    Abstract [en]

“Who takes care of the manager?”An exploratory study of manager´s perceived organizational and social work environment.

The study aims to create a deeper understanding of managers' experiences, of their organizational and social work environment. Furthermore, the study aims to examine managers' perceptions of health factors that they perceive as health-promoting. The main question of this study is; “How do managers experience their organizational and social work environment?”. As previous research has often focused on preventive factors, this study focuses on a health-promoting perspective. Which refers to the study's second question; "What health factors do managers perceive as health-promoting?". The study applies a qualitative method through semi-structured interviews for the collection of empirical material. The sample consists of eight first-line and middle managers in various industries. The study has an exploratory focus in order to create a basis for further research.

The results of the study show that recovery, communication, colleagues, social relationships, clear roles, goals and tasks are perceived as important organizational and social aspects in the manager's own work environment. The results also show that perceived health factors are flexibility in working hours, being heard, support from colleagues, functioning social relationships and recovery by adapting their meetings.

Keywords: Organizational and social work environment, management, health factors, health promotion.

En socialpsykologisk studie om organisationsvisionens betydelse för sociala relationer i arbetsvardagen2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we have considered the impact the organization`s implementation of its vision of the psychosocial work enviroment has been for the relations between the employees. We have primarily relied on a hermeneutic approach to understand our empirical data, and when we have interpreted and made a socialpsycological analysis on our collected empirical data. We have used Smith´s Institutional Ethnography, Sheff`s Social bonds and Asplund`s theory of Social responsivity. To collect the empirical data we have combined quantitative and qualtitative methods and a textanalysis at a visiondocument in the aim of capture both the depht and the breadth of our chosen fields of study. The results we have found shows that the psycosocial work environment within the organization can be seen as interplay between individual and enviroment and between individuals as well and that this interaction is influenced by the organizational culture that is created by the organization`s political vision

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with youth coaches and their work with young people at various youth venues in areas that the police believe are vulnerable areas in Halmstad and Växjö. The purpose of this study is to see the importance of youth coaches for young people and how they shape them into good citizens. Young people visit different youth venues to find a community and an adult they can talk to. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. The results show that youth coaches influence young people and many young people see coaches as role models. This opportunity arises from the relationship created between a youth and a coach. The results also show that this relationship is important for many young people as some of them can go for a whole day without talking to any adult. When the coaches choose to listen to young people individually and invite them to conversations a confidence and trust is created that gives the coaches the opportunity to influence the young people's day to day life.

En studie av två socioekonomiska områden i Landskrona: Borstahusen & Karlslund2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study investigates youth perception of juvenile delinquency in Landskrona utilising a research sample from the local districts Borstahusen and Karlslund. The research sample was split between these socio-economic areas to provide an in-depth understanding of perception variances, their root cause, and the occurrence of prejudice against individuals from Karlslund as a direct result of negative associations with the district. To ensure a quality-focused data collection process a qualitative interview method was used, these interviews were recorded and then transcribed to reveal various similarities and differences throughout the sample. A key conclusion from this sample found that youth perception of juvenile delinquency remains relatively comparable, whereas their perception of the geographic location of these issues differs vastly. This research also concluded high levels of prejudice against individuals from the Karlslund province, immediately labelling them criminals without any further consideration. This research utilised the following theories and concepts to analyse the data; ‘the established and the outsiders’, ‘labelling theory’, and ‘subcultures’

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how second generation immigrants perceive their belonging and integration into Swedish society and their belongings to the area in which they live in. The study has a qualitative approach and semistructured interviews have been conducted. The selection consisted of a snowball survey with eight Swedish-born informants between the ages of eighteen and thirty whose parents were born outside of Europe. A thematic analysis was conducted and showed that the majority of informant experienced stigmatization and exclusion, partly because of that they live in certain residential areas which affect the identity of the informants design and social ties. This is supported by earlier research which showed that people living with dual ethnicities live with a constant struggle to be accepted among the majority group in the Swedish society, and this struggle has led to the people in the study experiencing exclusion. The empirical material was analyzed using the following theories: Richard Jenkins theory of social identity, Ervin Goffmans theory about stigma and Scheffs theory of shame and pride.

