Compassion in nursing – to be or not to be (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Compassion is the core of nursing but the definition of the concept is deficient within nursing science. Therefore it is important to define, visualize and articulate the concept of ompassion to make evidence based care available in caring- and nursingtradition. The aim of the study was to enlighten what compassion is and can be within nursing. A systematic literature review study was made and 8 articles of scientific quality were included. The result was presented in 5 different categories: Person-centred care, Attitudes, Communication, Presence in time and Environmental impact. These categories illuminate the compassionate caring in Nursing Science and caring practice as well as the barriers which could prevent the intermediary of compassionate care. The result emphasizes the patient’s experience of compassion is dependent by how nurses treat them. Compassion can be mediated through

conversations, confirmation and physical touch. However the nurse must be selfaware in her approach to the patient. Compassion in nursing is described in theory but lack of clinical value in nursing, further research it is therefore needed for the concept of compassion to become more visible and applied in nursing education and in caring practice.
