    Abstract [en]

    “Who takes care of the manager?”An exploratory study of manager´s perceived organizational and social work environment. 

    The study aims to create a deeper understanding of managers' experiences, of their organizational and social work environment. Furthermore, the study aims to examine managers' perceptions of health factors that they perceive as health-promoting. The main question of this study is; “How do managers experience their organizational and social work environment?”. As previous research has often focused on preventive factors, this study focuses on a health-promoting perspective. Which refers to the study's second question; "What health factors do managers perceive as health-promoting?". The study applies a qualitative method through semi-structured interviews for the collection of empirical material. The sample consists of eight first-line and middle managers in various industries. The study has an exploratory focus in order to create a basis for further research. 

    The results of the study show that recovery, communication, colleagues, social relationships, clear roles, goals and tasks are perceived as important organizational and social aspects in the manager's own work environment. The results also show that perceived health factors are flexibility in working hours, being heard, support from colleagues, functioning social relationships and recovery by adapting their meetings.

    En av park- och gatuarbetarnas många verktyg, är den traditionella sopkvasten.

    Sopkvasten används för att städa upp ytor där maskiner inte kommer åt, såsom;

    under bänkar, i hörn och mindre områden. Vid användning av en traditionell

    sopkvast innefattar rörelsen rotation och framåtlutning av kroppsställningen, som

    kan om den utförs under en längre tidsperiod leda till muskuloskeletala besvär och

    ha negativa effekter på hälsan. Detta projekt syftar till att utveckla ett nytt

    rengöringsverktyg för att minska framåtlutad, roterad kroppsställning.

    Denna avhandling har använt en produktutvecklingsmetodik och en biomekanisk

    analys för att uppfylla en faktabas för att nå målet. Översyn av litteratur,

    biomekanisk analys och benchmarking användes för att ställa in

    kravspecifikationer för detta projekt. Projektet tillämpade David G Ullman iterativ

    produktutvecklingsmetodik, inklusive brainstorming, Quality Function

    Deployment, Morfologi, Pugh's matris och Failure Mode Effects Analysis. Vidare

    har en fungerande prototyp byggts som ett sista steg i utvecklingsfasen.

    Utvärdering av prototypen i jämförelse med den traditionella sopkvasten, utfördes

    med hjälp av 3D rörelseanalys (Qualisys motion capture-system) och ytelektromyografi

    (Mega 8-kanalsystem) på en testperson.

    Projektet resulterade i en fysiskt fungerande prototyp som kan användas till

    liknande uppgifter som en traditionell sopkvast. Prototypen påtvingar användaren

    att skjuta rengöringsverktyget framför kroppen med en symmetrisk kroppställning

    i alla tre planen. Jämförelsen mellan en traditionell sopkvast och prototypen

    visade en minskning i muskelaktivitet vid användning av prototypen. Dessutom

    visade rörelseanalysen att arbetsställningen var mindre framåtlutad och roterad i

    ryggen. Vidare kunde testpersonen hålla neutrala vinklar i axlar och handleder

    under hela utförandet av uppgiften. Märk väl att de biomekaniska analyserna

    enbart gjorts på en deltagare vilket inte är tillräckligt för att konstatera att

    prototypen bidrar till en mer hälsosam arbetsställning.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis amends some existing theoretical gaps and an overall lack of empirical studies regarding the ways R&D managers can use Open Innovation during the management of the radical innovation processes’ early development phase.Using existing theories, an interview guide and an analytical model was created. These were later used during the gathering and analysis of empirical data. Our sampling involves three of Sweden’s largest companies, representing three distinct industry fields. Interviews took place during April 2010, and all the interviewees were R&D managers with previous experience with Open Innovation and radical innovation.The results reveal that the managers do use Open Innovation when managing radical innovation, and point to both benefits and issues brought about by using Open Innovation during this process. The use of Open Innovation during the management of radical innovation can be divided into two main aspects; the actual extent to which it is used, and the ways the managers use it. Our results reveal that the extent varies from an early peak, an in between Open Innovation chasm and a final increase. Furthermore, our studies also show that the main ways the managers use OI are; exploitation and creation of revenue streams, knowledge leveraging and integration, and finally to create superior products using broad knowledge networks.

    Innovation is paramount to success. Over time firms must maintain their ability to innovate in order to maintain their competitive edge. In this paper we explore the role human resource management has in nurturing and enhancing the innovative capability of the firm. To explore HRM activities, functions and processes that enhance or impede innovativeness we conducted a literature review. Following this review, 10 propositions have been made that link HRM to both incremental and radical innovativeness respectively. Our results include suggestions for empirical studies to validate our propositions as well as some managerial implications.

    Abstract [sv]

    Detta examensarbete har gjorts på uppdrag av, och i samarbete med Getinge Sterilization. Syftet med detta projekt har varit att ta fram en lösning som gör vagnarna i SMART-vagnsserien mer lättmanövrerade, då användare idag upplever dessa som svårmanövrerade. Handtaget och vagnens hjulkonfiguration identifierades som de faktorer som främst påverkar vagnarnas manövreringsförmåga. Arbetet riktades därför in på att ta fram ett nytt handtag och en ny hjulkonfiguration som löser manövreringsproblemet. Tillsammans med Getinge togs därefter en kravprofil fram med krav och önskemål för de nya lösningarna.

    I ett första skede togs en rad principlösningar fram på tänkbara lösningar till problemet i form av enklare skisser. Detta gjordes utan att ta hänsyn till några krav eller önskemål. Principlösningarna utvärderades därefter mot kraven där de lösningar som inte uppfyllde kraven sållades bort.

    Principlösningarna för handtag som gick vidare från utvärderingen presenterades för Getinge, som valde ut en av lösningarna som de ville ta fram en prototyp på. Det genomfördes därför inga fler utvärderingar på handtagen. Det utvalda handtaget genomgick primärkonstruktionsprocessen och vidareutvecklades i ett antal omgångar för att på bästa sätt uppfylla kraven samt kunna tillverkas i en bockningsmaskin. En prototyp för den slutgiltiga lösningen togs fram.

    Principlösningarna för hjulkonfigurationerna genomgick ytterligare en utvärdering, denna gång mot önskemålen. För de principlösningar som gick vidare från den sista utvärderingen tillverkades prototyper och ett användartest genomfördes för att få fram den slutgiltiga lösningen.

    Resultatet av examensarbetet är en lastvagn med ett extra hjulpar, samt ett nytt, mindre handtag, för att uppfylla projektets syfte.

    Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka mellanchefers upplevelser av den psykosociala arbetsmiljön. Studien baserades på fem utvalda respondenter, där kriteriet var att de befann sig på en mellanposition, med rapporteringsskyldighet både uppåt och nedåt inom organisationen. Insamlingen av data utgick från semistrukturerade intervjuer, och analyserades genom innehållsanalys. Resultatet tyder på att upplevelsen av tydligheten på kraven som ställs, det stora beslutsutrymme och det höga stödet från samtliga parter i organisationen gör att mellancheferna i denna studie upplever den psykosociala arbetsmiljön i organisationen som god. Trots stressigare perioder upplever de att ovan nämnda faktorer reducerar risken för skadlig stress. Till skillnad från tidigare forskning visade analysen av resultatet i vår studie att rollen som mellanchef inte behöver leda till skadlig stress. Slutligen diskuteras studiens arbetsvetenskapliga bidrag och förslag till framtida forskning.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the constituent parts of learning in the manufacturing work context and understand why these parts are key in the learning of the employees. Design/methodology/approach: The data was collected from two sources: a literature review of the Information Systems literature to establish an initial picture of what learning in relation to digital technologies entails and in-depth interviews with engineers in the automotive industry whose knowledge-intensive work is exposed to substantial digital transformation. Findings: The authors first identified three constituent parts for learning: change, reflection and deliberation. When the authors cross-checked the initial findings through in-depth interviews with the engineers, it was found that these three themes trigger learning through three different mechanisms, that is, balancing newness, finding point of reference and organizing actively. Thus, the findings of this paper extend beyond a categorical identification of what constitutes learning to also illustrate why learning entails these constituent parts. Research limitations/implications: This paper implies that progressive learning requires active organizing of learning stages. The data is limited to the review of the Information Systems field. The authors have also only focused on the automotive industry as the representative sector in the manufacturing industry. Practical implications: Applying the model of progressive learning can be a primary way to actively plan and organize learning opportunities for employees. This is key for supporting learning culture in organizations that are exposed to continuous and disruptive changes. Social implications: A significant part of social sustainability is based on sustainable employability and feelings of contentment at work. This paper is an attempt to highlight how sustainable employability can be achieved by providing effective learning opportunities at work. Originality/value: The originality of this paper emerges from two sources. First, the authors conducted the literature review and in-depth interviews by devising innovative methods because of the challenges of identifying when (informal) learning has occurred at work. Second, the authors owe the in-depth interviews to the first author’s extensive familiarity with the automotive industry and the knowledge and rapport acquired through her prior longitudinal research on the engineers’ work. It was this background that allowed the authors to find out when these engineers were about to leave the firm because of discontent about their competence development. © 2022, Charlotte A.     Flash is the unwanted or excessrubber material that presents on the outersurface of themolded rubber product. This will affect the surface finish; it is a cosmetic defect andit can be removed. It forms because of the leak or the excess molded rubber materialbetween the surface of the mold, typically on the parting line, (Jordan Anderson,2014). The presence of flash will reduce customer satisfaction. There are manymethods to remove the flash. The method is selected according to the degree of flashextension and the location where it occurs.The project aims to design a semi/full automated machine, which helps for having asmooth and fine surface finish of the weight plates. These plates are made up of rubberfor the ELEIKO group. The weight plates have different weights from 10 to 20 kg,but the diameter of each plate stays the same, but the thickness will be different foreach plate. The machine should be designed that removes all the excess rubber andshould smoothen the outer surface of the weight. The purpose of this work is to gainknowledge about different product development methods, respective tools, andtechniques that are used. The machine should be user- friendly, should not becomplicated, should not damage the workpiece (marks or trace of the blade), shouldnot put the employer in danger, and economically feasible.This report presents the progress of designing of the product, product development,methods, and literature study. The designed model can construct in the industry fortheir problem they are faced by the flash. The model is very simple and unique so thateveryone can perform the task without any previous experience. Material alternativeswere evaluated as well as manufacturing possibilities. The designed machine was theoffered for free as means for further research and development.

    Examensarbete är utfört på Kvibille Mejeri och innefattar att utforma en paketeringslinje för ädelost.

    Dagens linje har en maximal produktionskapacitet på två ton per dag, räknat på att det är tre aktörer på linjen. Produktionen innefattar tre olika produkter som ska paketeras. Linjen har en hög grad av manuellt arbete och anses vara oergonomisk och svårhanterlig enligt personalen på linjen. Målet för arbetet är att förbättra de ergonomiska aspekterna på linjen och om möjligt minska personalbehovet, utan att äventyra produktionskapaciteten.

    För att hitta de förbättringar som kan utföras på linjen gjordes en för- och bakgrundsstudie. S tudierna innefattar intervjuer, observationer i form av en Rapid Plant Assessment, tidsmätningar och simuleringar. Studierna visade att det kändes påfrestande att arbeta på linjen och att flödet avstannar på flera stationer vilket hindrar flödet. Fördelen är att linjen är flexibel och alla moment i linjen är orienterade i rätt ordning.

    Efter att all fakta var insamlad och det var fastställt vad som behövdes för linjen påbörjades sökandet efter leverantörer. Det som behövdes var höj- och sänkbara bord och arbetsmattor för att förbättra arbetsförhållandena. Även automation undersöktes för att minimera påfrestningarna på personalen. Automationen byttes senare ut mot manuellt styrda hjälpmedel och semi-automatiska maskiner då det ansågs vara mer kostnadseffektivt. För att effektivisera linjen undersöktes vågar med automatiska etikettappliceringar och alternativa paketeringsmetoder. Dessa metoder involverade att byta ut materialet på folien så att behovet för inplastning elimineras.

    Resultatet blev att byta ut borden till höj- och sänkbara arbetsbänkar samt införa en vakuumlyft för att förbättra ergonomin på linjen. Aluminiumfolien byts ut till en mer tålig vaxlaminerad folie vid namn DanaPhane med en integrerad namnetikett i folien, vilket eliminerar behovet av plastfolie och etikett. Då behovet för dessa elimineras, minimeras miljöpåverkan i form av materialåtgång och transportkostnader. Elimineringen medför också färre arbetsmoment vilket minskar personalbehovet. För att ytterligare effektivisera linjen införs en automatiserad våg och viktetikettering för varje ost.