En god styrning: -En kvalitativ studie kring en fotbollstränares roll för att skapa resultat och samtidigt ha ett välmående lag2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Lack of workers and a shrinking welfare state have increased the focus on individuals who are excluded from the labor market as well as social enterprises. In this hermeneutic study, based on interviews with officials working towards these groups, we investigate how officials perceive their discretion and role towards clients. To be able to do their job they need discretion which is in line with Michael Lipsky's theory on street-level bureaucrats (Lipsky 2010).

Social enterprises are described as needed to solve shortcomings in the labor market, but also problematic, as the social entrepreneurs could be lacking skills, as both clients and social entrepreneurs have a background of failed schooling due to disabilities and socio-economic causes. Bourdieu’s concept of doxa is applied to understand how failed schooling lead to shortcomings in navigating society and how officials compensate for this by taking on different roles.

The paradox of the social enterprises is analyzed with a theory on pre-paradigmatic fields and isomorphism which brings a pressure for organizations to conform to gain legitimacy and access to resources. More knowledge on the role the officials can play to prevent exclusion from the labor market could enable resources to be more effectively distributed within the welfare system.

Ageing people with intellectual disabilities and the association between frailty factors and social care: A Swedish national register study2022In: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1744-6295, E-ISSN 1744-6309, Vol. 26, no 4, p. 900-918Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe the social care provided for different age groups of people with intellectual disability, 55 years or above, and to investigate the association between such care and frailty factors for those with diagnosed level of intellectual disabilities. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were used. Commonest forms of social care among the 7936 people were Residential care, Daily activities and Contact person. Home help and Security alarm increased with age. The frailty factors significantly associated with increased social care were age, polypharmacy and severe levels of intellectual disabilities. Persons most likely to be in residential care were in the age group 65–79 with polypharmacy and severe disability. The results indicate a need for further research of how frailty factors are considered in social care and longstanding medication, especially then severe intellectual disability hinders communication. A national strategic plan for preventive interventions should be developed to ensure the best possible healthy ageing. © The Author(s) 2021.

Det är ansvar och frihet: En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares upplevelser av sitt handlingsutrymme2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social Workers work in the Social Services Addiction Unit is challenged to meet the client's needs while responding to the organization's resources. This is due to insufficient resources placed on abuse because the target group is not a priority. Therefore, it is important that social workers have a margin of action to make thoughtful actions in relation to both parties. The purpose of the essay is to investigate and analyze the factors that social workers perceive may affect the social investigative work and how social workers experience power in the investigative work with adult clients who have ongoing abuse problems. The purpose is expressed in issues that take into account what opportunities and limitations social workers experience in the law investigation work and how they experience the exercise of power in relation to the client in investigation according to the law.

The study is based on 7 qualitative semi structured interviews with social workers who work with investigations with substance abusers in Halland and Skåne County. The material was analyzed using Lipsky's concept discretion and Foucault's power theory. The results show that missions, laws and guidelines, resources, customer attitude and social workers' subjectivity are regarded by social security as both the possibilities and limitations in the SoL investigation. In addition, the social workers find that they have power in relation to the client with the help of knowledge about the subject, but they also have the ambition to lift the client that leads to a relational power. Social workers also act in an uncertainty where the social workers' scope for action, including factors that enable and limit the investigative work is important for the work in the social field.

