    Abstract [en]

    This work presents the temporal analysis for a distributed differential control system for a mobile robot deployed on a wireless network using the SunSPOT platform. The system is programmed in Java and each of its part is executed in a distinct processor which cooperates via a wireless network. The communication between the network nodes is made by remote procedure calls, which are implemented by a minimum version of the Java RMI (mRMI), presented in this work. Simulation results are compared to experimental data acquired by the deployment of the system on real devices, the SunSPOTs. The comparisons reveal that the distributed solution presents fairly good results besides the inserted errors due to the wireless communication. © 2011 IEEE.

    Abstract [en]

    Video streaming through IP networks has risen rapidly over the recent years, and will continue to do so over the coming years. In addition to this, new technologies such as Virtual Reality and robotics will lead to many new applications that will put high pressure on the networks. To combat these challenges, networks need to be application sensitive, and be able to provide Quality of Service (QoS) based on requirement. Network paradigms like Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables the network to be directly programmable, and could thus solve the challenge. In this thesis, the objective is to research if SDN can provide High QoS.

    Methods are developed to achieve High QoS with SDN. A combination of Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) values and DSCP remarking with Meters are used enable High QoS and together they can give bandwidth guarantee. As a result of the thesis, a solid theoretical method is provided for achieving QoS, tests are performed and show that QoS can be implemented in SDN, but it is unable to implement High QoS due to the lack of implementation for Meters with DSCP remarking.

    När datatrafik färdas genom ett nätverk så passerar det routrar och switcharsamtidigt som dessa enheter visar åt vilket håll paketet ska skickas. Detta kallas förrouting. För att paketen ska hitta rätt väg så använder man sig av routingprotokoll,som vägleder trafiken dit de ska, och olika protokoll har olika fördelar samtidigtsom de används vid olika tillfällen. Målet var att skapa ett stort enhetligt nätverksom tål höga belastningar, har en hög uppkopplingsprocent samtidigt som det skavara lätt att expandera i framtiden. Det största problemet var hur trafiken färdasmellan varje kontor, men problem som hur användarna ska vara uppkopplade tillInternet tas upp i rapporten. Nätverket använder sig av OSPF som routingprotokoll.Varje kontor delas in i områden, totallystubby area, vilket kortar nedroutingtabellen i Stockholm. Resultatet blir att snabba beslut tas när paket skaskickas inom ett kontor och när det ska utanför ett kontor så används en defaultroute. Samtidigt som kontoren är lätta att bygga ut då totallystubby area har endefault route till Stockholm.

    Abstract [en]

    The current paper addresses the problem of the throughput-delay performance of a contemporary WPAN MAC standard. A brief overview of the standard functionality is first presented that allows a system model derivation. Two different acknowledgement policies are described under which the channel operation is considered. Two possible input traffic models are also considered one of them being saturation conditions under which the performance analysis is done that is further verified by means of the simulation. The obtained results show the system behavior as the number of channel users increase and allow the tuning of the protocol parameters to improve the performance.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper addresses the performance evaluation of the contemporary UWB WPAN standard. The basic standard functionality is described for which a system model is derived that accounts for the possible errors due to the background noise. Two realistic scenarios of the saturation conditions and the Bernoulli packet arrivals are considered to calculate the system throughput and the mean initial packet delay. The redundancy-based error detection mechanism that is implemented in the standard is discussed that allows the enhancement of the system performance. The obtained results are compared against the simulation which shows a good accordance with the analytical results and a distinct superiority of the introduced enhancement.

    In this paper, the authors examine a client relay system comprising three wireless nodes. Closed-form expressions for mean packet delay, as well as for throughput, energy expenditure, and energy efficiency of the source nodes are also obtained. The precision of the established parameters is verified by means of simulation.

