Elevers perspektiv på mobbning och att arbeta förebyggande med mobbning2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mobbning från ett infrånperspektiv2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

According to several studies, it is difficult for highly educated immigrants to find a job that match their education. A large number of them are forced to work in low-skilled jobs to cope with their daily lives. In this study, I will examine highly educated immigrants experience of their situation in the Swedish labor market. The study aims to examine the obstacles and opportunities that highly educated immigrants face in the labor market. The study is based on internal opinions where personal experiences and reflections of different participants were analyzed. The focus of the study is how six educated immigrants describe their situation in the Swedish labor market. This paperaims to increase knowledge about highly educated immigrants' conditions, expectations, obstacles and opportunities in the Swedish labor market. The results of the interviews with the participants were analyzed using key concepts from the two sociologists Erving Goffman and Pierre Bourdieu. The results show that the lack of a valuable social network, loss of symbolic and cultural capital that the participants had in their home country, plus the various demands from the employer, which is a major focus on the Swedish language, makes it difficult for academic immigrants to find a qualified job. respond to their education.

Kollektivavtalets roll på arbetsmarknaden: - En kvalitativ studie om medvetenhet, kommunikation och samverkan i förhållande till den svenska modellen2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze if the parties of the labor market, the trade unions, employers and employees, consider the collective agreement as encouraging for their cooperation. The purpose is also to examine how the actors experience the employee's awareness regarding rights, obligations and shaping of the collective agreement. Previous research regarding; the collective agreement, the Swedish model, communication and cooperation were fundamental to the empirical material in the study. These concepts, as well as the neoclassical perspective, were used to process the collected data.

The empirical data in the study was collected with the help of a qualitative method, in the form of semi-structured interviews. The interviews were carried out with the help of nine respondents with different roles in the labor market: two trade unions, two employers' and five employees’. The results show that the collective agreement, most of the time, promotes cooperation between the actors on the labor market. It also shows that the employees’ awareness regarding the collective agreement is relatively low.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study takes its premise in an earlier survey amongst persons working in a knowledge based company during the fall of 2013. That survey showed that one of the workgroups (the activity developers) perceived that the work interfered with their free time. That is the reason a study was done with the purpose of acquiring knowledge by interviewing activity developers about the phenomena, in which the individuals experience difficulties with disconnecting themselves from work in their free time.

This study aimed to acquire knowledge about the underlying factors relating to this phenomena. The questions that form the basis of this study are; what are the causes that negatively impact the participant’s free time? Could it be related to organizational problems? How could an organization limit this impact?

The result indicated that all participants have what we refer to as unregulated work, based in four dimensions; time, execution, workplace, and collaboration. According to the study it is clear that the participants feel that there is a lack of support in their work; experience a low degree of social support in the workplace, and it that clear goals are lacking. Management of expectations, is also seen as a contributing factor. The study concludes that the organization should invest more in education, teambuilding and work towards defining goals and tasks in order to reduce the impact on the participants and their free time.

"Kul att komma med idéer när någon lyssnar": En kvalitativ studie om hur LSS-personal upplever inflytande och bemötande i deras dagliga arbete2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Advertising and the role of gender: A study of Sweden,France and Spain magazine advertisements2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The gender portrayals study aims to understanding how the roles of men and women are portrayed in magazine advertisements. This has been an issue investigated over the past decades as companies try to achieve a higher level of sales of their products and services and the gender issue influences in how this companies plan one advertising program or another. However, there is a debate among authors: some of them believe that advertising reflects what is already on society and others express that advertisers use the most convenient reality to sell their products. Thus, it makes us wonder what is the actual truth behind this debate. This thesis tries to answer the question of how men and women are portrayed in advertising campaigns. There are several studies on gender portrayals across countries but none that compares France, Spain and Sweden. This thesis tries to fill this gap.

