    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: This paper aims to present a systematic review of scholarly articles focused on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in developing countries and published during the period 2004 to 2014 in international journals.

    Design/methodology/approach: This paper applied a bibliometric analysis to 101 articles on CSR research focused on developing countries.

    Findings: The study confirms that the most prevalent CSR themes addressed in journals have been social issues, followed by environmental issues in a distant second, with ethics-related issues receiving the least attention. Also, as CSR research in developing countries constitutes an emerging stream of literature, an overwhelming dominance of empirical (qualitative) papers aimed at exploring and/or seeking interpretations to CSR motivations have been confirmed.

    Research limitations/implications: An important limitation of this study is in relation to the methods applied. In the first place, this review is based on two electronic databases: ABI/INFORM Global (ProQuest) and Web of Science Core Collection: Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED). This means that research published in international journals that are not included in either of these databases will be omitted.

    Practical implications: This review provides useful guidance for future CSR research focused on developing countries thereby providing a foundation for future research in this stream of CSR research.

    Social implications: The findings of this study suggest that much CSR knowledge in developing countries reflects the unique social issues that call for companies to adopt different CSR interventions when operating in developing countries.

    Originality/value: Although this paper is not the first to systematically review CSR research, but it is one of the initial attempts, to the best of the knowledge, to systematically review the state of CSR knowledge in the context of developing countries.

    Contemporary society is often described as a “learning society”, in which citizens are educated to reflect on and evaluate their well- being and lifestyles. In school, this is done through assessments: ratings and evaluations, in working life through staff appraisals and health evaluations, and in everyday life, media is used for self-assessments. Focus in this article is on the later. Mass media has become an increasingly common tool to produce and promote knowledge about health and lifestyle. In various edutainment programs experts and coaches supports participants to improve their lives in one way or another. In this article I will focus on the series “Toppform” (Top shape) broadcasted on Swedish television in 2008. Top Shape is one of the health and lifestyle TV- series that use coordinated communication channels to interact with its viewers. Parallel with the program being broadcasted on television, it is also represented with material on the Internet. This study focuses on the material that is represented on the website of the TV-series, which also contains material used for teaching in school settings. By that, the material constitutes an interesting encounter between entertainment, school education and public health education and is therefore fruitful to study from a perspective of health communication. I adopt a critical discourse analytic approach, in which power relations and the constitution of social practices are in focus.

    The aim of this article is to show how governmentality may be used to analyze historical events and discourses, and how this historical analysis can be used as a perspective to problematize contemporary discourses. The example used in this article is from my research on life-extension handbooks published in Sweden 1700-1930, and by this I stress handbooks as a noninstitutional educative arena. I am advocating governmentality as a toolbox to analyze how various forms of power operate and how different levels of power integrate and conflict in this arena. In doing so, I recommend governmentality as a critical and empirical approach to analyze various forms of power relations and governance. I exemplify the flexibility of the toolbox by using genealogy and governmentality in combination with linguistic tools from Critical Discourse Analysis and Norman Fairclough. In this way, I want to stress the critical gaze and the importance of situation in time and space by arguing for greater respect for the variants of the concepts of genealogy and governmentality. © 2013 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

    Drömmen om evigt liv och evig ungdom är inte ny. Föreställningarna om vägen dit är ungefär desamma idag som för 300 år sedan. Men de tekniska möjligheterna har vidgat gränserna.Att förbli ung, eller åtminstone se ung ut, är ett ideal som växer sig allt starkare. Åldrande och död ska bekämpas, att hålla sig ung och att leva länge är viktigt. Det gäller att träna och sköta sin hälsa.Det kan förefalla vara ett modernt ideal, men det är det inte. Människans kamp för att förlänga livet, och drömmen om evig ungdom, har rötter långt bak i historien. Uppfattningarna om hur man ska nå dit har också stått sig förvånansvärt väl genom tiderna.- Grunden i de praktiska råden är sig lika från 1700-talet och fram till våra dagar. Det handlar om att äta och dricka måttligt, leva naturligt, sova ordentligt, motionera, leva lantliv och andas frisk luft, säger Janicke Andersson, som disputerar vid Tema äldre och åldrande, Linköpings universitet. Hon har studerat historiska handböcker om hur man förlänger livet och jämfört dem med dagens debatt och rådgivningsböcker.