    This paper addresses the performance of the contention-based polling techniques at the bandwidth reservation stage of IEEE 802.16 standard. A general proposition is proved, which establishes that the grouping of users in the random multiple access system does not change its capacity. Broadcast and multicast polling mechanisms are then considered, for which the throughput and the rate of the truncated binary exponential backoff algorithm are calculated for the lossy and the lossless system types, respectively. It is shown, that subject to proper optimization the performance of the aforementioned algorithm is the same for both system types. The efficiency of the symmetric user grouping is finally studied, which demonstrates that a negligible performance gain may be achieved for the cost of the increased IEEE 802.16 overhead.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we address the bandwidth reservation in IEEE 802.16 standard via multicast and broadcast polling mechanisms. It is shown that symmetric user grouping with the same QoS requirements does not change the capacity of the random multiple access system. Binary exponential backoff protocol is then investigated as it is standardized for both multicast and broadcast polling. We establish that symmetric user grouping does not essentially increase the performance of this protocol.

    Vehicles in cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) often need to interact with each other in order to achieve their goals, safe and efficient transport services. Since human drivers are still expected to be involved in C-ITS, driving simulators are appropriate tools for evaluation of the C-ITS functions. However, driving simulators often simplify the interactions or influences from the ego vehicle on the traffic. Moreover, they normally do not support vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) communication, which is the main enabler for C-ITS. Therefore, to increase the C-ITS evaluation capability, a solution on how to extend a driving simulator with traffic and network simulators to handle cooperative systems is presented as a result of this paper. Evaluation of the result using two use cases is presented. And, the observed limitations and challenges of the solution are reported and discussed. © 2016 ACM, Inc.

    Data offloading using vehicles is one of the most challenging tasks to perform due to the high mobility of vehicles. There are many solutions available for this purpose, but due to the inefficient management of data along with the control decisions, these solutions are not adequate to provide data offloading by making use of the available networks. Moreover, with the advent of 5G and related technologies, there is a need to cope with high speed and traffic congestion in the existing infrastructure used for data offloading. Hence, to make intelligent decisions for data offloading, an SDN-based scheme is presented in this article. In the proposed scheme, an SDNbased controller is designed that makes decisions for data offloading by using the priority manager and load balancer. Using these two managers in SDN-based controllers, traffic routing is managed efficiently even with an increase in the size of the network. Moreover, a single-leader multi-follower Stackelberg game for network selection is also used for data offloading. The proposed scheme is evaluated with respect to several parameters where its performance was found to be superior in comparison to the existing schemes. © Copyright 2017 IEEE

    I många år nu har det varit vanligt förekommande att människor suttit hemma vid sin dator och med några få klick laddat ner filmer, musik och programvaror, till en början helt lagligt, men med åren har lagar kommit till som har gjort det mer och mer olagligt.Oavsett om det har varit lagligt eller inte, så är det troligt att många artister, filmmakare och liknande gått miste om stora summor pengar i förlorade inkomster på grund av att folk inte har betalat för att ta del av deras verk, utan istället valt att ladda ner dem över Internet.

    Det faktum att fildelning har blivit så pass vanligt och att folk inte har sett det som ett särskilt allvarligt brott, har lett till att fildelning länge har varit ett hett omdiskuterat ämne i media, bland upphovsrättsinnehavare och bland folk i allmänhet. Upphovsmän och upphovsrättsinnehavare, såsom filmbolag, författare och artister har legat på och debatterat för att försöka få till en hårdare lagstiftning för att försvåra fildelning och kopiering av upphovsrättsskyddat material, samt för att få till hårdare straff mot fildelning.

    Flera försök från beslutsfattare har gjorts för att råda bot på problemet, nya lagar har stiftats och avtal har skrivits under. Frågan är om de nya lagarna och avtalen gör någon nytta? Blir folk avskräckta från att fildela eller fortsätter de som förut? Många har säkert under många år blivit bortskämda med att kunna sitta hemma vid datorn och på några minuter få hem de senaste filmerna och den nyaste musiken helt gratis, vilket säkert gör det svårt att helt plötsligt sluta fildela och börja betala för film och musik igen.