The study is conducted following Hofstede framework that classifies countries whether masculine or feminine, and is completed by analyzing the data gathered from four magazines of these three countries. We classified this data following Courtney and Lockeretz classification scheme and analyzed the data obtained with theories of some other authors.

The results of this thesis show that males were dominant among working roles while females were in non-working roles. The findings might not add a huge contribution to this field of study but may be used as guiding tool for further research.

Implementeringsfaktorer i skolans värld: En kvalitativ studie om de bakomliggande faktorerna till en lyckad implementering av en pedagogisk modell för lärare2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Todays society is characterized by a constant change and development, which requires the school to develop at the same rate as the rest of society. The school should be equivalent to everyone. How can this be insured if we do not know which factors that affect the implementation of educational models? By ensuring the factors that affect implementation, better results can be achieved. This makes it more likely that the new educational model is used and becomes part of the everyday work. To make an implementation possible, a change work is carried out in the organization.

We have conducted a qualitative study whose purpose is to study which factors teachers experience may affect the implementation of a new educational model in school. The survey has been conducted at three schools in a town in Sweden. The form of the interview has been semi-structured, two of which have been held in groups and one individual. Through the interviews we have acquired empirical evidence for our study.

The result show that there are many different factors that affects, often in combination with each other, how well an implementation results in. The factors that are significant and have been made visible in our survey are the following: Relevance, attitude, advantageous, easy-to-use, customizable, coaching, support, time, participation, follow-up systems, clear results, culture and communication.

An active chain process of self-leadership: Dynamically practising self-leading strategies for sustainability2022Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Title: An active chain process of self-leadership: Dynamically practising self-leading strategies for sustainability.

Keywords: Active and dynamic, Chain process of self-leadership, Self-leadership strategies

Background: Sustainability is important and of current interest, requiring all organisations to be well-functioning, committed to sustainability and create strategic decisions for their long-term sustainability. Organisations thence benefit from training the employees into self-leaders, as it results in beneficial outcomes that lead to greatness within organisations, and hence society at large.

Research question: Why do individuals succeed in maintaining and practising an active chain process of self-leadership?

Purpose: This study aims to understand why individuals sustain maintaining an active chain process of self-leadership by dynamically practising self-leadership strategies, where they continue to be self-aware, manage and lead themselves, practice self-leadership strategies, attain self-efficacy and achieve beneficial outputs that in extension contribute to a more efficient and long-term sustainable society. To better understand what activates the chain process of self-leadership and creates the dynamic, the authors have developed a summarising model (see model 5.1 in chapter 5).

Method: The study is of qualitative character with an abductive research approach, where the empirical data have been collected through semi-structured interviews and a collective case study design with ten informants who practise self-leadership, and then analysed by the Gioia method.

Findings: The chain process of self-leadership is holistic and what maintains it active are feelings of well-being, competence, and efficacy, as well as succeeding, contributing to a greater good and seeing things in a greater context. Of significance is to be reminded and followed up regularly.

Researching corporate social responsibility in developing-countries context: A systematic review of the literature2018In: International Journal of Law and Management, ISSN 1754-243X, E-ISSN 1754-2448, Vol. 60, no 2, p. 284-310Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This paper aims to present a systematic review of scholarly articles focused on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in developing countries and published during the period 2004 to 2014 in international journals.

Design/methodology/approach: This paper applied a bibliometric analysis to 101 articles on CSR research focused on developing countries.

Findings: The study confirms that the most prevalent CSR themes addressed in journals have been social issues, followed by environmental issues in a distant second, with ethics-related issues receiving the least attention. Also, as CSR research in developing countries constitutes an emerging stream of literature, an overwhelming dominance of empirical (qualitative) papers aimed at exploring and/or seeking interpretations to CSR motivations have been confirmed.

Research limitations/implications: An important limitation of this study is in relation to the methods applied. In the first place, this review is based on two electronic databases: ABI/INFORM Global (ProQuest) and Web of Science Core Collection: Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED). This means that research published in international journals that are not included in either of these databases will be omitted.