    På 1700-talet var uppfattningen att människan hade en optimal ålder, ända upp till 250 år (som sades vara patriarkernas ålder) och att vi hade degenererat och därför levde betydligt kortare. Det borde gå att uppnå den optimala åldern igen genom att leva rätt.Idag finns ingen bortre gräns för hur länge vi tror oss kunna leva. Inrättningar som Immortality institute, Life extension institute och föreningar som Transhumanisterna arbetar för ett längre eller t o m evigt liv här på jorden. Med transplantationskirurgi kan vi byta ut utnötta kroppsdelar, hormoninjektioner och piller ska bromsa åldrandet, och döda kan frysas ned i förhoppning om att tinas upp igen den dag det blir tekniskt möjligt att få liv i dem.Att sköta sin hälsa och sträva efter att leva länge har blivit en fråga om moral. Budskapet är att med rätt livsstil går det att förhindra åldrandet och behålla sitt unga utseende. Skröplighet blir därför ett tecken på moraliska brister. Själva livsförloppet har blivit ett personligt projekt som handlar om självkontroll och självdisciplin. Det gäller inte bara att leva länge, utan också att leva aktivt. Successfull ageing och Active ageing är rörelser i tiden.”Hur man åldras styr man själv. Det är på dig det beror hur du hanterar situationen” heter det i en modern handbok.Tidigare användes religionen för att underbygga detta budskap. Endast som god kristen kunde man uppnå ett långt liv. Idag har hälsorörelser övertagit mycket av denna gamla retorik. De populära stenåldersdieterna, exempelvis, bygger på uppfattningen att vi har förlorat ett paradisiskt tillstånd, Edens lustgård, som vi kan hitta tillbaka till.

    Vi vill uppnå det eviga livet, men vi vill göra det här på jorden och själva bestämma spelreglerna, skriver Janicke Andersson.

    Old bastard – rebellion against or a repetition of negative age codes?

    In contemporary media and scientific contexts, it has become increasingly popular to launch today’s elderly as different from previous generations of older people, especially emphasized is that today’s elderly will have more attitude and set higher demands on society. The TVseries Pensionärsjävlar is based on this idea of today’s and tomorrow’s elderly as different and more rebellious than previous generations. The purpose of this article is to analyze and discuss how age and age codes are used as a prerequisite for, but also are challenged in the series. The result shows that chronological age is almost absent in the series, instead age coding is performed by physical attributes and verbal acts. Most common attributes are those connected to decreased functionality, such as walker, wheelchair, walking stick etcetera. The most common taboo joked about is sexuality, and other common themes are decreased functionality, child/youth- like behavior and traffic. In the article I discuss how these themes and attributes are negotiated in relation to age.

    BACKGROUND: Individuals with disabilities are often far removed from the labour market and research shows that employers’ negative attitudes toward persons with disabilities create a barrier to attaining employment. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate Swedish employers’ experiences and attitudes toward hiring persons with various disabilities. METHODS: A vignette method with accompanying questions was used. A total of 212 employers, who were actively seeking to hire, were recruited via an online employment site and participated in the study. RESULTS: The results indicated that there is some interest for employers to hire persons with disabilities and that this depended on the type of disability a person has. Other results demonstrated that previous experience of employing persons with disabilities was linked to greater interest in hiring, that employers had greater interest to hire than they thought other employers had, and that openness about the disability was deemed as an important factor in the hiring process. CONCLUSION: The novelty of this study is its use of a vignette design to investigate employers’ attitudes in Sweden. Moreover, the results are much in line with international research. This contributes to knowledge and development of increasing employment for persons with disabilities. © 2015 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

    Marine energy technologies can contribute to meeting sustainability challenges, but they are still immature and dependent on public support. This paper employs the Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) framework to analyze the development and diffusion of Swedish marine energy up until 2014. While there were promising device developers, relevant industrial capabilities, and world-class research, the system suffered from weaknesses in several important innovation processes. Finally, the analysis identifies the lack of informed political direction as a critical blocking factor and highlights its connection to domestic market potential. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