    Safety applications developed for vehicular environments require every vehicle to periodically broadcast its status information (beacon) to all other vehicles, thereby avoiding the risk of car accidents in the road. Due to the high requirements on timing and reliability posed by traffic safety applications, the current IEEE 802.11p standard, which uses a random access Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, faces difficulties to support timely and reliable data dissemination in vehicular environments where no acknowledgement or RTS/CTS (Request-to-Send/Clear-to-Send) mechanisms are adopted. In this paper, we propose the Dynamic Token-Based MAC (DTB-MAC) protocol. It implements a token passing approach on top of a random access MAC protocol to prevent channel contention as much as possible, thereby improving the reliability of safety message transmissions. Our proposed protocol selects one of the neighbouring nodes as the next transmitter; this selection accounts for the need to avoid beacon lifetime expiration. Therefore, it automatically offers retransmission opportunities to allow vehicles to successfully transmit their beacons before the next beacon is generated whenever time and bandwidth are available. Based on simulation experiments, we show that the DTB-MAC protocol can achieve better performance than IEEE 802.11p in terms of channel utilization and beacon delivery ratio for urban scenarios.

    Abstract [en]

    Platooning is both a challenging and rewarding application. Challenging since strict timing and reliability requirements are imposed by the distributed control system required to operate the platoon. Rewarding since considerable fuel reductions are possible. As platooning takes place in a vehicular ad hoc network, the use of IEEE 802.11p is close to mandatory. However, the 802.11p medium access method suffers from packet collisions and random delays. Most ongoing research suggests using TDMA on top of 802.11p as a potential remedy. However, TDMA requires synchronization and is not very flexible if the beacon frequency needs to be updated, the number of platoon members changes, or if retransmissions for increased reliability are required. We therefore suggest a token-passing medium access method where the next token holder is selected based on beacon data age. This has the advantage of allowing beacons to be re-broadcasted in each beacon interval whenever time and bandwidth are available. We show that our token-based method is able to reduce the data age and considerably increase reliability compared to pure 802.11p. © 2015 IEEE.

    An Efficient MAC Protocol for vehicle platooning in automated highway systems2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Lately, all the top truck manufacturers are investing considerable resources in the research and development of platooning systems which would allow vehicles to save fuel and improve safety by travelling in a close-following manner. The platooning system requires frequent and reliable vehicle-to-vehicle communications. As platooning takes place in a vehicular ad hoc network, the use of IEEE 802.11p is close to mandatory. However, the 802.11p medium access method suffers from packet collisions and random delays. Most ongoing research suggests using TDMA on top of 802.11p as a potential remedy. However, TDMA requires synchronization and is not very flexible if the beacon frequency needs to be updated, the number of platoon members changes, or if re-transmissions for increased reliability are required. We therefore suggest a token-passing medium access method where the next token holder is selected based on beacon data age. This has the advantage of allowing beacons to be re-broadcasted in each beacon interval whenever time and bandwidth are available. We show that our token-based method is able to reduce the data age and considerably increase reliability considerably compared to pure 802.11p.

    Abstract [en]

    Molecular communication is a relatively new communication paradigm for nanomachines where the communication is realized by utilizing existing biological components found in nature. In recent years researchers have proposed using bacteria to realize molecular communication because the bacteria have the ability to swim and migrate between locations, carry DNA contents (i.e. plasmids) that could be utilized for information storage, and interact and transfer plasmids to other bacteria (one of these processes is known as bacterial conjugation). However, current proposals for bacterial nanonetworks have not considered the internal structures of the nanomachines that can facilitate the use of bacteria as an information carrier. This article presents the types and functionalities of nanomachines that can be utilized in bacterial nanonetworks. A particular focus is placed on the bacterial conjugation and its support for multihop communication between nanomachines. Simulations of the communication process have also been evaluated, to analyze the quantity of bits received as well as the delay performances. Wet lab experiments have also been conducted to validate the bacterial conjugation process. The article also discusses potential applications of bacterial nanonetworks for cancer monitoring and therapy. © 2014 IEEE.