Kriminalitetens drivkrafter: En kvalitativ studie om före detta kriminellas uppfattningar och upplevelser av kriminalitetens drivkrafter2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this C-thesis I have studied criminality in regard of motivations behind, conserving and relating to a criminal lifestyle. Youngsters are increasingly getting involved in brutal criminality and I reckoned it important to study why youngsters begins to commit crimes and gets engaged in criminality. There is no specific answer to why individuals begin to commit crimes in the research on the field, but Bergström (2012) has presented motivations to criminality and Becker (1991) presents a model of the development of “deviant” carers. In the thesis I have categorized the motivations regarding those behind, conserving and relating to a criminal lifestyle, and interpreted them with the notions and experiences of ex. criminals. The method of the thesis is qualitative, and I have interviewed ex. criminals which are members of the association KRIS, Criminals Revanche in Society. Four interviews were conducted with respondents who were below the age of 35. I concluded the social heritage primary regarding family circumstances, having criminals in the close environment in the family and neighbourhood are the motivations which drove them to criminality. All of them regards themselves as responsible for starting to commit to crimes instead of choosing a different path in life. The schooling has been problematic for all of them and they have all either not received or have not been able to receive the support they have needed in school. Safe family circumstances and stable schooling are 2 of the most important protective factors which can discourage criminality. All of them have positive experiences regarding support of social services and through institutions. Yet the fellowship with other criminals, the excitement in committing crimes and financial gains instead of growing up in the realm of protective factors, have given them pre-conditions to stay criminal. Furthermore, all of them had drug or alcohol addictions that has contributed to their criminality and they have felt it hard to get in to work.

"Det handlar om okunskap om hur det är att vara funktionshindrad": En kvalitativ studie om samhällets bemötande gentemot personer med synliga fysiska funktionsnedsättningar.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Olika verkligheter: En studie om föräldrars uppfattning om genus2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

With heritability methodology researchers using twin studies, and during recent year also DNA studies, have claimed that heredity plays a crucial role in explaining social outcomes. Explaining what causes social outcomes is a strive to explain how reality is constituted, and is thus an ontological question. The purpose of this article is to examine the unspoken ontological assumptions in heritability studies from a critical realistic perspective. First I’ll explain the basics of the heritability methodology, the twin methodology and DNA studies that measure heritability, then I’ll describe the previous criticism of these studies. Thereafter I’ll argue that the heritability studies do not examine the actual causes of social events, but rather that the measures are driven by other underlying mechanisms, which thus are the ones possessing the generative power to influence social outcomes. Against this background, I argue that the studies commit the fallacy of misplaced concreteness and the epistemic fallacy. In conclusion, I argue that concrete social phenomena should be understood as an interplay between different generative mechanisms.

Det otrygga arbetslivet i Sverige: Dess framväxt och konsekvenser2022 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

