    Abstract [en]

Telephone counseling is a common form of care. In an increasing medical and technical development in ophthalmological care is ophthalmic nurses skills demanded by both patients, relatives and colleagues in other areas of health care. The purpose of this study was to examine the eye nurses experiences of telephone counseling in ophthalmology. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach and data were collected through semi-structured interview. The material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results showed that eye nurses were confident and proud of their professional role. They experienced the work as fun, stimulating and challenging. They saw themselves as a pilot in the care of a large advisory role related to their specific knowledge. They also described some difficulties in triagera by phone. They wanted better assessment documentation but was confident in their assessments and any fear of notifications to the regulator were not revealed. They also expressed a need for training in counseling skills. Ophthalmic nurses lacked the time for collegial reflection to develop their professional attitude in the work of telephone counseling.

    Abstract [en]

At the moment there is little research about the outcome of people who have had an eye surgically removed. This may result in an ophthalmic nurse giving insufficient information to patients and relatives. Therefore, it would be interesting to investigate the vision related quality of life in relation to the eyesight of persons who have undergone an eye amputation. The purpose was to illustrate the vision related quality of life of people who have been subject to an eye amputation and have an eye prothesis. The study is a cross-sectional study with a descriptive design. The data collection was conducted using the questionnaire NEI-VFQ-25 together with supplementary questions which was sent to adults who have undergone an eye amputation in the last five years. The results showed that eye amputees had lower vision-related quality of life than participants in a control group from the H70 study 2014/2015 with and without visual symptoms. The biggest inconvenience for the participants was peripheral vision and both near activities and distance activities. The results of the study can provide the ophthalmic nurse with a deeper knowledge to be used working with personcentered care and provide thourough information to support persons how has went through an eye amputation to manage their new life situation. Further research on eye amputees vision-related quality of life nationally is needed because the result is based on a limited study group.

    Abstract [en]

With the improved health and longevity, the incidence of age-related eye diseases increases. Research has showed that nurses in public health do not pay attention to visually impaired at any significant extent. Nurses have an important role in helping the elderly patient regarding eye disease and vision loss which can improve their health and wellbeing. The purpose of the study was to explore the Municipality nurse's experiences of care for older patients with eye disease. The study was conducted as a qualitative interview with the inductive approach, participants in the study were six municipal nurses. Results showed that they experienced a lack of experience of eye disease and it was not a priority in the documentation and nursing. The results also showed that cooperation between health professionals is important because the nurse in the municipality usually work at a distance from the patient, and must rely on the nursing staff. It also emerged that there was a need for knowledge about eye diseases and skills were needed. Training of ophthalmic care for nursing students and nurses working in the municipality is significant in the future as well as further research on the care of eye disease in municipal health care. The knowledge that the study has given is that it can create the conditions for municipal nurses to promote health and give a safe environment for the older patient with eye disease.

History of falling and visual ability among independently living elderly in Sweden2016In: Clinical Ophthalmology, ISSN 1177-5467, E-ISSN 1177-5483, Vol. 10, p. 1265-1273Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the performance-based visual ability among independently living elderly subjects and to investigate whether there was any association between visual ability and falls.

Subjects and methods: A total of 298 randomly selected subjects aged 70–85 years were invited for an examination including monocular and binocular visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity (CS), stereoscopic vision, and monocular visual fields (VFs), which were integrated to estimate the binocular VFs. Type of lenses used in their habitual correction was noted.

Results: Out of the 212 subjects who were examined, 38% reported at least one fall and 48% of these reported at least two falls during the last 2 years. Most subjects had normal results; 90% had normal binocular VA, 85% had normal binocular CS, and ~80% had positive stereopsis. Twenty-nine subjects had VF defects in the lower quadrants of the binocular VF, and 14 of these reported at least one fall. A significant association was seen between one fall or more and VA better eye, the odds ratio (OR) was 2.26, P=0.013, and between recurrent falls and lack of stereoscopic vision, the OR was 3.23, P=0.002; no other functional test showed any significant association with recurrent falls. The ORs were 1.58 for worse binocular VA, 0.60 for worse binocular CS, and 0.71 for non-normal stereoscopic vision for at least one fall, but wide confidence intervals made it difficult to draw firm conclusions about any association. Bifocal or progressive spectacles were worn by 71% with no significant difference between fallers and nonfallers (P=0.078).

Conclusion: Even though ~40% of the total sample had experienced one or more falls, the only visual function test significantly associated with falls were VA better eye, lack of stereoscopic vision, and recurrent falls. Our results suggest that there may be more powerful predictors of falling than decreased visual ability. © 2016 Källstrand-Eriksson et al.

    Abstract [en]

Surgical removal of an eye can be caused by trauma or eye disease. In Sweden there are over 7000 persons with an artificial eye. The removal of the eye is done through enucleation, evisceration or exenteration. The monocular vision affects the visual function and thereby everyday activities and work. The ophthalmic nurse’s care focus on providing support to promote adjustment. The aim of the study was to describe how persons wearing artificial eyes experienced their quality of life after going through a surgical removal of an eye. The study was carried out as a systematic literature study which was based on 13 scientific articles. The articles were analysed with latent content analysis which lead to the categories physical, psychological and social impact and impact on everyday life. The results showed that the quality of life was affected by factors such as general health, discomfort from the orbital cavity, appearance, visual function, psychological well-being, self-esteem, relationships, role limitations, limited leisure activities, work capacity and time. For persons wearing artificial eyes to be able to adapt to the new situation, awareness, good coping strategies and commitment from the individual are required. This study gives ophthalmic nurses insight into how the quality of life is affected so they can provide targeted support to people with artificial eyes. Further research should focus on indepth interviews for increased knowledge in the field.