    Exchanging status information between closely located mobile agents is an underlying process in numerous future Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). Real-time updates including positions of neighboring nodes is performed when, for example, autonomous vehicles execute a cooperative maneuver, industrial robots collaborate with each other on a task, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) execute a mission in a swarm. For the design of networked automatic control strategies in these scenarios, it is essential to understand the performance of such Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications from the information freshness perspective. To this end, we introduce a mathematical framework which allows characterizing the Age of Information (AoI) in networks governed by the Carrier-Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) protocol. Differently from existing work, we take into account the fact that update packets sent by mobile nodes are not necessarily periodic, since packet triggering is often coupled with agents’ mobility. Our approach is based on the assumption that diverse mobility-triggered message generation patterns can be modeled by a wide class of update traffic arrival processes. We apply Discrete Markovian Arrival Process (DMAP), which is a versatile arrival model able to fit arrival patterns that are modulated by a finite state machine, including bursty traffic. We develop an accurate and efficient analytical model of nodes exchanging one-hop broadcast update messages with bursty arrivals to evaluate the moments as well as entire probability distribution of several performance metrics, including AoI. An asymptotic analysis for large networks suggests a simple way to control the update message rate to minimize the AoI. We show that the optimal update rate that minimizes the mean AoI coincides with the optimum of the wireless channel utilization. Numerical examples point out that the asymptotic theory provides accurate predictions also for small values of the number of nodes. © 2013 IEEE.

    Abstract [en]

    There is a growing trend of using digital production, such as additive manufacturing, in direct consumer markets. Digital production enables new and advanced tools, which provide shorter development time and lower cost for manufacturing. In this paper we focus on the education and learning environment for digital production and prototyping at a fabrication laboratory (FabLab). FabLab (Fabrication Laboratory) is a small-scale innovation space offering digital fabrication and production. A FabLab is, among many things, a platform for learning and exchanging experience when experimenting and developing new solutions. FabLabs bring together students, researchers and teachers as well as industrial partners in a single physical location for the purposes of designing, prototyping, and do-it-yourself manufacturing. This explorative and creative environment provide insights to knowledge creation, based on the constructive learning theory, which address active involvement by the participants. To take full advantage of this creative learning environment, aspects such as student characteristics, the nature of the subject matter, and the teaching carried out by the staff, also needs to be addressed. © 2019 International Institute of Informatics and Systemics

    Abstract [en]

    Digital manufacturing can produce new and advanced tools more rapidly and at lower cost than traditional manufacturing. This new technology means manufacturers need to develop innovative business models adapted to this change in the manufacturing landscape. With digital manufacturing, companies have both an opportunity and a challenge. They can enter new markets where large-scale production provides competitive advantage. They can enter niche markets that become more attractive as old boundaries and structures lose relevance. Yet their additive manufactured components must meet the same standards set for conventional manufactured components. However, we know little about how companies manage this change as they make the transition from traditional manufacturing to digital manufacturing. This chapter presents two co-creation digital manufacturing projects between university researchers and Swedish companies. In each project, the goal was to develop sustainable and efficient digital production methods that offer tailor-made product solutions. Various technical methods used in the projects are described as materials, and prototypes are developed, tested, and analyzed.

    The way a product or material is experienced by its user could be different depending on the scenario. It is also well known that different materials and surfaces are used for different purposes. When optimizing materials and surface roughness for a certain something with the intention to improve a product, it is important to obtain not only the physical requirements, but also the user experience and expectations. Laws and requirements of the materials and the surface function, but also the conservative way of thinking about materials and colours characterize the design of medical equipment. The purpose of this paper is to link the technical- and customer requirements of current materials and surface textures in medical environments. By focusing on parts of the theory of Kansei Engineering, improvements of the companys' products are possible. The idea is to find correlations between desired experience or «feeling» for a product, -customer requirements, functional requirements, and product geometrical properties -design parameters, to be implemented on new improved products. To be able to find new materials with the same (or better) technical requirements but a higher level of user stimulation, the current material (stainless steel) and its surface (brushed textures) was used as a reference. The usage of focus groups of experts at the manufacturer lead to a selection of twelve possible new materials for investigation in the project. In collaboration with the topical company for this project, three new materials that fulfil the requirements -easy to clean and anti-bacterial came to be in focus for further investigation in regard to a new design of a washer-disinfector for medical equipment using the Kansei based Clean ability approach CAA. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

    A material and surface selection within the car industry is usually based on a comprehensive study based on sensation and perception, focusing on particular perceived qualities and impressions (emotional functions) through visual and tactile interaction of plastic surfaces. On top of that ‘emotional function’, the ‘technical function’ such as surface roughness or gloss for a certain matter in symbiosis, will result in a number of material and surface proposals. The range of materials fitting into the window of these requirements varies depending on the industry’s ability to hit the target specified in regard to the ‘emotional functions’, usually defined by the designer’s intention. Thus, to be able to get a deeper understanding of how to frame the ‘emotional functions’ and link them to the ‘technical functions’, two user studies were made in this paper. The user studies were made with two different designs however with the same main research target to be able to understand the varieties of these two. The aim of doing so was to be able to find the user study design that was the most time efficient and providing the most significant data linked to the ‘technical functions’ and process control/traceability. However also finding the user study design with the least strains for the participating users in regard to uninterrupted brain activity. By designing the user study in relevant subsets in a certain sequence, user study design nr 2 has proven to be more time efficient and provide more data regarding the soft metrology. Future work will focus on deeper knowledge about how these surfaces different material- and surface properties correlate to the participants responses regarding perceived quality of a car interior design. The development of a new non-contact measurement is also discussed, enabling the possibility to complement and improve the hard metrology set up. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Performing product development means to simultaneously develop product systems, production processes and marketing efforts. Product Development processes are often complex as they are time dependent and contain many inter-dependencies e.g. between parts and individuals involved Due to the complexity in these processes the methods for research on integrated product development processes need to be designed differently than traditional research methods used. The study of details of totalities can work for mechanical systems but less well for complex systems. For a deeper knowledge of complex systems substantial researcher involvement and participation in real time is essential, which Insider Action Research (IAR) is designed for. IAR can be performed from the three main positions as observer, team member or project leader. The-following conclusions have been drawn (Bjork 2003): The IAR approach is beneficial in most types of development processes and projects when the aim of the research is to achieve increased knowledge and understanding. A mix of detailed and narrative descriptions of a research project provides also practitioners with an opportunity to adopt the findings. The implementation of research results would thereby become facilitated, which is an effect that most researchers as well as practitioners would benefit from.

