was rather equal between the two sexes. The characters' portrayal on the other hand went mostly in line with the stereotypes for their gender, with some exceptions. Female characters were mostly portrayed as caring and passive, with makeup and long eyelashes. Male characters on the other hand were mostly portrayed as active and brave. Finally, further research should be made where the impact of fiction on young children is analysed, and there is also a need for further research on Swedish children's books from a gender perspective. Further research could also be made where booktalks after a read-aloud session are used to open discussions about gender.

    Abstract [en]

In this study we meet women who gradually change our picture of the "double penalty", which complicates our view of a life of abuse and drug dependence, and the life in a women’s prison, but also simplifies the notion of the deep love they have for their children. Since these mothers have worked a lot with themselves and emerging from long periods of drug dependence, we have experienced the force which is released when someone is working with something she is passionate about. To help others and to allow the individual to accept help has guided this story about the human beings ability to get up and move on. The fact that the love seems to work side by side with the indebted problem has aroused our interest and is discussed in the text as a running theme. By allowing the individual emotions to meet sociological theories widens the perspective to an angle involving both macro- and micro-levels of society. This essay tries to explain the relationships as well as the incompatible roles and its impact on mothers in prison. Thomas J. Scheff's theory of social bonds is leading the discussion and is critical to understanding the need for consideration as well as the devastating impact of shame on the individual and society. Human diversity and multiple views of reality will find meaning in a social psychological interpretation and analysis originated from an innovative study.

Damsport och sport: En diakron studie om könsmarkering i introduktionen av sportnyheter på TV och radio2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Cultural Materialism in the Production and Distribution of Exploitative Lesbian Film: A Historical Case Study of Children of Loneliness (1935)2020In: Nordic Journal of English Studies, ISSN 1502-7694, E-ISSN 1654-6970, Vol. 19, no 5, p. 121-154Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Raymond Williams developed a vocabulary and framework for analyzing the ideological forces at work in literature and art, as objects, but also in terms of their production and distribution. This article looks back at his elaboration of cultural materialism and its relationship to film in Preface to Film (1954), written with Michael Orrin, as a way of understanding the media traces of the lost film Children of Loneliness (dir. Richard C. Kahn). The film was an early sex education about homosexuality and this article explores its connections to early exploitation films as a cinematic form, and the dominant and emergent discourses that were used to promote it, as a well as at structures of feeling that these discourses reflect.

Doing and undoing risk: the mutual constitution of risk and heteronormativity in contemporary society2017In: Journal of Risk Research, ISSN 1366-9877, E-ISSN 1466-4461, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 418-432Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper develops the concepts of ‘doing’ and ‘undoing’ risk, a new approach to risk research that echoes the ‘doing gender’ of gender studies. In this way, we combine intersectional and risk theory and apply the new perspective to empirical material. To better explore the doing and undoing, or the performance, of risk, we will refer to practices that simultaneously (re)produce and hide socio-political norms and positions, played out in contemporary, hierarchical relations of power and knowledge. The aim is to develop a theoretical understanding of doing and undoing risk. The study makes use of transcripts from five focus group interviews with men and women, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of different ages living in Sweden to develop a theory of ‘doing risk’. The doing of risk of our informants takes place within the frame of a hegemonic heteronormativity. The way that risks are perceived and done in everyday life therefore always needs to be read within a frame of prevailing structures of power. This counts for all of us as we are all part of the hegemonic power structures and thereby are both subject to the intersecting doings of risk and performatively reproducing these power structures in practice. © 2017 Taylor & Francis.

Everyday places, heterosexist spaces, and risk in contemporary Sweden2016In: Culture, Health and Sexuality, ISSN 1369-1058, E-ISSN 1464-5351, Vol. 18, no 1, p. 45-57Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Subjective feelings of risk are a central feature of everyday life, and evidence shows that people who do not conform to contemporary normative notions are often more exposed to everyday risks than others. Despite this, normative notions are rarely acknowledged as risk objects. By drawing on the theory of ‘doing’ and ‘undoing’ risk, which combines intersectional and risk theory, this study contributes new perspectives on the everyday risks in contemporary society that face people who many would label as being ‘at risk’ – lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The study consists of five focus group interviews with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of different ages in Sweden. Findings pinpoint risks and how these are done and un-done in different spheres of interviewees’ lives: the emotional risks prevailing in their private lives; the risk of discrimination at work and in relations with other institutions; and the risk of violence and harassment in public places. These risks are all related to the heteronormative order in which the mere fact of being lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender is perceived as a risk. © 2016 Taylor & Francis.

The Continued Support of Patriarchal Ideologies in the Nancy Drew Series: A Comparative Study of Nancy Drew: The Scarlet Slipper Mystery & Nancy Drew Diaries: The Magician’s Secret 2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The well-loved Nancy Drew from 1930 has continued to solve mysteries in 1974 and 2015, though the series can no longer claim to be unconventional. Even though Nancy was a revolutionary character in 1930, the thought of a mystery-solving female is not as controversial anymore. This essay argues that the recently published Nancy Drew Diaries still advocate patriarchal ideologies seen in the 1974 version of The Scarlet Slipper Mystery, specifically ideas about gender roles, conformability and homosexuality. In order to investigate if 2015 The Magician’s Secret and 1947 The Scarlet Slipper Mystery portrayed similar patriarchal ideas deconstructive, feminist, and queer theories have been used. They revealed that both books contain patriarchal views and depict them in similar ways, even though the newer book is more implicit in its portrayal. This suggests that even as the vaster society believes itself to move forward, patriarchal ideologies continue to affect our portrayal of men and women in the media, though in a more implicit way than before.