    Electronic waste (e-waste) has a peculiar relation to space. It is well-documented how a large part of discarded electronic devices still remain in people’s homes, instead of reaching the recycling centres. This is especially true with digital media and communication technologies such as computers and mobile phones (ironically the devices with the shortest life cycles). This phenomenon has been described by the term “closet-fill” (as opposed to land-fill). However, representations of electronic waste in public discourse such as news reports, seldom focus on this aspect. Instead, they tend to portray e-waste dumping sites as strange, almost alien spaces. Sublime imagery invites the viewer to a contemplation over Western consumerism in a fashion recognizable from visual arts. Consequently, imagery of electronic waste has also become an object of aesthetic value in the works of renowned visual artists such as Pieter Hugo and David LaChapelle, who have gained recognition because of this inclusion of imagery of e-waste in their photographic art. The aim of this paper is to address these aesthetic qualities of electronic waste. The purpose is to contribute to the expanding literature on media materialities and waste with a conceptual understanding of manifestations of electronic waste in popular discourse. The paper draws on theories on media aesthetics, environmental communication and waste management to build an analytic framework that explores the benefits and limitations of presenting electronic waste as an aesthetic object. Empirically it engages in analyses of visual representations of electronic waste. The paper addresses the tension between aesthetic contemplation/appreciation, and critical information. It could be argued that if e-waste is to be presented and understood as an urgent topic, there might be a problem if it is portrayed as something strange, exotic or even beautiful. The concept ”toxic sublime” has been used in analyses of visual representations of pollution, and Peeples (2011: 383) argues that this construction of the toxic as sublime comes with a risk: “It may predispose people to look for toxins in the extraordinary, as opposed to on the shelves of their garages”. It could be argued that e-waste faces a similar problem. The focus on the sublime strangeness of e-waste “dumping sites” is an ineffective way of creating proximity and urgency to the e-waste problem, something that takes place somewhere else than in our homes. LeBel (2015) argues that e-waste aesthetics fails to address the temporal dimension of waste (e.g. planned obsolescence, toxicity). This paper intends to add to that argument by highlighting the tension between the closet-fill and the toxic sublime

    The Defence Commission has proposed that the Swedish Armed Forces once again will be assigned the main task of defending Sweden against an armed attack. Defence against an armed attack has gained more focus since the defence decision 2015 and prior to the upcoming defence decision it is even more emphasized. Are the politics and the Swedish Armed Forces in agreement regarding the meaning and implications of this on basis of contemporary threats?

    The overall aim of the study is to understand the interaction between politics and the Swedish Armed Forces in the designing and shaping of the Swedish Armed Forces. This study has a starting point in the prelude to the planned political defence decision 2020 and aims to understand some of this major context. It is focusing on identifying the coherence between the Defence Committee and the Swedish Armed Forces’ military strategic leadership in terms of the meaning of an armed attack being the primary basis of designing and shaping the Swedish Armed Forces. In addition, important factors that have an impact on the interaction between politics and the Swedish Armed Forces are identified.

    The empiricism is taken from international law, the military strategic doctrine of the Swedish Armed Forces, reports from the Defence Commission and interviews with members of the Defence Committee and the military strategic leadership of the Swedish Armed Forces.

    The results show that there is lack of coherence within the Defence Committee as well as between the Defence Committee and the Swedish Armed Forces regarding the meaning of the proposed main task to the Swedish Armed Forces and how it should relate to other tasks. There is an illusion regarding the definition of an armed attack. In reality it is the government that, under constitutional responsibility, defines an armed attack when there is an act of aggression. In addition, it is identified that it is suitable to mutually improve trust between politics and the Swedish Armed Forces by increasing knowledge of each other's realities.

    Abstract [en]

    This article introduces an approach within social work called green social. It is argued that this approach has a critical potential in its ability to respond to urgent issues concerning people’s current and future living conditions. It is further argued that in addition to its traditional involvement in problematic distribution of resources, social work can act upon linkages between social issues and issues concerning environmental and climate crisis when integrating areas of knowledge from other disciplines. Such linkages imply a revision of the construct ”person-in-environment” that traditionally denote a delimited notion of environment as the ”social environment”, thereby disregarding the biophysical environment that human beings are a part of. The article discusses concepts such as ”sustainable welfare”, ”de-growth” and ”transition” and presents examples of so-called ecosocial interventions while also making an argument for strengthening community work in Sweden.