    Abstract [en]

    Multi-user spatial multiplexing combined with packet aggregation can significantly increase the performance of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). In this letter, we present and evaluate a simple technique to perform packet aggregation in IEEE 802.11ac MU-MIMO (Multi-user Multiple Input Multiple Output) WLANs. Results show that in non-saturation conditions both the number of active stations (STAs) and the queue size have a significant impact on the system performance. If the number of STAs is excessively high, the heterogeneity of destinations in the packets contained in the queue makes it difficult to take full advantage of packet aggregation. This effect can be alleviated by increasing the queue size, which increases the chances of scheduling a large number of packets at each transmission, hence improving the system throughput at the cost of a higher delay. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

    Abstract [en]

    Prospective IEEE 802.11p-based vehicular surveillance system, where video from the vehicle on-board camera is transmitted to the management center, is considered. Multi-hop transmission from the vehicle to the nearest roadside unit and then-via other roadside units-to the gateway is addressed. In this letter we assess the feasibility of such system by analyzing the video end-to-end distortion for a target vehicle, located several hops away from the gateway, when it is alone or there are also other vehicles transmitting video. We demonstrate the importance of dynamic adaptation of the video bit rate of each vehicle depending on the number and positions of the participating vehicles. © 2014 IEEE.

    Abstract [en]

    Wireless objects equipped with multiple antennas are able to simultaneously transmit multiple packets by exploiting the channel's spatial dimensions. In this paper, we study the benefits of such Multiple Packet Transmission (MPT) approach, when it is used in combination with a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol for fully interconnected networks, addressing the interactions between the two mechanisms and showing the performance gains that can be achieved. To this end, a very simple Media Access Control (MAC) protocol that captures the fundamental properties and tradeoffs of a CSMA/CA channel access protocol supporting MPT is introduced. Using this protocol as a reference, a new analytical model is presented for the case of non-saturated traffic sources with finite buffer space. Simulation results show that the analytical model is able to accurately characterize the steady-state behavior of the reference protocol for different number of antennas and different traffic loads, providing a useful tool for understanding the performance gains achieved by MAC protocols supporting MPT. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.     This book chapter introduces the use of Continuous Time Markov Networks (CTMN) to analytically capture the operation of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) networks. It is of tutorial nature, and it aims to be an introduction on this topic, providing a clear and easy-to-follow description. To illustrate how CTMN can be used, we introduce a set of representative and cutting-edge scenarios, such as Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), Power Line Communication networks and multiple overlapping Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). For each scenario, we describe the specific CTMN, obtain its stationary distribution and compute the throughput achieved by each node in the network. Taking the per-node throughput as reference, we discuss how the complex interactions between nodes using CSMA/CA have an impact on system performance.

    Overtaking on rural roads may cause severe accidents when oncoming traffic is detected by a driver too late, or its speed is underestimated. Recently proposed cooperative overtaking assistance systems are based on real-time video transmission, where a video stream captured with a camera installed at the windshield of a vehicle is compressed, broadcast through the wireless channel, and displayed to the drivers of vehicles driving behind. In such a system, it is of ultimate importance to deliver video information about the opposite lane with low end-to-end latency and good visual quality. In this paper, we propose reallocating the wireless channel resources in favor of the part of the captured video frame containing the image of the oncoming vehicle. To achieve this goal, we apply automotive radar for oncoming vehicle detection, and we use the image of this vehicle as a region-of-interest (ROI) for the video rate control. We present the theoretical framework, which describes the basics of such an approach and can serve as a useful guideline for the future practical implementation of the overtaking assistance systems. The benefits of our proposal are demonstrated in relation to the practical scenario of H.264/Advance Video Coding (AVC), IEEE 802.11p/Wireless Access for Vehicular Environments (WAVE) intervehicle communication standards, and currently used automotive radars.