    Whistleblowing är en möjlighet för en person att anonymt rapportera om en oegentlighet som förekommer inom organisationen. Studien har undersökt organisatoriska faktorer som påverkar denna möjlighet för den anställda, där fokus legat på vilka effekter rapporteringsstrukturen och organisationskulturen har för möjligheterna att rapportera. Undersökningen har utgått från en kvalitativ metod där intervjuer med fackliga företrädare har genomförts. Undersökning visade att det viktiga för att en whistleblowing-funktion ska ha en fungerande rapporteringsstruktur var kunskap om att funktionen finns, annars är det svårt att förvänta sig att få in rapporter. Vidare är det viktigt med tydliga rapporteringskanaler och riktlinjer där det framgår vad som är angeläget att rapportera om. Gällande organisationskulturen så var vikten av ett bra ledarskap det som framträdde tydligast. Har man ett ledarskap som tillåter en öppen kultur med högt i tak så skulle man inte vara i behov av funktionen i samma grad som om det vore lågt i tak. Är situationen sådan att man har anställda som använder sig av funktionen är det viktigt att man skapar en kultur där man som chef ser rapportörens handling som en förbättringsmöjlighet och därmed inte tilltar repressalier eller efterforska rapportören. Överlag var inställningen till funktionen att det vara bra att den fanns som ett alternativ, men att det primära borde vara att sträva mot en kultur där man kan ha dialoger på arbetsplatsen.

    Fokus för den kvalitativa studien är att undersöka mellanchefers upplevelse inom vård och omsorg i en byråkratisk organisation med särskild fokus på krav, kontroll och stöd. Vi har intervjuat 8 enhetschefer som jobbar inom en byråkratisk organisation, respondenterna har svarat på frågor gällande vilka upplevelser de har kring deras arbetssituation. Våra intervjuer gjordes på ett semistrukturerat sätt. På grund av det stora avståndet mellan oss uppsatsförfattare har vi valt att utföra 4 intervjuerna var.

    Resultatet visar att samtliga respondenter känner att de har stora krav från samhället, medarbetarna och ledningen. De menar att kraven har ökat med tiden och fortsätter öka som ett resultat av samhällets utveckling. Utöver kraven känner de också att de har kontroll över sitt arbete mestadels av tiden, men att det ibland finns stressiga perioder där de upplever att dygnets alla timmar inte räcker till.

    Vi ställde frågan om de upplever att de får stöd i sitt arbete, vilket de upplevde. De får stöd i form av administrativt stöd eller i form av olika gruppchefer. Samtliga respondenter visade stor tacksamhet till det stöd som de får. Utöver kraven som förväntas av mellanchefer i arbetet har vi även valt att ta upp kraven som sätts på individens hantering av känslor, i uppsatsen har vi valt att kalla det emotionell aktivitet. Alla respondenter upplevde att de någon gång behöver gå in i roll för att kunna hantera en viss situation på jobbet.

    Sammanfattningsvis har vi kommit fram till att trots att mellanchefer har höga krav, har de även hög kontroll inom en byråkratisk organisation. Enligt Karasek och Theorells (1990) krav, kontroll och stödmodell hamnar mellanchefer i kategorin för aktivt arbete, vilka löper stor risk för trötthet och utbrändhet.

    A Method to Identify Risks Associated with a PLM Solution2012Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Not all investments in PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) are successful. Measuring the business effects of a PLM solution is essential, but can only be applied subsequent to solution deployment. It could be more powerful to make an early evaluation of the PLM solution, resulting in the business benefits, making corrections possible prior to deployment.In this paper, a method to identify risks associated with a PLM solution is proposed based on an architecture model of a PLM solution and available PLM solution guidelines. Its use is demonstrated in an industry case and evaluated as compared to its intended use. The intention is that identified risks can help identify change proposals to the PLM solution or to obtain a better understanding of the consequences for solution deployment.The findings indicate that the method is a useful support for identifying risks associated with a PLM solution. However, additional testing of the method in real settings is necessary to strengthen that indication.

    The purpose of this project was to reduce setup time on a press machine at Nitator Hylte AB and to develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), which will serve as a basis for the operators to carry out the work. When the company was contacted so considered site manager that the current change over time was far from optimal and had the desire that it would be reduced by 50%. In connection with the project they were made some boundaries to make the project possible.

    The methodology that the authors have followed was Shigeo Shingo theory, Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED), which assumes that it will change the routine during transitions by making as much preparation work as possible, this is done by analyzes based on observation from observations, videotaping and timings. The resistance that can occur when trying to reduce setup time is the human aspect, this type of resistors most often occurs in the lack of education and lack of good communication.

    The results from the project led to a new routine for how the work should be executed during the changeover. During the project diffrent kind of technical solutions was created to simplify the work during the changeover. At the end of the project the aouthers conducted a pilottest to determinate how much time that had been reduced. The Results from the test showed that 50 % of the time had been reduced.

    To invent an optimized product is a complicated process. This process is only half of the work. It is equally important to develop a production system that can produce the product in an  efficient and ergonomic way.

    After several evaluations of conceptual and detailed drawings a final idea has come to light.The idea intends, to the maximum extent, utilize the facility in a more efficient way through moving assembly lines and stations closer to the flock section and the stock for complete products. To make the production better, stations are placed in more logical places given the assignment they are supposed to accomplish. This improves the material flow radically. An important aspect of the improvement is that the three assembly lines no longer will be dependent of each other because they will have all the stations they need.

    The final drawing uses the facility more efficiently. This opens up a big area close to the steam section. This area can be used to increase the productivity for the section. At present time the steam section have a capacity of around 9,000 units annually.

    The manufacturing and finishing (honing) of cylinder liners for the automotive industry is a constant challenge in order to reduce friction losses and oil consumption. A better knowledge of surfaces generated during plateau honing is then required for optimization of the process. Despite a well-known and controlled honing process, variations in surface roughness appear due to honing tool wear and need to be mapped and analyzed. The following paper proposes to map the variations in roughness by using confocal 3D measuring equipment able to inspect any area of a cylinder liner. Six motor blocks, each with five cylinder liners, were evaluated with 20 topography measurements per liner (giving six hundred 3D measurements in total). In addition to standard 3D roughness parameters, tailor made parameters extracting honing texture information are computed. The results show that only a few parameters (Spk, Ssc and Sk) do correlate with the honing tool wear specific to each cylinder. Tailor made parameters indicate similar results. Indeed, as the honing tool wears down, the cylinder liner surface gets rougher plateau or peaks and sharper asperities indicating that ploughing occurs instead of cutting. In future, experimental models could be built in order to perform production and functional optimizations. © 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    Topographies are one of the challenges for the development of the metal additive manufacturing promising technique. The article investigates multi scale topographies (from form to roughness) of as built surfaces generated by selective laser melting (SLM). Different building inclinations of samples were observed both for upskin and downskin surfaces with a wide range of measuring techniques. The two main aims are: (i) to make a critical review of measuring techniques at different scales, (ii) to enlighten the different surface generation phenomena (and the corresponding scale) occurring during additive manufacturing. The effect of heat treatment on each scale of the topography is also discussed. It is found that the focus variation technique is well suited for AM surfaces. Concerning the observation of the inclined surfaces, some parameters are emphasized as good indicators of typical signatures of AM surfaces: isotropy for the weld track component, the skewness and Rsm for the staircase effect, fractal dimension for the presence of partly melted particles. The different parameters studied helps to model and understand the different surface generation phenomena aforementioned. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.