Practical implications: This review provides useful guidance for future CSR research focused on developing countries thereby providing a foundation for future research in this stream of CSR research.

Social implications: The findings of this study suggest that much CSR knowledge in developing countries reflects the unique social issues that call for companies to adopt different CSR interventions when operating in developing countries.

Originality/value: Although this paper is not the first to systematically review CSR research, but it is one of the initial attempts, to the best of the knowledge, to systematically review the state of CSR knowledge in the context of developing countries.

Studenters upplevelser av en god pskykosocial arbetsmiljö: En kvalitativ studie2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Most occupational studies in school are directed to staff or to the younger ages, and therefore it is missing knowledge of young adults' perceived learning environment. The aim of this study was to describe how college students experience a good psychosocial work environment. To answer this purpose a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews was chosen and a qualitative contentanlysis. The selection of informants was done through mass e-mails in which interested students were asked to contact the researcher. Age range of the 10 respondents was 20-41 years, and four of the five sections of the chosen university in southern Sweden were represented. The result is presented in three categories Security and trust, Control in the study situation and Supportive study environment. The initial period of the studies is important for the continued well-being. Availability to social support is important, both from classmates, lecturers and from family. The students' ability and knowledge of influencing their situation at the school is low. Informants feel demands in their studies from themselves, lecturers and other people in the surroundings. A health education in Top Shape - governing and communication strategies in the edutainment series of Top Shape2013In: International Journal of E-Health and Medical Communications (IJEHMC), ISSN 1947-315X, E-ISSN 1947-3168, no 2, p. 22-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Contemporary society is often described as a “learning society”, in which citizens are educated to reflect on and evaluate their well- being and lifestyles. In school, this is done through assessments: ratings and evaluations, in working life through staff appraisals and health evaluations, and in everyday life, media is used for self-assessments. Focus in this article is on the later. Mass media has become an increasingly common tool to produce and promote knowledge about health and lifestyle. In various edutainment programs experts and coaches supports participants to improve their lives in one way or another. In this article I will focus on the series “Toppform” (Top shape) broadcasted on Swedish television in 2008. Top Shape is one of the health and lifestyle TV- series that use coordinated communication channels to interact with its viewers. Parallel with the program being broadcasted on television, it is also represented with material on the Internet. This study focuses on the material that is represented on the website of the TV-series, which also contains material used for teaching in school settings. By that, the material constitutes an interesting encounter between entertainment, school education and public health education and is therefore fruitful to study from a perspective of health communication. I adopt a critical discourse analytic approach, in which power relations and the constitution of social practices are in focus.

Governmentality as a genealogical toolbox in historical analysis2013In: European Education: Issues and Studies, ISSN 1056-4934, E-ISSN 1944-7086, Vol. 45, no 4, p. 61-74Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to show how governmentality may be used to analyze historical events and discourses, and how this historical analysis can be used as a perspective to problematize contemporary discourses. The example used in this article is from my research on life-extension handbooks published in Sweden 1700-1930, and by this I stress handbooks as a noninstitutional educative arena. I am advocating governmentality as a toolbox to analyze how various forms of power operate and how different levels of power integrate and conflict in this arena. In doing so, I recommend governmentality as a critical and empirical approach to analyze various forms of power relations and governance. I exemplify the flexibility of the toolbox by using genealogy and governmentality in combination with linguistic tools from Critical Discourse Analysis and Norman Fairclough. In this way, I want to stress the critical gaze and the importance of situation in time and space by arguing for greater respect for the variants of the concepts of genealogy and governmentality. © 2013 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Konsten att leva länge: föreställningar om livets förlängning i handböcker 1700-19302007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Old bastard – rebellion against or a repetition of negative age codes?