© 2022 Studentlitteratur

Have low-paid jobs increased in the Swedish labor market? Defining low pay in the context of the Nordic model2023In: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, E-ISSN 1461-7099Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Can the Nordic wage-setting model, where social partners decide wages through collective agreements, counteract a growing low-paid sector? This article tests four definitions of low-paid jobs to analyze whether this sector has grown for the period 2005–2020 in Sweden. Despite policy changes pointing towards growth, all definitions show a slight decrease in low-paid jobs over time. The authors argue that the industrial relations system, with the aim of keeping the industry wage increases in check to aid export competitiveness, also sets a uniform level wage that limits low-paid jobs. It is also found that low pay in the Swedish setting is partly a result of working less than full-time or having unstable employment, and service workers and those with low education are becoming increasingly common in this position.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to, based on the question "How do foreign-born home caregivers experience the relationships with clients, colleagues and management in a conurbation in Central Sweden?" highlight possible challenges that staff face in their profession and how their foreign background affects interactions with clients, managers and colleagues.. The study is based on eight qualitative interviews with employees in home care in a small municipality in central Sweden. The results show that foreign-born home caregivers are greatly affected by their foreign background in their profession. They have experienced discrimination at work and feel pressure to perform better than their Swedish colleagues to be accepted and to prove their competence. In the analysis, intersectionality theory is used to analyze discrimination and how class and status factors affect interactions between clients, colleagues, and managers. Arlie Hochschild's theory of emotional labor is used to understand how caregivers handle and act in situations where they are subjected to discrimination. Finally, Thomas Scheff's concept of social bonds is applied to understand why home caregivers act as they do.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate from an administrator perspective how authorities integrate newly arrived to the Swedish labor market. The results are analyzed and understood by two theories, theory about Intersectionality and Goodman theory. The empirical material is based on seven interviews with people who are employed in the public sector and who are working with establishment on the labor market among newly arrived individuals. The previous research is based on conditions and obstacles that helps newly arrived people on their way to establishment on the Swedish labor market. A main result in the study is that the respondents are experiencing that the group newly arrived have a hard time to integrate at the Swedish labor market. They lift women, mainly women born outside of Europe as a group that has a harder time to integrate on the labor market than other newly arrived and that they need particularly targeted efforts. This is explained by high demands on the Swedish language, competence and education which this group is not able to make. The result also shows that a big part of the newly arrived individuals are dependent off support from the authorities while they at the same time are being referred to steer their own establishment process towards self-sufficiency. The role of the individuals working at the authorities is not considered to be intended to offer individual support for newly arrived people. This is judged to have a negative impact on weak groups and they tend to end up in long term unemployment without customized efforts. The study finally shows that the respondents have a low trust for the short-term investments that are being made to ensure that the investments create a permanent solution for newly arrived at the labor market. This is confirmed by that there is a chain of support that is prepositioned related to the labor market for individuals that extend over a long period of time, where the ambition seems to be primarily to employ a big group of individuals rather than consider each individual.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was based on immigrants´ own experiences to investigate what impact the Introductory course had on the immigrants´ establishment in the labor market.

We performed a qualitative investigation where we performed eight semi-structured interviews with immigrants who lived in Sweden for 10-15 years. This was implemented in order to create a deeper understanding of what could have had an impact on the immigrants’ establishment in the labor market through the introduction course.

The outcome of this study showed that the immigrants’ biggest obstacle to establish themselves in the labor market was the language. It has been noted that the language has been of great importance in order to significantly lead to establishment in the labor market. Additionally, the introductory course has had a great significance on the respondents in the study since they got to learn the Swedish language through the introductory course. Whereas, another crucial factor that the immigrants were lacking in is the social contact network. This factor has made the establishment of the labor market all the more difficult.

Bildningspraxis och didaktisk reflexivitet som anti-skolkultur2023In: Pedagogisk forskning i Sverige, ISSN 1401-6788, E-ISSN 2001-3345Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Pathways to Aesthetic Education in a World of Profitability2022In: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research, ISSN 1103-3088, E-ISSN 1741-3222, Vol. 30, no 5, p. 490-510Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The cultural sector has become an important part of the ‘new economy’ and has affected artistic practices as well as the road to becoming an artist. By discussing two female students’ paths to aesthetic education, the article sheds light on some of the sociopolitical and economic conditions that students in transition between elementary and upper secondary school in Sweden encounter when entering aesthetic education with musical aspirations. The results give insight into the ways in which young people reason when entering a precarious sector that demands a high amount of personal investment and planning. It also shows the ways in which social class still plays a pivotal role in the choice of and reflection on educational goals. Further, the article discusses how creative desires can transcend the economic instrumental expectations that surround the world in which the students live. Thus, it provides a contemporary understanding of how young people navigate a world of profitability.