    The basic components of the health literacy are ability to get access to the health-related informationand understand it. For the young people the most appropriate source of information, including abouthealth, is school. Studies on health education showed that there are some problematic issues in thehealth education in the schools in Sweden which result in non-application of the knowledge by thestudents.Thus, the aim of this study was to explore and analyze school-based health education in Sweden fromthe youth perspective. The purpose of the study was to indicate the best practices of health educationwithin schools in Sweden and reveal the most problematic fields and gaps in it from the point of viewof the youth.Qualitative research was conducted for exploring the research problem. Therefor semi-structuredinterviews were held with young people aged 18-25 having studied in the schools in Sweden. The datawas analyzed within social learning theory with application of thematic analysis methodology. Besides,literature and previous researches review has been conducted as a background study.In the result of this research it was revealed that although young people are satisfied with the resultsof the health classes and show trust to the school as a source of information, some information lacksin the health education, e.g. mental health education. Besides, some issues have been noticed as to theschool environment around health education which can impede application of the health knowledge.

    Framing Terrorism in Nordic News Media: A study regarding acts of terror, involved actors, and political messages during 2014-20182019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    The overall aim of this study was to investigate what common trends are within the communication of acts of terror towards the public within the Nordic countries. This was done by positioning the portrayal of terrorism within the theory of framing by Entman (1993) and the model of framing terrorism by Norris, Kern and Just (2003), which provided the following sub-topics to analyze during the research in regards to terrorism: (1) problem definitions, (2) diagnoses, (3) moral evaluations, (4) treatment recommendations, and (5) political messages.

    The method was based on quantitative content analysis, which made use of physical, categorical, and thematic distinctions surrounding the framing of terrorism. The sample size consisted out of 138 articles which were analyzed based on these distinctions. The included articles originated from the following online editorials of publisher The Local: The Local Denmark, The Local Sweden, and The Local Norway.

    Results indicated an overall more objective approach from the tabloid in regards to terrorism, meaning that mostly only facts were provided but no political messages. Biases within the articles were not directly found, though a focus on male and Muslim perpetrators in regards to acts of terror was apparent.

    Conclusions surrounding the analysis include that the editorials generally appear to be protecting the public by not mentioning too many details surrounding acts of terror. The editorials also seemingly contribute to the avoidance of radicalizing potential actors in regards to acts of terror by leaving out details such as diagnoses and moral evaluations. The editorials were furthermore found to hold an objective tone and did not subject to sensationalism.

    In this article, we interrogate the utility of conceptualising the ‘first and last mile’ (FLM) as a ‘challenge’ to be addressed through automated and integrated mobility services. We critically engage with the concept through a design anthropological approach which takes two steps so as: to complicate literatures that construct the FLM as a place where automated, service-based and micro-mobility innovations will engender sustainable modal choices above individual automobility; and to demonstrate how people’s situated mobility competencies and values, shape social and material realities and future imaginaries of everyday mobilities. To do so, we draw on ethnographic research into everyday mobility practices, meanings and imaginaries in a suburban neighbourhood in Sweden. We show how locally situated mobilities both challenge the spatial and temporal underpinnings of the first and last mile concept, and resist universalist technology-driven automation narratives. We argue that instead of attempting to bridge gaps in seemingly linear journeys through automated systems, there is a need to account for the practices, tensions and desires embedded in everyday mobilities. © 2023 The Author(s).

    Automated vehicles (AVs) have the potential to cause profound shifts across a wide range of areas of human life, including economic structures, land use, lifestyles and personal well-being. Most current social science on AVs is narrowly framed. Research on public attitudes has focused on whether people are likely to accept and use AVs. We contend that failing to anticipate a wider range of profound social implications may have serious negative consequences, and that social scientists from a range of disciplinary perspectives can provide invaluable insights. Our conclusions are the product of a workshop in London held in 2018 to discuss the place of social science research in relation to the development of AVs. This paper summarises a core selection of our concerns, interests, theoretical and substantive points of reference and aspirations for a constructive role in this field of research and development. © 2020 The Authors.     Abstract [en]

    Over the past two decades, trends of integration processes in terms of citizens of different ethnicities, different gender and different sexual belongings, etc. has grown thanks to debates and new legislations. A marginalized and discriminated group in society such as women, immigrants, homosexuals, transsexuals and people with disabilities during this time has gained momentum in the community. The curiosity over whether these developments have changed our attitudes and values to the world around us, and if so how, is the reason for this master's thesis in disability studies.

    The Swedish development forms the basis for my belief on a younger generation of people who would be more tolerant than previous generations, in terms of what is considered to belong to the norm in our society, or not. The purpose of this study is therefore to increase knowledge about what beliefs young people today have about people with disabilities. The questions that the study is based on are: What does young people characterizes as a normal  or an abnormal human being? What thoughts do young people have about the people who deviate from the norm? What beliefs do they have regarding people with disabilities?