    Real-time video delivery in Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) scenario enables a variety of multimedia vehicular services. We conduct experiments with Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) transceivers located in the mutual proximity and exchanging Skype video calls traffic. We demonstrate that the lack of coordination between the users both at the application as well as Medium Access Control (MAC) layers results in problems with quality of service provisioning even for the setup without vehicular mobility. © Copyright 2017 IEEE

    This work is dedicated to a live video streaming in vehicular networks where the application-based inter-packet forward error correction is used for the packet loss protection. A practical way to apply such a protection at the video encoder side for the unknown channel loss rate is proposed. Experimental results which demonstrate the performance for the proposed approach for a scalable extension of the H.264/AVC standard (H.264/SVC) and for the non-standardized video codec based on three-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (3-D DWT) are provided.

    In recently proposed cooperative overtaking assistance systems a video stream captured by a windshield-mounted camera in a vehicle is compressed and broadcast to the vehicle driving behind it, where it is displayed to the driver. It has been shown that this system can provide robust operation if video codec channel adaptation is undertaken by exploiting information from the cooperative awareness messages about any forthcoming increases in the multiple access channel load. In this letter we demonstrate the gains achievable in system performance when the video transmitter power control is also used. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

    IEEE 802.11p vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication technology is currently an emerging research topic in both industry and academia. Respective spectrum allocation of 10 MHz channels in the 5.9 GHz band for USA and Europe allows considering inter-vehicle transmission of a live video information as a basis, which enables a new class of safety and infotainment automotive applications such as road video surveillance. This paper is first of its kind where such a video transmission system is developed and experimentally validated. We propose a low-complexity unequal packet loss protection and rate control algorithms for a scalable video coding based on the three-dimensional discrete wavelet transform. We show that in comparison with a scalable extension of the H.264/AVC standard the new codec is less sensitive to packet losses, has less computational complexity and provides comparable performance in case of unequal packet loss protection. It is specially designed to cope with severe channel fading typical for dynamic vehicular environments and has a low complexity, making it a feasible solution for real-time automotive surveillance applications. Extensive measurements obtained in realistic city traffic scenarios demonstrate that good visual quality and continuous playback is possible when the moving vehicle is in the radius of 600 meters from the roadside unit. ©2014 IEEE

    An interaction protocol for cooperative platoon merge on highways is proposed. The interaction protocol facilitates a challenge scenario for the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge (GCDC) 2016, where two platoons running on separate lanes merge into one platoon due to a roadwork in one of the lanes. Detailed interaction procedures, described with state machines of each vehicle are presented.     Abstract [sv]

    Raytelligence har utvecklat en radar som kan registrera rörelse och hjärtfrekvens hos människor. Datan från radarn skickas över Universal Serial Bus (USB) till en extern dator. För att produkten ska bli mer användarvänlig krävs en bättre kommunikationslösning. Projektet går ut på att implementera en trådlös kommunikation i form av bluetooth och Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) som kan skicka datan från radarn trådlöst till en extern dator eller mobil enhet. I rapporten beskrivs de olika metoderna som använts för att åstadkomma den trådlösa kommunikationen. Det beskrivs passande gränssnitt, val av passande kommunikationsmodul, implementering och kalibrering av antenn, val av komponenter och olika sätt att motverka Elektromagnetisk Interferens (EMI) för att få bra förutsättningar för en Elektromagnetisk kompatibilitet (EMC)-certifiering. Resultatet av projektet är en produkt som bygger på kommunikationsmodulen RS9113 och Raytelligence radarkort.