Considerations of the concept of infant health: a literature review2006In: Early Child Development and Care, ISSN 0300-4430, E-ISSN 1476-8275, Vol. 176, no 6, p. 575-589Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examined a wide range of literature in order to describe factors associated with the concept of infant health. The design of the study is a literature review examining 21 research studies, written in the English language. The study explored which factors were found to exert an influence on the concept of infant health. The result showed that the concept infant health is dependent on many factors but what seems to exert an influence are foremost maternal health and well-being, the family's health care utilization and the parental assessment of their own health. Additional studies are needed to fully understand the concept of infant health. The need for an infant definition that empowers infant health arises because, if a common ground is not clearly established, miscommunication may arise. Furthermore, there is a need to initiate a model for infant health.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness is today seen as one of Sweden’s main public illnesses among children and adolescents. Previous studies have shown that there are several factors that can be the basis for the emergence of mental illness among children and adolescents. The study highlights both structural factors and within the individual, these are then broken down into different sub-themes to increase the understanding of the factors. Aim: The aim of this litteratur reviewis to increase the understanding of the emergence of mental illness among children and adolescents. The questions: Whatfactors can lead to development of mental illness? How can we understand the factors from a socialpsychological perspective?Method:A literature review based on 16 scientific articles and four dissertations. A content analysis and thematic analysis were performed and resulted in two categories, of which five were subcategories. Results:Two main categories emerged, Structural factorsand Factors within the individual. The literature review showed that the emergence of mental illness was strongly associated with social affiliation, school environment, social norms, self-esteem and personality traits. Discussion:The results indicate theimportance of children and adolescents' social relationships, the high self-esteem and self-confidence for them to feel secure. But also to facilitate the creation of identity and belonging they form during adolescence. It is important that children and adolescents at an early age have access to the resources they need to become resilient into the future and be able to deal with personal adversity. They can access the resources through family, school and friends, however, it is also about the individual seeing life through an optimistic and positive perspective to manage the emergence of mental illness.

Barnahus som samverkansorganisation: En kvalitativ studie om anställdas yrkesroller och yrkesidentiteter2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

En internt segregerad skola: En kvalitativ studie utifrån elevernas egna upplevelser på Klaraskolan i Halmstad2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative essay has been performed on the secondary school Klaraskolan in Halmstad. The school has two defined groups that derive from two separate, different and homogenous schools. The aim of the essay is to identify the pupil’s experiences, thoughts and opinions about the social environment on Klaraskolan in relation to their different backgrounds. The primary focus for the essay is to examine differences between the groups that contribute to an internally segregated school. Conclusions will be made from how the power is distributed between the groups and how that affects the social cohesion. The main theory for the essay is Pierre Bourdieus field theory with two supportive theories which is Michel Foucaults conceptof disciplinary power and Ove Sernhedes concept of territorial stigmatization. The empiricism is collected by two group interviews, four individual interviews and three observations. The result proved that there are significant differences in how the pupil’s experienced their schooling, how they chose to interact with their friends and how they experience their treatment by their teachers and surroundings. The conclusions made by this was that language and residential area is of big importance regarding how they defined themselves and how they interpreted the opposite group. Regarding power between the two groups they dominated different social spaces at school. These conclusions combined generated the final conclusion that Klaraskolan can be defined as an internally segregated school.

Who cares about those who care?: Design and technologies of power in Swedish elder care2019In: Proceedings of the Nordic Design Research Conference, 2019, Vol. 8, p. 1-9Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Design is increasingly recognized as an instrument of power. We explore power in the context of the Swedish welfare state and care institutions, which are undergoing political and structural reconfiguration as new technologies are introduced. Our aim is to better understand the effects of designed technologies within care institution and over care workers. Through our research, we have identified deviances, or gaps, between institutional policies and daily working practices, in which workers must cope within a grey zone of legality. Against this backdrop, we bring together and discuss concepts from philosopher Michel Foucault and sociologist Dorothy Smith in order to frame issues of power relevant to design. We elaborate upon these issues through a discussion of our project set in Swedish elder care institutions. Three 'research through (critical) design' examples illustrate ways and extents to which power is exerted over care workers. We discuss effects upon their subjectivity, including how their knowledge and agency can risk being ignored or overruled. Ultimately, we argue for design research to examine and articulate the (powerful) role of design in such contexts. We see this as a form of 'De-Scription' and active 'mapping' that can open up for wider debate and reconfigurations of power.