In contemporary media and scientific contexts, it has become increasingly popular to launch today’s elderly as different from previous generations of older people, especially emphasized is that today’s elderly will have more attitude and set higher demands on society. The TVseries Pensionärsjävlar is based on this idea of today’s and tomorrow’s elderly as different and more rebellious than previous generations. The purpose of this article is to analyze and discuss how age and age codes are used as a prerequisite for, but also are challenged in the series. The result shows that chronological age is almost absent in the series, instead age coding is performed by physical attributes and verbal acts. Most common attributes are those connected to decreased functionality, such as walker, wheelchair, walking stick etcetera. The most common taboo joked about is sexuality, and other common themes are decreased functionality, child/youth- like behavior and traffic. In the article I discuss how these themes and attributes are negotiated in relation to age.

    Abstract [en]

In contemporary media and scientific contexts, it has become increasingly popular to launch today's elderly as different from previous generations of older people, especially emphasized is that today's elderly will have more attitude and set higher demands on society. The TV- series “Pensionärsjävlar” (Senior bastards) is based on this idea of today's and tomorrow's elderly as different and more rebellious than previous generations. The purpose of this presentation is to analyze and discuss how age and age codes are used as a prerequisite for, but also are challenged in the series. The result builds on a study of the Swedish TV-series Senior bastards that was broadcasted in 2010. The theoretical perspective implies age as a social construction of performativity and interaction. The result shows that chronological age is almost absent in the series, instead age coding is performed by physical attributes and verbal acts. Most common attributes are those connected to decreased functionality, such as walker, wheelchair, walking stick etcetera. The most common taboo joked about is sexuality, and other common themes are decreased functionality, child/youth like behavior and traffic. In the presentation I discuss how these themes and attributes are negotiated in relation to positive and negative age codes. © Irish Gerontological Society, 2015

Pensioneer camps - about doing age and making difference2015In: IAGG-ER 8th Congress Dublin 2015 - Unlocking the Demographic Dividend: Congress Abstracts, The Irish Gerontological Society , 2015, Vol. 6, p. 337-337Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

"Pensioneer camps", summer camps aimed at older people, has for some years been established in several locations in Sweden. What unites the camps is the claimed positive effect they have for older people's health and quality of life. The stay is said to break isolation and lead to new habits and friendships that endure. This multidisciplinary study focuses on the phenomenon "Pensioneer camp" with the overall aim to study its health and life enhancing potential. Pensioneer camps are examined from a structural cultural-historical perspective focusing on the discourses in action, from an ethnographic perspective, focusing on identity construction and performance of age and from an activity perspective, focusing on quality of life and health in everyday life before and after the camp stay. Key issues are: What impact have older or more general discourses of "summer camp" on the activities? What age coded practices are made possible and how is age performed? How is the camp experienced by the elderly and it can be said to have any long-lasting impact in their lives after their stay? By studying both the individual, cultural and organizational aspects in relation to Pensioneer camps it enables both in- depth scientific knowledge of older people's quality of life and health in general, and, recommendations for future local investment in Pensioneer camps in terms of possibilities and limitations. © Irish Gerontological Society, 2015

Employer attitudes toward hiring persons with disabilities: A vignette study in Sweden2015In: Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, ISSN 1052-2263, E-ISSN 1878-6316, Vol. 43, no 1, p. 41-50Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Individuals with disabilities are often far removed from the labour market and research shows that employers’ negative attitudes toward persons with disabilities create a barrier to attaining employment. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate Swedish employers’ experiences and attitudes toward hiring persons with various disabilities. METHODS: A vignette method with accompanying questions was used. A total of 212 employers, who were actively seeking to hire, were recruited via an online employment site and participated in the study. RESULTS: The results indicated that there is some interest for employers to hire persons with disabilities and that this depended on the type of disability a person has. Other results demonstrated that previous experience of employing persons with disabilities was linked to greater interest in hiring, that employers had greater interest to hire than they thought other employers had, and that openness about the disability was deemed as an important factor in the hiring process. CONCLUSION: The novelty of this study is its use of a vignette design to investigate employers’ attitudes in Sweden. Moreover, the results are much in line with international research. This contributes to knowledge and development of increasing employment for persons with disabilities. © 2015 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