    To achieve the objective, the choice has fallen on a qualitative approach. Empirical data were collected through a focus group of four 18-year-olds, where they based on specific themes, have associated and discussed freely. For the processing and interpretation of the data collection, Moscovici (1984) theory of social representations has been used. By interpreting the focus groups discussions, the result shows that people with disabilities still are highly regarded and treated as people who should be "corrected" by the individual / medical model.

    Epidemiological research has so far failed to explain the high incidence of occupational disorders among home care workers (HCWs) and the great differences in organizational incidence rate. A qualitative approach may contribute to a deeper understanding of work group reasoning and handling in a more contextual manner. The aim of this grounded theory study was to gain a deeper understanding of the main concern in the processes of recognizing, communicating and reporting occupational disorders among HCWs. Focus group interviews were conducted with 40 HCWs in 9 focus groups. The selected municipalities represented variations in municipality type and incidence rate of occupational disorders. Making it work in the frontline was identified as the core category explaining that the perceived work situation in home care work was the main concern but interacted with work-group socialising processes as well as with the communicability and derivability of the occupational disorder when defining and reporting occupational disorders. Complex problems could be reformulated and agreed within the workgroup to increase communicability. Described significances for reporting/non-reporting were related to financial compensation, to a part of organizational political game or to an existential uncertainty, i.e. questioning if it belonged to their chosen work and life. Our conclusion is that working situation and work group attitudes have importance for reporting of occupational disorders. To support work-related health for HCWs, integrating communication should be developed about work-related challenges in work situation, as well as about attitudes, culture and efficiency within work-group.

    The Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) have undergone substantial cultural and social changes due to increased migration from the 1970s onwards. While the Nordic region has become more multicultural in terms of demography, workforces and cultural practices, criticism of multicultural politics has increased. Despite different patterns of immigration in the Nordic countries, they all seem to share growing political tensions with regard to multiculturalism and migration. Many migrants have experiences of racism and discrimination (Eide & Nikunen, 2010:1). In all Nordic countries, right-wing conservative parties have strengthened their position. In Norway and Denmark, such parties have for some time been represented in the Parliament, and in Sweden, the Sweden Democrats came into the Parliament after the 2010 election. This party has on its agenda to reduce the costs for migration and dramatically change the national migration policy. They blame the government for being too permissive and generous. It is against this background the present report is written.

    Hösten 2010 sökte Linköpings universitet, projektet Samverkan, Integration och Kunskap, SIK-projektet, medel från Europeiska integrationsfonden till ett projekt dels med syfte att systematisera de erfarenheter och resultat som dragits av projekt inom ramen för fondens arbete, och dels erbjuda processtöd till projekten i olika former. Rapporten Dialogens paradoxer är ett led i detta arbete och bygger på data som insamlats i Integrationsfondens projektverksamhet och analyserats av SIK-projektet.

    Rapporten, Dialogens paradoxer, innehåller en bakgrundsteckning och problematisering av centrala begrepp i relation till interkulturell dialog men är framförallt en beskrivning av projekts erfarenheter av att arbeta med dialog som arbetsmetod. Det empiriska materialet i rapporten består av observationer och intervjuer från tio projekt som beviljats medel från Integrationsfonden. De deltagande projekten har arbetat med integrationsfrämjande åtgärder på olika sätt. Bland projekten återfinns de som haft dialog som huvudsakligt syfte, men även projekt som i sitt syfte angett att deras arbete bygger på andra angreppsätt. Vad dessa projekt har gemensamt är att interkulturell och eller interreligiös dialog, i någon form ändå återfinns hos alla projekt, oavsett om det är ett centralt angreppssätt eller inte. Därmed finns det i datamaterialet, exempel på dialog även om det inte är den åtgärd projektet har sökt medel för.

    Rapportens resultat inleds med en redovisning av målet för dialog som arbetsverktyg. Vidare diskuteras hinder och möjligheter för dialogarbetet. Analysen utmynnar i ett antal paradoxer som vi funnit som centrala för att förstå dialogens möjligheter och svårigheter.