    The possibility to reduce the amount of cutting fluids from machining processes is actively studied by the industrials and researchers. Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) is a solution towards cutting fluids reduction. This article investigates the consequences on friction coefficient induced by the use of MQL. A tribometer is used in order to simulate experimentally the tribological conditions encountered during machining. As the cutting speed increases a lower amount of oil is deposited on the rough surfaces. Depending on the MQL operating conditions and sliding velocities it is plausible to reach starvation by leaving the real rough contact partly dry. A model computing a starvation percentage by filling an estimated oil amount in a deformed topography correlates with the experimental results. © 2015 by ASME

    Products with complicated shapes require superior surface finish to perform the intended function. Despite significant developments in technology, finishing operations are still performed semi automatically/manually, relying on the skills of the machinist. The pressure to produce products at the best quality in the shortest lead time has made it highly inconvenient to depend on traditional methods. Thus, there is a rising need for automation which has become a resource to remain competitive in the manufacturing industry.

    Diminishing return of trading quality over time in finishing operations signifies the importance of having a pre-determined trajectory (tool path) that produces an optimum surface in the least possible machining time. Tool path optimization for finishing process considering tool kinematics is of relatively low importance in the present scenario. The available automation in grinding processes encompass around the dynamics of machining.

    In this paper we provide an overview of optimizing the tool path using evolutionary algorithms, considering the significance of process dynamics and kinematics. Process efficiency of the generated tool movements are studied based on the evaluation of relative importance of the finishing parameters. Surface quality is analysed using MATLAB and optimization is performed on account of peak to valley height.

    Surface removal characteristics are analysed based on process variables that have the most likely impact on surface finish. The research results indicated that tool path is the most significant parameter determining the surface quality of a finishing operation. The inter-dependency of parameters were also studied using Taguchi design of experiments. Possible combinations of various tool paths and tool influencing parameters are presented to realize a surface that exhibits lowest errors.

    Research on machine activity recognition (MAR) is drawing more attention because MAR can provide productivity monitoring for efficiency optimization, better maintenance scheduling, product design improvement, and potential material savings. A particular challenge of MAR for human-operated machines is the overlap when transiting from one activity to another: during transitions, operators often perform two activities simultaneously, e.g., lifting the fork already while approaching a rack, so the exact time when one activity ends and another begins is uncertain. Machine learning models are often uncertain during such activity transitions, and we propose a novel ensemble-based method adapted to fuzzy transitions in a forklift MAR problem. Unlike traditional ensembles, where models in the ensemble are trained on different subsets of data, or with costs that force them to be diverse in their responses, our approach is to train a single model that predicts several activity labels, each under a different context. These individual predictions are not made by independent networks but are made using a structure that allows for sharing important features, i.e., a context ensemble. The results show that the gated recurrent unit network can provide medium or strong confident context ensembles for 95% of the cases in the test set, and the final forklift MAR result achieves accuracies of 97% for driving and 90% for load-handling activities. This study is the first to highlight the overlapping activity issue in MAR problems and to demonstrate that the recognition results can be significantly improved by designing a machine learning framework that addresses this issue. © 2023 The Author(s)

    Abstract [en]

    Information sharing is an important factor for effectiveness within the internal supply chain. In this paper we use a methodology for mapping information flows in an internal supply chain, and case studies in two Swedish multinational organizations. Eight retrospective cases were used to map, describe and analyze the information flow that supports the physical material flow from the receipt of an order to point of delivery. Every involved person was interviewed on at least one occasion each. The interviews were conducted to map and describe the information and physical material flow. The aim was to identify factors that could improve and rationalise information flows and generate a better flow within the organization.

    The study shows the importance of an integrated information system, but also clearly indicates the importance of a collaborative culture and an awareness of the human-technology interface. The study also shows that three factors of interface distortions are most frequent in the cases: (1) changes registered in the database trigger no action among the staff, (2) new knowledge to staff is stored only orally and not in the database, and (3) interface between the paper system and the database, and between the old and the new information storage culture.

    Abstract [en]

    Battery abuse tests are necessary to ensure the safety of any product they are used in. To conduct scientific research of battery cell behavior in thermal runaway and propagation events, a unique test bench is necessary. This thesis assesses the material of a battery test bench in the development stage for damage throughout its lifetime. It focuses on the surface of the reactor, which must withstand the substances which are emitted during the thermal runaway abuse tests by battery cells. A detailed analysis of the emitted substances for the five main battery cell chemistries on the market and the resulting environment inside the reactor is conducted. The base material of the reactor, stainless steel 316L, is evaluated regarding chemical resistance in this environment. Mainly corrosion threats pose a risk and are assessed in different scenarios with varying temperature, chemical composition, and time of exposure. The base material design is not able to withstand the calculated worst case over the lifetime of the test bench. Therefore, several countermeasures are presented that can protect the reactor from corrosion. Furthermore, recommendations regarding use, handling and maintenance of the reactor surface are given to provide guidelines for the development.

    Reduced engine friction for low climate impact2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Reducing friction in the Piston-Cylinder Unit - PCU is one of the priorities in the automotive industry as it is the largest contributor to the frictional losses and hence the fuel consumption of the internal combustion engines. Not only fuel consumption, but also the oil consumption and emissions are largely affected by the piston-ring-liner interactions. Therefore, from an optimized PCU, competitive, economic and environmental benefits would be gained.  In this project, fuel/oil consumption and emissions of car and truck engines were reduced by using different cylinder liner finishes and different ring designs/loads. Experimental and theoretical studies have been performed by simulating and testing the behaviour of various oil control rings and cylinder liner surfaces in reciprocating tribotesters. Several full-scale engine tests were performed to verify the improvements. The engine tests showed up to 1.8% reduction of the fuel consumption while keeping low oil consumption by using smoothly honed liner surfaces and low ring loads/widths. Further reduction of the oil consumption was shown in the tribotests and simulations when textured liner surfaces were used. To accomplish this, a cost-effective texturing process has to be found and to be confirmed in the engine tests.