The critical role of informed political direction for advancing technology: The case of Swedish marine energy2017In: Energy Policy, ISSN 0301-4215, E-ISSN 1873-6777, Vol. 101, p. 52-64Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Marine energy technologies can contribute to meeting sustainability challenges, but they are still immature and dependent on public support. This paper employs the Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) framework to analyze the development and diffusion of Swedish marine energy up until 2014. While there were promising device developers, relevant industrial capabilities, and world-class research, the system suffered from weaknesses in several important innovation processes. Finally, the analysis identifies the lack of informed political direction as a critical blocking factor and highlights its connection to domestic market potential. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which children's physical activity during school  hours  are  met  in  relation  to  today’s  health  recommendations.  This  study  was  a quantitative  research  method  through  study  with  pedometers  and  observation.  The  main instrument was pedometers which the pupils wore during one day at school. The study group consisted of 74 students, made up of 36 boys and 38 girls from the 4th grade in four schools in  southern Sweden. The  results demonstrate  that  the boys were physical active 47-50 % of what  they should and  the girls 33-36 % of what  they should according  to recommendations. The boys  took about 3000 more  steps  than  the girls.  In our  study only one boy  reached  the recommended  amount  of  steps  per  day,  but  no  girl  did. The  conclusion  is  that  the  pupils  are  inactive  during  their  time  in  school.    There  are differences  in  boys'  and  girls'  physical  activity,  both  within  each  school  and  between  the schools. The observation showed that the girls stand still more than the boys during break and the girls are generally less active than the boys at all four schools.

From closet-fill to toxic sublime: The aesthetics of e-waste2019In: 18th Annual STS Conference Graz 2019: Book of Abstracts, 2019, p. 58-59Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Electronic waste (e-waste) has a peculiar relation to space. It is well-documented how a large part of discarded electronic devices still remain in people’s homes, instead of reaching the recycling centres. This is especially true with digital media and communication technologies such as computers and mobile phones (ironically the devices with the shortest life cycles). This phenomenon has been described by the term “closet-fill” (as opposed to land-fill). However, representations of electronic waste in public discourse such as news reports, seldom focus on this aspect. Instead, they tend to portray e-waste dumping sites as strange, almost alien spaces. Sublime imagery invites the viewer to a contemplation over Western consumerism in a fashion recognizable from visual arts. Consequently, imagery of electronic waste has also become an object of aesthetic value in the works of renowned visual artists such as Pieter Hugo and David LaChapelle, who have gained recognition because of this inclusion of imagery of e-waste in their photographic art. The aim of this paper is to address these aesthetic qualities of electronic waste. The purpose is to contribute to the expanding literature on media materialities and waste with a conceptual understanding of manifestations of electronic waste in popular discourse. The paper draws on theories on media aesthetics, environmental communication and waste management to build an analytic framework that explores the benefits and limitations of presenting electronic waste as an aesthetic object. Empirically it engages in analyses of visual representations of electronic waste. The paper addresses the tension between aesthetic contemplation/appreciation, and critical information. It could be argued that if e-waste is to be presented and understood as an urgent topic, there might be a problem if it is portrayed as something strange, exotic or even beautiful. The concept ”toxic sublime” has been used in analyses of visual representations of pollution, and Peeples (2011: 383) argues that this construction of the toxic as sublime comes with a risk: “It may predispose people to look for toxins in the extraordinary, as opposed to on the shelves of their garages”. It could be argued that e-waste faces a similar problem. The focus on the sublime strangeness of e-waste “dumping sites” is an ineffective way of creating proximity and urgency to the e-waste problem, something that takes place somewhere else than in our homes. LeBel (2015) argues that e-waste aesthetics fails to address the temporal dimension of waste (e.g. planned obsolescence, toxicity). This paper intends to add to that argument by highlighting the tension between the closet-fill and the toxic sublime