    I dagens Sverige så har de mobila enheterna en självklar plats i våra fickor, likväl som i vårt samhälle och i dess brottslighet, vilket gör att det sedan några år är att anse självklart att de även har en central roll i IT–forensiska utredningar inom våra polismyndigheter. Men vid sidan av konkreta bevis för begångna brott lagrar enheterna dessutom ofta data som kan användas för att spåra enheten, och därmed också dess brukare, över tid, vilket givetvis är av intresse av polismyndigheter men skulle även kunna vara av stort intresse för exempelvis försäkringsbolag och andra delar av den 'civila sektorn' som driver utredningar men som saknar polisens befogenheter. För att ge ett så brett användningsområde som möjligt fokuserar därför rapporten inte bara på datat som är tillgängligt från den faktiska enheten och hur de kan användas för spårning och positionering, utan försöker även på praktiskt väg undersöka i vilken grad dessa metoder kan utföras med allmänt tillgänglig mjuk- och hårdvara.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we propose an architecture for a cognitive engine that is based on the emotional learning cycle instead of the traditional cognitive cycle. The cognitive cycle that traditionally has been used as reference for cognitive radio is on the basis of the Unified Theories of Cognition (UTC) to model rational decision making in humans. UTC represents a rational goal-oriented decision-action made by an intelligent agent. However, the emotional cycle represents an emotional reaction-oriented cycle instead. These two models differ in function and structure of learning, decision making and optimization. In this work the structure of these two learning cycles are compared and a computational model for artificial emotional learning based engine is suggested.

    Abstract [en]

    It is expected that wireless sensor network will be used in home automation and industrial manufacturing in the future. The main driving forces for wireless sensor networks are fault tolerance, energy gain and spatial capacity gain. Unfortunately, an often forgotten issue is the capacity limits that the network topology of a wireless sensor network represents. In this paper we identify gains, losses and limitations in a wireless sensor network, using a simplified theoretical network model. Especially, we want to point out the stringent capacity limitations that this simplified network model provide. Where a comparison between the locality of the performed information exchange and the average capacity available for each node is the main contribution.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we investigate the impact of node mobility in a wireless ad hoc network (WAHN). Especially we investigate the possibility to provide guaranteed services in a WAHN, i.e., the network topology predictability. We combine link expiration time (LET) estimation with information propagation speed (IPS) in a time-space diagram and as result an operation area is revealed. The result gives that a WAHN, where the nodes are mobile, has a knowledge horizon (KH), the distance of which is dependent on the mobility of the nodes. Beyond the KH, knowledge about the network state is impossible to achieve. Thus, we can not predict long distance network topology state when the node mobility is high.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper studies the impact of vulnerabilities associated with the Sybil attack (through falsification of multiple identities) and message falsification in vehicular platooning. Platooning employs Inter-Vehicular Communication (IVC) to control a group of vehicles. It uses broadcast information such as acceleration, position, and velocity to operate a longitudinal control law. Cooperation among vehicles allows platoons to reduce fuel consumption and risks associated with driver mistakes. In spite of these benefits, the use of network communication to control vehicles exposes a relevant attack surface that can be exploited by malicious actors. To carry out this study, we evaluate five scenarios to quantify the potential impact of such attacks, identifying how platoons behave under varying Sybil attack conditions and what are the associated safety risks. This research also presents the use of location hijacking attack. In this attack, innocent vehicles that are not part of a platoon are used as a way to create trust bond between the false identities and the physical vehicles. We demonstrate that the ability to create false identities increases the effectiveness of message falsification attacks by making them easier to deploy and harder to detect in time.

    Platooning employs a set of technologies to manage how a group of vehicles operates, including radar, GPS and Inter-Vehicular Communication (IVC). Cooperation among vehicles allows platoons to reduce fuel consumption and risks associated with driver mistakes. In spite of these benefits, the use of IVC to control vehicles exposes a relevant attack surface that can be exploited by malicious actors. In this paper we study the impact of vulnerabilities associated with the Sybil attack (through falsification of multiple identities) and message falsification in vehicular platooning.     Abstract [en]

    Cooperative driving holds the potential to considerably improve the level of safety and efficiency on our roads. Recent advances in in-vehicle sensing and wireless communication technology have paved the way for the development of cooperative traffic safety applications based on the exchange of data between vehicles (or between vehicles and road side units) over a wireless link. The access to up-to-date status information from surrounding vehicles is vital to most cooperative driving applications. Other applications rely on the fast dissemination of warning messages in case a hazardous event or certain situation is detected. Both message types put high requirements on timeliness and reliability of the underlying communication protocols.