    Abstract [en]

    The presence of the honing scratches/grooves in cylinder liner surfaces is intended and desired as they improve the lubrication and retain the debris reducing the piston assembly/liner friction and consequently improve the fuel economy and longevity of the internal combustion (IC) engines. Axial scratches caused by the abrasive wear between the tribological partners and/or entrained wear particles are undesired since they are correlated with increased oil consumption and noxious emissions of the IC engines. Due to the imperfection of the manufacturing process, the honing grooves, especially the deep ones, are smeared and interrupted by folds. A portion of the folds would eventually detach during the running process and act as abrasive particles increasing the wear in the cylinder. To closely examine the influence of all these features on the liner's function, it emerges a need to objectively quantify the axial wear scratches, plateau honing grooves, deep honing grooves and their interrupts. The existing techniques fail to segment a groove containing interrupts as they usually appear as summits at several locations in the course of the groove. Combining the profile and image analyses, the deep grooves and their interrupts were successfully identified and quantified in earlier works of the authors. In this paper those algorithms are extended, so that the deep honing grooves, plateau honing grooves and axial scratches crossing different depth levels are sequentially segmented in three levels/steps in an immersing way. A number of parameters derived from this method were utilised to compare 3D interference measurements from the top dead centre, middle and bottom region of a liner run in a truck engine test whereas the three regions represent different wear regimes due to the different running conditions. The results show that: (i) the axial scratches are densest in the top dead centre and about the same size as the plateau grooves in all three regions, while in the bottom region there are only few scratches; (ii) the presence of plateau grooves in the top region clearly decreases, (iii) the deep groove interrupt and coverage are lowest in the top region, and (iv) the groove height and distance between grooves spread mostly.

    It is of common interest to reduce oil consumption and frictional losses in internal combustion engines, which are heavily influenced by the quality of the cylinder liner surface. The plateau cross-hatch topography of a cylinder liner consists of a system of grooves of different density, width and depth, some parts covered by folded metal, and some parts totally interrupted and unbalanced as a result of imperfection in the honing process. These grooves are critical for good liner function, and need to be quickly and objectively quantified for an efficient surface finish development. A suitable way to do this is to use 3D interference measurements and to combine profile and image analysis. Thus, the features/parameters, such as honing angle, balance of honing texture, groove interrupts, width, height, and distance between grooves, are successively quantified. Here, these parameters, along with areal surface texture parameters in the published ISO specification standard were used in two case studies. The first case study is on the effect of the folded metal on the surfaces of run truck liners and the second is an evaluation of the improvements of the surface quality introduced by the diamond honing in production of car liners. In addition, based on the significant parameters of the surface, a general characterisation tool for qualifying the surface quality and determination of the required number of measurements is presented. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.     Through extensive research it has shown that today’s sail boat owners are very frustrated concerning the limited choice of engine alternatives offered by today’s market. Besides rising fuel-costs, environmental awareness is very important in today’s society. Hence it is vital to find alternative environmental-friendly motors and replace combustion-engines.

     

    Zilent Ocean is an extensive project within Development engineering program at Halmstad University. The Project aims at minimizing environmental impact on our seas through limiting the usage of combustion-engines in sail boats. Zilent Ocean’s major target is the development of a customer-oriented company offering electric conversion kits of combustion-engines to sail boats at very competitive market prices.

     

    The Project was carried out by converting the combustion-engine in a MAXI 77 sailing boat (7.7m length, 5 beds). The current diesel-engine installed in the boat was replaced with a new DC electrical engine together with the appropriate controller unit.

     

    The finished sail boat prototype will be evaluated under the summer of 2009. The sail boat contains unique solutions enabling a more cost-efficient system in comparison with today’s combustion-engines. The aim is to provide a complete electric conversion kit at a lower price than a new combustion-engine. Together with lower investment costs, minimal maintenance and running costs, electrical conversion from Zilent Ocean is bound to be the future, and the natural decision for many sailors in Scandinavia.

    Denna studie har ägnats åt ett rekryteringsföretag samt dess rekryteringsprocess. Syftet med föreliggande studie är att utveckla en förståelse för hur anställda på rekryteringsföretaget upplever för- och nackdelar i förändringar av rekryteringsprocessen som gjorts med anledning av distansarbetet som införts vid Covid-19. En kvalitativ forskningsmetod har använts genom sju semistrukturerade intervjuer. Studien har präglats av en hermeneutisk tolkningsprocess och den insamlade empirin har analyserats med en tematisk analysmetod. Respondenterna var på något vis involverade i rekryteringsprocessen, samt hade arbetat inom organisationen både innan och under pandemin. Resultatet visade att det område i rekryteringsprocessen som har påverkats mest av distansarbetet är kontakten och kommunikationen med kunder. Resultatet visade även att kontakten och kommunikationen med såväl kandidater som kollegor till viss del har förändrats. Det har däremot inte gjorts några förändringar i organisationens rekryteringsverktyg. Upplevelserna av förändringarna bland respondenterna har varierat, men har överlag varit positiva.

    This bachelor thesis is a pre study for HGF – AB Halmstad Gummifabrik where the goal is to develop the most optimal water cutting machine for their production, which will then be placed in a production line. HGF are currently not water cutting anything themselves but are now investigating the possibility of expanding their production and sales where the manufacturing technology is water cutting. Through pre studies and analysis in form of operating costs, design and environmental impact of the market’s available machines, HGF will get an overview of which machine suits them best for their production.

    The first tests were done at FabLab in Halmstad University, but the project members realized that more realistic machine tests had to be done. Water Jet Sweden AB (WJS) is a leading company in manufacturing of water cutting machines were contacted. The project members participated digitally throughout meetings where more detailed tests were made on the rubber products to see what is suitable for industrial production. The project members presented various machine proposals and a production layout that needed to meet the requirements set by HGF. The result of the selected machine was based on the feasibility studies, interviews and observations, after which proposals were made for the design of a production line with consideration to Lean Production. Finally, discussions are raised regarding the impact of the water cutting machine on social, economic and environmental aspects.

    With the help of our pre study, HGF can decide for themselves whether an investment in a water cutting machine is appropriate for expanding their production.