Materializing “Ruling Relations”: A Case of Gender, Power and Elder Care in Sweden2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reflects upon our critical (feminist) design research approach developed in response to the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (Vinnova)’s innovation program on equality. As a pilot of the program, the subject of our research is equality within elder care work, a female-dominated employment sector with particular gender and power dynamics. We have responded to this program and sector by rethinking our research methodologies and critical design research method. Inspired by institutional ethnography and the concept of ‘ruling relations’, our research approach involves critical design to materialize structural inequalities manifested within the everyday micro-practices of care work. Stories and sketches (as ‘material theses’) were generated through qualitative fieldwork involving ‘research through design’ processes to observe, document, explore, interpret, discuss and communicate gendered practices of elder care. Three themes emerged along the way, which articulate ruling relations revealed within elder care work. This research case is reported here along with reflections about the potentials of critical design as a (feminist) research approach capable of more critically interrogating power and positionality within design and innovation. From our perspective, equality as a policy and subject of research – including design research – calls for critical (and feminist) theoretical and methodological development.

En organisationskultur sitter inte i väggarna, den sitter i människorna: En kvalitativ studie om inkludering utifrån ett ledarskapsperspektiv på ett industriföretag i Sverige.2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study in sociology was to examine the managers view on including leadership and how leaders see their own role in creation of including organizational culture. The following questions were the focus of the study: What is an including leadership according to the managers in an industrial enterprise? How do industrial enterprise managers look at their own role in the making of an organizational culture? And also, what are the difficulties of leading inclusively according to the managers of the industrial enterprise? The goal with this study is to illustrate the importance of inclusion work and that it will enhance the awareness of norms and behavioral patterns within the organizations. The thesis is gleaned on a study about hermeneutic methodology of qualitative character, including semi-structured interviews with eight industrial managers within the same company. The theories used in the thesis are Bourdieu's (1999) theory of habitus, de los Reyes & Mulinaris (2005) theory of intersectionality and Tillys (2000) theory of persistent inequality.

The results show that managers see including leadership as an important aspect in creating an including organizational culture. They believe that there are difficulties with language, communication, attitudes and ignorance about differences. However, it was difficult for the managers to find concrete measures for the difficulties and there were partly divided opinions about gender segregation in the managerial positions.

Keywords: leadership, inclusion and exclusion, organizational culture, discrimination, difficulties.

    Abstract [en]

Every third social worker is exposed to client violence and threats. The recent protest against the LVU-legislation has contributed to a debate that has increased the vulnerability of social workers. The aim of this qualitative study is to examine the effects that threats and violence has on social work. The research questions of this study concern the professional role and discretion of social workers, the strategies for managing violence, and attitudes toward safety procedures. A semi-structured interview approach is utilized, involving six social workers from three municipalities. The findings of this study suggest that threats and violence have an impact on the work of social workers and can have consequences for both investigations and decisions. Social workers utilize various strategies to manage obvious violence and threats, whereas unspoken threats are difficult to define and handle. The trust and knowledge of safety procedures varies, while the support of colleagues is crucial. Based on this, the role of mentalization in the normalization process is discussed, and how threats and violence are expected to be accepted as a part of the job. The impact on discretion is discussed in terms of authority and how it influences clients, as well as discussions regarding the consequences of excessive safety procedures.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to examine how structural and relational social circumstances affect the living conditions for migrant women in lone motherhood households. The structural challenges that contributes to the groups vulnerable position in society will be examined in this essay through financial resources in the form of opportunities and obstacles on the labor market and contact with welfare functions. Social resources will also be in focus because of the migration to Sweden which means access to important social networks may be lacking. Cultural background and the adaptation to a new society with a foreign language, norms and expectations can affect the women's ability to accommodate good living standards. The empirical material is based on eight qualitative interviews, with migrant women in lone motherhood households, and their personal stories and experiences. The sociological theoretical framework consists of an intersectional perspective, Scheff's theory of social bonds and Habermas theory of system and lifeworld. The essay's key points cover the individualistic societal development that has challenged the living conditions for the group in question. Society's dismantling of welfare functions contributes to high demands on relationships in the lifeworld of the women, where social relationships with women in a similar position prove to be of big importance for good health and well-being.