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aims to investigate how the employees in the munipacility of Halmstad practice the vision - Halmstad 2020 and its value foundations in their working process. We have applied theories about communication, value-based and expressive leadership, leadership in public organizations and Human Resource Management. In total, we performed two interviews with informants, and ten interviews within two different administrations in the munipacility. We have also taken note of various documents that has been the basis of our study. The results indicated that several of the respondents experienced the vision as abstract and vague. It also appeared that communication about the vision was insufficient in the two administrations. Further, the results also indicated that leadership is an important matter in the working process towards a vision. Our conclusion is that the work towards a vision is covered by good communication, a value-based/expressive leadership and that a practice of human resources management are integrated in to the organizations overall vision.

Effects of a Mobile Phone-based Mindfulness Intervention for Teachers, and how Mindfulness Trait Correlates with Stress, Wellbeing, Burnout, and Compassion2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Objectives The aim of the study was to examine effects of mindfulness on stress, wellbeing, compassion and burnout, conducting a brief mobile phone-based mindfulness intervention on teachers. Methods Fifty-five teachers from private and public schools, including pre-school, elementary school, middleschool, secondary- and upper secondary school and adult education school was recruited. 25 teachers completed pre- and post-test (mindfulness, N=20, relaxation, N=5). High dropouts in control led to exclusion of this group in pre- to posttest analysis. The mindfulness treatment comprised of ten minutes of mindfulness meditation for ten sessions at a time and place convenient to the teacher. Results Findings showed that the mindfulness group significantly improved mindfulness trait, and wellbeing, a trend of increased compassion was also found. Overall stress, and teacher-specific stress decreased significantly in the mindfulness group. Burnout showed no significant differences. Correlation tests including all teachers at pre-test showed that high mindfulness trait was associated with higher compassion, wellbeing, and lower levels of stress and burnout. At post-test, high mindfulness trait was associated with higher compassion, wellbeing, and lower levels of burnout and stress, however, not teacher-specific stress. Increases in mindfulness trait from pre- to posttest was related to improvements in all five health outcomes. Conclusions This mobile phone-based mindfulness intervention showed significant improvements on several health outcomes on teachers. Findings indicate that mindfulness trait may explain the change in health outcomes. The current study argues for the need of considering teacher-specific context in digital interventions to improve adherence and preventing dropouts.

Kravprofilens roll vid rekrytering: En kvalitativ studie av en rekryteringsprocess med fokus på kravprofilen2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this study has been to examine how a recruiting process may work in a highly skilled industry and how the involved Human Resources (HR) personnel describe it. Of particular focus was how the competence profile was used throughout the recruiting process. To meet this objective, two research questions were developed: How may a recruiting process work? How may the competence profile be used during a recruiting process and what obstacles and opportunities may consequently present themselves.

The study was conducted utilizing the qualitative method. The results are based on seven semi-structured interviews conducted at an HR department at a highly skilled organization. We have used established theory about the recruiting process, competence profile, about decision-making and the various perspectives on recruiting.

The results show that the recruiting process generally is a formalized process and contains pre-defined steps and various selection methods. In the end, the decision is made based on a comprehensive and all-inclusive review of the applicant. The study also shows that the competence profile is considered valuable, although not always of a top priority. Moreover, the study shows that the competence profile enables the identification of the recruiting need, facilitates matching of applicants, and is used to support decisions throughout the process. Noted obstacles were time constraints, an already biased view due to the previous employee which held the position, and that a favorite candidate existed early on in the process.

Skyddande pojkar och omtänksamma flickor?: En språklig studie av personbeskrivande ord i barnböcker ur ett genusperspektiv.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