    Detta examensarbete har utförts i samarbete med högskolan i Skövde med syftet att genom simulering och optimering påvisa produktionstekniska parametrars påverkan på ett systems prestanda. Examensarbetets mål var att från data ta fram en simuleringsmodell som på ett korrekt sätt avspeglade verkligheten och som kunde användas vid optimering. 

    En metod för modellbygge togs fram genom en kombination av teorier från Banks (1998) och Lundgren et al. (2010), som sedan praktiserades genom att bygga en modell på data från en verklig produktionsanläggning. Frågeställningen och kraven som utarbetats tillsammans med uppdragsgivaren gällande modellens prestanda utvärderades innan optimeringsparametrar för sekvens, batch-storlekar samt Buffer- och Store-kapacitet definierades och stiftades. Det resultat som optimeringen genererade analyserades, utvärderades och jämfördes med resultat från egna experiment för att säkerställa dess trovärdighet. 

    Projektet har bidragit med en ny syn på det produktionsflöde som simulerats och visat att det inte alltid är de uppenbara parametrarna som påverkar processen mest. Resultatet visar på förbättring av total kapacitet med 64%, samt en ledtid som kortades ner med över 24 timmar. Arbetet belyser fördelarna för ett företag att använda sig av simulering i sitt arbete med produktionsutveckling, för att minimera risken att lägga resurser på förbättringar med lägre förbättringspotential än andra. 

    Den simuleringsmodell som tagits fram och den djupare förståelsen för densamma, kommer ligga till grund för fortsatt arbete med att undersöka produktionstekniska parametrar och hur det korrelerar med varandra.

    FRP stands for Fiber Reinforced Polymer. FRP materials have yet to be introduced inbridge construction in Sweden. Composite materials can through combined componentsand manufacturing processes be tailored to fit advanced bridge designs. FRP materials arestrong, durable and of low weight. FRP materials give the superstructure reduced weightand are therefore a suitable alternative for industrial prefabrication. This report shows thatFRP materials are possible to use in bridge construction. With the introduction of a specificEurocode we are confident that FRP materials will become a competitive alternative inbridge construction in Sweden in the future.

    New surface treatments, novel material developments, and improved quality control procedures and advanced metrology instrumentation create a possibility to further develop competitiveness by the selection of “optimal” surface features”, to a product. The customers first apprehension of a product and the creation of desire is a very complex, but tempting process to learn more about. The interaction between the added quantitative- and the qualitative direct impressions with the customers known and unknown functional demands, social background, and expectations results in sensation and perception, partly possible to quantify and to great extent impossible to pin-down as numbers. Customer sensation and perception are much about psychological factors. There has been a strong industrial- and academic need and interest for methods and tools to quantify and linking product properties to the human response but a lack of studies of the impact of surfaces. This paper aims to introduce a novel approach to develop and join a human sensoric inspired metrology frame-work with qualitative gradings of apprehended impressions of products with varying surface properties. The aim is to establish the metrology framework to link measurable- and unmeasurable impressions of product surfaces to customer FEELING as exemplified by a set of industrial applications. In conclusions of the study, future research in Soft metrology is proposed to allow understanding and modelling of product perception and sensations in combination with a development of the Kansei Surface Engineering methodology and software tools. © Proceedings of NordDesign: Design in the Era of Digitalization, NordDesign 2018.     Ungdomsarbetslöshet är idag ett stort problem i Europa. Ungdomar har svårare att få ett heltidsjobb än för 20 år sedan. I samarbete med Arbetsförmedlingen startade Swedbank projektet Unga Jobb med syfte att få fler arbetssökande ungdomar in på arbetsmarknaden.

    Syftet med studien var att med kvalitativ metod öka vår förståelse för initiativet Unga Jobb och vad samarbetet innebär för huvudaktörerna Arbetsförmedlingen och Swedbank. Syftet var också att studera och analysera kring hur Arbetsförmedlingen, Swedbank och samhället kan ta till vara på positiva konsekvenser av projektet och hur negativa konsekvenser av projektet kan ge lärdomar och undvikas.

    Studien utfördes som en kvalitativ fallundersökning. Undersökningen bestod av åtta stycken intervjuer med respondenter från Arbetsförmedlingen och Swedbank.

    Den huvudsakliga slutsatsen vi kan dra av studien är att samverkan är något positivt och som behövs för att lösa svårare frågor som till exempel ungdomsarbetslöshet. Det är viktigt att arbeta för bättre och effektivare åtgärder och finna lösningar som är bra för alla parter, det vill säga samhället, organisationerna och individerna.

    There is an increased interest in contact-less vital sign monitoring methods as they offer higher flexibility to the individual being observed. Recent industrial development enabled radar functionality to be packed in single-chip solutions, decreasing application complexity and speeding up designs. Within this paper, a vital sign radar has been developed utilizing a recently released 60GHz frequency modulated continuous wave single-chip radar in combination with 3D-printed quasi-optics. The electronics development has been focused on compactness and high system integration using a low cost design process. The final experiments prove that the radar is capable of tracking human respiration rate and heartbeat at the same time from a distance of 1m.

    Front-end activities largely influence the outcomes of new product development processes, because it is here that firms create new ideas, give them direction, and set them in motion. We show that the front end can be understood as comprising three core activities: idea/concept development, idea/concept alignment, and idea/concept legitimization, which allow firms to create corroborated product definitions. The paper provides important implications for managers interested in front-end management, and devote specific attention to the differences between incremental and radical front end development and to the front end in the light of increasingly open innovation processes.

    It is widely acknowledged that the design and quality of the business model is a main building block in what constitute a successful company. In this paper, we approach the critical question of how firms can successfully renew their business models over time. The aim is to identify the main sequences of events that precede business model innovation and which trigger evolutionary changes in how a firm develops and capture value. Theoretically, we approach business model innovation as an evolutionary phenomenon by emphasizing the dynamic and path dependent aspects of strategic change processes. Empirically, we employ a historical case study where we make an in-depth analysis of a firm in the process industry that has managed to innovate its business model several times since its inception. In all, the study identifies five main sequences of events related to customer value proposition, strategic investments, corporate identity, corporate structure, and value networks.

    In the European Joint Research Project 'Multidimensional Reflectometry for Industry', a new gloss scale was developed with the aim to represent different levels of gloss, hue, roughness, and refractive indices. In this paper, the surfaces of six selected samples were thoroughly investigated using various measuring techniques in order to verify the outcome of the novel manufacturing processes in terms of distinct levels as well as types of surface roughness. The aim of the evaluation was to capture surface structures in different wavelength intervals utilizing a confocal microscope, a coherence scanning interferometer, and an atomic force microscope. Power spectral density functions were also calculated from the measurements and used to determine suitability of techniques for different roughness scales. The measurements show that the expected surface characteristics as well as different RMS roughness values are intimately connected to the perceived glossiness.