    Abstract [sv]

Successful dying. Later life strategics to cope with the finiteness of life [Att förhålla sig till andligheten i livet och strategier för "framgångsrikt döende"]2020In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 57, no 3-4, p. 271-287Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to explore how older people relate to the finiteness of life. Unlike many other similar studies, this study focuses on older people outside palliative care and residential care, those who are still active and engaged in society. When, and in what ways do finiteness of life become apparent to them in their everyday lives? What strategies do they use to manage awareness of the finiteness of life? In 2015, data was collected via six focus group occasions with people aged 69-90. The result show that finiteness of life was something that all respondents were occupied with almost daily and in several ways. In most cases with ambiguity and even fear for the uncertainty of the future, but also with a feeling that the awareness of finitude made the present more valuable. Death was manifested in the respondents everyday lives, as something to be postponed, planned and administered by the types of self-disciplining techniques that are significant for successful ageing. I therefore conclude that these norms and techniques of suc-cessful ageing have expand into the field of ways of practice dying and thereby, become norms and techniques of successful dying. © 2020 Sociologisk Forskning. Age Negotiation and Active Bodies at Senior Camps in Sweden2016In: The Futures we want: Global Sociology and the Struggles for a better World: 10-14 July 2016, Vienna, Austria, Book of Abstracts, 2016, p. 42-42Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the beginning of 2000 senior camps have been established on several places in Sweden, with the purpose to decrease social exclusion and improve health amongst elderly people. These senior camps build on notions of what it means to age and to ”be old” in relation to activity, health, functional abilities and participation in society. In a cross-scientific and holistic study at CASE, Lund University these senior camps have been studied from three perspectives 1) History of ideas: What is the cultural meaning of senior camps?. 2) Ethnology: How is age made visible and important at senior camps? 3) Occupational Science: What are the individual social and health aspects of the senior camp? In this presentation we focus on findings from part study 2, that is, how age is performed and made meaningful at senior camps. The data consists of ethnographical field notes collected from two central senior camps. We are going to show examples of  how and when the participators use “age negotiation” and “perform age” in social relations at senior camps and discuss how this negotiation can be interpreted relative to societal norms about older people and health and what is considered “age appropriate”; but also how the seniors use age performance to object to images of older people or to claim their independence.  In the perfomance of age the body and functionality becomes central and bodies are compared, evaluated and discussed in relation to age and ageing.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to get abetter understanding of howunit managers in eldercare describe how they view and use the Lex Sarah, existing knowledge on the subject and how they reason around the word anomaly. The study is qualitative and based on semi-structured interviews. The study is based on a hermeneutic approach because I wanted to know my respondents ideas and experiences concerning Lex Sarah. Six unit managers were interviewed. The managers describe their knowledge, how they used the Lex Sarah in operations and how they see the ills. The result of the study shows that the knowledge of the subject Lex Sarah needs to be improved both among unit managers and among staff. It also needs to be improved in the area of reporting, there is a need for a more uniform approach to what a substantial risk of an anomaly is and when it should be reported. Today it`s classified in many different ways though it says in the rules that it should not be done. Respondents think that Lex Sarah is a good and necessary part of the systematic quality work at the same time they see it as guilt. The study has been analyzed using scientific theories organizational theories and management theories.