Genus: Identifiera och ändra samhällets mönster när det kommer till kvinnligt och manligt2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how ten women experience studying and working in a male-dominated organization, the Swedish Armed forces, from a gender perspective. This study answers the following questions: How do female cadets describe and experience norms and values in the organizational culture, from a gender perspective? How does the organizational culture contribute to women´s making of identity in relation to the gender discourse that are presented in the Swedish Armed Forces? How do the female cadets formulate their professional identity from a gender perspective? The purpose of the study is to make the gender discourses in military work visible. We answer the questions with a qualitative method with ten semi-structured interviews with women who are or will study to become an officer in the Armed Forces. The empirical material has been interpreted through earlier research and theory about gender, organizational culture and identity.

The study shows that women want to be part of something bigger and want to be noticed for their achievements and not for their gender which not always agrees with the external and internal cultural perspective. They feel a great sense of belonging and feel that the existing norms regarding gender and gender roles in the organization will change despite experiences that speak against it. The making of identity is influenced by social context in the organization and there are cultural factors and context that affect their experiences of their professional identity.

    Abstract [en]

During the reign of traditional forms of organization - excess specialization and hierarchy - female participation in paid, ‘statistically counted’ work was much lower than for men. Insofar as women participated in working life, they tended to cluster on the lower levels of organization, as well as in highly specialized work. The main exception was health care where the work roles were more varied, but where there was a strong element of traditional family patterns brought into the workplace. This situation gave rise, several decades ago, to a movement towards more women in work, more equal opportunities in work, more women on higher organizational levels, more women in varied and challenging work and a more even distribution of men and women in all spheres of working life. In one important respect, this movement has been successful. In all the Scandinavian countries the share of women in work closely approaches that of men, in fact Sweden and Norway are world leaders in female employment. But what about the other issues? © Palgrave Macmillan, a division of Macmillan Publishers Limited 2011.

Ute på djupt vatten?: - en kvalitativ studie om pojkar och flickors tal om simundervisningen i skolan2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Differentiations in visibility - male advantages and female disadvantages in gender-segregated programmes2020In: Frontiers in Sociology, E-ISSN 2297-7775, Vol. 5, article id 563204Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article stresses the importance of understanding that women and men in gender-segregated programmes experience their gender minority positions very differently. It stems from an interest in the kind of interventions that academia should address in order to reduce gender segregation and provide women and men with the same educational opportunities and personal development. In relation to the obvious and continuing gender differences along a horizontal dimension, previous research seems to have had a limited impact in breaking gender stereotypes and promoting women and men to more atypical fields. The empirical data consists of 25 semi-structured, individual interviews from underrepresented students' gender-related experiences/thoughts about their programmes. By using the concepts of “visibility,” “sense of belonging,” and “negotiating otherness” to analyze how negotiation and belonging are part of students' everyday university lives this study's most important contributions are its findings regarding the differentiations in visibility. A continuum of visibility experiences is explored, from men who receive positive attention to women who are being considered as less knowledgeable. Our visibility scale indicates, as does previous research, that there are differences between how female and male students become visible, but the differences can also appear within both groups of students. This knowledge is crucial when designing interventions so as to provide positive study environments for both women and men. Also—in a broader perspective—it is important in order to recruit and ensure that gender minority students remain in the programs. © 2020 Heikkilä, Isaksson and Stranne.

    Abstract [en]

The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and Gentleman Jack (2019–2022) are both television dramas based on the private journals of Anne Lister (1791–1840). The diaries were not only partly written in code but make use of idiosyncratic terms, and  the two adaptations deal in different ways with the language used in the diaries. This essay examines the language of Anne Lister’s diaries and compares their two adaptations, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister and Gentleman Jack, with a particular focus on the use of queer vocabulary. © 2022 The Author(s). I Analysen tillämpas Yvonne Hirdmans genusteori.

    Abstract [en]

Research points to the need for developing methods for to change established gender orders and converting gender perspectives into practical action. Based on a gender equality project at the Centre for Health Technology Halland (HCH), this article discusses the potential of critical design as an agent within the framework of gender equality work and work for change. The project worked with critical design as a tool for making visible what a gender perspective can mean in the context of one’s work, in this case health technology. It resulted in a conceptual prototype called the Androchair – a medical chair designed for men but based on women’s experiences of the gynaecological chair. The aim of the article is to study and discuss the significance of including a prototype, that is an object, in the gender equality work of an organisation. Special focus is placed on whether, and in that case how, a prototype can influence notions of gender and gender equality in relation to one’s own area of work. The empirical data consists of qualitative interviews with staff at the HCH. Actor-network theory is used to interpret the data. The analysis shows how the Androchair raises questions of power, needs and interpretative prerogative in relation to what one does in one’s work. Furthermore, it does this to a greater extent than more conventional ways of conveying knowledge about gender equality (such as academic texts, statistics and Power Point presentations). Physical objects are perceived of as making gender and gender equality issues more tangible.

Gender Politics in Asia: Women Manoeuvring within Dominant Gender Orders2007Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This volume brings together an impressive array of internationally recognized scholars from around the world to examine the many facets of gender politics in Asia. Its central concern is how women in various gendered contexts in Asia position themselves in the (re)production of gender relations, and how they manoeuver in order to preserve or alter these. It covers fields as varied as the use of dress as a political weapon, the practice of healing as an indirect challenge to the dominant gender and political orders, and religious ordination as a struggle for equity in Buddhism.