    This case study applies women's empowerment and feminist theories to discuss the transport system's possible link with women empowerment and understand how a gender-responsive transport system based on women's complex needs would empower them and improve their status of health and well-being. The research area is two small urban in Sweden with less than 1500 populations. The present study investigates the local women's mobility behavior to discover their daily travel challenges. Moreover, determining whether the local transport project, including the train station's commencement, is gender-aware in the policymaking and implementation part and conscious about the gender-mainstreaming and gender equality policies. This research practices the qualitative method by employing semi-structured interviews with a small sample-group of women in the regions. The interpretation of data is being used as the theoretical knowledge approach. Besides, when the COVID-19 pandemic changed people's mobility behavior, they avoided using public transport for safety measurements and working from home. The research's last aim is to observe any change in people's mindset, behavior, and trust level in public transport. The result shows a clear connection between the transportation system and women's empowerment and their well-being. The study presents having gender-awareness perspectives, and raising gender consciousness is necessary if the ultimate aim is designing an equitable transport system to support women's empowerment. The research demonstrates that women still trust and prefer the public transport system and are ready to use it again after the COVID-19 and familiar situation.

    I denna studie undersöks hur mycket kunskap och kännedom elever i nionde klass har om naturvård och biologisk mångfald. Även hur stort intresse eleverna har om naturvård studeras. Undersökningen utförs med hjälp av grundad teori. Data samlades in i form av intervjuer, totalt intervjuades 27 elever från fem olika skolor i Halmstad kommun. Elevernas uttalanden graderades på en skala mellan 1-10. Med hjälp av intervjuer och graderingar kan sedan slutsatser dras. Huvudkategorin som identifierades indikerar att eleverna i studien har förmåga att se problem och utmaningar ur ett samhällsperspektiv, vilket är viktigt ur naturvårdssynpunkt då denna disciplin förutom biologiska även inkluderar sociala, ekonomiska och politiska aspekter. Användandet av svenska exempel på naturvård är något som de medverkande eleverna är positivt inställda till och denna kategori har den högsta generella graderingen. Eleverna är intresserade och ser också själva att ytterligare utbildning inom naturvård är viktigt och något som bör finnas med i NO-undervisningen i större utsträckning. Eleverna hade svårt att definiera begrepp som biologisk mångfald och förståelsen för begreppet var inte särskilt utbredd, detta pekar på att metoder bör tas fram som ökar förståelsen för biologisk mångfald och därigenom även naturvård. Studien ger en indikation om att ökad utbildning av allmänheten är behövd och att öka omfattningen av naturvård teoretiskt men även praktiskt i skolundervisningen skulle vara ett bra tillvägagångssätt för att uppnå detta.

    Abstract [en]

    In this chapter, we demonstrate how a design ethnographic approach to future algorithm-powered mobility solutions opens up possibilities to research social implications of automated decision making (ADM) from a situational perspective, by investigating the context of ADM rather than simply observing the technology itself and how it is used. The context of our discussion is one where the development of autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI) applications, in the service of transportation, has sparked a renewed research interest into shared mobility systems, and how these can respond to emerging challenges of rising traffic congestion and pollution levels. Our research addresses the gap between algorithm-based approaches to designing for optimizing, streamlining, and efficiency, the questions of how these systems and services are activated in people’s everyday life, and how they interfere with decision-making around traveling and shared mobility. We argue that to understand how these services and technologies will be adopted and implemented in society, research attention must be directed to people in real-life situations where this type of ADM operates.

    Abstract [en]

    Public research organizations respond to external pressures from national research evaluation systems, performance-based funding systems and university rankings by translating them into internal goals, rules and regulations and by developing organizational identities, profiles and missions. Organizational responses have primarily been studied at the central organizational level, and research on the steering of research has primarily focused on the impacts of performance-based funding systems. However, research evaluation exercises may also have a formative impact, especially below the central organizational level. This paper uses a case study of a research unit of a biomedical research school in the Netherlands to explore the organizational response to a relatively critical external assessment report. It shows that the participation in the Dutch research evaluation cycle legitimated the formation of a new organizational identity for the research unit, which functions as a frame that suggests to staff members a new interpretation of the type of research that is at the core of what the research unit does. We identify three additional steering mechanisms that support the enactment of the organizational identity: steering by resource allocation, by suggesting and by re-organizing. We, furthermore, explore the epistemic effects – the direction and conduct of research – of the organizational response, through interview data in combination with a bibliometric analysis. © 2023, The Author(s).