    The recently adopted European profile of IEEE 802.11p defines two message types,periodic beacons for basic status exchange and event-triggered hazard warnings, both operating at pre-defined send rates and sharing a common control channel. The IEEE 802.11p Medium Access Control (MAC) scheme is a random access protocol that doesnot offer deterministic real-time support, i.e. no guarantee that a packet is granted access to the channel before its deadline can be given. It has been shown that a high number of channel access requests, either due to a high number of communicating vehicles or highdata volumes produced by these vehicles, cannot be supported by the IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol, as it may result in dropped packets and unbounded delays.

    The goal of the work presented in this thesis has therefore been to enhance IEEE 802.11p without altering the standard such that it better supports the timing and reliability requirements of traffic safety applications and provides context-aware andefficient use of the available communication resources in a vehicular network. The proposed solutions are mapped to the specific demands of a set of cooperative driving scenarios (featuring infrastructure-based and infrastructure-free use cases, densely and sparsely trafficked roads, very high and more relaxed timing requirements) and evaluated either analytically, by computer simulation or by measurements and compared to the results produced by the unaltered IEEE 802.11p standard.

    As an alternative to the random MAC method of IEEE 802.11p, a centralized solution isproposed for application scenarios where either a road side unit or a suitable dedicated vehicle is present long enough to take the coordinating role. A random access phase forevent-driven data traffic is interleaved with a collision-free phase where timely channel access of periodic delay-sensitive data is scheduled. The ratio of the two phases isdynamically adapted to the current data traffic load and specific application requirements. This centralized MAC solution is mapped on two cooperative driving applications: merge assistance at highway entrances and platooning of trucks. Further,the effect of a context-aware choice of parameters like send rate or priority settings based on a vehicle’s position or role in the safety application is studied with the goal to reduce the overall number of packets in the network or, alternatively, use the available resources more efficiently. Examples include position-based priorities for the merge assistance use case, context-aware send rate adaptation of status updates in anovertaking warning application targeting sparsely-trafficked rural roads and an efficient dissemination strategy for warning messages within a platoon.

    It can be concluded that IEEE 802.11p as is does not provide sufficient support for the specific timing and reliability requirements imposed by the exchange of safety-criticalreal-time data for cooperative driving applications. While the proper, context-awarechoice of parameters, concerning send rate or priority level, within the limits of the standard, can lead to improved packet inter-arrival rates and reduced end-to-end delays,the added benefits from integrating MAC solutions with real-time support into the standard are obvious and needs to be investigated further.

    A platoon of trucks driving at the same, mutually agreed speed while keeping a minimum inter-vehicle distance will reduce fuel consumption, enhance transport efficiency as well as improve the safety of other adjacent road users. The European profile of IEEE 802.11p for inter-vehicle communications uses a single 10 MHz control channel dedicated to safety-critical data, shared by periodic status updates, CAM (Cooperative Awareness Message), and event-triggered warnings, DENM (Decentralized Environmental Notification Message). Coupled with the random access delay inherent to the 802.11p medium access method, the strict timing and reliability requirements of platoon applications are not easily met. To this end, we evaluate by simulation the effect of IEEE 802.11p-compliant send rate adaptations and message type prioritizations and the choice of warning dissemination strategy on CAM transmissions and DENM dissemination in a platooning scenario. Simulation studies of a platoon of 10-20 vehicles in a busy highway scenario show that the context-aware choice of send rate, priority class and dissemination strategy not only reduce the dissemination delay of DENMs but even has a significant effect on the throughput of CAMs exchanged by platoon members.