    Abstract [en]

From a historical perspective, Sweden is a classic example of a social democratic state in view ofits early development of labor movements, democracy and focus on the welfare state. Today, as amember state of the EU, Sweden has however come to be influenced by America’s neoliberalpolities, where companies need to deliver more and better products/services while the consumerawareness and sensitivity has increased about company’s way to invest. Research shows thatScandinavian companies, primarily in Denmark and Sweden, has a leading position when it comesto responsible corporate behavior which has been the reason to our choice of studying howSwedish companies do to achieve success in CSR. To carry out this study, we have usedqualitative analysis, using semi-structures to interview companies in different industry sectors. Allthe companies we interviewed were aware of the paradoxical quest for accumulation andsustainability, largely because of the limitations of resources and regulations. To address thischallenge, companies put a lot of emphasis on work in projects where they’re focusing the wellbeingof its own staff and by setting strict requirements on suppliers. Using previous researcharticles, an organizational theory (Hatch) and Weber’s social actions theory, we’ve tried todevelop our understanding of these phenomena.

Får jag tala om att jag nätdejtar?: en studie om attityder till nätdejting2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Autism, new media and the transformation of "the social"2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

People with Asperger Syndrome and high function autism generally suffers from impaired social skills and a strong need for a private space for oneself. In diagnostic classifications of mental illnesses social awkwardness and a strong desire for solitude are viewed as symptoms of mental disorder and as deviances from an imagined normality.

Based on interviews with autistic people and analysis of social interaction between them on a social media platform the aim of this paper is to investigate how new social media transform their situation in various ways. New social media, with its culture of connectivity, reshape how they relate to others and themselves and transform vulnerabilities that are always at play in encounters between human beings. At play are also changing borders between the public and the private as well as the questioning of communicative ideals based on face-to-face encounters.

More specifically we focus on how new social media transforms: 1) vulnerabilities between people in social interaction as well as the “interaction order” that regulates this interaction; 2) what it means to be a social being – and consequently to be involuntary lonely or seeking solitude.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate how unit managers work with sick leave due to work-related mental health in public elderly care. Based on the aim, four issues have been worked out to develop and increase understanding of the study's problem area. The methodology of the study is qualitative interviews with a hermeneutic approach and thematic analysis as a method of processing. The qualitative interviews were conducted with nine unit managers from two different municipalities in southern Sweden. The results showed that unit managers have latitude to work preventively to reduce sick leave and that differs from how rehabilitation is handled. Unit managers in elderly care have clear guidelines when it comes to rehabilitation while preventive work does not have it. Therefor, unit manager have latitude for working more prevention to reduce sick leave. All respondents understood that preventive work is an important factor in reducing sick leave, but that time and number of employees can make it difficult for preventive work to be prioritized.

Coming across a hidden problem in an excluded population in Sweden: professionals’ experiences of young migrants’ disclosures of sexual violence2023In: Culture, Health and Sexuality, ISSN 1369-1058, E-ISSN 1464-5351Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Growing evidence suggests that young migrants are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. As young migrants often lack family and social networks, professionals are often the recipients of disclosures of sexual violence. This study aimed to explore how professionals experience young migrants’ disclosures of sexual violence. A qualitative design was used, based on 14 semi-structured interviews with a range of professionals from the public sector and civil society in southern Sweden. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The overarching theme developed was ‘coming across the hidden problem of sexual violence in an excluded population’ supported by three sub-themes: ‘linking structural marginalisation and vulnerability to sexual violence’; ‘realising that sexual violence is one among many other concerns’; and ‘taking pride in backing up young people betrayed by society’. Professionals expressed a strong sense of responsibility due to the complex vulnerabilities of young migrants and their lack of access to services. This, coupled with the lack of clarity about how to respond to disclosures of sexual violence, can lead to moral distress. There is a need to strengthen support for professionals, including recognition of ethical dilemmas and the establishment of formal connections between organisations making access more straightforward and predictable. © 2023 The Author(s).