    Syftet med studien är att undersöka rekryterares upplevelser av digitala rekryteringsverktyg. Med stöd från en kvalitativ metod och valet av semistrukturerade intervjuer har vi åstadkommit och fått inblick i hur våra respondenter uppfattat digitala verktyg i rekryteringsprocesser. Med utgångspunkt från våra forskningsfrågor vill vi för det första få en förståelse för hur implementeringen av digitala verktyg har hanterats i olika organisationer. Vidare undersöker vi vilka möjligheter samt utmaningar respondenterna upplever i förhållande till användandet av digitala verktyg i rekryteringsprocesser. Studiens genomförande har utgått från en kvalitativ metod med induktiv ansats. Bearbetning av empirin har hanterats genom en tematisk analys. Studiens teoretiska utgångspunkter som används för att analysera det empiriska materialet är Kurt Lewin’s förändringsmodell samt paradoxteorin. Med stöd av förändringsmodellen förklaras upplevelserna av digitala rekryteringsverktyg utifrån respondenternas berättelser. Genom användning av paradoxteorin har det framkommit att olika motsägelsefulla krafter som utgör olika paradoxer, dessa är av signifikant betydelse i förhållande till förståelsen av analysen kopplat till våra forskningsfrågor.

    Utifrån resultatet uppkommer det att digitala rekryteringsverktyg utgör ett stöd för rekryteringsprocessen, i olika organisationer. Vid implementering av nya digitala verktyg framkommer det från våra respondenter att ett bredare perspektiv gällande inkludering och planerade utbildningstillfällen i verktygen uppskattas. Möjligheter som identifieras i studien är att rekryterare anser att det bidrar positivt utifrån en tidsaspekt och att all kandidatinformation besparas i berörd organisations databas. Om vi ser till andra sidan myntet har det även framkommit utmaningar på grund av bristande kunskaper gällande IT i organisationen, integrationen mellan organisationers olika digitala verktyg är problematiskt i förhållande till arbetet. Slutligen berättar respondenterna att tillförlitligheten ifrågasätts vid implementeringen eller bristande kunskap av verktyget.

    This chapter explores the ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM) process. This process is an advanced, solid-state, metal additive/subtractive hybrid manufacturing process. The process combines high-power ultrasonic welding and computer numerical control milling to fabricate solid metal components, layer by layer, from metal foils. The chapter discusses the process fundamentals and three key abilities of UAM: complicated geometries, dissimilar material bonding, and object embedment. Combining these three key abilities positions UAM as a unique and attractive method to create metal matrix–based freeform multifunctional structures for high-value engineering applications. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.     The new product development (NPD) process is frequently described as a sequence of information processing activities, but "information in NPD" occupies a broader conceptual space than the reduction of uncertainty. This article reviews the area of "information in NPD" by examining the literature on environmental scanning, market orientation, gatekeepers, cross-functional integration, and information use. It is argued that we can understand the process of managing information in terms of three steps: Acquiring, sharing and using. A tentative framework for this area is proposed, and managerial implications resulting from this literature review and tentative frame are outlined and presented.

This researchverified people‟s opinions and can bring companies closer to real mindsets of Icelandicpotential buyers. Moreover, this paper might give a possibility to eliminate wrong thinkingand barriers by better adjusted marketing. Additionally, analyzed advantages might showwhat the main reason of shifting to this alternative technology is. Moreover, it shows whatmight be the customer acceptance price range.

    The vision of this thesis was to create a concept that can be used as a base for amachine construction. The purpose of this project was to use different methods todevelop a concept that on the best way meets the sat up requirements. This projecthas been divided into three stages/parts; principle, primary and the final solutionstage.This thesis has been conducted in collaboration with Västkustägg AB. It is aconstruction project designed to construct a machine that will automatically putlabels on the egg packages. Västkust AB wanted to automate this process. Thecompany has only tested this process earlier by an operator who did this jobmanually.We came up with different solution during this project. The assessments of theseconcepts were made after Olsson's (1995) method and together with Terje Olsson- our supervisor at the company, later during the project. During the last stage ofthis project we chose to go with one final concept for a further developing. Alldemands made by the company were followed throughout the working process.We managed to develop a machine containing few and simple components, whichat the same time are very functional for its purpose. The design of our machine isdifferent from other industrial machines and labeling machines which makes itunique in its own way. This machine is meant for labels of two standard types ofpaper A5 and A6.The calculations we made during this project have been done in Catia V5 and hasbeen verified. We had a clear image of how our ideas should be in the beginningof this project and we knew how we wanted them to be we used our own theoriesand approaches in practice. Our theories and ideas showed in our sketches andprototypes. This along with other methods led to our final concept.We had also built some prototypes to be able to see if our ideas work in practice.The prototype led to some changes in our concepts. It gave us experience inprototype creating, functionality of the ideas and other areas.

    Production lines for assembling two parts by screwing require flexible positioning and accurate tightening torque. Working with screwed products in process lines can cause bodily harm. The project aims to develop an application to compensate for the monotonous and tiring work. This report reviews the integration of Bosch Rexroth’s Compact module, and Linear module with an ErgoSpin. The project’s objective entails a turnkey solution for a developed application to be implemented in production lines. The ErgoSpin is a fast, self-tightened screwdriver placed over the screw by measuring the angle, gradient, and tension with the optimal tightening torque. The integration of the products is both electrical and mechanical. Mechanical elements were designed to merge the products into an application. The electrical interfaces between the products were connected and programmed through Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive, and a motion control system. By integrating these products, and implementing them in a production line, the work can be performed more efficiently, and the employees can focus on other tasks. The application is intended to work beside a conveyor unit in assembly stations. Tests were performed to assemble plates with different distances between the hotels and different sizes of screws. The test measured the time it took the application to assemble parts with different distances between the holes and the actual tightening torque it entailed. The results from the tests indicated that optimal tightening torque was achieved for all tests and that the execution of the application has no influence on the mechanical performance. The time difference for the various distances between the holes was almost negligible, and indicated rapid changes between the holes. The time difference between the different screw dimensions proves a slight increase in time for the larger dimensions. The risk assessment was conducted on the application by FMEA to account for all potential hazards based on events in the application’s area of use. The FMEA also provides the proposed actions to prevent the risks.
